Loving our new August doorbell cam

Love my new doorbell cam! I was a little worried at first that I wouldn't be able to install it on my own since I am not handy at all, but it was actually super simple and quick. The online install instructions were very well-written and easy to follow, so it made setup a breeze. I ended up having a quick question for the August team, and they were very responsive and helpful when I reached out, and resolved my problem right away. Testing it all out with the app was great, so now we're just anxiously awaiting for our first guest to arrive to use the cam for real!

Packaging: 5/5
Very nice packaging. Everything is streamlined and neat.
Ease of Installation: 4/5
If you have never worked with electricity before, this might not be a project for you! If you have, you should be OK. You do need to have a basic understanding of how electricity works, and how your home is set up. Seriously, if you get nervous or are unsure about it, call an electrician. It will be worth the ~$150 to have professional do it. If you are comfortable with electricity, set up is pretty easy. The online install guide is very thorough and takes you through step by step. A few drilled holes in the wall, connecting a few wires, and you are installed.
Aesthetics After Install: 4/5
I really like the way the doorbell cam looks and feels. I also have the August Lock, and the design of the Doorbell Cam is a lot nicer looking than the lock. They actually don't even look like they are from the same company, other than they are the same color. It is a little wider than the door jamb it is mounted on, but it does not look bad at all. When we have people over, they always comment on how cool it is and ask for a demo. It looks a little out of place since our house is almost 100 years old, but it looks and feels good in it's current setup.
Setup & Phone Sync: 3/5
Set up was a little tedious, but I don't know if it was because of me and my internet connection (50+ mbps) or the actual Doorbell Cam itself. It took me about 6 attempts and about an hour and a half to sync everything up. This was after the 30+ minute wait to charge the battery after install. So Setup and sync took a total of about 2 hours. Like I said, that could have been due to my internet connection, but after each fail, there was never a reason why given. Just "an error has occurred."
Overall, I really LOVE the doorbell cam! I love that when someone rings the bell, it alerts my and my wife's phone and we can answer from anywhere. I also like that when the doorbell is rung, it snaps a photo of who is at the door and stores it. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of people "selling magazines" but are often found out to be casing homes. So this gives us a little peace of mind when we are away. If you are in the market for this type of item, this is a great setup, especially sine it syncs up with the August Lock.

Connection Issues

When it works, it's nice. It dropped my wireless connection after a few days and would connect, disconnect, connect literally every minute. Each connection or disconnection leads to a notification so my phone was blowing up ALL day! Restarting the device didn't fix the problem. After the 2nd reset, I'm back up and running but the connection is still quite low. I'm using a Linksys Wireless AC router that's ~15FT from the doorbell. Ookla Speed Test shows 40-50MBPs download speed from the location of the doorbell. I reached out to August support and their response was I need a WiFi range extended even after I sent screen shots of my download speed. SMH...
Much like Augusts other gadgets, I own the lock, the product is hit or miss. I told myself I wouldn't buy August again but am a sucker for their design. Their devices as a whole miss the mark and support isn't any help.

So sorry to hear this. We'd love to help you out. We've got a new iOS app on the way that will improve connection speed to the video.
We are able to see the WiFi signal that the Doorbell is picking up in our system. Keep in mind, it is a much smaller devices that your phone or computer, so the WiFi antenna is smaller. If you're seeing below -66 in the signal strength, an extender is recommended.

I am an IT professional with a background in networking. Here is the largest problem I have had with mine: The wifi module in the doorbell cam is ridiculously under powered. With my home router just 10 feet away, I was getting about 59-62dBm. August says it should be between -66 and 0 for good video performance. this is not at all true - the camera and the sound generally only work if you can get the dBm to -30-35dBm. So, I bought a second Netgear r6400 router to use as an additional access point. This brought the signal to about 54-56dBm, and it is still very choppy and the sound rarely works properly. I then bought a dedicated wifi range extender, and plugged it into the wall inside, directly adjacent to the doorbell. Same result - the Doorbell simply cannot make anything of a signal that runs through any walls. I then tried to put the wifi range extender outside on an outlet 7 feel from the doorbell - no better. Finally, I used an extension cord and hand held the wifi extender 3 inches away from the doorbell, and that did it! I got 31-35 dBm, and things actually started working as expected. So, in short, unless you want to put your router OUTSIDE WITHIN THREE INCHES OF The DOORBELL, this thing is a huge waste of money. And don't get me started on the completely unacceptable lag when using the camera and August lock together - it takes up to 20 seconds for it to connect to the lock and actually do anything. Save your money and wait until v3 comes out with battery power and proper signal handling.

It took minutes to install the Doorbell Cam, and get it up and running for our new home!
The lock is easy to use via the phone, and works seamlessly with the Smart Lock allowing you to review visitors and unlock / lock door sitting miles away from your home! We use it for deliveries frequently ensuring no packages are left outside by the curb.

This product is unusable. I had it for almost a year and had gone trough troubleshooting with the August team ( which is not very helpful - I actually had to buy a dedicated router just to create a network for this device so if you decide to spend $150 on this product make sure you have another $100 to buy a router). For 80% of the time doorbell is offline for some reason, it doesn't detect motion at all and I was never able to speak to anyone at the door, doorbell was never able to establish connection. I feel like I wasted $200 on a fancy wall decoration. Not sure how the competitor's products are working out but it can't be any worse than this.

Great Addition to My Home!

I work from home so this product has been a fantastic for me. Now I can let in people who need access to my home like cleaners, dog walkers, family members without having to run downstairs in the middle of an email or conference call. Added bonus- because I can better manage people's coming and goings, my dog barks far less when visitors arrive. It used to drive me nuts when I was on conference calls, frantically trying to find the mute button when he'd bark. Great addition to my home and 'office'!

I recently purchased the August Doorbell camera. I've had the lock for a year now, and can't imagine life without it, and have been waiting for a matching camera for a while. I really disliked the way Ring and Skybell look (they don't match my craftsman house), and have been delighted with how well the new camera works. There were a few issues at first, be subsequent firemware updates fixed everything. Hope recording features come soon.

Cool Doorbell - Video Unreliable

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I had mine installed by a professional and the doorbell looks and works great as a doorbell. Unfortunately, it just can't hold a consistent wi-fi signal and the clunky iOS app notifies you every time it loses wi-fi connectivity - every few minutes 24-7. I had to delete the August app from my iPhone to stop the insanity of hundreds of connectivity notifications lost - restored - lost - restored ..... Hopefully, they will get this figured out. Until then, I have a cool-looking reliable doorbell. Wait for a version that works out the kinks.

I've had the doorbell cam for a few months now, and recently added the August Lock to the mix.
Installation is easy - clear instruction and very few steps. You need to make sure you have the right voltage range to drive it. I think it expects the standard and mine had no issues. The setup with the app is straightforward too.
The key benefits for me have been being able to have a better sense of people coming and going: kids' friends, the occasional delivery, etc. It's pretty amazing to sit in my office or out of state and see (and hear!) what's going on by my front door.
The combination with the lock is powerful too - the cam allows to control the lock via the internet so I can see if the door is locked or not and unlock it when needed.
There's certainly no going back to the old fashion doorbells...

WILL go back to RING and return this peice of junk.....never had a disconnect or reboot the RING doorbell

Good product but install a mess

It's best to know exactly what you are doing prior to buying this product. You have to electrically wire it to your house, it's not as easy to install as other August product so getting a professional installer is something to really consider if you want it installed correctly and really want the product itself.

We also have a remote gate, with two way voice but the doorbell-cam finally gives us a way to see who is at the gate. Biggest challenge was boosting the Wi-fi signal, but once that was solved it provides great service.

This is definitely an incomplete product. The camera works about half the time. No recordings of any kind yet. Connection issues even with new Apple router, very high speed internet (100MB) and excellent signal strength.

Best "smart" Doorbell available today

I tried SkyBell and it just never worked right always down 50% of the time. So I switched to August smart Doorbell and haven't looked back. Works consistently, build quality is better than the skybell, and Support is US based not in some foreign country. Highly recommend it if you haven't bought one or are on the fence or thinking of switching from a competitor.

Loving this doorbell cam so much. I have the silver one and I like how low profile it is compared to some of the other brands out there. I enjoy the Live view feature just when I randomly want to check what's going on, as it gives a wide angle and shows me what's happening in the entire front of the house. I recommend this product.
