The Asus Q series is a solid line of 2-in-1 laptops by Asus which is often powered by Intel chips. The Asus Q406DA is the first (at least in the United States) to sport the AMD Ryzen 3500U chip combined with the Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx. And while Intel have dominated the PC space, I will give my honest review based on my usage of the Ryzen chip and also determine if this chip has overcome the Athlon and Sempron chips (which I’ve used) of yesteryears. The Asus Q406DA is a 14 inch 2-in-1 included in the Q series of laptops made by Asus. It is similar to the Asus Q405 which comes in silver. And that is has a 1080p resolution. A touch screen with Nano-edge technology meaning it has a small bezel. It also has a metal hinge which enables to swivel the screen up to 360 degrees thereby enabling it to convert into a tablet. It has two USB ports one located on each side and a USB C port and an HDMI port located on the left side. On the right side would be the power button and a micro-SD card (though I would prefer a normal sized SD card slot.) And like most laptops nowadays, there is no dvd drive but there is still a 3.5mm jack which allow for audio and mic functions. Included RAM is 8GB and it includes a 256GB SSD. The keyboard is lighted but it is still difficult to identify the latters which is a down side for this laptop. And lastly the laptop is powered by harman/kardon. But then again in spite of that, the sound coming from the speakers is tinny but nonetheless decent. Now comes what’s inside of the laptop. The AMD Ryzen 5 is at the level of i5 chips from Intel. It also comes with the Radeon Vega Mobile with 2GB RAM. Do note that this is an integrated GPU. It is not a gaming laptop which has a dedicated GPU. This translates to of the 8GB RAM included with the Q406DA, the Radeon chip uses 2GB leaving you with 6GB for other applications. Now these specs are bordering gaming PC territory. So it is expected that the included Microsoft Office bundle would run smoothly and its also freeware but slower competitor LibreOffice. So I’ve decided to download with the help of my 11 year-old son some games. We have downloaded some popular games such as Fortnite, Creative Destruction and Paladin. And I’ve left my son roadtest these games on this laptop. So far all games run smoothly. And without any performance measurement application used, this is a fast PC. You can also go to YouTube and checkout games such as PUBG, Realm Royale, Apex Legends and Dirt Rally of which the video rendering on the last two games are very impressive IMO. So, the final issue is to determine whether the Ryzen chip suffers the same fate as Athlon and Sempron chips. After several days of testing this laptop, I really haven’t experienced the heat generated in previous AMD chips. And since heat also results in higher power consumption, I felt during my initial use that the Q406DA has excellent battery life though there is no rating provided in the on the laptop sticker or documentation included. Thus while initial performance is good, the jury is still out there with regard to battery life. Overall, I am impressed with this laptop and and quite frankly surprised that AMD has finally addressed the heat issues that plagued it chips of yesteryear. And given the price point of this laptop, this is a recommended buy.

Super disappointed that the display on this laptop, bought 45 days ago, has already gone on the fritz. Ridiculous!

If you are in the market for a small powerful convertible laptop ( with a touchscreen that flips over so you can use it as a tablet) you could do a lot worse than Acer's new Zenbook Flip Q406DA. Like most laptops of this class, the Zenbook Flip has a 14-inch full HD screen, 8 gigs of RAM, a superfast Sandisk 256 GB SSD drive, backlit keyboard, the latest dual-band AC wi-fi and bluetooth connectivity, HDMI out and a full compliment USB A and C ports. Unlike many similar models, this one comes wrapped in a sturdy stylish silver metal case... no plastic. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that this laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U chip instead of an Intel, as almost all other Acer models are. If that is a concern to you, stop worrying. In my experience with this laptop, the Ryzen 5 is every bit the equal of a Core i5 and perhaps even a bit faster in some circumstances. It's a multithreaded quad core chip, which gives it the power of 8 cores. AMD, which has lagged behind Intel on the CPU front in recent years has obviously stepped up its game with Ryzen. This chip seems very capable, running smoothly no matter what I threw at it. Even streaming Playstation Vue, which is a pretty demanding streaming service, this laptop ran smooth as butter. No hiccups. Video is powered by an integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 chip, which is not exactly a gaming powerhouse but adequate for most normal laptop duties. And it has some extra features that improve the picture quality, including HDR support. It's turned off by default though so be sure to turn it on, especially if you use if for video streaming. Like most laptops, this one has a built-in video camera. But this one also supports face recognition for secure sign on, which works well. Very fast. No more typing PINs or passwords to unlock. Nice. Run time is advertised at around 8 hours. But that varies based on what you are doing. Charging is via a regular pin type adapter instead of USB. The battery is NOT user replaceable, the new norm on small laptops like this one. Setup is super simple. As soon as you turn it on, The Windows voice assistant Cortana talks you through the process. You can respond by voice commands if you want to save some time. You still have to type wi-fi passwords and your Windows login though. Once that's finished, and all Windows updates are done, boot time is a peppy 10 to 15 seconds, thanks to the speedy SSD. About average for this class. I ran into one speed bump during setup, with the laptop locking up during one of the update reboot sequences (the "Shutting down" never went away) . But a long press of the power button turned it off and once I turned it on again it completed all the updates with no problems. Not a big deal. The keyboard layout on small laptops can be a problem since some changes to the conventional layout must be made to fit all the keys in. But the one on this Acer is not too bad. Most commonly used functions, like volume and keyboard brightness, are arranged along the top row using the dual purpose F1-9 keys. Acer opted to have the regular laptop functions on by default but you can change that to standard Windows F1-9 functionality by default if you want from the Setup menu. Keyboard visibility is good with the backlight on but can be challenging in low light without the backlight given the dark gray on light gray color scheme. Sound quality is quite good for such a small laptop. It does not get real loud but the sound quality is full and clear. If you prefer to use the Zenbook Flip as a tablet instead of a laptop, just fold the screen all the way over. When this happens, you are prompted to enter Windows 10 tablet mode if you wish and since this laptop has a touchscreen, it's easy to make that transition. Even at 3 pounds, this a pretty heavy tablet but the folded under keyboard can act as a kickstand, with is convenient. It can also stand on its own, at the proper angle, in tent mode. Overall, this Zenbook Flip is a very powerful, versatile and sturdy laptop that should more than meet most of your needs, unless you are a power gamer. Touch typists will find the keyboard a bit cramped, which is the norm for all laptops of this size. But if you can live with that, chances are you will be happy with this Acer laptop.

Was super pumped to get this laptop for the price but once I got home and fired it up their was a noise it was making that sounded like a car LOL I think it was the fan, but this was geek squad approved right? Returned it 30 min later

Returned due to ovetheating, very poor battery life. Found out the battery was not removable so once it dies the computer is almost worthless. And on top of that it was really slow.

Purchased this less than a year ago for my son based on recommendations from the store. Didn’t make it one year and this is why I traditionally only purchase Mac products, as I’m typing on a 10 year old MacBook Pro he’s had to use for virtual school.

Utter garbage. The computer started grinding and churning *six* months of light useage into owning this piece of crap, like the Hard Drive was about to go. Thanks for nothing, ASUS

Don't waste your money here, after 2 months it started runnin extremely slow, now it has a noise coming from the inside, plus the keyboard is almost impossible to see.

Honestly bought this lap top to play Minecraft on and as soon as I get it and download it to my laptop the game is super laggy could barely run Minecraft

Worse purpose Ive ever made. Replaced motherboard 4-5 times and still doesn't work. no help bb or asus. Buyer beware. loss of $700. plus tax.

Sound and video issues out of box. Flashing black screen. System was super fast but even the power cord felt cheap. Returned which was also a huge pain.

Camera is supposed to be one of the best, but it is not. Picture is grayish. Depending on the lighting in my house I could look purple or gray… no natural color

After 3 months of using my device, the fan began making a loud noise and began to get extremely hot. The keyboard backlights are really low.

I bought the asus lap top on the recommendation of the sales rep who was very informative and knowledgeable and helped me. I enjoy the laptop and am very happy with my purchase

5 weeks. Haven't recieved. Tracking shows has not left Best Buy. Credit card statement shows billed for it anyway.

Did not like the silver/Gray keyboard. Difficult to see when comparing to black keyboard which we are used to using.

So I currently have an HP Spectre that was $1200 and recently received this Asus. The specs are very identical however this Asus seems to be lighter, faster, and just as versatile for a little more than half of the HP. As far as all the other features it’s what you expect out of a solid state drive. Very thin and I was working on it for over 8 hours and the battery was still going. Very nice computer for the money!

bought this laptop, then a month after the screen stopped working. A piece of crap!

So I have never had an Asus before this but decided to try something new. I also have always had intel processors but this came with an AMD Ryzen processor....thank goodness I switched!! This thing is honestly faster than anything I have used before! I can download movies or videos while doing other tasks and searching the web with no problems at all. Not to mention how fast it did it even with everything going! No glitches or hesitations at all! Setup was pretty quick and simple though it did find one little issue that repaired itself in a matter of seconds which was awesome! At one point I was streaming a video while working on some other things and had no issues at all. Battery life is pretty good considering the work load I was putting on it. It feels well constructed and durable not flimsy like some of the other laptops out there, which is good because I am not the easiest person with them. The keyboard feels nice and is very responsive, just wish that when I have it in my lap the backlighting was a bit brighter through the keys. Though this is not a deal breaker for me. Apps download quickly and without issue. The hinges feel very durable and like they will last. Overall I couldn't be happier with this laptop!!! I think Asus and AMD have a fan for life now I am so happy that they are together in this great product! Buy it you won't regret it.
