Customers are delighted by the ROG Zephyrus 14" gaming laptop's impressive performance, long battery life, and portable design. Many appreciate its lightweight nature and the vibrant display, although some users note that the device can get warm under heavy use and that the fan can be noisy at times. The lack of a built-in webcam and limited storage are also frequently cited drawbacks. Overall, the laptop receives positive feedback for its combination of power and portability, despite some minor issues.

Pros Solid build with internal magnesium-aluminum 144Mhz screen Reasonably bright screen at 300nits Fingerprint scanner works from cold boot Light and compact for a gaming notebook Good sound quality Good keyboard and trackpad Auto switching performance profiles for each game SSD and memory can be upgraded Decent SSD speeds Quiet even in Turbo mode Subdued gamer styling Decent battery life Cons Only supports PCIE Gen 3x4 No mention of MUX switch Occasional screen flicker No webcam Speakers could be louder 512GB fills up fast with games Half the memory is soldered in Bottom screen bezel pops out causing backlight bleed Some keys get uncomfortably hot when gaming Inconsistent keyboard backlight Wi-Fi periodically crashes and shows no networking restart Fingerprint scanner usually takes multiple attempts Design and Features The Asus Zephyrus G14 is a full-fledged gaming notebook in a chassis you would expect to see for a standard notebook. The white and silver design is subdued enough for work or school use but still has a gamer style. Being a more affordable system, the outer shell is all plastic but by no means flimsy. Internally, the structure is a combination of magnesium and aluminum. It’s no surprise that Asus chose the 60W variant of the RTX3060 as heat is already a challenge in such a small chassis. Some reviews of the previous generation stated the FHD model had a 60Hz screen. Thankfully, this version has a 144Hz refresh rate. Comparing specs this does appear to be the exact same 2021 model otherwise. In fact, when searching the Asus website for more information, the only model that comes up is the original Ryzen 9 model. Occasionally, the screen frame seems to pop off slightly at the bottom sometimes creating backlight bleed. Thankfully the issue is easily corrected by pressing the frame back on until it clicks back in place. It seems to happen at some point between opening and closing the screen and not all the time. A subtle design element on the screen is the integrated stand. When you open the notebook the sides of the screen lift the back of the notebook off the surface allowing it to breathe better. Of course, this feature wouldn’t work if you tried to use it in your lap, but it is only needed when gaming. Considering how hot the system gets during gaming, you wouldn’t to try this anyway. The SSD is upgradable but is limited to PCIE Gen 3x4 so you aren’t going to get any speed improvements installing a shiny new NVME Gen 4 SSD. Memory is dual channel, but only one channel can be upgraded as the other half is soldered directly to the board. The right side of the system has two USB-A plugs and a single USB-C. The left side has the power adapter, HDMI, a headphone jack, and a single USB-C plug which supports charging the system but not fast enough if you are gaming. According to the manual, the HDMI port is 2.0b. The included barrel style power adapter has a right angle to allow routing to the back and out of your way. Above the function keys are a volume up, volume down, mic mute, and Armory Crate button. Considering the screen is manual brightness, dedicated screen brightness buttons would have been a nice touch. On the software side, bloat is limited. The regular apps for the integrated graphics and discrete graphics are included and the only thing Asus adds are the apps called MyAsus and Armory Crate. My Asus is related to warranty, diagnostics, and recovery while Amory Crate is mainly related to performance profiles and a membership where you can get game discounts. Usage and Performance The keyboard is backlit, white with 3 brightness levels. The backlit has some uniformity issues but doesn’t seem to exhibit the readability problems people complained about on the previous generation. The keys have good travel with a distinct activation point but they do tend to wobble. If you press the key from any corner, you can feel the distinct bump where the key should activate but nothing happens. In fact, you can bottom out the corner of any key without activating it. Thankfully, during normal usage the system does register key presses reliably. The trackpad isn’t listed as a precision touchpad but feels as accurate as one. The only thing that takes away from the feeling of quality is that if you tap on it to click sometimes it rattles slightly. The power button has a nice feature that when you press it to turn the system on it checks your fingerprint and caches it. Once the OS boots, the button passes the cached fingerprint to log you in without the need to scan your finger again. While handy, it is a bit finicky and works about every 3rd try. Hopefully there is a software tweak Asus can use to improve it but holding your finger on the button a little longer helps it work closer to half the time. You can launch Armory Crate via a dedicated button. It would have been nice if it allowed you to cycle through your configured performance profiles without opening the app. However, depending on your preference for automatic or manual control this might not even be an issue. The reason is Armory Crate scans for installed apps and games so you to create automatic performance profiles, called Scenario Profiles, for AC and Battery power that switch automatically based on what app is launched. For example, you can configure it to launch with the discrete graphics in Turbo mode for something like Shadow of the Tomb Raider on AC power and or only integrated graphics when on battery. You can then create another for general web browsing that turns off discrete graphics and runs the system on silent mode. Each profile can be linked to multiple games and apps. What is not included Scenario Profiles are the GPU Power Saving options. It is listed separately under devices and MsHybrid. It’s strange because MsHybrid suggests it has a software-based MUX switch, but while writing this review there was no mention of this exact model having a MUX switch. It would be a nice bonus if it has one and Asus forgot explicitly mention it, but overall specs are hard to determine with so many skus with minor differences and generic manuals. Regardless of it has a MUX switch, performance was very good all things considered. Running the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Benchmark on Ultra yielded average 86fps without evening enabling DLSS. Forza Horizon 5 returned a respectable average of 66fps on Ultra. These tests were un on Turbo mode plugged to show the maximum performance with the RTX3060 running at 80 watts. SSD performance is good for the class returning a max speed of 3030Mb/s Read and 1653Mb/s write on Crystaldiskmark. ATTO maxed out at 2.77GB/s read and 1.54GB/s write testing a file size of 256MB. Having this all crammed into a small chassis has one noticeable downside in the form of heat. Its no surprise Asus specifically built a kickstand to allow airflow from the bottom. Heat is an expected downsize of gaming laptops and this is no exception. Temps on the bottom of the chassis running around 130F. What was more of a surprise was the temps of the top deck. Using a thermal gun, there were parts of the keyboard area running at 120F. This can make extended gaming a bit uncomfortable as was evident running the initial training in Tomb Raider. The W key became hot enough to where it felt a little uncomfortable to keep pressing. Thankfully, it’s not enough to burn you and most of the time your fingers will be moving around mostly negating the issue. A work around for this is that you can switch to the Performance Profile to drop temps a bit. All things considered it’s not a big deal, but it is still good to know. While this may be a small downside, the fan noise is a pleasant upside. On Turbo mode there is no getting around it, you are going to hear the fans. The good thing is that even on max the fan noise is not very significant and is a very neutral air movement sound without any unpleasable bearing whine sounds. Also, unlike some systems the speakers still get loud enough to play using the built-in speakers with the fans running full speed and hear the gameplay just fine. They aren’t as loud as some but overall sound quality for the size is very good. Final Thoughts Asus did a respectable job balancing making a high quality, affordable gaming notebook with the G14. Even though this is a middle of the road gaming laptop, it doesn’t feel like you are getting something with any major sacrifices. If you are in the market for a gaming notebook that can play any game you want while still getting work done without being out of place for either, the Zephyrus G14 warrants serious consideration.

Overall phenomenal laptop with highly specked out parts. The screen is good for 144hz, the battery is pretty good too, the keyboard is nice to click but to the touch it feels honestly subpar. The machine does get hot for highly intensive work, but it’s a laptop so what did you expect. I would recommend using a external keyboard which will make the experience 1000x better. But for normal use it’s phenomenal. 512gb is more than enough unless you need more then at that point just get a desktop.

I got it on discount so of course I’m only going to say really good things about it because I spent $1000 for a monster laptop 14” that has a ryzen 7 and 3060 on top of having great battery life it’s honestly such a steal for something of this caliber. The only downside is that you can’t add another ssd stick because there’s only one slot so I’m probably going to just buy an external hard drive and this model doesn’t support anime matrix but the upsides far overweigh the downsides. It also doesn’t give off the cheap gamer look that a lot of laptops have.

Generally good and powerful computer, can run modern graphic games and has a good screen resolutions. My only real issue is the battery life (though may not be a problem for most people) which goes out after about 3-4 hours of playing, other than that theres simple graphical issues as well as a hardware issue from shipping, its a generally good computer especially for some on a budget.

----- SUMMARY ----- Verdict: With its superb gaming performance, long battery life, and great portability, the ROG Zephyrus G14 stands out from the competition. If you want serious gaming power but are also looking for portability and long battery life, then the ROG Zephyrus G14 is the laptop to get. Pros: - Superb gaming performance - Colorful, bright, and responsive display - Sleek and portable - Visually striking design - Excellent keyboard - Great battery life for a gaming laptop Cons: - No webcam ----- DETAILS ----- Setup: The unboxing experience of the ROG Zephyrus G14 is a highlight in itself. When opening the box, the laptop raises up towards you. You immediately see the white lid with its grid of tiny holes that have a material beneath that shimmers in the light. It’s a striking laptop, and ASUS went above and beyond to showcase that from the moment you unbox it. Once powered on, the Windows 11 guided setup is simple. Most steps are quick but there were some required updates, so it took me around 45 minutes to complete the setup. Design: I quickly noticed the sleekness and portability of the ROG Zephyrus G14. A lot of the gaming laptops I’ve seen with similar performance are large, bulky, and heavy. That’s not the case here. One significant benefit of the thin and light design is that it makes this laptop a great multipurpose driver. I love to game, but I also need a laptop that’s portable. I really like that the ROG Zephyrus G14 doesn’t make me compromise on either. When I need to be productive or simply use it as my daily driver, the keyboard and trackpad make it an enjoyable experience. The ROG Zephyrus G14 has the best keyboard I’ve used on a laptop. Typing feels comfortable, and the keys are backlit. It is also quiet. Opening the laptop’s lid angles the keyboard slightly towards you which adds to the comfort. I especially appreciate the dedicated keys for volume, microphone mute, and ROG Armoury Crate for easy access above the keyboard. Also above the keyboard is the power button which doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The trackpad is large and responsive. I don’t find myself running out of room when I’m scrolling, and it’s easy to click. If I stopped here, I’d give the design five stars, but what this ROG Zephyrus G14 lacks is a webcam. You can use a feature in “Link to MyASUS” called “Shared Cam” to link your phone and use it as a webcam, but the extra steps are a bit of a nuisance, and I noticed some lag. When it comes to ports, you get two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports (one of which has DisplayPort video-out functionality), one HDMI video output, a headset jack, and the power connector. I was happy to see that the sleek design didn’t compromise the ports that are offered. The missing webcam aside, it’s hard to find any flaws in this beautifully designed laptop. Gaming Performance: I won’t bore you with a bunch of benchmark test results. If you’re into that, there are plenty of other reviews online that can be referenced. What I’ll say is that I’ve had a phenomenal gaming experience playing a variety of games, and the frame rates are consistently high. Like other games I’ve tried on the ROG Zephyrus G14, my favorite game to play right now (Halo Infinite) performs at high frame rates with no lag. I was able to pair my Xbox controller to the laptop easily, and it’s been responsive with no lag or connection issues. I don’t do photo/video editing or other performance-intensive tasks, but I bet this laptop could handle just about anything you throw at it. The power that’s packed into this sleek laptop is impressive. Display: The Full-HD 144Hz display is colorful, bright, immersive, and responsive. Games I’ve been playing for years have been given new life on this display. Color accuracy and clarity are also top-notch. Experiencing the gorgeous display along with the high refresh rate is a real treat. Speakers: The audio output by the speakers on the ROG Zephyrus G14 is surprisingly good. For such a sleek laptop, I didn’t expect much, and those expectations were blown away. The laptop has a four-speaker system with 2 tweeters that direct sound towards you and 2 woofers that bounce sound off the table/desk. The audio is clear, and I was impressed with the bass and forceful percussion. The preinstalled Dolby Access app allows you to tune the audio, and there are a number of presets available for music, movies, games, and voice. Battery Life: For casual everyday use (browsing, emails, video/music streaming, etc.), I average over 8 hours of battery life, which is great for a gaming laptop. You can get even more with battery optimization methods like turning Battery Saver on and lowering the screen brightness. Gaming on battery power usually lasts around 2 hours. That’s a significant difference compared to casual use, but I’m usually plugged into power when I’m gaming anyway, so it’s not a con and is to be expected, in my opinion. Compared to other gaming laptops, the battery life on the ROG Zephyrus G14 is hard to beat. ----- WHAT’S IN THE BOX ----- 1 x Laptop 1 x Power Adapter 1 x Informational Papers

Purchased for performance and portability, It does both very well. Premium build quality, I can trust that when I put it in my backpack and go somewhere it won't be broken when I take it out. Panel looks beautiful, gets very bright, and very dark with very easy button switching between modes. The storage is enough for light use, but it's very easily upgradable for cheap. Asus hit the mark on this laptop.
