I have had my share of Chromebooks over the years, but I think this is the best one I have used. Rather easily. It is a nice mix of hardware, and the software has gotten quite refined as well as versatile. There is a lot to like.
It is well-built (apparently passing a military-grade durability rating), solid, and “feels good in the hand.” That said, it Is still a nice weight and easy to take on the go. The screen is a good size and delivers a nice-looking image, while also being touchscreen. Colors are accurate and it all just looks good. If I had to nitpick, it could be a bit brighter, but it is a non-issue for me. I do really like the matte/antiglare tech, but that is a personal preference. The keyboard felt good, and was easy to get used to, but I really wish they would have made it backlit. Kind of a miss for me. Design-wise, overall, I like the look and color. It is not the sleekest machine out there, but I think it looks good. Honestly, I think most people should like it.
I think for me, some of the spec choices are a big part of what sets this machine apart from some others in the Chromebook space. On some level not a lot is needed in this space, but having a more powerful chip, 8GB of DDR5, and 128GB of storage (UFS) is nice to see. Not only does all of this deliver better performance, but also, and maybe more importantly, a better experience. Everything was a tick snappier, and while I am not saving a ton of data locally, having a little more space to play with is very welcome. It just eliminates a common concern. A nice add. Lastly, those spec bumps may provide a little future proofing going forward. Another nice add.
Additionally, I like the connectivity and port choices. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked well and without issue. 2 USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (on opposite sides), 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 1 HDMI 1.4 out, and a Combo Audio jack are a nice mix of ports and all that I need. All in all, I am very pleased with all the hardware.
That said, I think the software meets or even surpasses it. ChromeOS has come a long way, and I am quite impressed with how it all comes together on this machine. Setup is very easy. Very. I was up and running immediately. Of course, there are all the Google Apps (including Gemini, but more on that later) which most people use, and I am heavily invested in as well all Chrome OS Apps, but now you can do more. Having access to the Play Store really gives you access to a large collection of software. Office 365, Photoshop, etc…can all be used. I have to think most people will be covered here.
Performance-wise, I have zero complaints. Startups are near-immediate and apps open without lag. In the day to day, everything is very snappy. While I realize this machine is not really “meant” for gaming, I did a little (light variety) and was happy to see that it handled it well. Battery life has also been good. To this point, as rated, with “great” stand by times, but a lot of that will be use case and I need some more time to see how it does. I don’t think it will be a problem though. Also, I appreciate having the USB-C charging ports on opposite sides. It just gives a little flexibility.
Lastly, I feel I need to touch on the Gemini software. I personally find it useful, and it runs well on this Chromebook. That said, the fact that Google is including 12 months of their Gemini Pro plan ($20/month) with this machine is a very good deal. It comes with the AI component, but also additional things, (2 TB storage, 10% store discount, etc…) and of course make sure the offer is still live and you are eligible, but this should not be overlooked.
Ultimately, I really like this Chromebook. I think the “Plus” designation fits, and it does everything I need and want it to do. Well. I think for all you can do, and get, it’s a great value.

It has definitely nailed the keyboard, in fact it’s nailed all the basics in my mind. The issues I have with it are simple and more about my personal preferences. It is plastic, it is a laptop (not two in one), and doesn’t support an active stylus. I realize that if you aren’t necessarily looking for those in your device then you wont care at all and if you are looking for those, you can’t go find a different device.
I love that it has a touch screen even if I may only use it 10% of the time as Android has a tendancy to sometimes not support a mouse and keyboard well and having a touchscreen as backup is key with chromeOS even if it is becoming less of an issue. The Full HD is perfect for this type of device. I personally have no reason to have 4k for this type device, movies look good on it and i love how it isn’t shiny like most touch screens are. The bezels around the screen aren’t small but that gives room for a nice camera at the top that works well enough for a a video call and the microphone works lets you be heard clearly as well.
If you are hoping to use Microsoft word/excel apps directly on device you might find that hard to do and if you can figure out how to get them on there they will always try to redirect you to the web, if you are happy enough with the web experience then this is a great device to use 365 with. I have found that i prefer most of the web experiences over apps, i’ll always try the app first but it seems like the majority of mine have not been optimized to chromeOS.
Now to the real advantages of ChromeOS, this battery will last for days if you use it sporadically. With other OSes you usually want to have it plugged in when you aren’t using it as the parasitic drain can be rather horrible. Not so with ChromeOS, and when you open the lid, it is up and running before you even have the lid fully open most of the time (unless it has been a day, then you have to unlock it). The near instantaneous nature of chromeOS is addictive to use as a first line device when you just need a keyboard and nice writing experience. For my management duties for a non profit I help with that only has a Google account and online software, it is absolutely the perfect device when I need to deal with something.
Now I talked about the fact that it was plastic up above and I don’t know how I feel about it, part of me is like, oh this is too light. But also, it is actually pretty strong, my wife threw it on the floor in my office when she was cleaning the house and I put some weight on it before I felt it and was worried I had just broken it, it survived without a scratch or broken screen. So I do have to say that it is stronger than it initially feels and more I use it the more I appreciate just how light it is.
The performance of this has been quite good, I haven’t had it lag at all. Everything I throw at it including the entirely too many tabs being open just continues to work and I love that it has a decent amount of ports including a USB C port on each side that can charge it. There are two regular USB ports on the right side as well as an HDMI and aux port.
Pros:
Touch screen is is matte
A good selection of ports
light weight
keyboard feels good to type on
Instant on
Good performance
Cons:
Not a 2 in 1 design
Almost feels too light

For the sake of transparancy, I wanted to give it 3 strs, but part of my desire is due it's OS. That would be like giving a family sedan a 3 star rating for not being a sports car. I mean, it is what it is. More on that later.
Out of the box, it has an attractive look, and feels high quality. Nice tactile feel on the keyboard, mouse pad and touchscreen. The screen resolition is 1920 x 1080, but the refresh rate is 60Hz, meaning that it refreshes the screen 60 times per second. Perfectly adequate for daily use, entertainment and productivity, but not optimal for some games. That said, most gamers would not even considder this machine, but for every day use, the screen is nice.
At 128 gig SS storage, it is adequate for most casual use. Having 256 or 512 gig wouold be nice, but 128 is OK for entertainment and productivity suites. Memory is 8 gig. Again, on the low end, but for this machine and it's users, certainly adequate.
For input, it has one HDMI, two USB-A, and 2 USB-C ports. The USB-C ports are used for noth charking the machine, as well as for charging external devices.
This machine is rated at WiFi 6, which is very good connectivity and stability. It also has a 1080 p front facing camera and microphone. Perfectly adequate for on-line communication.
All in all a decent machine, but back to the 3 star want, but 5 star rating. While I am an Adroid guy (have been for as long as I can remember), the Chrome OS is... Quirky. To be fair, back to my sedan/sports car comaprison, Chrome OS is probably really good, but having spent decades both at work and home on Windows, I am competely engrained in that OS. Thus, I gave it a 4 as it is not the fault f the machine, but moreso the user.
Now the dealbreaker, and catalyst for wanting to give it 3 stars... There is no backlight on the keyboard. I use my laptops a great deal at nigh in my self-selected dark living areas and bedroom. On an airplane at night? No backlight = no good. You would think a machine at this price point would have the BL KB. Dissapointing.
End of the day, it is what it is. And it does what it does. Fortunately, I have several other options, but this will be a nice option for brainless app gaming, basic streaming, and Internet browsing when I travel. It is light, portable and decent battery life.

I’ve been using the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX3402CV for about a week now, and I’ve got to say—I’m really impressed with what this Chromebook offers for the price. Right off the bat, the Rock Grey color gives it a premium, understated look. It’s sleek, modern, and feels surprisingly solid in hand for something this lightweight and portable. It definitely doesn’t feel cheap.
Performance-wise, this thing is snappy. The Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM make everyday tasks a breeze. I’ve had tons of tabs open, running Google Docs, YouTube, and messaging apps at the same time without any lag. The 128GB SSD helps keep everything quick too—boot times are near-instant, and the system stays responsive no matter what I throw at it.
ChromeOS runs like a dream on this machine. It’s clean, simple, and super fluid. If you’re already in the Google ecosystem, this thing just works. Apps from the Play Store install fast, updates are seamless, and there’s no bloat or clutter to deal with.
The 14-inch Full HD touchscreen is another highlight. It’s bright, crisp, and super responsive—great for compatible Android games or just navigating with taps and swipes. I’ve even done a bit of light photo editing on it. It’s not a tablet replacement, but it definitely adds versatility.
Battery life has also been great. I’ve been getting through full workdays easily—usually around 10+ hours with regular use. Whether I’m working, streaming, or just browsing, I don’t find myself hunting for a charger often.
Now, for the one downside: there’s no backlit keyboard. Not a dealbreaker for me, but something to keep in mind if you tend to work in low light. The typing experience itself is good—keys feel solid—but yeah, that backlight would’ve made it feel a bit more premium.
Conclusion:
Overall, the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX3402CV punches way above its weight. It looks good, feels great to use, and handles everyday computing with zero fuss. If you’re looking for a reliable, fast Chromebook with a touchscreen and solid battery life, this one’s easy to recommend—just be aware of the non-backlit keyboard.

a Chromebook for Grown Ups (and work and play)

I’ve owned a few Chromebooks. The first I ever bought was for my kid in middle school. It was an ASUS too and I found it to be good value but never really thought of them as a serious laptop for work. The ASUS Chromebook Plus with Intel i5 has changed my view. It looks like a serious business laptop - in dark greys and using Gemini on it (bonus 12 months of Gemini Advanced is included!) I am sold that a Chromebook can be used for serious tasks.
First - in the box.
ASUS Chromebook CX34 14”
USB C Power Adapter
Out of the box, the immediate observation is the ASUS CX34 looks premium. It feels solid and well made. There’s also no gloss surfaces. Even the touch screen is matte - so no fingerprint marks. Showing it to a friend, their immediate comment was “it looks like a real laptop”, which if you have used Chromebooks before you understand.
You get plenty of ports (2x USB C/Display Port Combo, 1 Left/1 Right), 2 x USB A (both on the right) a headphone jack, and a full side HDMI port. The full size HDMI is a nice surprise given the USB C Display Port support - but nice given in a meeting or conference room, you’re more likely to find a HDMI cable these days. There’s also a camera, with an included privacy on/off shield (clearly marked orange when closed). There’s no microSD or SD card slot - so there’s no ability to expand the memory outside of a USB drive. More on that later.
Setup was easy, power on - sign into WiFi and connect your Google account. There was a quick software update and then I was able to hit the play store. I installed Office 365 (needed for work) and then to put the ASUS CX34 through same gaming paces, Roblox and StarDew Valley. I also used Google Docs (for personal, like writing the draft of this review) and started to play with Gemini. Interesting, Zoom and Acrobat and Apple Music was preinstalled.
The good news - this laptop is GREAT for productivity and light gaming. The only thing I will note on gaming is while most Android games are a small footprint, the absence of a microSD expansion may bothersome (it’s not a deal breaker, just don’t fill it with games!). That said, for gaming and work - this is where you get the benefit of a proper Intel i5 processor. The ASUS CX34 is the fastest Chromebook I have ever used as a result.
The sound is good, enough for light games and more than good enough for a zoom calls (although I paired my Pixel Buds to the Bluetooth). The 14” screen is great clear and bright, and the touchpad responsive but it did seem to pick up accidental touches, more of a Chrome OS issue than ASUS. What stands out is that the CX34 has a real touchscreen - I wish it could open to a tablet form factor, but that said, the touchscreen is responsive and found myself using it more than I expected. Again, I wish the CX34 could be used like a tablet, but it only opens maximum flat.
I also let my kid play Roblox and there were no complaints, except for when I had to pry the ASUS CX34 back from him haha! The downside, if there is one, and the reason I am giving it 4 stars is while the CX34 runs whisper quiet it does get warm on your lap on the right side - I am guessing this is where the i5 CPU is located. It’s not hot, but warm enough that I was surprised.
The only last thing to think about is battery life. I used the CX34 all Memorial Day weekend, including impromptu. Despite a “real” processor, I was able to use all day from a full charge. This was not doing a day of Zoom calls, more browsing, videos, music and games while on WiFi. So more like medium use with frequent breaks. I am keen to see how the CX34 stacks up on a work day.
Overall, love the ASUS CX34. I plan to use it every day. If you’re after a Chromebook that is for “grown ups” that is perfect for business and occasional gaming. The Intel i5 make the ASUS CX34 a great choice. If it was able to go full tablet mode, I’d give it a 5/5.
