Love our August Doorbell

We love our August doorbell! People often ask what it is and how it works, as they are used to seeing the Ring doorbell. My husband did quite a bit of research before buying the item and wanted something that was Apple Home Kit compatible. We also purchased the August lock. The only reason I did not give it 4 stars is there can be a slight delay for the video, I understand this is a common problem with most video doorbells.

There are some purchases that I've had buyers remorse not long after the newness has worn off; however, this is one device that I'm so thankful to have and we use it often. No guessing who's at the door.

Returned this item due to poor connectivity numerous times. Video quality is excellent when it works. I could never get the two way communication to work properly. That feature worked about 60% of the time.

This product was awesome. The only downside is installing the camera was a bit tricky. Thankfully my dad is a handyman and he was able to install it just fine. It does use the previous wires to your doorbell, so you must have access to those.

I use the August doorbell with the August HomeKit smart lock on iOS10. It's just okay, not great. The app is very slow and clunky. I want instant video and access when someone rings the doorbell. By the time I get to my phone and open up the app, it's already been way too long to answer the door or see who it is.

This still has scope for improvement esp the speed at which the notification is sent but by far this is the best product that is available in the market at the moment.
Connectivity with gen 1 lock was better than gen 2 smart locks.

August HomeKit Package

This is from my review of the August HomeKit lock:
We ordered two HomeKit versions of the locks, the camera/doorbell and the keypad.
1. The lock itself is HUGE. Not very attractive even if the finish matches other hardware. It operates smoothly and unlocks as it should when you're nearby. Still the knob was too large for my wife's hand. You must have a deadbolt installed as the August lock is a retrofit only including the rear part of the lock.
2. Each lock requires its own August Connect to act as the gateway between the Bluetooth and wireless connections. Each Connect must be within 20 feet of the lock which isn't always easy as there may not be electricity in the entryway. The Connect is required if you want to view or control the state of the lock remotely.
3. The Keypad is simple and does its job as expected.
4. The camera/doorbell is a total mess. Setup is easy but it goes offline frequently; sometimes it will come back online but more often than not, it will just stay offline. There was a "secret" way to reset the camera in the iOS software but, apparently, it no longer works after an update. This is a problem because if the camera is offline, you have to remove it from the wall which means having to remove the security screw; not an easy task. Then, you have to push the reset button and reverse the process. Picture is clear and the voice is easy to understand on both ends. It does include a wedge for doorbells close to the door.
5. In addition to the fact that you can't reset the doorbell in the iOS software, you can't do a lot because there is NO documentation. You would think that shipping their locks for a couple of years, they would have some documentation even online. The only support is the FAQ and installation video for each product. There's a lot to be customized but just try figuring out how to get there. Beyond that, contact support.
6. Support is decent. Submit a ticket and you're promised you'll be contacted by the next day. Each time, I waited 24 hours and then called them directly because I hadn't heard from anyone. The only phone number access will be sent to you in a receipt for your support ticket.
I have given up on August as a viable solution after waiting for months for a promised delivery. It was a waste of time and I replaced the August system with a Kwikset Kēvo which had an easier setup. One has to buy a Bluetooth Gateway but one is sufficient for multiple locks. It doesn't have a keypad but two real keys, two e-Keys (additional e-Keys are $0.99) and a key fob. In addition, I installed a Ring Pro and Ring Cameras. All-in-all, a much easier installation and they work flawlessly. In addition, the Ring and Kēvo work together so I can unlock the door from the Ring app.

It took two units to finally get it operational. Once working it is a great thing to have to watch your front door. Note you must have old style door bell, the two tone mechanical type to work.

I will be the first one to say I told you so on this item. I read the company website and that was it. I should have done a better job doing my research. I owned this product for 6 months before I ripped it off my house. I contacted the tech support every week for 5 months letting them know that there was a bug in the software. They kept telling me that nothing was wrong and it was only me. I gave them everything that they would need to verify the problem. It was only then that they acknowledged the issue. Now they can't seem to fix it. The problem at the time of writing this is that if you have an Android phone you can't two way talk with someone at the door. This was a major problem for me. After getting rid of this device and getting a competitor, I noticed that the audio and video for this device are sub par. I consider myself very knowledgeable about software and electronics. Trust me when I say that the August is a waste of money. You are much better off getting a Skybell HD. It's cheaper, better made, easier to use, AWESOME audio and video, and you do not have to pay for a subscription to see the videos.

I have never had so many problems in my life with a purchase. I had to have august and Best Buy replace it before I could get it partially working.i spent hundreds of dollars getting a geek, electrician and a carpenter to get it running had to buy a cable and voltage enhancer as well. Now the equipment has stopped detecting most of the movement at my front door and also video records only 10% of the people at my door. What a piece of junk.

So with starting with Skybell 2.0 first that one failed as it cut in and out and lost signal quite a bit, then I decided to give the Ring a try, and again had to pay for extra features such as recording's and motion snap pictures. Now after I have been waiting for the August to come out for nearly 4 months now and sadly to say it's about as good as the sky bell 2.0 and their customer service/tech support is horrible. Please I hope everyone reading this understands that I have tried every video doorbell out there in the sky bell HD is the only way to go.
