Best gaming laptop for the money

The ASUS GL702VS is the best gaming laptop you can buy for the money. It was on sale so I got it for $1,349 and then got 10% back in rewards points. Pros: The Core-i7 7700HQ is light years ahead of most laptops U-series CPU's and faster than the 6700HQ it replaced. You will be hard pressed to find a laptop with the nVidia GTX1070 for under $1700. 12 GB of ram is enough for most anyone right now but it is expandable with two DIMM slots. The wireless card has been extremely fast with no drop in connectivity. The keyboard is one of the best I've used on a laptop but I think the spacing on a 17.3" frame is the trick. The screen is crystal clear at 1080 and I haven't noticed any fatigue like I've seen with other screens. M.2 expansion slot is available for an SSD. Plenty of ports for connectivity also! It is a relatively lightweight and compact design for the size of the screen and the power it has. Cons: This laptop saves a bit on price by not having a solid state drive but instead a 1TB mechanical hard drive. The plus side is that there is room to add (in addition to, not replace) an M.2/NVMe solid state drive. The screen comes from the factory clocked at 75hz but does have G-sync, which is far less than some options/competitors with 120hz. I changed the refresh rate to a custom 100hz and have yet to have any issues and it functions very well. Additionally, there are reports that it runs hot and will actually be outperformed by laptops with the same hardware. This issue seems to be related to the heat pipe design and the layout of the motherboard.I have not experience 90*C use like some others have but here but peak around 78*C during heavy loads. There are a few tricks that can be done to lower heat: First: the CPU is over-volted from the factory. Using Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility, I under-volted the CPU by .120v which led to a 10*C reduction in heat at 100% load and 100% stability. This also led to a reduction in the maximum fan speeds (3,20 RPM) needed to maintain that drop which means the laptop was quieter and running cooler. Second: I added a 10 year old twin 80mm fan cooling pad. Despite it spinning slower and have less airflow than newer coolers (I am buying a new one), this dropped the max temp under 100% load by 5*C and another drop in required fan speeds (2,900 RPM). Third: This has been well documented on YouTube and has incredible results: a thermal re-paste of the CPU and GPU along with replacing ASUS' thermal goop on other circuitry with thermal padding dropped operating temps by 26*C (that was on stock voltage for the CPU too)! This will void your warranty though. If you're not comfortable trying this, don't. The other two options dropped over 100% load testing by 15*C and drop the fan speeds, if you manually turn the fans up in speed, it will run even cooler.

I'm only a casual PC gamer, but I've been quite happy with this laptop. It's responsive and quick, as should be expected, with room to upgrade the harddrive and ram easily though this is certainly not required for a casual gamer. It was not bloated with unnecessary software or strange default settings, so I didn't feel the need to perform a clean install of the OS. Overall, I'm quite happy with this product.

The laptop over all is great if you want to game. The gtx1070 pushes out 70+ frames on ultra for most games like pubg, overwatch, and world of Warcraft. The screen is beautiful. Unfortunately this laptop is MASSIVE, and Will thermal throttle under heavy use.... this shouldn’t be the case as there are many videos that can reduce the heat output online. 78*C cpu temp and 80*C gpu temp are completely unacceptable. This is an issue with manufacturing and nothing Bestbuy can help. Replacing the thermal past inside will drop you from 56-69C for both. The screen is not the 120hz refreshrate that I thought it would be but gsync @ 75hz is still beautiful. If you want a gaming laptop you can heat up your room and game on this is for you. Unfortunately I need something portable that doesn’t thermal throttle. Hope this helped

I'm not a gamer by ANY stretch of the imagination; yet I purchased this unit for architectural programs, CAD programs, and animated simulations. I despise seeing "Republic of Gamers" for which, my colleagues find humor in this. The machine seems to run slow or flicker at times, yet i believe that the temps rise quickly. It would be nice to have the ability to employ a secondary cooling system, that is connected to a "remote" water cooler. This is possible just as we use remote or external hard drive units. there could be plumbing lines, or tubes integrated into the design for those who decide that a secondary, external unit, (which is too big for a mobile computing system), would aid in lowering temperatures. The integrated tubes can then be connected via quick disconnect couplings that make employing this type of auxiliary cooling possible. Yes i realize that condensation needs to be addressed.

For me, this laptop was a bit much in power than what I really needed but I did it anyway. It offers so much more than I am use to based on my last laptop geared to business only. Love almost everything about it. The only down side I see is that the battery is internal and it will need to be shipped out in order to be replaced when/if that time comes.

Due to this item being on sale it was well worth it’s price. There are so many choices today for gaming laptops but the ROG is one of the best in my opinion. FPS almost never drops and graphics are sharp. Gameplay is never interrupted due to lag.

I think a lot of the reviews on here already do this laptop justice. I've only had it for two days, so I'm writing more on first-impression than anything else. Obviously it's got the specs for gaming. So, you'll be happy there, and honestly, that's really 90% of the importance there - does it perform the way you want it to? And the answer is yes. My only annoyances are these: 1. its look reminds me of the old (OLD) Dell / IBM laptops from back in the late 90's. I think the gray trim instead of the black trim does it injustice here because both me and a friend of mine both commented first-thing upon opening it up that it looked like "the family laptop from years ago." 2. It flexes where it shouldn't. The screen can be easily flexed, and the keyboard (especially the keyboard around the asdf keys) flex. I noticed the keyboard flex immediately, not because I'm typing hard, but when I was setting things up and just getting a feel for the keys it was a pretty obvious flex. It makes it feel cheap combined with (in my opinion) the 90's look. This is a pretty big annoyance in look and feel. 3. The num-pad!!!! The keys are squished together for some reason. It's actually really difficult to use the num-pad quickly because they made the number keys all half-size. Same with the dedicated arrow keys - they have just odd spacing and therefore it's not immediately intuitive to use them. 4. Hot hot hot hot hot. The heat doesn't cause an issue with the actual system overheating or anything. Everything I watched and read in reviews and benchmarks all say it's within limits - however - it's HOT to the touch. The keyboard around the jkl; keys gets really hot, while the area above the F-keys is scalding hot. DON'T try using this on your actual lap lol. 5. Back-lit keyboard. I previously had a HP Omen with black keys and red lettering like this one, and the Omen illuminated the keys much, much better. I think the keys are set every so slightly too high above the lights, so the lettering doesn't illuminate enough, and instead every key has lighting under and around it much brighter. It's not that it's bad - I've just seen it done much, much better. So, those are my negatives. Are they deal-breakers? no. Are they something that would have made me buy a different laptop had I known about it ahead of time? Possibly.

Bought this for my son’s birthday. It plays everything we could throw at it on Ultra. His favorite feature is the livestreaming stuff from Nvidia. It’s very sturdy, screen is great, sound is perfect. Cons: it’s heavy like a brick. That’s to be expected from a 17” gaming laptop though.

Asus has created an amazing product with this laptop. The 1070 card gives wonderful framerate at full settings for most games (even getting 75fps with full settings on Destiny 2). The computer does run a little hot so I would recommend a fan to go with it.

I've read a lot of reviews on this laptop from the Best Buy website and for the most part I have to agree with the majority. The major thing I would like to touch on is this models display and Hdd, with that being said let's start. As this is Best Buy brand model GL702V not the VS or VM which the other models can do 120hz and come with a m.2 drive. Don't worry about that, I was able to overclock this display to 103hz but dialed it down to 100hz. I understand it's not 120hz but you wont notice the difference believe me and its free performance. I have 2 major complaints the HDD is super slow and you have to manually adjust the fans for better temperatures because the software isn't that great and auto just keeps the noise down. Pros G-Sync 1070 gtx 8 gigs or vram Display able to be Overclocked (mileage my differ) Cons HDD Software

This laptop is awesome for the price point. The 1070 Gtx will run pretty much anything at high to ultra settings. My only gripe would be the 12gigs of ram.such an odd matching.

This Laptop has a really good price performance ratio. Good display, the 1070 GPU is powerful to handle most games at ultra at FHD, only caveat is the hhd not been a ssd that wil cost about 90 to 130 to do a easy reaplace for a SSD.

I bought this when there were very few reviews. I wanted a good gaming laptop, and chose this blindly over the 502. I play mostly blizzard titles (WOW & StarCraft II). I am very happy with this little beast. In WOW - In dungeons, it will run 115+ FPS on Ultra. Open world it will run between 45-75 FPS on Ultra. If you want a good gaming laptop then this is the one. Love the big screen. So happy I waited 2 days for this to come in instead of getting the 502 that was in stock. Some Pros: If you are stuck trying to pick this 702 or the 502... look at the back with the screen open. You will see the screen on the 502 blocks the exhaust ports. The 702 will not. The speakers are tiny but I am surprised about how much sound comes out of them. Don't expect amazing sound, but they sound amazing compared to their size. Cons: This thing gets VERY hot. I have seen the core temp get to 94c. (Use the ROG Gaming Center software to turn the fans up and you can keep the temp under control.) Things you should know: I am not sure if they still sell the 702 or 502 with the GTX1060, but spend the extra $$ and get the 1070 for the desktop graphics. After first boot up, I installed 2 games and my antivirus software. I tried to run the ROG Gaming Center software and it crashed every time I tried to open it. I found the problem was with AVAST. I even tried adding it to trusted programs. Nothing worked. Had to uninstall and get a different antivirus.

Although a little tedious as I had to address the known heating issue with this laptop I installed a utility program to control the CPU and since then have had no issues whatsoever. love the laptop design and all and after about 2 hours of playing destiny 2 it never went above 80 degrees Celsius which is more than optimal. Love the ROG series and the designs, make sure you do your homework before making a purchase. Not recommended for first time gaming computer buyers.

I go out of town for work occasionally and don't want to miss seasonal events in different PC games. This laptop amazed me at how well it played some of the most graphically demanding games. I mainly bought it for Tom Clancy's The Division, since a Global Event was happening the week I had to go out of town for work. The Division is an amazingly beautiful game when you crank the settings up and the laptop handled most of the settings maxed out. I will be using it for Destiny 2 and can almost guarantee that it will be able to hit around 60 FPS with almost all settings maxed out. This laptop does get hot though, so I would suggest getting a cooling pad with fans that aid in air flow.

I was super excited to get this laptop since I started looking for one months before. I wanted a 1070 with an i7 for under 1500 which is not an easy goal. I waited and waited until I saw this on sale. After purchase, I had a couple issues. One was that after closing the lid, the screen wouldn't come back on. After a quick google search, the firmware was updated and the issue was fixed (known issue). Second issue I had was that the PC would turn off during game play. Ever sign seemed to point towards overheating until a temp monitor was used (the ROG has a super useful button on the keyboard to directly pull up temperate and usage) and the temperatures were well in their guidelines (7700-HQ - 100c ; GTX 1070 - 85c). After a Geek Squad visit, it was advised that there may be some kind of software/OS issue and after a Windows "essential update", I have not had an issue since. I have been using it for VR without any tearing/frame drop. TL;DR - Awesome laptop for the price. It might have been a one-off issue with mine, but it was never a problem that couldn't be fixed without some guidance.
