Overheats causing it to fall apart!!

I bought this laptop excited to play games and enjoy it. Unfortunately it was a big mistake. This laptop overheats with most games I play. The screen frame is peeling apart from the screen, it gets so hot I can barely put my fingers on the keyboard. ITS FALLING APART! I have messed with the fan settings and have tried everything to stop it but it’s just not worth it anymore. Very unsatisfied, regret my decision on this laptop…

Great performance , bad build quality

Very fast laptop and I was happy with it for almost an year even it was running a hot but it was normal for such an thin machine. 11 months after I bought it the plastic on the bottom of the display began to unglue caused of the hot air coming from the fans (I guess). I calles asus and they said Best buy's geek squad will take care of the warranty. So the shipped my laptop out of state for repair only to bring it back it a failed attempt for to glue it up (as u can see on the second picture) . Laptop was erased even tho i told em specifically not to do it. Anyways i came back at best buy and they shipped it again for repair for another 2 weeks. Yesterday I got it back this time with replaced display. I went back home and noticed a scratch on the supposing new display which is irritating and noticed there is a ton of black light bleed in a dark room. Went back to best buy and they said its a cosmetic issue and cannot do anything about it. My Alienware R2 lasted 5 years no issues not sure if im unlucky this time or maybe this model has a bad build quality. Wouldn't recommend because even if runs well for this price it should be build well and mine is not. Also Best buy geek squad failed to fix it under warranty and now I have to satisfy with a damaged machine only a year after i bought it.

Too many problems with Best Buy Exclusive model

so the 3070 is very limited in this Best Buy Exclusive model. also the AniMe Matrix display (the 1,000 leds on the cover) yeah they DO NOT work with the Best Buy Exclusive model. i called asus thinking i had a faulty model immediately after i set it up and couldnt get Armoury Crate working right(asus software for THIS specific laptop) Asus support confirmed that best but has this laptop but they made changes to it and it well basically sucks. it runs some games alright and the screen is good witht he 165hz but windows has issues with the bloatware they installed but it runs about the same as my 7 year old asus gl502vy laptop with a 1070…. no joke at all. VERY disappointed in this laptop. i have purchased 11 asus, 4 msi, 2 origin, and 2 aorus gaming laptops over the past 10 years all for youtube reviews and professional work for video editing and this is my 100% absolute most disappointing purchase. cant wait to return it and get a better device. what a joke, no thanks best buy, baaaaaad deal if you try to uninstall armoury crate it will cause a problem with the software and require a complete reboot. you cannot create a backup media best buy stopped that from working in windows if you try to perform a complete wipe you will lose access to a majority of your system hardware and you cant use the network adapter without putting in drivers for it which you will need to get with another computer and then you can only use 1 of the usb ports as the others do not work after looking online there are 3 reports from other certified purchasers from best buy who have BRICKED their machines trying to perform a clean windows 10 install BAD DEAL BEST BUY BAAAAAD DEAL!!!

Screen issues after 5 days. Cleared up on its own after some time, but no longer trust the build quality. Unable to exchange due to stock issues, forced to return In general it was great until the screen went bad, no LCD bleed, great performance and thermals. No issues rendering videos in Premier. Disappointed the RAM is soldered though, speeds are reduced to single channel if you upgrade.

The potential of this laptop is amazing, but I got one of the models which as all the speaker issues you've read about - popping/blowing out anything that has bass (male voices on youtube are especially bad). Additionally, my unit had a lot of backlight bleed near the top of the display that I didn't have with my previous gaming laptop (on the left in the picture). The bleed wasn't a dealbreaker, but the combination of that and the speaker issue means I'll be returning this today.

It's unfortunate that a powerful laptop such as this has to fall victim to such poor QC considering the power you're getting out of such a small package is mindblowing. Having already received one replacement laptop from Best Buy as a result of a faulty space bar, my second laptop--which arrived right out of the box with a small but highly obviously scratch almost dead center in the middle of the screen--has already begun to have keyboard issues again, as the F-key dislodges from its clip at the slightest touch. Ridiculous for such an expensive piece of hardware. I've had no issues with it otherwise, but the poor QC means I just can't recommend anyone waste their money on it unless they're willing to buy into the exorbitant Geek Squad insurance, which I personally find to be ridiculous. I'm already debating sending it back for repair and it's not even 3 months old. What in the world?

I’m a frequent FPS gamer, so the ability to get my hands on a laptop with an RTX 3070 was pretty exciting. I currently run an Alienware R9 with a 144Hz display, so I was excited to keep the super refresh rate with this machine -- but even faster! TL;DR at the bottom if you just want the goods! Initial impressions & setup: The packaging is super cool. Lifting the lid of the case props up the rear of the laptop for ease of removal. Protective film wraps the laptop nice and your typical paper-thin foam sheet sits on the keyboard. Hidden compartments in the box hold paperwork and the power brick and brick-to-wall cable. A right-angle round power connector to the laptop is in play here, no USB-C Power Distribution. The look of this laptop is slick; opening the lid lifts the rear of the machine ever so slightly, which I find to be pretty cool. The screen is a matte finish, so glaring is minimal. When comparing the keyboard / base thickness while open, it’s a few mm thinner than a Logitech MX Keys keyboard. In looking at the instructions, they said to charge for 3 hours, so I didn’t boot up to see what percentage the battery was at, come delivery time. When plugging it in and closed, the charging status light on the rear of the laptop at the fan vents. After around an hour and a half, the light went from amber to white, indicating it was ready to go. When opened, the lights are above the F6/F7 keys - pretty cool. While only on battery, I ran through the initial setup and was left with 93% remaining. Once that was done, I followed that up with OS & graphics updates and ran it down to 69% after around another hour. Outside of that, I really didn’t pay too much attention to the battery life as putting a hefty load on any CPU or GPU will result in lost battery life. While setting up the laptop, I noticed that this is a fingerprint magnet and there’s no webcam! I guess that makes sense though - why put a crummy webcam “just to put one in” - especially if someone is going to stream. Streamers will have their own video setup & this is one less thing to worry about. Hardware & Asus Software: I bet others will run some hardware benchmarks, but that’s not my thing. From a usage perspective, the keyboard key presses are solid; not too deep and yet, not too shallow. There are physical buttons above the numbers 1-5 for audio control (volume up/down/mute) and to launch Armoury Crate software. The wide (roughly Alt to Alt) touchpad also has a nice feel and click, however I find myself on the “right-click” side more often than I am on where I want to be - the “left click.” The power button also doubles as the fingerprint reader. Honestly, it took me a while to find it and I didn’t see anything that told me it was the power button. It was turning and tilting the laptop to notice that there was no swipe bar and the only relatively flush button on the system, so I gave it a try. The ASUS Armoury Crate software provides a seemingly limitless number of customizations for the laptop. From noise [fan] level (turbo vs silent), to the color of the LED backlight on the keyboard, and whether the touchpad is enabled -- there is so much you can do. A companion App for your smartphone/tablet exists, that allows you to control the software & make changes without having to close the window you’re in. Example: You just dropped into Warzone and realize you’re still in “Silent” mode from earlier and are experiencing terrible performance; enable Turbo mode right from your phone and hear the fans spin up. Caveat: the software doesn’t remember your phone between reboots, so you have to scan a QR code the first time you use it after a power cycle, logout, etc. Networking: When it comes to the Wi-Fi AX card, I found it to be consistently inconsistent. I was closest to (but not on top of) an 802.11ax access point, but it didn’t select that one & went to a mesh ‘ac’ AP across the house. When I did get it to the ‘ax’ AP, I pulled around 200Mb/s out of my possible 240Mb/s on 5GHz via fast.com; not bad. When playing multiplayer games, I didn’t have any issues with any lag whatsoever, so … it works just fine. On a side note, I found that hard-wired connections take much longer than other systems to get a link & IP Address. When you’re trying to hard-wire in to get a 40GB update, it’s noticeable. Not a deal breaker, just odd. Modes / Heat / Fans: The Performance & Turbo modes tune away from Energy Saving and Noise reduction and put more cycles on CPU & GPU performance - and you can tell. Wow, can this thing get loud! I found a simple Warzone ‘waiting to deploy’ scene - to run just about 100% CPU & GPU and fans around 5000RPMs. When you’re on battery, the Turbo & Manual modes are not available, so they must be real battery hogs. I can feel the heat on my lap, through a piece of 1/2in mdf. Like with most laptops, direct lap contact for extended periods of time are bad, mmmmkay? Also, with the curve of the lip at the bottom of the screen which pivots the keyboard up a bit, redirects the fans and cooling upwards to the display. Strange. Gaming: I ran my Call of Duty Warzone & Cold War settings all at High / Ultra. When I moved over to Cyberpunk 2077, I was forced down to Medium settings. Anything above Medium makes Cyberpunk slow and choppy. Don’t get me wrong, the game is still crisp - but I guess I’m not shocked when it comes to that game. I played a few rounds on the laptop screen at 165Hz and thought it was time to go to a bigger screen. I took the HDMI out and put it to my Dell gaming monitor, but at 60Hz only. I normally use 144Hz and coming from 165Hz, the movement at 60Hz was glaringly messy and made it somewhat unenjoyable. I then tried on my 65in TV - which was a little better, but still lacking. By the end of the night, I went back to the R9 @ 144Hz. I don’t know if there’s something about super high refresh rates and touch screens, but I feel the screen will eventually be a fingerprint magnet, just like the body. Even after playing, the angle of the laptop is good and I didn’t have any discomfort in my wrist or hand. Battery Life: I really didn’t stress the laptop gaming while on battery; you’ll never get full performance so why would I want to do that? I had mentioned that under ‘normal’ usage I lost about 30% an hour. So, now that I’ve spelled out most of my memorable interactions with this … would I recommend it? Well, that depends. If you like to use a smaller screen or travel and want gaming portability, then sure! If you’re a desktop gamer used to 27-32in screens and have a spare $1700, then sure again! But in all seriousness, this laptop was great. TL;DR - I talk about these points above. Yay: Design Comfort Responsiveness Screen Fingerprint reader Customization software Thickness Nay: No webcam Battery Life (it’s a gaming laptop though) No touchscreen (refresh limitation?) Fingerprint smudging everywhere (lid, keyboard) Weird: WiFi inconsistent pick of Access Points Long link / DHCP time

    A Portable Powerhouse

I've tested and returned many gaming laptops over the past 6 months and this is by far my favorite. Asus really knocked it out of the park with this one. Highly recommended, especially if you can get it at the $1549 sale price. My other favorite was the Legion 5 Pro, but I've found that when you hook the Zephyrus G15 up to an external monitor through DisplayPort (this bypasses Nvidia Optimus), you can almost match (and sometimes surpass) the Legion 5 Pro's higher wattage GPU in performance. There unfortunately is no "perfect" gaming laptop, but this thing checks A LOT of boxes. First of all, it's actually portable (as I feel a laptop should be). It's surprisingly thin and light for having such high-end components, yet feels very sturdy still with the magnesium alloy body. Even the charging brick is a bit smaller than most gaming laptops and the cable is flexible. They definitely designed this thing with students in mind. It fits in a backpack easily and one-handed lifting is also easy. Next, the premium design features are much appreciated. The giant trackpad is the best I've ever used. The keyboard has basic RGB and feels amazing to type on. I'm a huge fan of centered keyboards and trackpads too. Speakers were unexpectedly great as well. I'd say probably the best I've heard besides Macbook speakers. Also the hinge design is very low-profile and the back of the lid has a cool reflective finish. And it's not a fingerprint magnet like Razer! Speaking of fingerprints, you also get a fingerprint sensor which can log you in as soon as you press the power button. The screen is great. About 350 nits of brightness which is plenty for me. Color accuracy is awesome. QHD looks beautiful and sharp. Fan noise is very manageable and you get custom fan curves. Silent mode actually runs silent, even when doing heavy tasks, which is much appreciated (great for classrooms/cafes!). The Armoury Crate software has some cool and unique features not found in other laptops. I especially enjoy the iGPU mode, which can automatically switch off the RTX 3070 when on battery power, granting you insanely good battery life without having to tweak anything (8 to 10+ hours). You also get control over fans, color settings, and some wattage/overclock settings. Gaming performance is fantastic. The GPU dynamically ranges around 80W-100W while the 8-core Ryzen 9 5900HS sores in CPU-bound tasks. You can toy with settings to adjust your performance. Manual mode can get you a TimeSpy score of over 10,000. Turbo mode gets you in the high 9,000s. This translates to pretty much being able to run any AAA game right now at high-ultra settings with great fps. Especially when DLSS is available. Temperatures are great but this can vary for each user. During heavy load, the liquid metal seems to do a great job at keeping the CPU within reasonable levels (yes it is ok for Ryzen CPUs to go over 90C) and GPU stays at a good temp under 79C. The "major" con of this laptop is that only one stick of RAM is swappable (side note: you can swap this stick for faster RAM and still get a performance boost). So you're stuck with 16GB, or you can upgrade to 24GB, or 40GB. And yes, when getting more RAM the first 16GB utilized will still run in dual channel, but when your CPU utilizes any more than that, it runs in single channel for the extra (some lost performance). 16GB does not bother me. It is plenty for AAA gaming, and I've edited 4k videos on it with no lagging or anything. The other weird con is the lack of a webcam. I will say that the Asus Link software works pretty well allowing you to use your iPhone or Android phone as your computer's webcam though. Conclusion: Asus somehow fit a ton of performance in a small, quiet, and very portable package without a ton of sacrifices. And that is just downright impressive. This thing packs a serious punch for gaming, productivity, school, or whatever you decide to throw at it.

      Dear Githuku,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're sorry to hear about the overheating issues you're experiencing with this model. There's a possibility that there are background apps and Windows updates causing the unit to perform as it does. What we've observed with the Windows 10 operating system is that once the unit is not being used all background and installed apps including Windows updates will fire up. We would recommend that you check for and install updates. This will cause the unit to run a bit hotter than normal and in turn ramp up the fan speed. We would recommend that the user check for and install all updates for all installed applications.
If the issue persist, we would recommend that you have this unit sent in for servicing.

Nothing about this order went well. Paid for expediated shipping, shipment didn't go out on time and was further delayed in transit. Laptop finally arrived, the E key is busted and keeps falling off. One of the complaints I heard before ordering is that the laptop can run hot, and that's true but the hottest spot is the area where the status lights are above the keys, so it's not a place that'd be touched normally anyway. I should have known better than expect much from Best Buy, but as a long-time Asus fan, I'm seriously disappointed in the quality of this thing based on my first impressions.

      Dear RichS,

We certainly understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused.

All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, the faulty E key is a random problem. Normally, ASUS provides one year warranty coverage, if product was purchased brand-new, in order to fix or repair any hardware or part that stop working prematurely under normal usage.

It is normal for the laptop to generate more heat than normal while under heavy load especially during gaming, WINDOWS Update and antivirus scan. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full-throttle. Please ensure the air ventilations are free from obstructions in order to have an efficient air flow for better heat dissipation. While gaming, please ensure no resource hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely speak the temperature. The heat or temperature does decreases or normalizes once system resource utilization goes down.

If you need further assistance, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help. Or, you are always welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent at: http://bit.ly/AsusLiveChat.

I used this laptop for video editing and playing age of empires 4. After 6 months of use the screen started to warp (I assume from heat). I used this laptop on a cooling pad (raised pad with metal grate) and operated it with the lid open. It performed great, but, I didn't want to risk the display issue getting worse so I returned it. Overall, fast machine, but build quality on this display is terrible.

Bought open-box. Returned in due to some backlight bleeding on the upper screen. I guess it is to be expected since it is an open-box. Bought a new one a week later, and it turns out to have more backlight bleeding on four corners of the screen. I wonder if this thing exist with without backlight bleeding or do I have to play lottery every single time to get the normal one.

    Multiple bent lids

I am on my fourth laptop of this exact model. Every time I ordered a new one I kept getting one with a bent lid. I don't know it's my bad luck but it was annoying each time. Best Buy's Geek Squad won't repair it without a fee because it is cosmetic damage even though it came like that. Only one model came in perfect shape but then within an hour of its use, it shut down on me. All I was doing was installing updates and then it got stuck in a restarting loop where the fans would go full power every time it turned on. I tried reinstalling windows using various methods and kept getting errors. I exchanged that one and now I got a bent lid again. At this point I'm so tired I'm keeping it. It's a shame because I really wanted to love this laptop. Make sure you check your lids when you order this one. It's a great laptop otherwise but it happened to me 3 times which is crazy.

      Dear Valued Customer,

Certainly, we understand your disappointment with the bend lid. This is absolutely not the kind of experience we want any of our customers to have. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control, testing, and inspections. What you've experienced was not intentional and this was a random case. If possible, please attach an image at [email protected] and provide this link for reference. I'll do my best to provide a quick resolution to your case.
