Excellent, mid-range convertible Travel laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The Asus Q406 Zenbook Laptop is an excellent mid-range convertible laptop that is useful for many uses of a PC based laptop that can meet many uses that one may have including browsing, streaming, social media, office applications, conferencing and mid-range gaming. This review will be done in 3 parts – features, usage impressions, and pros/cons. Features: The features of the laptop are exactly where you expect them to be. Let’s talk some tech specifications first and then dive into other features such as ports and capabilities. This system is an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U powered system with 8 GB of non-removable onboard memory. The system has a native HD resolution of 1920x1080. While the system has 8 GB of RAM only 5.95 GB is accessible – I suspect the 2.05 GB of the RAM is being used to supplement the GPU part of the CPU but have been unable to confirm this. The screen is just shy of 14” in diagonal measurement and has a frameless nano edge to maximize the screen real estate. The battery life is right around 4 - 5 hours which is good for this style of laptop. The system has dual band WIFI and Bluetooth capabilities. The system sports an array of ports – on the left side there are two USB 3 ports – one type C and one type A along with an HDMI port for video out. Unfortunately, the USB C port does not have alt-mode and won’t output video. The power port for the power block is also on this side of the device. The right side has the power button, LED Indicators for on-off and battery status, a 3.5 mm Mic/speaker/headset port, a USB 2.0 port and a microSD card slot. This laptop is a convertible notebook and can support laptop, tent, stand and tablet configurations of the screen for different uses. This adds to the versatility of the device. When in Tent and tablet mode the keyboard and trackpad are disabled. The system’s audio is a Harmon Kardon based system and sounds excellent. The unit weighs 3.9 pounds. Usage Impressions: This unit is easy to use, and its size makes it a nice device to carry as a travel machine with plenty of ports and capabilities. The convertible nature of this machine means that one can use it to watch movies in stand or tent mode and not have to have a secondary device to do this. When In tent mode the Harman Kardon Speakers seem to be pointed right at you and enhances the sound of the system. An interesting feature of the system is that the hinge of the screen also doubles as a lifting edge to aid in the ergonomic positioning of the system. From a performance standpoint, the system is plenty powerful for most day to day office style tasks. The Ryzen 5 3500U processor and the system also handled a tougher task with ease. I “stress” tested this system by rendering a High def video using Camtasia. While the CPU did max out at 100% CPU utilization twice during this test it never kicked the cooling fan to high speed and the system did not crash. During the test, the RAM usage peaked at about 64% and the GPU peaked at about 37% - all well within acceptable performance for a video render. The video was just over 3 minutes in length and the render took 6 minutes and 1 second to complete. The system has an HDMI out port the works well and allows the system to have a secondary monitor when one wants to display something on a larger screen. It should be noted however that the USB C connector does not have ALT Mode. Considering the price point for this machine, it is an understandable omission. Should Asus elect to revise this machine at some point that would be a nice addition! Just an ok laptop

My job requires the use of Microsoft Teams for which one needs a microphone. The microphone on this laptop never worked! After the third call to Geek Squad they had me return this laptop! I then had to spend an additional $160.00 to get a Dell so I could work from home! Disappointed and not happy.

Fast, lightweight, long battery

I've streamed videos with no buffering, no lag and the picture on the frameless NanoEdge screen is beautiful. Plenty of RAM (8gb) for me, I've had several open pages at once and had no problem with it keeping up. I like the backlit keyboard, but it's the touchscreen that I use most and it's very responsive. Flipping it to change to tablet mode is easy, doesn't feel fragile at the hinges. With US Military grade quality this notebook feels very solid all around. The battery quickly charged and is still going 3 days later, although it's not been in heavy use. The only problem I've noticed is that it gets rather hot quickly. A cooling pad will help with that. I'm very pleased with the performance of this notebook.

Returned once and now have problems again

When I did open it the keys were broken. I returned it and had to wait another week to get a replacement because there were none in stock. I’ve had the replacement since 8/16 and it was used for school work and worked fine. When I restart my laptop it will begin the restart process but remains on the restart screen forever.

Bad Laptop Choice!

I am a college student that purchased this laptop around March 2020, and the speakers went out less than 6 months in nearly (I believed this was due to me not having the sound set up correctly but no, other Asus users have the same issue!) Another thing is it began shutting down on me randomly, in the middle of doing work tasks (low usage, just Word). By this time, I tried the warranty but it had already been a year and it was about to expire (they wanted me to ship my laptop off and I wouldn't get back in time before the warranty expires). This laptop was a bad purchase all around, and I will never purchase from Asus again; the customer support is not even worth it. How do you sell a laptop (multiple to your customers) knowing it has speaker issues? Please read the other reviews that are 3 stars or less to get a more realistic review.

Disappointed

Somehow the motherboard failed even though I've barely used the laptop since May 2020. I used it average once a month. Paid about 600 for it and will have to pay $250-$300 to have it shipped and repaired. Disappointing

ASUS 14 Touch Screen Laptop

The lettering on the keys were to light and I could not read it well. The lettering should be another color or the key board should light up more for evening/might typing. Just did not work for me. And the fan sound is more terrible than video volume. Come on it's a brand new laptop, and it is making huge noise after one day of use. I returned it.

The noise that is emitting from the computer is known as coil whine. When the electrical current is increased to a certain point, the magnetic field around the coil can cause it to vibrate, which produces the whiny sound. After a short amount of time the noise should go away as the components regulates. However, if it is that the sound is too much for you, then we would recommend that you have this device sent in for servicing.
