I love historical movies, whether it is nonfictional or fictional. Add romance to it and I'm usually sold on the movie. This movie, while I do not know the exact history behind claimed children and their up bringing, raising some very interesting questions about treatment of people during the time period as well as being the one caught between 2 worlds. Belle is born of an interracial relationship but is claimed by her father and raised in an English nobleman's home. Issues, including how she dines with family, how she is recognized in the home compared to outside people, and her uncle's judgement of a case involving issues that concern her are all brought up in the movie. I love the passion of the characters as they fight for what they believe in while looking out for the other people involved. Plus....who doesn't love a good love story with a happy ending. :)

I had planned to see this picture in the theater, but typical limited release by the studio kept me from seeing it where it should be seen. However I knew that when the blu ray disc was released I would buy it anyway, since period dramas are my favorite. Besides you can't go wrong with a movie that has Tom Wilkinson in it - plus Gugu Mbatha-Raw was perfect casting as Belle and a big bonus for me! Although the movie plays out pretty much as expected, I don't really care because I still loved it anyway.
Keira Knightley - Jane Austin movies are more emotional and extravagant compared to this, but maybe keeping it more straight forward works better for this one. If you like this movie I have two other recommendations for you:
Young Victoria & A Royal Affair (subtitled) * Highly recommended!!!

This reminds me of Beauty and the Beast the Disney movie. How Belle is seen as an outcast in public but behind doors with just family around, she's considered beautiful. The movie gives you a surprise ending. Belle being half black and white in society was considered ugly and her half sister who was all white is considered pretty but in the ending it's Belle who gets married and not the sister who is all white.

The movie Belle was far better than 12 years a slave. The story is based on historical facts (be sure and watch the special features).
Belle is a half white/half Jamacian mix. She was raised in 18th century England alongside her white cousin.
The girls are contrasted when they reach their time to be "presented" as eligible. The question arises as to who is really a slave to their culture: a half white lady with a modest fortune who does not need to marry since she was monetary means, or her middle class cousin who must marry a rich man (not necessarily out of love) in order to continue the lifestyle she is accustomed to.

It is was a great film written about a female of mixed race raised in 18th Century England and the courage and kindness she displayed in the face of painful racism. It is rare to see such a story put on film even if it is true. The actresses and actors gave flawless performances. I have made this film a part of my library of historical events.

This is a great movie of a historically significant story which lays the foundation for the anti-slavery movement and is an important piece that is part of the civil rights struggle to be known today.
Excellent acting, cinematography and costumes.

One of my favorite films of 2014. It's a beautiful period piece that touches on a subject that is not readily addressed in this time period. It's a beautiful love story with a historical background that is a must see for the whole family!

Found the movie both sad and uplifting. Sad because the story is true, uplifting because all it takes is a few people to change unjust laws. I've watched the film several times with friends. Had many conversations about the film's content.

While I am not too into romantic dramas, I did appreciate the historical value this had to offer with the social classes look into race and wealth. The beginning of the fall of slavery in England is well portrayed with the trial of the insurance company trying to prove the ship's captain acted fraudulently in throwing slaves overboard to make money on a property claim.

I had to wait all most 30 minutes for the store employees to find the movie but it was worth. It is a very good movie and what's even better is that I had a coupon for my birthday that reduced the price.

I really wanted this film for my collection. You all shipped quickly, but I thought it was too expensive. $5 to 12.99 is enough to pay for a dvd, because tax and shipping is too much.

It was a great movie. I love, love stories. It was amazing to see how a bi-racial daughter of a slave and a Caucasian aristocrat is treated among her extended family. and society. I liked the fact that she stood on what she believed in.
