Customers are impressed with the ROG Zephyrus 14" Gaming Laptop's performance, graphics capabilities, and long battery life. Many appreciate its compact size, portability, and lightweight design, making it ideal for those on the go. However, some users note that the device can get warm and produce noticeable fan noise during use. The lack of a webcam and some concerns about the keyboard backlight are also mentioned.

Frustrated and Stuck (Literally)

The laptop no longer boots up after 2 months of a pleasing experience, which is quite a shame. Last night, i has the screen go gray and freeze, and I attempted to restart the computer. The power LED does light up and it charges normally, but there is no sign of the monitor or an external monitor working. I’m extremely upset due to this is the only decent computer I have around and I trusted that this computer could carry me on for a while... This will probably take a while to fix from ASUS or Best Buy so I am stuck at a predicament...

Asus has to be messing with me at this point. Screen bleed on a whole different model of laptop. Just goes to show their quality control is terrible on ALL their laptops. Screen bleed in the Zephyrus G15 and now the G14 is even worse. I have the model with a 2060 in it and it has no screen bleed. I'll include pictures to show how Asus products are going to be hit or miss. You might have to pay a little more for another brand, but at least it will not come defective out of the box.
I am sure most of these have terrible screen bleed, but no one is playing dark games. Go to Youtube and "black screen 4k". You will notice light leaking out from the sides of the screen.
Photo 1 shows how it bleeds through when playing a game.
Photo 2 is just a black screen so you can see it come from all sides
Photo 3 is it compared to last years G14 with a 2060 in it....downhill.

This is a brilliant machine!

It’s small and light, it’s fast, it’s got great battery life, AND it can easily handle modern AAA games at high settings at 1080p – all listed in order of importance for me. If these features are important to you, then I whole heartedly recommend it. It has been a great little machine so far for the 3 weeks I’ve used it!
Things I really like:
- The size! Oh I love how small and light this little guy is. Carrying it around is a breeze and no hinderance at all.
- The look! I love the general aesthetics of the laptop. It’s built well and has a, dare I say, sexy design to it. I like the light grey with the white quite a bit. Definitely not super “gamery” looking, but also sleek enough to stand out. It’s not a fingerprint magnet as well, which I always appreciate with my tech.
- The performance! This thing flies! The 5900hs really has no problem at all with most anything I’ve used the laptop for. It’s fast. Very fast. It’s so fast in fact, the laptop will get hot and the fans will kick in very often with stock settings. So I disabled the CPU’s aggressive boost setting, which has GREATLY reduced heat and noise output. I recommend doing the same, especially if you’re primarily using it to game and don’t require the CPU to constantly boost. This allows the 3060 to run cooler as a result, so win-win.
- The battery! So I can easily get 10 hours on this guy, however, this took a bit of tweaking to get it to that point. Disabling the CPU’s aggressive boost setting is very important as well as manually adjusting when the discrete GPU (the 3060) is being used. Essentially you want the integrated GPU (Radeon RX Vega 8) to be used entirely when doing anything that doesn’t involve gaming, and then when you want to game, the 3060 will automatically be used. This moved my initially battery time from 6-7 hours to over 10.
Things that are good, but expected:
- The 1TB M.2 is fast and performs exactly as it should. I think 1tb is a good amount of storage, but if do want to upgrade you’ll have to replace it. There isn’t another open M.2 spot.
- The 16gb RAM at 3200mhz performs well. Again, nothing exciting or extraordinary. I believe one 8gb stick is soldered on and you can change out the other one. I’ve read that 24gb is the maximum, but I am unsure.
- The screen. It looks nice enough and has good color. The fact that it is 144hz is very nice, but I am mostly using this laptop while it is running on battery, so it is mostly at 60hz.
- Price. I don’t think this laptop is a steal at $1500 by any means, but I do feel like it is at a good, competitive price. You are primarily buying this thing for its CPU power, its small size, and its large battery. There are much faster gaming laptops at this price point.
What I need to get used to:
- The IO is good enough, but I would have really liked an ethernet port and another USB A port on the left hand side. Small complaint, but it would have been nice. The design of the laptop means that no ports could have been place on the back of the laptop, and because there are exhaust vents are on each side, the ports are awkwardly pushed up towards the front.

This is an amazing gaming laptop hands down. It combines excellent build quality, all-metal chassis, with amazing performance all in a sleek 14-inch form factor. The laptop features one of the best Ryzen laptop CPUs on the market as well as a very recent and powerful Rtx 3060 rated at 60w( Boost up to 80w) in order to provide good thermal performance and gaming. Not only does the laptop excel at gaming it features several features allowing it to be used as a work or school laptop. Featuring an embedded fingerprint sensor that is pretty accurate and has an impressive 10 hour battery life. While you may not get exactly the performance of a beefy heavy laptop with a 3080, it holds its own very well considering it only weighs 3 and a half pounds making it very lightweight and portable. It has very good thermals for a laptop and by adjusting the settings, mainly turning off the CPU boost which isn't always needed since the CPU is already very good and most games are GPU bottlenecked nowadays, nets it around a 10-15 degree difference and runs in the 70-75 degree range in normal gaming. Overall the laptop has a nice quality smooth trackpad and a good keyboard feel with nice stiff keypresses which make the keyboard feel much more responsive. The last few features include is it has an excellent display. with 100% Srgb coverage and an FHD 144hz screen with lower response times than the 2020 model, it makes gaming feel very smooth. It additionally has some of the best speakers I've ever heard in a laptop rivaling MacBook quality with much smaller speakers. It has two upward-firing speakers on the chassis deck for mid to high range with two downward-firing for the low end. It has excellent clarity and is very usable. I would only note one interesting con to the laptop. While it does not have a webcam it does have a microphone array near the top. So if you are the type of person who has many virtual meetings with your camera ON I would suggest getting a small portable webcam, however, if you usually keep your camera off in meetings like zoom and google meets this laptop may work for you because of the integrated mic. For me personally I hardly ever used my webcam even while my school was entirely virtual last year so it's not a huge deal to me. It is good to know in case you need to buy an external cam though. In the end, I would still give the G14 a 5/5 since its amazing build quality battery life screen and performance are simply amazing for a laptop at this price point and size.

Amazing Portable Gaming laptop

I was looking for a gaming laptop with a small form factor. My initial picks were the ROG G14 and the Razer Stealth 13.
This is my first attempt at PC gaming and this laptop blows the competition away. It is extremely light for its performance. The build quality is superb with an Aluminum/Mg Alloy body. The moonlight white color looks amazing except that I think the holes on the back of the display will eventually accumulate dust/dirt. I am thinking of getting a transparent skin to cover up the hole pattern.
The keypad is very comfortable (smooth and silent) to type and the keys are very responsive. The layout is very easy to get used to. Power button alternates a fingerprint scanner. It is not the fastest and the most accurate but does its job. Asus somehow chose to use a white backlight for the keys. Even in darker lighting situations, it is easier to read the keys with the backlight completely turned off. I also felt the arrow keys are a bit smaller to my liking.
The display is decently bright in most situations. It is not like the 500nits of an XPS 13 but does good in most lighting situations. For a 14 incher, the 1080p is decent and you don't notice any the difference. The 144Hz display is pretty good for gaming. I did notice a bit of backlight bleed in the bottom right corner of my panel but it is something I am okay with. I have seen displays that are way worse on more expensive laptops. There is no webcam but I don't really need a webcam on my gaming PC.
The speakers are great with good stereo separation. I think, for a laptop this size, Asus crammed a lot of decent hardware into such a small package.
The next best thing about this laptop is the combination of an AMD Ryzen 9 Series 5900HS processor and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX3060 GPU. I have tried a bunch of games since I got this laptop and I have never noticed the temps climbing above 75C, which seems an amazing achievement in such a small form factor. This laptop comes with 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 8G of which is soldered on the motherboard and another 8G in a SODIMM slot. I would like to upgrade the RAM at a later point, but right out of the box, I don't see any reason to. It has never crossed more than 40% utilization with what I do. The 1TB drive is amazingly fast with sequential read speeds of ~2082 MB/s, write speeds at 1845 MB/s. Sustained write speeds clocked at 1564 MB/s.
I am sure I have not used this laptop to its full potential, but I have no doubt this laptop will handle everything I throw at it with ease. If anybody is looking for a portable gaming laptop, I would recommend this laptop, hands down.

This laptop is great but it started to not detect the RTX 3060. I cant even play anything on it now and I have tried downloading the Nvidia drivers but that did nothing. I only got it like 3 weeks ago and I think I want to return this if this doesn't start working. I keep getting an error code 45 on the device manager but every time I update the drivers for the GPU, it says the 3060 drivers are up to date.

While this laptop is very nice and very portable, it isn't perfect as it certainly has compromises you might not want to live with.
The Drive is a 1 TB NVME SSD, that can read at 3.5 Gigs per second and write at 1.7 Gigs per second, so it isn't slow for sure. The downside here is that you only get 1 NVME slot and no other slots for storage.
The RAM is running at DDR4 3.2 GHz and CPU-Z ROG Edition reports it is CL 22, so that's not all that great. Unfortunately, you might not be able to make this much better as half the RAM is soldered to the Motherboard. Apparently, ASUS decided to abandon their dual slot approach to RAM Upgrades.
The APU is a 5900HX 35 Watt edition, so there's room to boost that for sure. The iGPU is the Radeon Vega 8 (I believe it is 8 cores, you might want to verify that) and it's about what you expect from an integrated GPU. CPU-Z puts the Single-Core performance at 613 and the Multicore at 6036. These numbers are when the laptop is plugged in, when it is running on battery the single-core was cut in half and the multicore was about 4000.
The discrete GPU is an Nvidia RTX 3060 with 6 Gigs of RAM and it does a decent job with gaming. Many of the games I've played are running at or above 100 FPS, so the 144Hz screen is not wasted on this laptop.
The Display has a peak refresh rate of 144Hz and that's very good for gaming. On top of that, it is a very bright screen that covers 100% of the sRGB Color Gamut. It is by no means a bad display, but knowing that the non-BestBuy versions of this machine come with a QHD screen that runs at 144 Hz, there is a little bit of a disappointment there.
The lighter color of the case is a blessing, as all of the darker cases from Asus are serious fingerprint magnets. This thing never shows a single fingerprint and it looks really clean. Whoever chose the monochromatic theme did a great job here.
Battery life in iGPU mode is roughly 9 hours. Running the laptop on battery with the dGPU gets you about 3 hours while gaming.
IO Ports are fairly decent but not really top of the line. You have 2 USB 3 ports, 2 USB-C ports, an HDMI Port, and a Headphone Jack. What you're missing are an Ethernet port and a Thunderbolt 3 port. This means you'll need a USB-C dock to get gigabit ethernet and you'll want that if you're going to be gaming competitively.
Overall I find the laptop is very good if you can get it in the $1300 range, but for $1500 I'm likely to look elsewhere without the compromises. If you don't need gaming, I would recommend the new M1 MacBook Pro with a larger storage option at $1500.
Pros -
Good Build Quality
2nd fastest mobile CPU on the market
Great performance for $1300 / Good for $1500
Good Battery Life in iGPU Mode
1 TB M.2 NVME SSD
Plenty of IO ports
Cons -
Half the RAM is soldered to the board
Only one drive slot
No Ethernet built-in
Poor power cord placement
No Thunderbolt 3 ports
Again, if you want a laptop and don't care about gaming, go for the M1 MacBook Pro. If you care about gaming this is a decent option for mobile users. However, I only gave this 4 stars, because of the price I paid for it (On sale for $1349).

Solidly built and very well balanced.
GPU benchmarks are about 10-15% higher than a Max-P 2060 laptop with the built in overclock options. The 1080p screen is the right pairing with the capability offered.
CPU benchmarks are off the chart; the Ryzen 9 will last years. The integrated GPU in the Ryzen is actually capable of handling light gaming on it's on.
If you're looking for an ultraportable laptop that play games and get work done, this is it.
Pros:
RTX 3060 Max-Q GPU - efficient and powerful enough for today's games.
Ryzen 9 CPU is top of the line
Fingerprint reader on the power button
Excellent keyboard
Very small and light
Good speakers
Good cooling, temps stay below 50 C most of the time
Large 1TB SSD
16 GB Ram
Cons
RTX 3060 MaxQ is a gimped version of the 3060 to keep temperature low.
Only 2 USB A ports and 2 USB Cs.
Power cord connects at odd angle on the side
No number pad
8GB of the RAM is soldered to the MB
No Webcam

I'm looking for a computer primarily for work - programming / Android app development, and portability is a big factor for me. I'd like to occasionally game on it as well. The G14 seems like a good fit so I'm trying it out and so far I'm really impressed.
The new Ryzen CPU's are really fast and chug through my work flows easily. The 8 GB of soldered ram is a concern since you lose dual channel support if you upgrade above 16GB, but I'm not sure if that is a deal breaker yet. For most users this isn't an issue.
I also had reservations because I wanted to get the QHD screen model (1440p) but there doesn't seem to be any in stock anywhere. The FHD model here (1080p) looks pretty good and works fine for me. I'd like to get more vertical pixels for code, but I am not sure if I'd get usable vertical space with the QHD model since I would have to bump scaling up on that - it may actually lose vertical space. Plus, if I keep this, I'll be dual booting linux and linux is notorious bad for scaling support.
When looking at the FHD screen closely things aren't quite as sharp as I'd like, but that isn't really noticeable when sitting back and working. I feel the FHD screen may be a good fit after all.
This machine does run hot for games. A bit hotter than I'd like TBH. There are some controls to reduce the wattage used for the CPU/GPU and things like that - i'm still experimenting with those controls (they are not well documented), but I've been able to see some improvements heat wise.
The keyboard on this feels great. The trackpad is very good. The keyboard back-lighting is awful and makes it hard to actually see the keys (especially the function keys which I don't have memorized). Unless it is very dark in the room it is best to keep the back-lighting off.
This machine has a silent mode, and it is actually silent. Crazy how quiet this machine can be when doing light stuff.
Battery life seems very good so far, but I haven't been able to test that fully.
Speakers are pretty good. Was hoping for a bit more bass response but otherwise they seem to get loud and are clear.
I've had pretty good luck with the fingerprint ready.
I really don't like where the power brick plugs in to this machine (on the side).
There wasn't any bloatware pre-installed on this machine when I received it.
Overall This is a very powerful portable machine. It is perfect for someone that needs a portable machine that has some gaming chops. If you intend to game heavily something larger may suite you better, like the G15 (larger model of this machie). Or if you don't need something portable at all, the Asus Strix series may fit the bill.

Zephyrus G14 is a great ultra portable beast packed with a Ryzen 9 5900HS and an RTX 3060 (60-80W).
Pros -
1. desktop level performance
2. great display with 144Hz refresh rate (one downside - ghosting exists due to low response time (20-30ms))
3. great keyboard and glass touchpad ( really loved it ).
4. excellent build quality - chassis made of magnesium and laptop is very sturdy
5. battery life - getting about 12 hours for productivity tasks, web surfing, etc. 10 hours of video streaming.
Cons
1. RAM is partly soldered
2. Only 1 NVME slot
3. No webcam (good news from CES 2022 - next G14 will be equipped with a webcam)
4. Fan noise - fan can be turned off when machine is on battery. But there will be some noise when plugged in (RPM can be reduced through Armoury Crate at the cost of high temperature)
5. Temperature - like in any gaming laptops, temperatures can be very high (95C for CPU, 85C for GPU during gaming). After turning off boost via registry, temperatures were like 85C for CPU and 75C for GPU.
Overall, it is a great machine with ultra portability. However, due to limited upgradeability (soldered RAM, 1 NVME slot) and lack of a webcam, I had to return this product.

I needed a portable laptop to replace my behemoth 17" desktop replacement from 2011. I wanted something that was small, light, and be able to play games such as D3, Grim Dawn, and whatever else new I find on Steam. This 14" bad boy ticks all these boxes. The AMD 5900 processor is fast, and the RTX 3060 provides plenty of muscle for these older games. Oh and I do lots of homework and the screen may be small, but I can still read text and type in MS Word with no issues. The screen also does well outside during the day (not in direct sunlight obviously) and gets decent battery life when not gaming. I leave it plugged in while gaming. The keyboard and pad are great. I have found no issues while typing on it, and I don't accidentally hit the pad that makes the cursor do whatever.
The only negatives that I can find that there are only two USB type A ports so if you use an external webcam (cause there ain't one built in), that leaves only one USB port. I also don't like how the charging cable plugs into the left side of the computer, a minor annoyance that doesn't detract from the total package.
Best Buy also incorrectly states that there is a built in media card reader. There is not!

I usually don't write reviews but for what it's worth, I'll share my experience. First and foremost, I did purchase this laptop open-box in excellent (certified) condition while it was on sale. I purchased the laptop as a gaming laptop upgrade and for school purposes. The 14 inch screen and smaller build compared to my 15.6 inch ASUS ROG Strix Hero Edition with an 8th Gen i5 and 1050 Ti is like a breath of fresh air.
The thermals from this 2021 model compared to the 2020 model is a lot better. But, even on idle or silent, the laptop can get a little warm. The fan noises are good, but it definitely can get very loud depending on what you're doing. It can get to upwards of 50db if you're using Turbo mode while gaming. If you don't mind, then it won't be a problem. The center of the keyboard can get very warm or hot if you're gaming for a long time. The right and left side of the keyboard manage to stay a little cooler only because the fans are on each side. Although there are a lot of cons, for as small and compact this laptop is, the thermals are as good as they can get right now.
Right off the bat, some people are lucky enough to just set their G14 to half brightness, no backlit keyboard, and turning on battery saver, and they would get 8-11 hours of battery life. On my end, I had to update drivers, and adjust a lot of settings in order to get at least 8-11 hours. On average without plugging it in, I get close to 10 hours with watching videos and browsing, which is amazing for a gaming laptop.
The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS and the RTX 3060 with a 1080p 144hz display perform amazing. With the processor and graphics card, editing, photoshop, and playing AAA games are a breeze, making it great for both gaming and productivity.
As for the build quality, personally using ASUS for the last few years, I've been used to typing on the keyboards. The keyboard is great, there's good travel distance and it's responsive. The backlighting however can be very uneven. In any kind of lighting, I suggest you turn off the backlighting unless you really need to turn it on. The screen is bright, it can get up to 330 nits and is great in color. I haven't really had an issues with ghosting while gaming. There isn't a lot of flex to anything, if there is, it's minimal. The only real downside is no camera, but you can always use another device or get a webcam for things like zoom calls. There's a variety of ports, you get more here compared to other 14 inch laptops. The USB C however does not support thunderbolt because AMD has not yet configured that.
Internally, the downside is only being able to expand one RAM slot and losing that dual channel aspect. If you're someone who doesn't need anything more than 16gb of RAM, upgrading wouldn't be an amazing idea. You can expand the storage if you aren't satisfied with the 1TB SSD you get. I did have an issue with my Wi-Fi adapter and it may still be having issues now and in the future, but it could possible just be my internet provider or router.
Overall, I think that for what the price is, it's definitely a steal. With what you're getting and how great the quality is, I doubt you'll regret the purchase. If you have more money than what this costs, look to see what more you could invest in. Other than that, the G14 is a good choice. This laptop is portable, being slim and small, outputting so much power. If you're unsure, I'd watch and read reviews.

do NOT buy an "Open-Box Excellent - Certified" laptop. I'm having serious issues with the screen (not showing any image) on an awesome laptop.
Really disappointed with the "certification" from Best Buy. Sadly, i'm not in the US so I can't return it.

Being a hybrid desktop/laptop user, I've come to expect much lower performance on this than on my workstation.
I was wrong.
First things first, the build quality is a massive feat. It is incredibly light, and but rock solid, especially the hinge.
The 8 cores just blaze through any workload you put on it without breaking a sweat and thermals are well managed.
Battery life exceeded expectations and I'm happy it doesnt have a built in webcam (those usually suck, I buy my own anyways).
10/10 recommend. Only note is that I recommend to expand the RAM to 24GB (from the original 16) for content creators that like to multitask.

This is the best PC I've ever owned. I've built massive custom gaming machines for myself in the past, had other gaming laptops, had more powerful machines, etc. I'm a well versed gamer and computer afficionado.
Pro:
-Price point for the power in this machine is second to none.
-It can run nearly all AAA games (on the laptop screen) at max settings without a hitch
-Portability is amazing, as the device is VERY thin for what is packed into this thing
-Sleek, clean look. Not noticeably a gaming device like some others out there
Con:
-Man, this thing can get HOT. Fellas, don't sit this thing on your lap under full load, or you will cook your n--s!
-No RGB, which wasn't a big deal for me, but is almost a standard for gaming rigs these days
-No camera
In summary, I will continue to purchase the ROG Ally for the foreseeable future every few cpu/gpu generations.

My laptop does not include a charger, and the battery charge does not last long, I am thinking of returning it, aesthetically it is very good, it is not damaged or anything, but a laptop does not work if a charger.
