Classic Sci-Fi Film by Classic Sci-Fi Director

Stop hitting on this movie people! I know it is not the best, but when you see movies with absolutely no story and thought, you don’t shoot them up. Despite the criticism surrounding this movie, I believe it to be above average and while it might not be a must see, science fiction fanatics will love it and the movie lover will appreciate it.
This movie starts off a bit slow to some but it seems to be necessary to get connected a little better to a few of the characters because of the fact that in the latter half of the movie they are normally in their avatar bodies. Some might say that this film is a space edition of Dances With Wolves, while they are similar, you have to take into account other themes in the film, and that this was originally to be done about fifteen years ago before Dances With Wolves. This film cannot be accused of not being colorful and creative visually. The new 3D technology adds to the experience and almost makes it worth watching on its own. Speaking of colors, the story is very green, almost fanatical at points, but it seems that is the only way of making points in this modern era where no one actually thinks but instead searches the web for the answer. Other topics discussed behind the curtain would be things like respect of human lives, racism maybe, Native Americans, and religion, but I am sure there are others I have forgotten.
I might sound too critical of the film for liking it so, but I liked it and recommend it to anyone who believes they can take it as is and not want something out of it that it is not. I had to give it lower stars on the plot because it had elements that could seem like they were stolen from other movies, and a bit lower on acting because it wasn't the actual faces of the actors, and poor on extras because this edition of the movie does not have extras.

A step closer to the future of film

Avatar was the highest grossing film to date. If you haven't seen it, watch it. If you own a HD television/blu ray, buy it. James Cameron knew many years back what he wanted to do with Avatar, but he had to wait for the technology to catch up with his ideas. The technology used to make this movie was beyond anything we've seen in special effects until Avatar. It's a new, exciting experience that truly was like nothing I've ever seen before. Predictable?-Yes, simplistic plot?-Yes. Avatar is not The Shawshank Redemption, people! I'm sick of hearing people say how "bad" the plot was. It's a good vs. evil kind of movie, but no one complained about Spiderman. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen it, grab a copy and enjoy the film for what it is.
And to the person who said something about wanting their blu ray movie in "Full Screen"-you're referring to a 1:33:1 ratio (a square). You do realize that to have a "full screen" movie they chop of the sides and zoom in, lowering the quality of picture? When HD tvs came out with the 16x9 screen the industry was already moving on to 1:78:1, and now they're more commonly doing films 2:35:1. The reason is that the movies keep getting wider as if the film is happening around you instead of inside a little frame in front of you. If you want your blu ray movies to fill out the entire screen left to right, top to bottom go ahead and drop $8000 or more in a cinematic view LCD or plasma with a 2:35:1 aspect ratio.

A must-have movie

This is such an amazing movie and is definitely worth owning if you have a blu-ray player. I own many blu-ray discs and none look as amazing as this or help me show off my sound system as good as this one does. It's hard to believe that considering how new this is to our world being CG graphics and looking sooo amazing that people will try and compare this to hand-drawn animations like Pocahontis and Smurfs. Either way, I do not see the comparison. Avatar is a movie of it's own.
People need to stop giving this a bad review because it's the 2d version. Nowhere on the box does it say it is 3d. These reviews are to review the product, not what you wish they would have released.
Buyers should know what they are buying... and review accordingly. Nobody tried to mislead anyone by saying there were extras or this is in 3d.
Overall after seeing the movie in IMAX 3D three times and then watching it at home in 2D it was still an amazing experience. I do not at all regret making this purchase.

A Must-Have Blu-Ray DVD

I know there is a lot of talk, especially on other websites like Amazon, about not purchasing this Blu-Ray disc because it is only the theatrical release and not the director's cut which will contain 20 to 40 extra minutes. At this price, which I was able to get for $15.99 at Best Buy, it definitely brought back great memories of seeing it in the theater. If you have friends or family members that have not yet seen it, this is a must-have for your collection.
An outstanding direction, cinematography, CGI effects, sound quality is superb, and we live in the day and age when studios are putting out the theatrical release first and then following it up 6 to 9 months later with an extended release. The same thing is happening with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but without having to invest in a hefty price for three movies, and then upgrading down the road when the director's cut is released, if you have even an introductory home entertainment system, this is a fantastic movie to show it off. You can always buy the extended edition when it comes back and give this one away for a gift or sell it on eBay. Why wait that long to enjoy such a great movie? I have watched it now three times over the past week and I see and notice something different every time from the special effects, to the dialogue, to the symbolism of the movie. James Cameron is one of the best directors out there and if you could combine Jurassic Park, Titanic, and Dances with Wolves, you would get this outstanding love story that includes both action, symbolism, that takes place on the planet of Pandora. Since I had purchased my HDTV, and a Blu-Ray player and hooked it up with a wonderful Pioneer receiver, I have been busy replacing my DVDs with Blu-Ray. Out of the 50+ Blu-Ray movies that I own this would be in my top five.
I'm not sure how to upgrade my firmware on the Samsung Blu-Ray player yet so I was not able to take advantage of the second disc, but the movie played beautifully and without a problem. Enjoy!

OK, I SAW THIS MOVIE AT WORK ON THE 3-D SAMSUNG LED C7000 SERIES 55"....I WAS SOLD AFTER SEEING THE GRAPHICS DURING THE NIGHT SCENES WHERE EVERYTHING SEEMS TO GLOW AS IF THERE WAS A BLACK LIGHT. AWESOME! I OWN A 6000 SERIES 40" LED, AND IT WAS A MUST HAVE! NEVER SEEN IT IN MOVIE THEATERS BUT WAS TEASED BY OTHER EMPLOYEES ON HOW GOOD IT WAS AT IMAX THEATERS. IT'S A LONG ENOUGH MOVIE, I WOULDN'T HAVE MINDED IT BEING LONGER THOUGH LOL THE BEGINNING DRAGGED A LIL TINY BIT, I FELT THEY SHOULD'VE EXPLAINED MORE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MAIN CHARACTERS BROTHER. OH WELL....IT WAS AKWARD AT FIRST GETTING USED TO THE HUMAN AND NAVI SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH BUT THAT'S WHAT MADE THE STORYLINE GREAT, THAT IT KEPT YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. IF I WAS A MOVIE RATER, IT'S 5 OUT OF 5 STARS, BUT LUCKILY FOR YOU, I'M JUST A HOME THEATER SPECIALIST LOL OK, TAKE CARE AND ENJOY! WATCH IT ON A LED TV IF POSSIBLE! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

I went to my local Best Buy to purchase a Blu-ray copy of Avatar today. As the woman was bagging my purchase, I noticed she put a card (the size of a business card) with the Avatar logo as well as the characters on it in my bag. I didn't bother looking at the card until I got home. The card basically said to go online and register my copy of Avatar to receive a coupon for the Fall 2010 Version. Thats when I realized that the copy that was released today was just the movie. NO SPECIAL FEATURES! Do they honestly want me to wait until the fall to buy this again just for the special features? This is, so far, the highest grossing movie of all time. Do they really want the fans to buy this twice to get even more money? WTF?!

I paid to see this movie five times in the theater. This was the first 3D movie I've seen in years. I'm swatting at the bugs in the theater until I realized it was part of the movie. I was emotionally attached to the characters and was truly sad when the movie was over as I wanted to see more. There was no noticeable seam from CGI to real-life acting. I saw no hidden message about the American Military and anyone that sees one needs to learn how to relax and enjoy a M-O-V-I-E! James Cameron did an outstanding job!

Perhaps the best motion picture --- EVER

AVATAR may be THE PERFECT motion picture --- and --- from first release to second release to third release it simply gets better and better and better. The script flows seamlessly --- without even the slightest momentary lapse. The cast is nothing less than perfectly suited. Computer animation is absolutely breathtaking. Directing, sound engineering, score and editing combine to create an utterly flawless visual and auditory experience. AVATAR is truly the ultimate motion picture experience for those who are willing to suspend reality for the purpose of being supremely entertained again and again and again. Five stars are not enough.

Best movie I have seen in a long time

this movie is amazing. My wife and I both loved it. I was surprised that she even liked it because she is never into sci-fi movies. This kind of tells you how good it is. We had seen it twice in theaters (once in 3d and once in 2d) and now we bought it the day it came out. I will say for some people thinking its not good in 2d, dont worry because we thought that 2d looks way better than 3d. With the 3d it gets out of focus at points and it really draws your attention away from the story.
After comparing the blu ray to the dvd I can easily say blu ray is TONS better. Normally I dont notice a hole lot of difference with some movies on my 1080p set but this movie you will notice. The dvd is all blurry and looks horrible. Some points you cant even make out peoples faces.
I never spend more than 15 dollars on a movie but this is such an amazing movie that I was more than willing to spend 22 bucks on it. I would highly suggest this movie to everyone.

Great story if you look between the lines

This movie had a great storyline that went over many people heads. Some of the plot lines are: how barbaric humans really are to the earth and living things, how we are dependent on oil , how us humans just go to war without thinking of the total cost of life both human and environmental. This movie was like nothing ever made. It's being released on EARTH DAY that would be a big hint of the major issue the movie illustrates.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL BLU-RAY DISC

I can't believe how visually stunning this film is. What a feast for the senses! As far as 3-d goes, I didn't miss it for one second. I loved the choice of aspect ratio, and felt that it added a great deal to the larger-than-life feel of this movie.
This movie blew up my 5.1 like no other! The Earth shook , and I think my ears are still bleeding!
As far as the movie itself goes, ( Plot, screenplay, etc.) I think people are being far too critical. This is escapism people. It is equally as good if not superior to other films of it's genre. But like any movie that does gang-busters at the box office, it's impossible to please everyone.
If you are a Blu-ray fanatic like me, this is a MUST own addition to your collection. Kudos to James Cameron and 20th Century Fox for putting out a truly remakable product.

This movie although I haven't had a chance to see the Blu-ray, as we have bothm even in DVD, it was great. The scenery, the movie itself, although it is at times a little hard to follow on the first viewing of it, but I think the more you watch it, the more you will understand. I am sure that the movie will be more spectacular on Blu-Ray, although I bet it was fantastic on IMAX, wish I saw it. Couldn't have watched a better movie. Good Job Cameran, I think it was a shame it did not win Best Picture, but at least it came runner up.

Ok; I'm really very tired of people given a review prior to even viewing the movie and/or complaining about features that they already know are clearly not provided with the movie!!
This is a GREAT movie and plays perfectly on my Samsung without any issues as do all BD movies, though some take a few to load into the memory, which I believe some of the new players resolve that lag time.
If you like a movie, just get it and enjoy it even knowing that down the road there will be a special cut, director's cut, collector's edition, anniversary edition, etc. The point is if you like a movie and want to see it again and enjoy it without all the unwarranted criticism than go buy it and enjoy!!! Otherwise, if you don't have anything good to say, say nothing at all!!!!!

GREAT SCI-FI MOVIE

Its good if you like special effects, lots of action, stunning visuals,ex.. like most sci-fi movies good visuals poor story line and rather simplistic. more of a futuristic cowboys and indians.I would compare it to star wars type movie. If it had a complicated story line your head would explode trying to take it all in. A little on the long side could have trimed a lot of sygorni weavers part out. wasn't needed in story. But all and all good to watch dont try to over analize it, just enjoy. maybe theres realy no message in the movie (earth friendly) just part of the story line, disney didn't make it. Its a high def movie if you dont have a high def tv dont complain about the bars on the top and bottom you were ment to see it all.

Just to keep it short and sweet.. If your a Audiophile or Home theater person like myself, This is a must buy , no matter what.. The CD ( obviously ) is top notch and the audio and LFE ( bass ) is full, plentiful , and not overdone.. Just a perfect blend overall
The movie is, eh.. ok, cheesy acting and writing at times but tolerable. Its a good plot to the story, even tho im not into the sci-fi type movies. If your not into the movie hypt, have blu ray, or a good HT audio system , this might be a rental, but if your wanting to see how powerful blu ray picture and audio quality are , pick it up, no questions

I'm a big fan of sci-fi so I have enjoyed the movie, however this may not be the case with everyone. The plot is fairly simple and is a rehash or variation of stories seen in other movies. The real reason to get Avatar is for its visuals which are simply amazing. I would recommend renting this before buying to judge whether its a movie that you would want in your collection.

What can i say about this film other than its fantastic. almost everyone has seen it. its such a good movie! another amazing movie from a great director. the reason this is having such little special features is so it can have more storage capacity for higher resolution in video and sound. sure this one isnt gonna be in 3d but so what. shoulda seen it in theaters or wait till november for the 3d release. i care about the movie. i dont plan on getting it in 3d. its not for me. ill stick with regular blu ray for now
