Useful For Airbnb - Major Drawbacks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you own an Airbnb that’s an ADU or you have a semi-private entrance, August is an absolute requirement. It interfaces with Airbnb and will automatically set the guest up in the lock with access that matches their stay exactly and sends them an email with instructions. This is such an enormous time saver and adds so much security to the house, I really cannot understate how important it has been to my Airbnb. With all of that said. August has some major drawbacks when upgrading. My first lock was a Gen 1. 80% of guests had no issue entering and exiting. But when I added the August Keypad ($59) for the 20% that didn’t like using the app, I found out that I would need to upgrade the lock to use temporary codes for guests. I was annoyed, but I liked the system, so I upgraded to a Gen 3 lock ($149). After I upgraded, I hit my next issue, there is no way to transfer lock information from one lock to another. That means I had to contact all 30 of my upcoming guests and re-register them manually in the new lock one by one. Then, when I connected Airbnb to the new lock I got another surprise, temporary codes can’t be automatically sent to new guests unless you also have the August WiFi Connect device which costs an additional $79. By adding a keypad which I thought it would be a quick $60 upgrade to fix a common guest problem. It ended up being nearly $300 and hours of setup work contacting annoyed guests to join a brand new system. We’re all of these upgrades and hassle worth it? $290 is a LOT to ask for a properly functioning keypad system that allows guests to get temporary codes. But now that it is set up, I am very happy with it and it saves a lot of hassle for guests who don’t understand tech. The guests seem to be much happier too. I also like the fact that it knows when the door is open. So if a guest leaves it slightly open, I get an alert. That is super useful and was not available on the Gen 1 lock. I use the same door as guests do to access my part of the house and I have to admit that I really like the Auto Unlock feature. It makes taking groceries in much easier. The batteries that came with the unit died after just 1 day. I had more batteries, but I don’t think the batteries it came with were insulated well at the factory. The Gen 3 unit is also much louder than the Gen 1 model. When Gen 3 opens and closes, it has a loud mechanical whirring/grinding sound and no sound indication that it is open or closed. It is also made in China compared to Gen 1 which was made in the United States. Aside from these flaws, Gen 3 has all metal parts which is really nice for a high use door and it does recognize commands faster than Gen 1.

Not what you think it is
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My lock worked for a whole 3 months then it started to not connect to some of the devices while others it would then it would randomly log off account users and now I can’t add them back in. It’s a hassle to work with and support seems like you are calling someone that works from their garage.

Pointless
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wish the staff would have notified my 18 yr old daughter that bought his for me as a gift that you also need the wifi bridge to ensure your elderly grandparents lock it while they are away. If I wanted to just be lazy and not carry a key iwould go through my garage. A waste of $150.

keeps disconnecting
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had read about this issue on other reviews and thought that it cant be the case with a manufacturer that has been around for a while. well, the lock is sometimes seen in the app and most often not seen in the app, spoke with tech support at August and they were clueless.

Does not fully Rotate Deadbolt
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lock does not fully rotate the deadbolt. If you have a gap between the door and frame this will probably not work.

Great, only with the Wireless HUB
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I made a separate review for the hub. So you can check that out over there. As for the smart lock. It has great features and I enjoy it very much. That is only with the expensive hub. luckily I got them on sale and paid as much as just one Smart lock Price. Anywho, As for the smart lock, it is only really good with the smart hub. Without it, you are missing features such as notifications of when the door is locked/unlocked if the door is open/closed, and for registered users that you add in you can see who does the aforementioned features above. But without the hub its only smart within a few feet of the door where you will be waiting to connect to the Bluetooth. You can open our door manually faster than you could open it with your phone. Would I recommend it? Yes and No Yes with the Hub to get all the great features that the smart lock has. And no without the Hub. It is pretty useless without the hub.

Auto unlock is unreliable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Auto unlock worked for a few days with my phone and it took me a few days to get to work with my wife's phone. Since then it works when it wants, it may work for 2-3 days and then it will not work for a week. Other times I may come home and be in the driveway for 5 minutes then it will unlock the lock. I did a complete reset, completely reset the connection device and it is a straight shot 4 feet away from the lock. We have a strong wifi signal and it is still very finicky. I have replaced the batteries and I am hoping that may help out but I do not have high hopes for it. using the app it works fine every time it is just the auto unlock feature.

Does Not work
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lock installed easy, but it would not close the bolt all the way. The mechanism to turn the bolt was too loose. Cheap, poorly made.
