Decent computer for the money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not a bad little computer for the money. Not enough ports and the unfortunate lack of PCMCIA slot limits legacy hardware. It also seems to be having issues with the HDMI port being intermittent. Really should have come with Windows 10 Pro at this price point.

Nice computer but watch out for OS bugs
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Computer does not keep accurate date and time. Could be that Windows 10 causes this. But after all, this is 2016 and one would have thought that accurate date and time settings would have been settled a long time ago. Could be the computer clock but not sure.

Hard drive crashed
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my son. Had it about a month and the hard drive crashed. It was under warranty and they replaced it but thought it would have lasted longer than a month. We shall see with the replacement.

Mixed Blessing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. On paper, this laptop is a really nice machine, and very cost-effective. At $899 (at least when I purchased it), its Type C USB 3.0 port is not common to laptops of this class, its 2 TB hard drive and 12 GB RAM size are quite generous, and its higher performance i7 processor is a nice addition. But in practice, it has some annoying quirks and some limitations that keep me from rating it a 5 star. Regarding general usability, it is very attractive, but the black finish is a magnet for fingerprints and dust. ASUS does provide a microfiber cloth, presumably for cleaning the screen, which can be used on the other surfaces to quickly clean it up (though this may not be recommended, as getting the cloth dirty or greasy will affect its ability to clean the touch screen). The bigger frustration is the location of the power switch: it is quite easy when picking up the laptop to inadvertently press it, causing the machine to go to sleep when moving or otherwise handling it. While this is not catastrophic and will not result in any data loss (at least with the default setup for this button's function), it is at the very least inconvenient. Otherwise, the mousepad size is quite nice, though tapping it does not always work well, requiring several attempts to double-tap, and sometimes resulting in having to use the actual pad keys instead to select things. The display is quite bright and nice, as is the back-lit keyboard brightness (I am currently writing this on the couch with a west facing window behind me, and the glare is quite acceptable, as the screen is bright enough to easily overcome it). The keyboard has a reasonable feel (not great), but I must say the light leakage around the keys is a bit annoying when looking at a glancing angle at night (even with the key brightness turned to the lowest of its three settings). Its layout is a bit odd (at least compared to others I have gotten used to), but with time I'm sure I will adapt. Also, the hinges seem rugged, but time will tell regarding how well they maintain tension (competing designs with full width hinges may do better, but I have no experience with those). As one reviewer pointed out, these laptops do tend to "sputter" or lag for reasons that I cannot ascertain, as these events do not seem to be connected with anything I'm doing at the time, and are not periodic in any way. And twice the laptop hung for several tens of seconds, only to resume with a notification bubble saying it had recovered from a display driver crash. On the plus side, I lost no data, there were no blue screens, and I could continue on with what I was doing. On the negative side, it is annoying and unpredictable, and it occurred once with the integrated HD 520 graphics hardware, and once with the nVidia 940 accelerated hardware (which at least indicates the ability to apply particular video card hardware to different software seems to work, which was a concern of another reviewer). Other possible issues (possibly limited to my machine) include the DVD drive, which has had problems at least once reading an older Microsoft product CD (yes, it was a CD -- that's how old it was!). I am a bit concerned about this, as my Dell laptop started out that way and eventually required a drive replacement. We'll see how this one fares. Since there is a way to run the old Windows Experience software (it is still embedded in the operating system, though the user interface has been removed and it requires a third party application to easily access), I did that as a way to compare this laptop with my seven year old Dell laptop (an old dual core Pentium machine that at the time was the highest performance laptop Dell offered). It's user experience rating was 3.8; this laptop was 5.8, primarily limited by the integrated graphics and hard drive: Processor 7.5 Memory (RAM) 7.6 Graphics (integrated) 5.8 Graphics (3D) 9.9 Hard Drive 5.9 All in all, I found these to be reasonable scores. My quad core desktop (admittedly about four years old, but a higher end home-built unit at the time) only had a 7.1 rating for both processor and memory, 6.8 for both graphics figures (it uses a PCI nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS), and -- like this laptop -- a 5.9 for its 1 TB hard drive speed. The biggest limitation for this laptop is obviously the hard drive, which I assume can be remedied with an SSD upgrade if desired (programs can be set up to use the faster nVidia graphics hardware to address the integrated graphics' score). That said, playing with SpaceEngine (a graphics and computationally intensive planetarium-type space simulation) resulted in very smooth scrolling graphics, so I am not displeased with the general performance of this machine but (I'm not a gamer, so I can't comment on its applicability -- or lack thereof -- for that). And regarding a prior reviewer's frustration with ASUS, I can empathize with him (I too have had lemons with other manufactures, and sometimes more than one in a row), but since ASUS OEMs laptops to other big name manufacturers (HP, as an example), simply swearing off ASUS products is no guarantee you're not actually getting an ASUS product anyway. Honestly, it's the feature set and customer support experience that you're really buying, and regarding the latter, I have no experience to comment on. (That said, I have dealt with HP and Dell, and I must say that I favor Dell far more than HP). Either way, I would recommend an extended warranty through Best Buy that includes the accidental insurance, as questions about the hinges and even dropping it by mistake will not be of any concern (and no, I don't work for Best Buy or get commissions on extended warranty sales, which generally I tend to avoid and usually only buy on things I carry around a lot and are more likely to drop or wear out). So in general I am pleased with this laptop, though I hope the stuttering will be addressed at some point down the road with a software or firmware update. So far, it is not bad enough to make me question my purchase, nor are the other quirks I mentioned above, Consequently I marked "yes" that I would recommend this to a friend.
