Excellent 3rd party controller
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a longtime fan of the DualShock, I was skeptical going in. And although the Astro C40 TR is not without flaws, it is the best third-party console controller I've used in a long time. It's often difficult to know what to expect out of a third-party peripheral. There exist countless brands who talk a big game with slick marketing but when you feel the cheap build quality or attempt to use their buggy software, both you and your wallet feel that old familiar sting; regret. In my experience thus far Astro has done me and my wallet a favor and although not perfect, they delivered something of quality which does stand above most competitors. The packaging is of course slick and pretty, but you can feel and see value in hardware which does not feel like a cheap plastic toy and software that isn't terrible: my two major issues with most third-party stuff. With the DualShock 4 less expensive than ever, it will be difficult to ignore the price tag. Many other reviews have mentioned the price and because times and prices will always change, I will not necessarily be counting this against the product itself here, but it is of course something to keep in mind. The C40 TR allows for easily swappable sticks and D-pad, although mine did not ship with any secondary D-pad. The ability to customize and interchange buttons, modules, etc. will be a major selling point and I'm looking forward to component options opening up in the future. It feels solid with a weight that reflects quality rather than cheap plastic. It took a couple hours but the controller did quickly feel very comfortable in my hands. I would especially recommend the C40 to anyone with larger than average hands, as it's slightly more bulky than the DS4 (think Xbox controller) and allows for larger thumb stick options. One of my biggest complains with the C40 and its hardware (albeit one I haven't seen mentioned much) is the left stick does not seem to seat perfectly on the underlying module. This leads to the slightest rattle in the thumb stick that you can definitely feel and noticable rattle noise along with it during casual movement. This existed for me both before attempting to swap any parts and after trying the other stick sizes. The other sticks seat fine, just not the left stick that shipped on my C40. I should mention, taking apart the controller and swapping parts is very easy and neither screws nor key tool feel remarkably cheap. Along with physically reconfigurable components, the buttons are re-mappable via the software (PC and Mac). The software is clean, simple and works as expected. Decent software can be hard to find in this market so this is a major point for me. The SW is used to upgrade firmware on the controller along with mapping inputs. I have not used this controller on the PC for gaming yet but I am curious to see how it compares to the DS4 w/ popular third party Windows drivers, as I'm accustomed. Inability to wirelessly power on the console could be a big deal for some, but otherwise the features are solid, including great 3.5mm audio quality, trigger locks for the depth of top triggers, and 2 additional buttons on the back side. The battery life is lacking – it has not lasted close to 12 hours as packaging suggests - battery life is closer to 6-8 hours for me. I have not tested input lag with the included 2.4 GHz adapter vs the DS4 Bluetooth connection but this is something to think about. I can say the response feels quick and has not given issues. Overall, if you're looking for something with plenty of customization, a solid feature set and can stomach the price, the C40 is a relatively great option as either a third-party PS4 controller or for PC game use. However, I would like to see some improvement in the battery life and improvement with how well the components fit (ex. stick issue mentioned above. Again, I'm not sure how common this issue is.)

Thumbsticks drift/break after 1 week of light use.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The thumbsticks/analog stick modules break after one week of light years. after researching the issue I found that it is a common occurrence among these "pro controllers" for the price I paid I would imagine that this issue that has plagued the dualshock 4 controller since its debut on the market would it be a thing of the past. I do not recommend this controller.

DO NOT BUY-HORRIBLE
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have use multiple controllers throughout my gaming career and by far the Astro c40 is the legit worst and that says something!!! The bumpers never work correctly, the sticks have horrible drift and they constantly get stuck! THIS TRASH IS A LITERAL WASTE OF MONEY, buy a scuf controller it is far more durable and it’s worth its value!
