Glad I pulled the trigger
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was set on shopping for a Ryzen laptop. Had my Sony Vaio 13inch for over 10 years with 2nd gen i5 so it was time to upgrade. After 3 months of watching videos and reading reviews I cam across this G14 on sale $200 off.... Sorry for the long read below. Note: -No camera ( I have a usb cam) -Using with lid closed supposedly weakens performance. I do not game anymore. Just want a fast machine. -Love the fact it looks business professional but has dedicated GPU 6GB and a Ryzen 9 -Wish the dot matrix lid was cheaper!! Could not allow myself to spend 800 buck more for hi res screen and dot matrix nothing else is improved on the Animatrix model. -1 of 2 memory cards is soldered in. I went ahead and placed a large 32GB RAM card in. So it is 8GB (soldered)+32GB so only 16GB is dual-channel the extra memory will work as single channel (I think, could be wrong). -After opening up the bottom with screwdriver, it looks very easy to clean should it get dusty etc. in a few years. -Runs cool. I use as a desktop replacement on a custom cooling pad I built. [Amazon vesa mount tray with two Noctua NF-A8 5V fans pushing air up. Runs 14deg Celsius cooler] -Reviews say it is decent at cooling and not running too hot. No issues yet (but I am not gaming).

Great laptop but defective screen
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great laptop for the first 3 months. It was the laptop I wanted: fast, long battery life, and small. It was able to play my games without any issue. Then the screen issue appears: black screen and half screen fill with lines; unusable. This would happen when ever is wakes up from sleep. Sometimes it goes back to normal after I close/reopen the lid or shutdown/restart it or turned it back on the next day. I was force to wipe and reinstall Windows in hoping that it would fixed the issue but it didn't. The HDMI output to TV would work with bad display)I finally decided to have BB in late July to repair it (I told them it was either the motherboard or screen was defective). Three weeks later I got the laptop back and they replaced the motherboard. It was fined for two weeks then the same screen issue came back ( black screen and half display with lines). I'm going the second time BB would replace the lemon laptop with a new one or replace the defective. screen

Powerful Gaming Notebook
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Geeky gamers out there have been seeking the holy grail in a gaming notebook PC that fuses both performance and aesthetics in a portable personal computing gaming experience. One of the most anticipated and talked about gaming notebooks to finally drop is the Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 with Windows 10 operating system. The builder’s ambition was to design a powerful gaming notebook to compete in the market. Weighing in at 1.3 kilograms, it is so light it literally feels like you are holding paper. What makes this notebook the talk of the gaming universe is the combination of AMD’s Ryzen 9 4900 HS chip and the NVIDIA G Force RTX 2060 with Max Q design. Yeah, I know what you are thinking, “it’s not normal to pack so much punch in a small package.” Or is it? Since there is so much to cover in this review, I will highlight hardware specs, performance, and pros and cons, including uploading bench tests pictures to help the viewer come to a better purchasing decision. Hardware: It comes with standard IO connections. Two slots for USB type A, two slots for USB type C (in and out) one of them having display port capabilities and power delivery, an HDMI 2.0b output, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a standard AC power input. It must be said that it is not recommended to charge the notebook with the power brick USB type C power delivery while gaming. Stick to the traditional AC power adapter if doing so. The power button comes with a fingerprint login key feature. This is becoming the standard with all laptops and notebooks, and at times it feels like the feature was a hit and miss experience. The function keys have been conveniently spaced so that there is more room for your hands. A highlight was the four hot keys placed apart from the rest of the keyboard. These hot keys allow for quicker microphone adjustments, up and down volume controls, and the manufacture’s shortcut to their Armory Crate Program Application. The hot keys allowed for a better gaming, since it prevents one from leaving their game by having to go all the way out to the Windows task bar menu. The track pad had no friction, as my fingers slid easily on it. One hardware feature that caught my eye was the fingerprint free keyboard made from magnesium alloy. This prevents from leaving your fingerprint smudges all over. However, the way we game at our home, it did require wiping the sweat and dirt build up from extended play. Also, there is no built-in webcam. Not a big a deal for me. Performance: Benchmark tests against the CPU and GPU by using free software downloaded on the notebook. The benchmark software programs used were as follows; Cine Bench R20, Heaven Bench 4.0, and 3D Mark Bench basic edition. I have included screenshots of 8 tests ran on the G14. Tests included running silent bench, performance, turbo, min and max frames per minute, sky diver, night raid, fire strike, and time spy. Due to limit of documents being able to be uploaded, I was not able to upload images for two 3D Mark basic edition benches. Those were Fire Strike Bench with a score of 14,295 and Time Spy Bench with a score of 6,229. Pros and Cons: The G14 has a 14” screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. While not the ideal 144Hz refresh rate that most gamers like to flirt with, the screen did display minor ghosting even with the manufactures disclosure of 14ms to 21ms response time. This machine was pushed to its limits, so the fan did get loud obviously. If you do push the G14 for a long time, the keyboard does get hot in the middle, while the action keys on the side are cooler. The backlight is not RGB ready and it’s backlighting is not bright enough. The pros outweigh the cons however. The G14 consistently performed on the benchmark tests with decent grades. The Armory Crate Program did have many setting options that made it practical as a main hub for CPU performance settings, peripherals add ons. The G14 was very compact and light and the slim USB type C travel power brick charger complemented the machine.

A 14 inch beast
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This little computer has been a beast. Really hard to fault it. About all I could say is it'd be nice if the keyboard was brighter and the speakers were louder. Other than that hard to be the size and performance at this price.

GAME CHANGER FOR GAMING LAPTOP!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wow.. shockingly powerful CPU for such a small laptop!! GAME CHANGER for gaming laptops on the go!! Not only a fantastic gaming laptop, but also has a really powerful brand new AMD mobile cpu, and compared to an intel based gaming laptop I have, it runs a lot faster. It won’t necessarily help you on most games, but it WILL help you on things like unzipping / unraring files, and anything CPU bound. Not only is it really powerful for a laptop, especially for anything intel based around this price, but the battery life while not gaming is absolutely stellar!! As long as I am not gaming, I am getting about 9 hours or so, just doing things like surfing the web and watching videos. Oh.. and a great SCREEN!! It is only 1920x1080 resolution, and comes with an NVIDIA GTX 2060 Max-Q. At that resolution, for the 3 games I installed and a few days playing, it sliced thru them like butter!! Sekiro Shadows Die Twice looked amazing, and yeah, it wasn’t running at 4k, but it ran super smooth, and because you don’t need that much resolution for a 14” screen. Most gamers will not realize higher resolution, but you know what they will “feel”? Frame rates that can not only be sustained, but because in this laptop, it has AMD Freesync technology, that eliminates screen tearing if you frame rate goes over 120 frames per second. One of the other games I tried also looked even more amazing, DOOM Eternal! It runs GREAT! For anyone wondering, I am comparing this laptop to a Alienware laptop that has a RTX 2070 Max-Q, also running on a 1920x1080 panel, and while DOOM seemed to run slightly faster, it was negligible at best. The RTX 2070 max-q was probably too large to fit in this laptop’s form factor, and because of it’s smaller ultraportable size, would have made it get much hotter while gaming. The 2060 Max-Q was a good trade off, and kept the price on this laptop lower. Ok.. So here is the deal.. I also hooked this laptop up to a 65” Sony HDR TV and surround amp via the HDR port on the right side of the laptop. Was able to get HDR and Dolby Atmos enabled in Windows. Just make sure you select your secondary display as the audio source in the bottom right corner where the sound icon is in windows. So not only was I able to get this all working on my TV, but also managed to change the resolution while gaming to 2560x1440 and still maintain about the same frames per second in both DOOM Eternal, and Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. Both games pushed thru Dolby Atmos surround sound to my amp as well. The screen itself isn’t too bad. Mine had very good black levels, not amazing OLED level blacks, but really dark, and what was most surprising… pretty good viewing angles for this kind of laptop screen panel. I have had a few other laptops, and move off center from the screen and it washes out pretty quickly. This one you had to really move off angle quite a bit before it started washing out. Build quality is a step up from previous Asus ROG laptops I have seen, and I just cannot believe that this thing is so small. I absolutely love what Asus has done on this laptop. You open it up, and as you open the screen hinge on the bottom to lift up the back of the laptop off the surface it sits on. This is great, as for the first time, I don’t necessarily have to worry about carrying a laptop cooler with fans under it. Even under full load while gaming, the little lift helped keep it relatively cool for such a small form factor. If you are going for really long sessions, you might want to invest in a cooler, but I don’t think it is necessary as long as it has some air flow while the laptop is open. I was a little worried about the keyboard, but all in all, it works well for gaming, and most productivity tasks. I do find myself missing the numeric keypad, but the keys feel very good on touch. I am not however a big fan of the backlit keyboard. Because the keyboard is silver, it is really difficult to see any lights come through evenly, and even when they do come through they aren’t very visible except when you are in the dark. If you happen to have a route that supports WIFI 6, you will not be disappointed with wireless connections speeds. I am getting better speeds and range with the wifi on this laptop than an older laptop I have. I have an Asus gaming router, ROG Rapture GT-AX11000, that happens to have this newer wireless tech, and I am literally getting the same download and upload speeds than a desktop pc that I have ethernet wired in. And, from further distances away too. The only thing that is also a tiny ding on this laptop, is the port placements on the side. Appreciate 2 USB-A ports for sure, can potentially get in the way for certain desk configurations. Well, that’s it for now. I am going to finish up some documents for work on this very laptop, and then PLAY SOME GAMES! Also.. I wrote this review on said laptop. =)

I really liked this laptop
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really wanted to get and keep this laptop. The Ryzen 9 is a powerful 8-core processor. What I loved: Form factor - gaming laptop in 14" and light Screen hinge - Love how it hinges and lifts the back up for better airflow Performance for size What I liked: Keyboard feel - Typing was very nice 1TB storage Design - I'm not a big fan of silver, but this looked pretty good with the white lid What I didn't like: Keyboard backlighting. Worse than just not having any backlighting at all Only one M.2 slot. To be expected for the size, but really limits internal storage/cost ratio Soldered RAM. Again, compromises due to the form factor. At 16GB you get good dual channel. Can swap the 1 8GB SoDIMM with 16 or 32GB, but then the ram is unbalanced. No Thunderbolt 3. Tough when you have a dock with drives, screens, etc. hooked up. USB-C with DP takes care of some of that, but is bandwidth limited. TLDR - Loved the laptop, but in the end, it made too many compromises that I couldn't live with. Would I buy it again? Yes, if the limitations fit the use case.

The BEST one around this price range!
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I saw Red Alert Remastered and my childhood memories were coming back, so I had to get a gaming laptop. I think I went a little overboard since the specs on this is more than enough for that game lol. I’m new to gaming laptops so I had to learn all these different specs and stuff. From what I researched this laptop has some really nice specs in a small package. Make sure to buy a cooling pad just to help it out since it gets HOT during gaming. Cons: I wish the display is 4K

Often have BSOD and then "unexpected error"
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm an ASUS guy. My last 2 laptops were ASUS G series. This laptop has a really nice build and great performance. However, after a month of using it, it starts showing up BSOD for no specific reason more often. Yesterday, it crashed and turned to BSOD every 5 minutes then I decided to return it. There might be conflicts somehow with the OS (I use the default Windows 10 home) which makes it crashed all the time. Then I chose to reset the laptop using Windows 10 OS Reset and it is hung at the start-up screen with the "unexpected error", which I cannot have it reboot or work normally anymore. Even if I forcibly turn it off and turn it back on, it will get into that error window and stay stuck there.

Too Good to Be True...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s a beautiful laptop.... but the screen has already died... The screen started showing lines just outside the store return period... Now at just over a month, the screen is almost all lines if it even comes on at all... I purchased the laptop on July 31, 2020 (received Aug. 3) and by Sept. 9, 2020 the screen was all lines. Other Thoughts: 1. The fans really are as loud as noted in other reviews. 2. The only two USB ports are in the middle on the right-hand side... not the most convenient if you plug in a mouse. 3. I knew before purchase, but oddly this laptop does not have a webcam.

Part gaming beast, part useless junk
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The laptop itself when it works is great, it runs everything I use normally perfectly. On maximum performance mode the laptop does get pretty hot on the underside which isn't really a problem when you are using it on a desk or a hard surface. I really wanted to love this laptop since there is so much hype about it being a performance beast despite its size. However, I have had a myriad of issues such as the laptop freezing, screen going black, and multiple BSODs. Oh not to mention random, loud pops coming from the speaker. These are issues that don't have a clear solution and is not something ASUS can fix, since it's hard to recreate and no specific cause. The one year warranty only covers specific hardware defects. I can't return in to best buy since the return window is only 15 days since the day of purchase. This is what the customer service rep told me after I contacted ASUS about it. I have tried to find solutions for these errors to no avail, such as reinstalling drivers, updating, reinstalling windows, and resetting the entire thing to no avail. You can see the photo of my reliability monitor and see that the reliability score of this laptop is consistently less than 5 over a month that I have been using the laptop. So now, I am stuck with a $1500 laptop that works some of the time.

Great for VR, DCS, and everything else.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received the ASUS ROG Zephyrus at no cost for an honest review. I am mainly a VR gamer (Odyssey +)and this laptop did not disappoint. After 5 days of testing, I am well-pleased with most features this laptop offers. I was excited about the 1 TB SSN M.2. NVMe, one of the best SSDs with read/write speeds of 3,500MBS/2,500MB/S. I am a DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) gamer, and I was able to run it with the VR no problem, smoothly, on high settings. I did experience some stuttering while looking around in the Mixed Reality Portal, but it seemed to get better over time so I’m assuming the updates stabilized it some. I also played Space Pirate Trainer and it was smooth, though arguably it is not one of the more GPU intensive games. Just for your pleasure, I am including several benchmarks from the free versions of Cinebench and 3DMark, so if you’re interested, you could see what your score is compared to this laptop. Expectedly, the highest benchmark score was when I was right by my window and the wind coming in was about 40-50 degrees. Since the fan constantly runs, it kept the laptop cool and it had better performance. After 3 hours of non-VR gaming at performance settings with slightly less than medium brightness and medium sound, the battery was still going strong, with about a quarter left. Speaking of sound, 4-speakers produce very nice DTS audio with capability for very loud volumes. Of course, your performance may vary depending on game and brightness settings, but I could easily expect 3 hours on most games and at least 5 hours of normal mixed use. Without gaming, I’m sure it would last the full 10 hours it’s rated at, but I did not keep it on that long. The design is one that when you open the laptop, it raises the back end of the base, enablins the fan to disperse the heat. The heat is dispersed in multiple directions, so the heat isn’t just concentrated towards just the screen or just the back. The fan did run much harder when I was playing VR, as expected. One cool thing is that if you run out of juice, you can charge this laptop through a USB-C if you have a spare portable charger and a cable, though the adapter it comes with is a standard power port. The one thing I wish they would have done with the laptop, is included a standard USB port on the same side as the HDMI port, because the VR headset requires HDMI and USB, and with the current laptop layout, I have to split the cables to opposite sides. This makes my setup a bit messier than I would like, and it makes using the keyboard a burden with VR connected. The keyboard is nice and solid, it being a laptop, you obviously don’t get the depth you’d probably like from your standard mechanical one. I also found the arrow keys a bit small (1/2 in wide by 3/8 in tall). Still, it’s “clicky” and responsive which does give it the gamer feel. The mouse/trackpad is butter smooth, and it glides across the screen at 120hz. The chassis is magnesium alloy, so it’s very sturdy and it feels like it. Though I won’t try it, I’m sure the shell could take light abuse and be quite ok. The power button is also a fingerprint reader, so I found that to be very ingenious of the designers. I set it up to open with my finger, and it was very accurate and responsive. The software included is the ROG Armoury Crate which lets you customize your setup and see your current specs and performance. It’s 5 performance levels, of which you can use 3 while on battery, and all 5 when plugged in. They selections are: Windows, Silent, Performance, Turbo, and Manual. Additionally, there is the standard AMD Radeon settings app you can use to customize. Lacks ethernet port, but you can just use a dongle if you really want. My internet speed was 100% on wireless to what it is wired, so I have no complaints. The wireless card is great. No webcam but that would add to the cost, so I’m ok without one. Despite minor missing features, this laptop’s performance should be able to deliver on high settings for most regular and VR games. I recommend it and I think it’ll be hard not to be pleased with the versatility of this ASUS laptop.

Amazing laptop with minor problems.
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The laptop works very well, it has the expected power to support my work and games. It has an amazing screen, and about the response time, I never noticed anything wrong with it, maybe because I never tried a less reponse time screen. But for the things that annoys me. There is a coiling buzzing sound that comes out when I turn off the keyboard backlight. some alterations that needs to be made to avoid overheating, these alterations take about 20 - 30 mins, I did them after I just opened the laptop for the first time. The battery sometimes don’t exert the expected lifetime, so I just restart the laptop and it’s fine. Overall the laptop is so good, met my expectations, I never had any problem with overheating, fps drops, etc. the performance is overwhelming, and It’s design looks even better in real life. For the small problems mentioned, there is no perfect laptop, so just don’t overthink like I did before buying it.

Decent piece of hardware a real bang for a buck
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well I was at same time frightening and amazing experience with this machine to see it working day by day. Must say now I am a fan! As of today this is more then a week I've it in use and got no sign of any BSOD whatsoever. Moreover the power of this relatively 'humble' machine is tremendous specifically for me who has gotten used to Macs before. I must admit a gigantic progress in Microsoft OSes and can say my old MBP 13" of 2017 is far below the par compare to ROG 14 Zephyrus. Using advisory soft as System Mechanic regularly for tracking down system and hardware health. Love intelligent ArmoryCrate functions as for switching between fan modes assigning the appropriate profile to the operation in use. Unfortunately IMHO Mac is no longer cares about end user experience while Asus obviously cherishes it!
