We purchased the ASUS Q551LN-BSI708 Convertible 2-in-1 Laptop after weeks of reviewing and looking at numerous brands. As my son was getting to go off to college to study biomedical engineering, we knew we wanted a computer that had the features this computer had. We liked the graphics capabilities, the processor, the computer weight (very light) and with the Student program, we received a very nice price discount as well. I wanted to wait before posting a formal review until my son had a few months working with it and taking it to class...but no need. HE LOVES IT. The 2-n-1 aspect of this laptop has been an outstanding feature for him. Asus is ACES with us.

Well, this is a sort of love hate relationship with this thing. Asus sort of missed the boat on a couple of things. First of all, they make a big advertising deal about this thing being a convertible laptop with an optical drive. This is indeed a rarity but you would think Asus would also include some software that would allow DVD's to actually be played. Out of the box there is no way to use this as a DVD player. In order to use the DVD you have to download something like VLC in order to make the optical drive functional. Second, even my cheap little 11" laptop can stream music from my phone over bluetooth and play it over the laptop speakers. Asus is incapable of that. Battery life is abysmal and the machine gets really hot, really quickly. Other than those items, the machine is a good machine. It is fast and responsive and the Nvidia graphics give it a boost.
Oh, one more thing. The touch screen seems to have problems detecting touch all along the bottom of the screen.

I bought this computer on short notice, because my 7-year old Dell XPS laptop finally died and couldn't be brought back to life. I needed to get it replaced immediately, so that I could restore my files (fortunately I had just run a full backup) and continue with my work. It took me about 3 hours of shopping at Best Buy and another vendor, but this machine had everything I needed, and more. Hopefully enough "more" that it will remain functional with the evolving technology for a few years. And, though I didn't buy it for gaming, it's pretty well-equipped for any games currently out there, and has more than enough resources to handle Windows 10 (which should be available to me in the next few days). A week after I bought the ASUS, Best Buy dropped the price on it by $100, and they cheerfully refunded that to my credit card when I took the receipt into them. It's still new, and I don't really care for Windows 8, but so far, so good! It was very easy to set-up and I was up and running in a few minutes.

I purchased this Asus laptop for graduate school. I have been extremely happy with it so far. The touchscreen is great and I appreciate the DVD / CD drive since many laptops do not include these anymore. One negative is that the SmartGesture driver has a wonky hiccup with Windows 10, but there is a way to repair this feature. Originally, my mouse / white arrow was showing the loading icon (little blue spinney circle) almost continuously. I had a friend look at it and this person was able to "repair" the SmartGesture driver. Now all good! Beautiful machine.

I'm glad I brought it. Has everything I need including the latest processor and a DVD Drive!! It's a little on the heavy side and even-though it has a back-lit keyboard, under certain daytime lighting conditions, the keys can be hard to see. Very good specs on this machine.

Only downfall - it has a DVD player ... but no software to run a DVD. Not a pleasant surprise. Actually a disappointment. As a computer - it rocks. For the price, well worth it.

My Toshiba laptop was running vista so it was time to upgrade I took over 3 months of reading reviews both pro and consumer. I really didn't want to get windows 8.1 but... Anyway I love this Asus laptop it's fast has good sound when needed I use it mostly in desktop mode but have used the other two windows 8.1 screens I did disable having to
put in user name and password which makes coming out of sleep mode faster than I ever thought possible. I wasn't going to spend 799 on a laptop but I am really glad I took the plunge I haven't any complaints so far. It does everything I wanted it to do....

Love this laptop. It flips around to become a tablet. It has great graphics/picture. It is fast enough to run a bunch of programs at once. Keys are backlit. The "Asus" on the outside of the laptop lights up, so that's rad. It's pretty great overall.

Wasn't planning on buying anything but a universal power supply for an older laptop. Was just poking around, looking at the new ones when I saw this one. Liked the specs so decided to buy it. Didn't even know it was a 2 in 1 until I got it home and read the manual once the computer was fired up.
Fast enough to do what I do, more than enough memory to have the multiple applications open that I usually work in. OK for coding, but prefer two screens for that, and this has the capability to hook up another.
Haven't used the nvidia graphics yet, so no comments on that.

With my old laptop being several years old, it was time to upgrade. Being a gamer, finding a laptop with gaming aspects to it would definitely be a plus. Seeing that this laptop contained an nvidia graphics card had me interested, especially when the staff told me it was designed for gaming as well. I'm glad I got this laptop. It runs many of my games great and is very comfortable to use.

I bought this laptop to replace my wife's old desktop and her laptop. This laptop not only has a better processor (an Intel Core i7), more memory (8gb upgradable to 16gb), gigabit speed networking,...and a dedicated 2gb video card so she can play just about any game she would want to play. Now, she doesn't have to worry if an application is installed on both of her computers ... she only needs one now ... this one! (and it's less maintenance and less licenses to purchase for me)

You can only upgrade to 12 GBs of Ram. Max memory expansion is one 8 GBs DDR3 chip only, the other 4 GB of Ram is embedded on the Mother Board.
Screen uses CCFL for Back-lighting not LED. Mine went out in 3 months and now there is a red hue and will need to replace the screen.
Windows 8.1 is laughable how unintuitive it is. the apps and start screen is frustrating.
Office 365 and the cloud services are also a huge step back sence you have to pay each year to use them.
Best Alternative:
Get a name brand computer like Toshiba or Dell
try to stay with windows 7
Macintosh has stepped up there game a lot and is most likely the best way to go.

Such a great laptop! It has all the qualities I was looking for. I love the backlit keyboard, the size is perfect and the performance is outstanding. Another big plus for me was the built-in SD card reader as I love to take tons of photos. You definitely won't feel as though you short changed yourself with this computer. Great product.

I'm a full time college student and I was looking for a computer that would last (after my last one broke).
It's a little pricey, but after months of research i decided this was the one.
It's light weight, fast and super easy to use. The graphics on it are AMAZING!!!! I use my laptop a to play sims 4 and to watch movies also.
I love that when it's open the ASUS symbol lights up and when it's dark the keys do too.
I do find that I don't use the flip screen that much, but it nice to be able to adjust the screen to where you want with no worries.
The mouse works great so does the touch screen.
The only bad I have found about this computer so far is that it smudges and leaves finger prints easily on the outside. I have a screen protector for the screen too.
Best buy I have made yet!!!

We have purchased cheap (under $400) laptops before and never been satisfied with their performance. Decided it was time to spend a little more money and get something with a faster processor and larger screen. This laptop is nice because it has the speed and capacity for the work we do and so far we have had no problems with it. The only thing I would like is if it had a solid state drive like my Chromebook which seems like a few less moving parts that could fail. I do like the lights on the keyboard which really helps when I am watching TV at night with the lights out and getting some work done.

I was just looking for a fast laptop to replace one the crashed on me. This is my second ASUS and I personally think they are making the best windows based computers on the market right now. The computer is lighting fast and does everything I need it too interns of web browsing and multimedia applications. I personally did not need the convertible function, but it does work well everytike I have used it.

I love the ability to be able to switch from laptop to tablet depending on the situation. My son does online school and he loves to convert it into a tablet and use the touch screen for his work.
