Best movie EVER!

The Avatar movie is amazing. It has something for everyone - a love story, war between different "beings", awareness of the environment. The amazing graphics - the avatar's eyes, and the fact that you can identify easily each avatar as a particular actor/actress - the detail is phenomenal! It is best seen on a large screen TV if you have that option - and bring a friend!!

Overall, the plot of Avatar was straightforward: Na'vi are here, kill them if they come after you, and get to their tree to harvest good crystals. Simple and basic. Through the story, there were multiple subplots, but only one of them truely lasted the movie (Jake's "Becoming one of them" plot). The others were very short lived and in one or two cases, seemingly rushed. If they extended any of the plots longer, however, it would have drawn away from the finale of the movie itself.
The hype about the effects was no joke - Thinking the Matrix set the stage for effects was a good idea, but this raises the bar once again to a new standard. Mixing effect with live action was an interesting choice for the movie, but it was pulled extremely well from a viewer standpoint. There are so many situations where you have to ask yourself "Is this live or effect," and you're not sure. Multiple parts of the plant life and combat scenes had me question how much of it was truely effect or live. I wondered to myself after the movie how much of that they tried to replicate in real life, especially the later fight scenes.
In the end, though, the movie did what it should - Drove me to watch it all the way through without stopping, and then want more at the end, even though it could have been finished. The thought of continuing the story is there, but even if they don't, it's a very satisfying conclusion to what it was. Two and a half hours from the start, I had many thoughts, questions, and ideas for other stories dealing with this, not to mention, questions of what happened, but none that had to be answered - More "What if" questions. All in all, a good thinking movie.
I highly recommend this to all viewers, especially sci-fi or action lovers. Although the start is a little slow to get going, it draws you in with sci-fi elements, leading up to the action scenes late. Truely, this will bring movies to a new level both on a technological level of creation and showing, but on the level of promotion and hype. I hope for another Avatar in the future, whether it comes or not, satisfied with the story I was given.

Avatar Bluray no frills

The movie is visually stunning. The story is a classic tale of good vs. evil, and "Pocohontas" for the 21st century. The hype before the movie was released was that James Cameron claimed to achieve a breakthrough in video computer graphics technology that would revolutionize how movies are made. That was a pretty bold claim. After seeing the movie at the theater first in 2-D, and then again in 3-D (twice!), I became a believer. I was so convinced by what my eyes saw, that I thought Zoe Saldana in her role as Neytiri could have been nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress (no kidding)! Maybe that will be the break through when actors receive Oscar awards for their CGI character performances. But c'mon, a bluray without special features left me feeling a little short changed.

I have a small but experienced collection of BD movies and Avatar takes the cake in both picture and sound. The Disc is purposely void of all previews and studio logos in order to use as much room on the disc to make this movie the best movie experience you have ever seen. When you pop it in, it goes straight to the main menu. Only quarell I have is that there is no special features to satisfy the geek in me. I would prefer to not re-purchase the movie when the ultimate edtion of the movie is released, but more than likely, I will because I would love to see the process of making the 3D effects. And in addition to the movie, I recommend the soundtrack as well. James Horner did great job on it.

Loved the movie in the theater with 3D. Was a hold out and saw it late. Became a believer and bought the Blu Ray on other customer's recommendations even though I have a DVD only. Son has PS3. &I'm sure I'll get a Blu Ray soon enough. Went and made my mom c it right away on her giant flat screen HDtv w/Blu Ray. She loved it as well and she had no desire to see it. Well worth the little extra I paid for the Blu Ray. Have a rewards certificate and it's that much cheaper. ;) Wish they hadn't put it out without the extras. But I'm sure they are doing it to get more bucks with a collector's addition put out later to make us buy it twice.

We were reluctant to purchase as we were not sure if this would be the same experience without the 3-D effect. I am so glad we bought it. From the opening menu you are blown away by the detail and color of this movie. The best part is being able to experience this from your own living room.
This was great in the movies and overwhelming. Watching this at home allows you to see the little things the big screen makes difficult to watch. The story, the cinematography and the sound make this one great reason to own blu-ray.

Avatar - Art, New Technology or Just a Video Tape"

I loved the movie, found the artwork and CGI effects fantastic. It came across on our big screen TV in vivid detail and color. The story however was a little weak and offered nothing new in fictional creativity other than the story's environment. For the market that the movie was targeted for, it was an excellent piece of cinematic marketing and scored a bullseye with the viewing public. For myself although I enjoyed it, it left me a little on the "okay, that was good" side but I don't think any Oscars should be earned here. It did, however, give me a whole new appreciation for Cats and have me questioning my prior beliefs in what Cat behavior and social structure meant as I watch my two cats watching Avatar with my wife and me.

I have developed an uncanny addiction to this movie. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps because I first saw it in 3D, and it was my first 3D movie experience at nearly 30 years old. The movie is incredibly well written, well cast, the effects and technology are mind boggling. You feel a sense of connection to the characters and the world around them. I could go on and on and on about it, but instead I refer you to the box office charts for this movie and let the numbers do the talking.

Movie was great. Looked spectacular, sound was amazing. Only downside is that the plot is basically a grown up version of the Disney movie "Ferngully". Although it differs in several respects, so it is still very interesting. Amazing attention to detail in the environment Avatar is set in. Alien language sounds real, not just a bunch of random clicks or odd noises. Plant life looks well thought out, which is important for a plot that is heavily tied to being in tune with nature.

What to admire more? The eveloping DTS HD surround sound or the stunning vibrancy of the 1080P transfer? The answer is the story. Few effects laden films these days can be watched as if the visual and sound effects aren't the enitre point. Of course, the technical virtuosity of the film is impressive, but as each scene unfolds, the effect is to engage you more fully into an enthralling tale of love, survival, and the cost of progress when it must come at any price.

Blueray is the Best

This was the best picture from a Blueray disk I've ever seen. Some scenes actually looked 3-D without the funky glasses!
What impressed me even more was the fact that Best Buy provided each customer purchasing Avatar on Blueray with a hand-out that contained the information necessary to upgrade their Blueray players to show this movie. Providing customer service before you need it? What a novel concept!

From the color, to the animation, to the sound, to the story the whole movie was fantastic. I had previously thought the new Star Trek was as good as it got for sci fi movies, well guess again. My new plasma tv made the colors unbelievable and the realistic. Whatever you can spend to upgrade your audio and video equipment will be richly rewarded when you view this movie!

I love this movie. I think it has a great plot and great characters.
The BluRay itself is remarkable for the way it doesn't force you to watch previews (there are none) and will ask you if you want to resume where you left off even after taking the disc out and shutting the player off (at least my panasonic player does this and doesn't do this with any other disc).

Storywise, Avatar's storyline has been told many times pretty much since "civilization" began........somebody had something that somebody else wanted, and no pain was spared in getting it away from them. No matter the century, the story goes on, and Avatar simply moves it to somewhere in the future and tells it in a most spectacular way! Awesome!

After watching this in theaters, with the torment of the 3D glasses and the headache, I couldn't wait to watch Avatar in Blu-ray. It would have been nice to have a digital copy included with the Blu-ray/DVD bundle so you could play this movie anywhere.
This is a must own for high def fanatics. Forgo the simulated 3D flavor of this film should it ever get released, you will miss all the detail this movie is all about.
Just remember...3D movies didn't workout a few decades ago, it is just a fad.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen! Great story along with amazing visuals can make it seem like a wonderful Utopia. The Blu-ray disc brings this fantasy world even closer to real life. Blu-rays don't scratch and come with a dvd copy. Just wanted to be able to explore some special features, but there isn't any. Great music also.

This is one of the best movies that I have seen so far on the Blu Ray format. The special effects in this movie is awesome. I can imagine what it must be like in 3D based on the quality of the Blu Ray version. It is a must buy for anyone who collects and maintains their own movie library. You will end up watching it over and over again.

I almost felt like I was sitting in the IMAX theater again while watching this movie. Avatar is a definate must have for Blu-Ray. The stunning graphics and quality have to be watched in blu-ray or else you do not get the full effect of the movie. This is an amazing movie and I think Blu-Ray delivers the quality that this movie deserves.
