    Excellent laptop for the money

I bought this laptop on sale. It came with Windows 11 Home in S-mode. I removed S-mode and has been using it for a year now. It works perfect for a regular everyday tasks (browsing, e-mail, youtube and other streaming services). I don't use it for heavy graphics games, but it handles simpler games (e.g. Sims) just fine. The best thing about the laptop is the screen, picture is very detailed and the colors are awesome. I did not like setting Windows 11 with the Microsoft account, but there are ways to work around it and run the system only using local accounts. Overall it is a great buy for just $300

Purchased this Asus for $300 on sale and for this price it performs exactly to my expectations. My desktop is from 2015 and laptop 2013 so speed seems great 15sec to load, no stutter to any streaming, and low fan noise. Still offers upgrade paths for SSD and ram up to 20gb (look on youtube). Screen has low nit and is glossy but in darkened space works well, sound for my non-audiophile ears seems good. Overall this was what I needed for portability and convenience even if battery life is 2-4hr.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because you do not get the Asus Vivobook. This is the Asus X515, which is a slightly different model laptop. The X515 does have a touch screen, is 8GB Memory and 256GB Hard Drive. There is no backlit keyboard. It still has the fingerprint scanner, and i3 processor. This computer is far from the best, but for the price it is a fantastic computer. I needed a new computer, since my MacBook was outdated and I did not want to spend $1,000+ when the current MacBook Air is 2 years old. I paid $300 for this on sale, and I am beyond happy with it. I can easily use Microsoft 365, and can plug in my CAC reader for access to myPay. For me, that's all I needed this for and it has exceeded those needs. My wife also plays SIMs on this and some other basic games, and also streams some movies/videos and it works fine for that.

Decent Entry Level Touchscreen Laptop with 1 Flaw

I purchased this laptop at an extremely attractive price on a Best Buy Deal of the Day. At the price I paid it is a four to five star value. However, even at Best Buy's current Clearance price I believe it is at best only an average value. I apologize in advance for the length of this review; but, wanted to give as much info as I could. The X515EA is is a mostly adequate entry level touch screen MS Windows laptop with, in my opinion, one major flaw ('feature'). It is reasonably fast with a core i3 processor, a 256GB SSD, and 8GB of RAM. The unit I purchased came preloaded with Windows 11 in 'S' mode. The one frustrating 'feature' I found with this laptop is the keyboard numeric pad (and the longer I use it the more frustrating I find it). The numeric pad is non-standard. Every other computer and laptop I have owned that included a numeric keypad placed the '0' key under the '2' key (some have a wide '0' key under both the "1' and '2' keys). For some reason, Asus placed the '0' key under the '1' key and the decimal point ('.') under the '2' key on the X515EA's numeric keypad. This makes data entry using the keypad quite frustrating when touch typing. I have not previously owned an Asus branded computer or laptop with a separate numeric keypad so I don't know if the above 'feature' is standard for Asus keyboards with a numeric keypad or unique to this model. However, be aware of the issue before you buy. If I had known this, I might have elected to purchase a different laptop. I'm not sure why Asus elected to ship this laptop with Windows in 'S' mode. With a core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, it is easily powerful enough to run the full version of Windows. I elected to switch Windows out of 'S' mode as soon as I booted it up. Although it is easy to switch Windows out of 'S' mode (just do a Google or Bing search), be aware that if you elect to do so, you apparently cannot switch back. However, I have been quite satisfied with the operation of this laptop running the full version of Windows 11 as I said above, The laptop performs well when set up (other than the numeric keypad issue). I read some professional reviews of this model that took issue with the lack of a backlit keyboard and screen brightness. I am actually quite satisfied with the video performance of this laptop including screen brightness. I thought the screen brightness was fine and that video images were sharp and clear. While a backlit keyboard would have need nice, given the choice, I would prefer a touchscreen laptop with no keyboard backlighting over a laptop with a backlit keyboard without a touchscreen. The keyboard and touchpad seem acceptable (other than the numeric keypad issue) and the touchscreen works well. Touch typing with the keyboard isn’t great; but, not really bad other than the issue of the placement of the ‘0’ key on the numeric pad. The laptop has a decent number of external ports (2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 USB 3.2 port, 1 USB-C 3.2 port, 1 HDMI port, and 1 microSD card slot). The laptop does not have an ethernet port and the microSD card is partially exposed when inserted (I personally prefer the 'spring loaded' microSD card slot design some laptops have where you fully insert the microSD card and push on the card to eject it when you wish to remove it. I think this reduces the risk of damaging the card when moving the laptop. Unfortunately, this laptop does not have this feature). If you do feel the need for an ethernet port after purchasing this laptop, you might consider purchasing a USB-C hub with a built in ethernet port. I believe USB-C to ethernet port adapters are also available. There is very limited paper documentation in the laptop package (unfortunately, the new normal) and I could not find a PDF copy of the User Manual preloaded on the SSD. The User Manual is available on MyAsus (Asus Support Site) and I strongly recommend if you purchase this laptop, you download it as soon as you first boot up the laptop and use it to familiarize yourself with your new laptop. The box for this laptop contains documents advertising several very attractive offers from Asus. These would be great if they were valid. Unfortunately the advertised offers are apparently either not valid for this laptop or not valid if you purchase the laptop from Best Buy (as I discovered when I tried to follow the directions on how to take advantage of the offers). The first is an offer of a one year loss/damage warranty if you register your laptop online with Asus. When I registered my laptop with Asus, they sent me an e-mail after registration saying that the one year loss/damage offer was not valid for laptops purchased at Best Buy (I still recommend you register your laptop with Asus even if the offer is not valid). The second is an offer for a three month extension (from 12 to 15 months) of the product warranty if you write a review of the product following the directions included on the documentation. Unfortunately, when you follow the link for this in the printed directions, there does not appear to be an option to review this laptop (X515EAU). At least I couldn't find one. If I do find one, I will update this review with instructions on how to review the laptop to obtain the extended warranty. Again, these would be great reasons to consider this laptop if they were valid. As it is, what were meant as incentives to consider the X515EAU instead end up wasting your time (which is sort of a shame). Again, this is not a bad little laptop (except for the stupid design ‘feature’ with the numeric pad!). However even at the current Clearance price, there are more attractive options available from other manufacturers. If the price decreases further, you might consider this one.

This computer is great if you can keep it plugged in at all times. It's peppy, the touchscreen is a wonderful thing, and so is the fingerprint reader for security. The 1080p monitor is easy on the eyes and sharp! I even like the keyboard. But using it unplugged? Fawgettabowtit! You'll be lucky to get 2 hours. My 10-yr-0ld cheapo Toshiba, which I horribly neglected, blows this away. I turned the monitor to dim and it didn't even phase the battery drain. I'm still in S mode, I haven't loaded any programs, I keep bluetooth off, the only thing on is wifi, and every minute I use this thing rattles of a percentage point of battery life. Sadly, this is neither a joke nor an exaggeration. I went to all the settings to maximize battery life, read the troubleshooting guide, yadda yadda. Even after closing the lid and entering hibernation, it still ticked down 10% in 18 hours. It ate another 6% doing this review. I'm sorry, but to me, a battery life of 100-120 minutes is not acceptable. Bummer, cuz the other features are excellent and this is a great price.

      Dear StillLookin,

Thank you for writing a comment.

We certainly understand your concern regarding the short battery charge life. In order to improve or prolong the battery charged time, please try to do a battery calibration manually. To start with, please drain it completely then charge it fully without using the system. Once fully-charged, please use the system, without the AC adapter connected, and drain it completely again. Please repeat the charging process thereafter. Also, please verify if the unit is running with the most current system update and third-party battery draining applications are not running if not in used.

If you need further assistance, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than glad to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent at: http://bit.ly/AsusLiveChat.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

It’s great for the price. This was exactly what I was looking for. I like the touch screen and the fingerprint ID to unlock. I use it primarily for crafting so it’s perfect for my needs. The only con is that the battery life is not that great, but I don’t need a laptop to last 6 hours.

my dad needed it and he wanted something with lots of storage for his music. it worked perfectly for that. only had one small issue with the screen not responding but at that point my dad had left it on for days in a pretty dusty location so it was expected. holding the power button to restart worked though.

I got this as a Deal of the Day sale and I'm very happy with it. At the time of this review, the 11th generation Intel core i3 processor is one of the more recent revisions (12th is the latest) and it's snappy without generating too much heat. For the price, the specs are well rounded and more than enough for most people. I was able to wipe the drive and use Ubuntu on it without any issues. The fingerprint sensor doesn't quite work but I don't care for that. (Note: installing a custom OS will void any warranty/return policy; proceed at your own risk). I hook it up to my 4K external (4K@30Hz; not 60Hz) and it makes for a nice dual laptop/desktop setup. The battery is not the greatest (it lasts about 5 hours in "power saver" mode) but that is also not an issue for my use case. If you can find it on sale, grab it; this laptop tends to sell out, fast.

I looked at all brands in the $400 range and this came out far ahead in almost every category on the spec sheet. I had to visit other websites because BestBuy did not list all the features of this laptop, like fingerprint sensor or noise cancelling mic. Screen was 1080 and most others were not, some did not have USB-C, some did not have HDMI out and microSD slot, or fingerprint sensor. This has all those features. I like it, only thing that could make it better would be a backlit keypad but at this price with all the other features you get I'm not complaining.

To everyone considering this or another laptop, I highly recommend getting this one. I’ve been a die hard ASUS fan since I first could type on a computer. But this one still impressed me, I was coming from an HP Stream Notebook type laptop, and honestly, this isn’t even in the same league as the other one. It’s leagues ahead in every way. It has more RAM, a better motherboard and processor, and even something as simple as the key switches are nice. Highly recommend.

I really like this computer. It took a little getting use too with the windows 11. I wanted some of the programs that I had on my old computer so I opted to take it out of s mode. Screen is a great size and good good. The touch screen works nicely and I have not issues to report. I have had it about a month and would buy again at the price I paid which was $299.99 on sale being the deal of the day.

This is a nice laptop... the touch screen is very responsive and it serves the purposes my wife needs for her business .... im sure it isnt up to specs for heavy gaming but its great for small tasks and web use... more memory would be a big plus but not a deal brealer... she loves it and its very light weight... the battery charges fast but it doesn't last a long time ... got it on sale for 400 plus tax... well worth that but i wouldn't say much more... we needed apps outside of windows so we took it out of s mode... still performing great and it only took about 5 minutes
