Good Computer, but Better After Upgrade

Out of the box this computer is fine. It is a good size, well built, and runs well. However, I had concerns with how slow the included 5400rmp 1TB HDD made the computer (and this is coming from a computer that had the same size/speed HDD, not a SSD). In the first few days when I was getting it set up and synced with Dropbox, other applications, etc. it ran very slow and was using 100% of the disk pretty much at all times. This was confusing to me as the rest of the components ran perfectly (I'm particularly impressed by the i5 processor as I'm used to an i7 - I honestly don't notice a measurable difference). I decided to upgrade the HDD to a SSD and oh man - what a difference! The computer now flies and I have no issues. It boots up/wakes from sleep with hardly any lag time and disk usage is tremendously reduced. I even ran The Sims 4 and it played without issue (this is not a gaming computer however and will not do well with graphics-intensive games). With the SSD upgrade I would give this computer 5 stars, but out of the box only 4. I still feel as though I got a good deal as I purchased the computer for $499 after sale and College Student Deal discount, and essentially had the SSD paid for by trading in my old computer. Important Note for Upgrading - there are 2 screws hidden underneath the rounded feet protectors closest to the hinges. These MUST be removed in order to do any upgrades. The feet are just stuck on and come off fairly easily with gentle use of a tool. They restick back on just fine. I do highly recommend this computer - but with an upgrade to an SSD. With both the computer and SSD on sale (Samsung 850 EVO 500GB) I still paid less than the $799.99 retail price of this unit, and less than comparable units.

For the amount of hard drive space and RAM, this computer is a bargain. The cons are the weight and I don't like having to login to my account every time I use the laptop, but this is more of a Windows 10 issue. It scratches easily and I wish they had different colors than the silver. Other than those minor downsides, I love the laptop's speed and functionality. I don't use the tablet feature much, but my daughter loves it for games.

First Glance: Great Computer, Lots of Power

    Posted .

This is my first full day with the computer, it is very elegant to use. My favorite things about it are the fingerprint reader and the touchpad. Scrolling with this touchpad with two fingers is just like liquid. Reminds me a lot of the MacBook Pro, although I'm not an apple fan, they make their touchpad extremely hard to beat and this laptop's touchpad doesn't fall very short from that one. Power You know how when you go to use the search in windows 10 and it lags for quite some time... well with this PC, it doesn't do that. There's a lot of raw power embedded inside of this beast. Although it's not great for intense gaming, and it even tells you that in the details under the graphics section, it's a fantastic piece of machinery. Physical Buttons The placement of the power and volume buttons threw me off a bit, but after using the device in tablet mode, it came in handy to have them there. There have been complaints of the placement, but I really think it was a smart move on ASUS' part. The keyboard is very nice to use, I really like that they allow you to adjust the brightness of the backlight for the keyboard. Makes it really nice to use in very dark environments. The way it feels to type on this computer is very elegant as well, I definitely prefer this keyboard over my previous laptops hands down; I would even say I like this better than my actual keyboard from Logitech that I have at work. USB-C I wish I had more devices that used USB-C, I have the latest galaxy device which does use it, but I also don't have a cable to test it out as of yet, check back for an update when I get the new cable. Tablet Mode Unlike previous 2-in-1 devices I have had, this device is by far the fastest to switch into tablet mode when flipping it around. There have been occasions where it would come out for some reason, but that only happens 2 in 10 times. Love the tablet function on this device. Since this is my first full day with the product, and since I haven't covered everything, I'll be editing this review with my full review at the end of June 2017.

Awsome looks awesome performance huge hard drive windows 10 converts easy to a tablet comfortable keyboard easy to use you name it this is what I think a laptop should be. This is gonna be my laptop for school I researched all others from best buy and saw the specs for the price rivals the laptops 2-3x the price not match these. You can buy what you want but this is the biggest bang for your buck at this price.

This is a critical review, but if you're thinking about buying this computer please read the last few sentences at the bottom. .I wanted to really love this computer, and while I think it's a great computer mine had major issues right out of the box. The first time it booted up the way it went about it just seemed off from my experiences of other brand new computers being started for the first time. After DLing a 4gig update, again weird, it got through all the registration and warranty stuff. My old computer that this one replaced was an original gen. I3 with 4G of ram. This ASUS was slower! Investigating showed the drive was being used at 100% all the time. This seems to be a fairly common problem on Windows 10, so I spent 3-4 hours (on a brand new computer mind you) trying everything I could find on the new to fix it. Nothing worked. I decided to do a factory reset and see what that might fix. After the reset the computer booted up totally different from the first time, the screens were different, the options were different, just different. Anyway, after getting all the initial bootup stuff completed, the hard drive problem was still there. A few weird things happened after this bootup. I signed up for the free 25G Dropbox offer and since I already have an account I received an Email from Dropbox that I had logged on with a Windows 8 computer! Hmm. I took the computer back to BB abd let the geeksquad have a look. They changed some settings but the HD problem never went away. They theorized that this model was originally a W8 computer but was upgraded to W10 at the factory. Instead of the factory using a clean W10 install, they used a W10 upgrade and something went wrong on this particular computer. That would also help explain the 4G worth of updates on the first bootup They didn't have any more in stock at this store, and I didn't want to drive to another store and couldn't wait for one to ship so I exchanged it for a different brand computer. All that being said, if they had another in stock at my store I would have given it a second chance. I really liked this computer and the fingerprint scanner was awesome! As long as BB keeps their 15-day return policy I wouldn't hesitate to buy this computer. If there is going to be a problem you'll find it the first day and if a return is needed, it's easy and painless at your local store. My guess is you'll be fine, though, I probably got the rare lemon.

I bought this computer for video editing, three years later it's still working like the day I unboxed it. I've used it rigorously for hours everyday and have VERY rarely had any issues with performance. It's mind blowing how it cool it stays - even during intense video rendering and gaming. It's an amazing computer and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Best computer I have ever had

A few days ago I bought a new laptop computer and I am extremely happy with it. Probably the best computer I have ever had and I have been using computers since the first home computers came on the market. It is a ASUS Q504UA. I bought it at Best Buy and am so impressed I want to telly you what I like about it. Everything. It has two hard drives. One is a SSD (Solid State Drive) and I am amazed at how fast it it. That is where my Windows 10 operating system is. It only takes about 2 or 3 seconds to boot or turn off and while it's running it is blazing fast. The SSD is only 128 GB so you can't store a lot of data on it so I store all my data on the second drive which is a 1 TB hard drive. Plenty of space there and it is so easy to set up so that everything automatically stores there. The ASUS Windows 10 settings have special settings to take care of things that apply to the ASUS computer. This wonderful computer has a backlit keyboard which I love if I am working in a low light area, 15.6" Full HD multitouch screen so I can use it as a laptop or a tablet since it folds all the way back. It has a 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7500U mobile processor which is FAST and Bluetooth interface so it syncs with everything including my smart phone. The fingerprint reader makes logging in fast and easy. Did I say that I love this computer? I do.

I bought this computer because I wanted a computer that I could use for entertainment, be able to from home, and be able to do both while traveling. Battery Life - I keep it on battery saver all the time, the battery lasts forever I'd say on average about 6 hours. Display - The resolution on the screen is amazing, it is extremely clear and detailed. I love the tablet feature, the screen just turns all the way around and it turns into a tablet Speakers - the speakers are about average for a computer like this. They are on the bottom so they could get muffled depending on where you set it down. Keyboard - I do a lot of accounting for work so a 10-key is a must. It's a bit squished, but it's easy to type on and the light up keys are great. You can adjust the brightness too. Touchpad - it has a biometric fingerprint reader built in which is really nice to not have to type in a long password. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. It also operates really quick and smooth. I don't have a fast internet connection, so I'm sure it would be much faster with a faster internet connection.

    Sleek and powerful

The 15" HD screen is great. The wider screen allows for a 10 key. I have not used the folding feature at all (tablet mode) as it is relatively heavy if used as a tablet. I have just kept it as a laptop. The color and feel is sleek and attractive. I5 processor is powerful for the computing I do (general streaming/surfing and some light coding). Would give it a full 5 stars, but it is a bit pricey.

We needed a new laptop to replace my wife's old one and this has fit the bill nicely. While this may be my technological dinosaur speaking, I would have liked the presence of a DVD/Blu-ray drive.

I've had this laptop less than two years, and it's already died on me. It's been sent in once for repairs, which meant it had to be reverted back to factory settings so I had to start all over again, and that's apparently what's going to have to happen again, assuming it can even be fixed. In addition, Asus customer service is terrible. I will never buy another product from this company.

NEVER BUY ANY ASUS PRODUCT EVER!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Warning: If you buy any ASUS product, in my case a higher end laptop, and it breaks (manufactures warranty or not) THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS COMPLETELY USELESS. Had repeated and various problems and sent back laptop (4) times, all refurbished and non-functional. After the fourth time, I was promised a new model, still in the litigation process, been a month now and they are trying to send me another refurbished same model. I work as a supervisor in State Government and will do everything in my limited power to use a different company for Government business. Best Buy was excellent, and fully understand that models break down, but was severely disappointed in the customer service from ASUS. Buyer be extremely cautious. I just lost 1200$ to ASUS and have nothing to show for it. I was always told how great of a company ASUS was and how great their components are but that is NO LONGER TRUE! They have not won any significant awards since 2013 (you can look that up) and are no longer this great company. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months. Here is my story, if you want the details of what I went through: I bought an ASUS notebook (Republic of Gamers) in 12/2015.....it failed in April 2015 for a failed component in my charger, it fried my daughter board, sent into their repair center....3 weeks later got the same model back and fixed...it failed AGAIN in July 2015 with a failed Intel Graphics card.... sent back to repair center....ANOTHER 3 weeks later got the same computer back fixed......failed AGAIN in Aug. 2015, failed NVIDA graphics card....sent in to repair...3 weeks later got a refurbished same model replacement.....had that for 3 weeks then failed AGAIN when a component failed in my screen....sent back in to repair center...3 weeks later got MY 2ND REFURBISHED same model and it came BROKEN!! It didn’t even work when I got it. I sent that model in the repair center, got there 11/4, they mixed up my RMA number so I did not match my serial number, took a week to figure that you, I was promised by their top supervisors that with this many failed model I would be eligible for a new, upgraded different model replacement. Couldn’t get ahold of the supervisor I have been talking to, she was avoiding my phone calls. I got an email from the support center that they are offering me AGAIN, THE SAME MODEL REFURBISHED replacement for the 3rd time. If I was to reject this offer, and they choose not to offer me anything else, they said they are going to SEND BACK MY BROKEN COMPUTER and that would be it! The customer support said they actually have nothing to do with what replacement you would get. It’s all up to the repair center, and you cannot speak to the repair center, because, “it is not in their job description to talk to the public.” All this has happened while in the manufactures warranty. I bought the computer 11 months ago and have not had the computer in my possession for 4 of those 11 months. Once again, beware, if you decide to go with ASUS because you are risking hundreds or thousands of dollars (in my case).
