Many appreciate its lightweight nature and the vibrant display, although some users note that the device can get warm under heavy use and that the fan can be noisy at times. The lack of a built-in webcam and limited storage are also frequently cited drawbacks. Overall, the laptop receives positive feedback for its combination of power and portability, despite some minor issues.

I have always been a Mac user, iPhone, tablets, desktops and laptops. I am so much more pleased with this laptop and how well it handles. I stream games from an Xbox console through a capture card to the laptop and monitor. This thing handles it like a charm. There is plenty of vents to keep it cool, my only suggestion it by a laptop stand to keep the vents completely open to its work. But other than that, I haven’t had any overheating issues at all.

    Powerful Portable Gaming

The primary reason to choose a 14-inch gaming laptop is portability. It is in keeping with this consideration that I am rating this offering from ASUS. Without a doubt the ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14 fulfills this role by providing powerful gaming performance, coupled with maximum portability. As someone who frequently travels, I am looking forward to taking this model with me when I am away from home. I am also looking forward to the next LAN party I attend because I now have a gaming laptop that I can easily transport and put into service anywhere. Is it bulkier than a non-gaming compact laptop? Yes of course it is due to the discrete GPU, beefier power supply, and enhanced cooling system. The specs speak for themselves, but thanks to the Ryzen 7 5800HS CPU, 16 GBs of dual channel memory, and NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPU, this laptop has more than enough horsepower to suitably run any game, new or old, on the market. This is especially thanks to the NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPU which provides blazing fast performance. I first tested it with StarCraft 2 because that is a game that I know well, and because it is a game that is still popular to this day for multiplayer. Playing StarCraft 2 for a few hours left me especially pleased by the seamless performance and framerates of 120+ FPS were consistently maintained. I then played Elden Ring and was once again very favorably impressed by the performance and playability. Since I often have downtime when I am traveling, I am very much looking forward to being able to fill that time with playing my favorite PC since I do not have as much time to game when I am home. Another nice feature of this laptop is the bright, FHD display. When I am on the go without access to a monitor, the colorful 1080P display is very much appreciated and makes gaming and watching videos easy on the eyes and very enjoyable. The brilliant colors it produces and 144Hz refresh rate really makes a difference. Some features some may miss is that the display is not a touch screen, and there is not an integrated camera.I rarely use touch screens so this is not a problem for me. Likewise I rarely use the integrated camera in my laptop except for Windows Hello facial recognition. Fortunately, the power button has a fingerprint reader built in, and is Windows Hello capable. The trackpad is very responsive and is more than capable of being used when I can't utilize a mouse, which is my preferred tracking device. There is an integrated microphone. The integrated speakers are Dolby Atmos capable and sound excellent. They really benefit from the bulkier laptop case which helps with the sound reproduction. The 512 GB drive would have been considered great a couple of years ago but today is considered basic today. This is not a problem for me because I rarely have more than 2 games installed at one time. I really like the ASUS Armoury Crate software as it provides a high degree of control and customization of the laptop. It provides an extensive readout on the laptop operating specifications and allows the laptop CPU and GPU to be configured in several different ways. I chose Performance mode on AC power and set the integrated GPU to handle non-intensive tasks and the discrete GPU to take over when needed for intensive requirements. When on battery power it is best to not engage the Nvidia GPU because it will rapidly drain the battery. There is a function in ASUS Armoury Crate called Aura which allows the selection and use of various wallpapers and illumination patterns. There are many to choose from and they are very well designed. I turned the function off because they cause a substantial hit to processing power. I will tuen Aura back on when I am not gaming and not concerned with the resource hit. When PC gaming on battery power, game dependent, I was able to get 3 or 4 hours of gameplay, with the NVIDIA GPU. Using the discrete GPU for standard computing tasks (web browsing, checking email, watching videos) I was able to get closer to 10 hours of use. The keyboard is backlit which makes the keys easy to see in low light. But during the day the whitish color makes the characters hard to make out with the backlight on. The keys have more travel than normal for a laptop, but whether you like it or not will depend on your personal preference. I prefer key travel so I like the design and find it very enjoyable to type on. A 180 watt power adapter that uses a proprietary connector is included, and is required to unlock the full potential of the device. However, I was able to use generic USB-C power adapters with varying results. A 65 watt adapter operated it at near normal parameters. While one 45 adapter powered it near normal, while a different 45 watt did not and put the GPU settings into Extreme Power Saving. This is likely due to the second 45 watt adapter having a lower AMP rating. The product box is nicely designed and prominently features the appropriate ROG branding. Likewise the laptop is aesthetically pleasing and has a premium look and feel to it. The lid exterior does not have the animation function, but does feature a multi-colored design finish that is very distinct, sharp, and noticeable. In closing this ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14 model is an excellent choice for the gamer that prioritizes portability. It runs somewhat hot, but that is to be expected because of the horsepower under the hood. Since it absolutely crushes non-gaming tasks, this allows it to meet my non-gaming requirements on the road. If you are not as concerned about portability then there are always larger gaming laptops like the Zephyrus G15 or G16, which fulfill different roles. But if a compact gaming laptop is what you need, then look no further than the ROG Zephyrus 14.

A Great Option - With Flaws

I'm going to start off this review by noting that I got this laptop for a GREAT deal. $750 for Geek Squad Certified open-box. For that price, it was obvious to me this was my choice. Before I talk about the laptop: How was the open-box experience? Just about as good as new! Only 2 things to note here: 1. The box had Best Buy's tape all over it which made it look kind of silly. Not a problem for most people, but I appreciate the unboxing experience so I figured I'd note it. And 2: It may just be a problem with my machine, but I couldn't even create an Asus account successfully to register the device. It was open box, so the original purchaser probably already did anyways. And also it's useless to do so on an Asus laptop from BestBuy because they just shove the warranty over to Geek Squad. This machine is amazing. The Ryzen processor means that I get both great performance and great battery life out of this machine. The 3060 is good enough for intermittent gaming and occasional light RTX games like Minecraft. The screen bezel is a little big, but manageable. The design is GORGEOUS, with a bit of a gamer edge in smaller details. And the repairability of this machine is really good. There were about 14 screws on the bottom I had to remove to open it up, but after that, it was a dead-simple process to explore the inside. I added more RAM and could've added another or replaced the current SSD. The fact that half of the RAM is soldered to the board is a bad move, but all things considered, I'm not too mad. Honestly, if you need a small, very portable machine with some good power, this is a great option. This is a machine that's great for blooming content creators, casual-but-invested gamers, or just general laptop users who want some really good future-proofing. But, this thing definitely isn't perfect. In no particular order, here are the cons of this machine that made me take away a star: - Thick screen bezel - Micro instead of full-sized SD card slot - Half of the RAM is soldered - Asus warranty for Best Buy products is convoluted - Only 512 GB for a $1000+ laptop - No webcam The two main flaws of this machine that made me take away a star are the fact that there is no webcam and a micro-sd card instead of a full-sized one. The SD card slot is somewhat forgivable due to the size of the device, but the webcam simply is not. This came out in the heat of the pandemic when webcams were a necessity for distance working and learning. And even as we reach the end of that whole experience, it only becomes even more obvious how terrible of a choice that was. I mean, you have a 1"+ bezel on the bottom of the screen Asus, could you not just move the screen down a little for a 720p webcam? With everything in mind, this is a great machine. It's not perfect. But especially for the price I got it, it's close enough for what I need. A great option for a 14-inch powerhouse with great battery life and forgivable compromises.

Been wanting one of these since 2020 when it first came out. It really is a great machine that can do anything and for my use case, it is the perfect laptop. Plenty of power and excellent battery life. The only thing that It needs to prove is how durable it is, as build quality is good, but nowhere near where razer and apple are.

Great laptop but be mindful of your options

Having owned a number of gaming laptops in the past in various screen sizes, I can safely say that the sweet spot is the 14-inch laptop. Two main reasons for owning a gaming laptop are portability and value. These days gaming laptops are becoming more and more appealing with level of performance that continue to please gamers. What’s more to that is the fact that gaming laptops nowadays are a sure way to enter into the world of AAA gaming without breaking the bank that much. The price of dedicated GPU is still so high due to the shortage of chips around the world so owning a gaming laptop actually make a lot of sense as oppose to how expensive it is to building your own PC. Of course, gaming laptop cannot rival desktop gaming PC in terms of stability and performance, but the gap is not that much that would justify many people these days to spending more money to close the gap. However, it is also important to note that a gaming laptop does not give you a lot of options to upgrade the components in the future. The number one reason to own ASUS ROG G14 is its portability. The laptop and its power brick are still light enough to carry around in a backpack without hurting your back. The difference between my 16-inch gaming laptop and this ROG 14 is like night and day, my 16-inch gaming laptop and its power brick are already quite heavy to carry around not to mention when you need to toss an XBOX gaming pad and other peripherals in your bag. The laptop design is quite simple enough to pass as both gaming and business laptop. From the moment you open the packaging box of an Asus Zephyrus laptop, it will give you an instant impression that this is a great piece of hardware. However, it is important to note that this particular model does not come with built-in webcam. These days when a lot of meetings are being done online, it’s a hassle to toss an external webcam in the bag and connect it to your laptop every time you want to join these meetings. Also, if you are a gaming streamer, you should be mindful to free the necessary port for the webcam. This model does not come with Animematrix display but I do not find that feature as a necessity. ROG G14 sports a decent set of standard ports. As in the case of many PC gaming laptops, the RAM and SSD are all upgradeable. It also comes with a backlit keyboard as it is a standard feature in a gaming laptop. The model I’m reviewing comes with a combination of AMD chip and NVIDIA GPU. They’re good. This laptop can play any AAA games you throw it to. NVIDIA GPU allows you to play games in DLSS, which will increase the frame rate so your game will run smoother. I personally don’t have a problem having AMD chip with NVIDIA GPU unlike some people who prefers to have an all-AMD chip in order to get the complete set of AMD smart techs that will give a bit of performance advantage in a number of AAA titles. Comparably, NVIDIA DLSS gives better performance in some other AAA titles. The 144hz screen is bright enough and pleasing to the eye. This laptop is designed to play games at 1080 resolution and it should play any AAA title just fine and it should connect to external monitor just fine as well. The performance will not disappoint you unless you are into competitive gaming that demands very very high frame rate. Any serious competitive player will choose desktop with gaming monitor over laptop anyway in that case. I actually own a 2020 G14 model that comes with RTX 2060 and this particular model with RTX 3060 gives you upgrade in terms of performance. Sound performance is much better than the majority of other laptops out there, gaming or not. Asus even throws in free spatial audio program for your enjoyment so you can use gaming headset and listen to simulated surround audio. Music plays more than decent although bass performance could always be better. Audio is loud enough that you don’t really need to connect to external speakers. Before you play any AAA game, always run updates for your laptop. One small tip, I find that it’s better to automatically update the video driver of your laptop rather than installing updates manually. Although NVIDIA website might have the newest drivers out there, it may not have been thoroughly tested by Asus that you’re running the risk of hitting the battery performance of the laptop. Asus made claim of battery life based on the drivers they tested the hardware with so future updates always present some risk especially if you run updates manually not though windows update or Asus app. Although this laptop can be charged by using a compact 60w USB-C adapter connected to the USB-C port, you do not want to play games this way. The dedicated GPU needs enough power being supplied from the Asus power brick that comes with the laptop. Also, these days 512GB of SSD storage feels so little. It should come with at least 1 TB of SSD storage. Half TB will get your storage filled pretty quickly when you install AAA games and store some media. But this should not be a big deal if you enjoy playing games one or two titles at a time. So how does this laptop make sense as a gaming gear? Well, ASUS ROG G14 series is the laptop to own if you want to maximize on the portability factor and this particular model gives you good value and performance. It may not be an ideal double agent as a business laptop due to its lack of dedicated webcam and you will at some point in time need to upgrade the SSD but generally speaking this is still a great laptop. If you can afford to get a higher spec G14 laptop, I’d say go for that one instead of this particular model.

Decent laptop with multi tasking functionality, a 144 hz display, and modern hardware. The pre installed programs clash, the laptop requires a fair bit of recalibration out when factory new (display is too red out the box, the laptop doesnt come with 144 hz enabled), and not all the required drivers are installed (i and many others had an issue with the volume up button not working). Otherwise, it’s a decent portable option that is worth considered on sale.

This is an excellent laptop for the price I got it for ($900). It's fast, powerful, and seems to be built exceptionally well. I use this laptop for college, gaming, and CAD. When doing light tasks such as web browsing, I get 10+ hours of battery life. My only complaint is that this model does not come in black.
