Meh...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works as a doorbell. I spent about 2 hours fiddling with it and still havent gotten it to work yet. It keeps saying that it's too far away from the Wi-fi, but I am getting 3 of5 bars on my phone sitting right next to it. I have reset it to factory settings and started over several times still without any luck. This thing has great promise to be what it is, but it still does not work as designed.

Misleading
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Installed this camera, and it won't even work....the doorbell works fine, but the camera will not. Have tried contacting technical support and get no answers except "not enough power "....my old doorbell worked fine before this one was installed.

Does not work
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this because it was supposed to work with the Nest camera. It was returned within 24 hours beaches: no motion sensing, only caught people as they were leaving, horrible user interface, bad camera. Got another one that works much better.

Horrible
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I read a lot of other people say it doesn't work but I tried anyways. It almost never connects even with strong wifi. Over the month I've had it, it MIGHT have recorded people 4 times. I use the front door at least twice every day...

BAD PRODUCT
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the worse electronic product I have ever owned. The customer service from August is horrible too. Wait for a product from company with a proven record like Yale.

Amazing doorbell cam by AUGUST!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I truly love this doorbell cam! The set up was easy and quick, it's affordable and I feel more secure knowing who's my door even when I'm miles away. I love the ability to speak to the person on the other side and the wide picture that it provides is great. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I wish it worked with motion only vs only working when the bell is being rang. I also have the AUGUST lock and keypad and I love those too. Great products all around and I highly recommend it.

Not quite ready for prime time
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I want to review this product fairly, considering different angles and factors that make this product true to its function. PROs: 1.) Excellent video quality in proper lighting ONLY. Assuming perfect lighting and wifi connection, the video quality is excellent. Now, there's plenty of room for improvements on both these factors. Lighting compensation is non-existent, as the other reviewer said, if your camera is south-facing, it will take the background lighting and will not compensate for closer objects with low light, i.e. the face or person that's actually on your door. 2.) Design and aesthetics. It is nicely designed with a quality you can feel. 3.) Customer service is not too bad as others have mentioned. They have returned my emails and even responded to calls as expected. CONs: 1.) WiFi connectivity is very very very painful and extremely poor on this product. I have multiple wireless devices, i.e. Dropcams, Nest, Echo, Blossom watering at quite distances away from my Airport Extreme router, which have excellent connectivity. I also have 2 Wifi extenders downstairs to optimized to every corner and outdoors (Blossom watering device is connected via wifi), and still this (August) product performed poorly constantly dropping connection. I have moved one of my Wifi extender 5 feet from the front door to minimize radio interference, and still, consistently drops connection. Could this be software or very poor wifi module on the device? I dont know, but I do know my Blossom watering device, also located outside, is more than 5x away from the closest wifi source and it does not drop connection. 2.) Bracket design. The main doorbell unit attaches to a bracket, which secures to the wall. The engagement between the doorbell and bracket has some tolerance issues (not talking about the gap that it's supposed to have). Since I have been constantly removing and re-installing the doorbell, due to doing resets/reconnecting from dropping connections, it is sometimes difficult to remove the unit, even giving you an uneasy feeling of breaking it. 3.) Filed of view is not so wide thus making it necessary for a wedge base attachment. Improvments? 1.) Reliable wifi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously this is a wifi product. Make it work like the others in the market. 2.) Camera lighting compensation - renders useless if you cant make out the faces (when background is brighter the foreground). 3.) Wider filed of view. I believe a wide angled lens, for example Dropcam lens, is perfect fit for this product. 4.) WIFI WIFI WIFI The poor wifi connectivity on this device pretty much renders it useless. I will give it a few more days but it will probably go back when the connectivity does not stabilize. Wait for the second generation.

This is the Doorbell Cam for the Smart Home!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been tinkering with Smart Home products and services the past year with mixed results. I like my Ecobee thermostat, but the $249 price tag still makes it feel like an item that sits on edge of necessity vs luxury. I recently bought an Amazon Echo, but am still unable to get beyond music and a couple basic commands that have me believing my Sonos system and apps on my phone are sufficient for listening to music and getting news, weather, etc. However, I do think the Smart Home can benefit from products and services that not only fit neatly into your existing home ecosystem, but provide real value to an individual or family. Enter the August Doorbell Cam. At $199 the price seems right for what you're getting both now and via future software upgrades. Set up was straightforward but does require an existing, electrical-based doorbell in place. While the Doorbell Cam is really small and slim, it's a bit wider than some others on the market. That wasn't a problem for my house, but I've seen some pictures online of other set-ups where it hangs over wall due to the size. I have my WiFi router centrally located in my house, so connecting to my network was easy to do as well. Once in place, it worked as expected. I was alerted to a visitor at my door when I was in the back yard with my kids and with tap of a button was able to see them and speak with them via my phone. More importantly I was alerted to a solicitor who came knocking while I was at work one day. I could have spoken with them if I wanted, but didn't feel the need. The fact that I could have that type of view into my front door, however, was quite unique, given the increase in brazen burglary attempts on homes these days. I also like the fact that I can see when the UPS driver drops a package off and if I'm not going to be there for a while, I can ask my neighbor to grab it or give my wife a heads-up that something is there. While the functions today are pretty straight forward (yet powerful nonetheless) the good news is there appears to be many other features and services still to come via software updates, including what looks like a DVR-type service. August also makes a Smart Lock for the front door that works with the Doorbell Cam and allows customers to unlock the door for a guest if they so choose. I can see all sorts of applications for this integration, and the good news is both the Doorbell Cam and Smart Lock work independently of each other as well as together. Therefore, a customer can choose to use one or the other or both depending on their need. Having a view to your front door when you're not home is pretty cool and I think August has done a nice job with their Doorbell Cam, which will continue to get better and better!

Patience definitely rewarded
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love my doorbell cam. It really has changed the way I relax. Whether it's someone trying to sell me a new house, a candy bar for their school, a new religion, or a new subscription I am tired of not knowing whose knocking at my door. That's changed now. After taking some time to set up - it definitely takes time - my doorbell cam works amazingly. Paired with my August lock it's one of those technology purchases that changes your life for the better. In fact I kinda wish my lock looked more like my doorbell camera as I don't know who designed the lock but the doorbell cam looks really cool. As for set up -I was definitely frustrated. If you are not a real DIYer get help. But if you can set up other things like say your wifi router or dvr with wifi you should be able to get this. I would say three stars for set up but six stars for how it changes everything. And since you only set it up once - more stars.

Nice hardware - functionality not so much..
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using the doorbell for a year and half now as I was hoping the service will improve like most startups but seems like that overtime it's becoming worse. The top issues are: 1 - when somebody rings the bell, it takes long time to connect and at the point it does connect the person is no longer there 2 - video clips (subscription) because of the delay in many cases you see a clips of the door getting closed missing the actual person who got in. There is a sensitivity setting, the issue happens in any setting. on the positive the system also generate a still picture which usually shows the person (does not require subscription) 3 - when issue require resetting the camera (instructions by customer service) will cancel your subscription and you need to resubscribe losing the annual money you paid. Customer service neglect to mention that this is what will happen. calling customer service will tell you that at least you get your money back but I haven't seen it yet. 4 - customer service are nice people and they do try to help. However, in a situation like number 3 when asked to speak with a supervisor they tell you that there is a queue and they will call you back. they don't tell you how long it will take and it can take several days. so far it's been 3 days in my case with no callback. you can assume they won't. 5 - number 2 is for motion scenarios. if the person ring and you answer. a video clip does not get generated for it. Note: On the positive, I don't see it as hardware issue but rather software/backend so there is hope that it will get fixed but don't see it happening anytime soon. I gave it a star because the people at customer service are nice and try there best to help but at the end you care about the functionality of what you buy...

Talk about upset
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this hoping it would be better than the ring, i was mistaken. I agree several comments on here that warn you not to drill anything until you are able to connect. I 'soft' setup the doorbell cam making sure I didn't do anything I couldn't reverse right a way. First off the instructions are poor. They included two black wires instead of the tradition red and black. Of course you can read the circuit and fig out the plus and neg but not ready for someone that doesn't know to look for it Next the firmware update would fail and fail even though my signal strength is strong. I had to put a hotspot right next to the unit for it to finish updating the firmware. Once it was done updating it worked fine with the hotspot that gets less data then my wifi at the location. I jumped off the hotspot and set the camera back up on my wifi this time I didn't need to update the firmware. I was able to connect it to my home wifi this time, but I notice the doorbell would drop fast and would not stay connected. I also noticed the doorbell cam's view live setting takes a long time to connect. The doorbell was also unable to connect to my 5G network. Sad day, I would go return this today if I could. Do not buy and stay away until they sort this mess out. Should have waited another 6 months until they released it and Im sure they knew about these issue.

Great product!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Doorbell Cam is fantastic. The doorbell’s video is great quality and the lighting sensitivity is good. The speaker and mic also work well. In fact, we use it more than we thought we would. It’s been great for when our kids’ friends ring the bell and we are nowhere near the front door to let them in. It has also been great for grocery and other deliveries and to keep track of people taking care of the pets when are out our beach house. The response time is great... it takes three to five seconds to connect to the doorbell once you hit “watch live”. Once connected, there’s no lag time when you speak to a visitor using the doorbell. It integrates beautifully with the August Smart Lock. On installation… when I got it, I didn’t realize it replaced the doorbell and almost returned it thinking it would be a pain to install. After a day of it sitting on my counter, I decided to give it a go and I was shocked at how easy it was to install. Needless to say, the instructions are quite clear and easy to follow. The response time varies depending on which connection we use. On bluetooth, the app establishes a connection with the lock within about a second. Remotely, it takes longer, maybe five seconds or so. Once connected, locking and unlocking is immediate on bluetooth and a few seconds remotely. We also use the automatic lock feature, which locks the door automatically after a set period of time. It works flawlessly. And lastly, my wife and I use the auto unlock feature and that too works well. I can hear the lock unlock as I walk down the hallway leading to my door. It usually unlocks about 30ft away, which I assume is when it gets in Bluetooth range. The app let’s you customize the auto-unlock radius so presumably I could auto unlock it when I am farther away. I think the autounlock feature is not available for my “guest” account users, but that’s ok. They need to take out their phone and use the app to unlock or use the keypad.
