Working OK now, painful setup with LG OLED TV

It is working OK now (Dec. 2017). I followed the standard setup procedure which was long and involved. You also have to set up an account with TiVo and wait a day for "approval" to get guide data that runs about $15 per month and has a big penalty if you cancel within the first year. It was not clear that things were progressing properly during setup (black screen several times). Once I got the broadcast TV working I tested the streaming apps like NETFLIX and You/Tube. Testing these on HDR programs locked up the BOLT with a noisy solid color screen alternating with a black screen (video would not sync up). I had to power down and restart the system to get it running again. I got a replacement BOLT and it did the same thing. In the end I was able to get this fixed by turning on a "video signal pass through" feature under video settings. Even with it now working videos on YouTube play for a couple seconds, then I get a black screen for a couple seconds, and then it finally plays the rest of the video. Tech support provided a tip with a magic key sequence that would reset the box without unplugging it but did not help with figuring out the "video pass through" setting. Every other streaming box I have works around an HDR file automatically downgrading it to a non HDR. The BOLT locked up without special settings on an HDR file (it's recommended "auto" setting for resolution does not work with my LG TV). The voice control does work well on mine. The skip feature to jump over commercials is very nice (not all shows support it). I have poor vision so the use of small fonts various places is irritating when there is plenty of room to use larger fonts. This was especially disappointing since YouTube videos of an older TiVo interface had nice large fonts. I would still recommend it to a friend because it is still a much better interface than my Froniter DVR and the issues I had will probably be fixed with firmware upgrades. I do wish the BOLT would play HDR10 and DolbyVision but for now I will have to use other streaming options for viewing real HDR content.

I am a returning Tivo user and I am loving being back in the fold. Going the Tivo route costs a bit more but I feel it is worth it. Pro’s - In this new version I feel all of the apps l (Netflix, Amazon etc.) look as good or better than a Roku premium unit. Which I am also converting from. The only downside is HBO Go is not supported on Tivo with XFinity for some reason. Very strange. Then there is the Tivo interface and features, all premium and work as you would expect from a premium product. My wife and I are big fans. The Skip feature is really nice. All interface, FF, Rewind and playback features are silky smooth. Con’s - really it is price. We have some monthly savings returning Comcast gear but even so with the hardware purchase and Tivo monthly cost it is still slightly more expensive. Plus the HBO Go piece I mentioned if you are a Comcast customer. We are very happy with the new TiVo’s though even at the premium price.

Basically was a quick and easy setup (although see my review for VOX Mini's). Recordings are very good - can't tell difference between live and recorded. You can record up to 4 shows at the same time, and even view what is being recorded. Great for not catching the start of a show but seeing almost live. Guide and setting up recordings nice and easy to do. Skipping commercials works well. Somewhat more than I'd like to pay for the Tivo service. Annual sub is less than paying each month. They offer a lifetime sub equiv to about 3.5 years annual rate, but this does not have the warranty.

    Best Tivo Box Ever

Performance is excellent, much faster than a Roamio. This is especially noticeable in apps like Netflix. I now use Tivo Bolt for Netflix rather than my Apple TV 4K--mostly because of the awful Apple touch remote. Although the new GUI interface (referred to as Hydra) for the Tivo is clumsy, the voice control is excellent and more than makes up for it. This is the only voice control system I have found useful. My only complaint is that I can hear the whine of the fan on the Bolt when the room is quiet.

I have to admit I love saving money and the Tivo system allows you to do that. You can only have one subscription for $149 a year and purchase mini units for your other areas with no subscription, just the cost of the device. It works rather well in this fashion. My two gripes that don't give this 5 stars, one customer service. Had a billing dispute that took 2 months to resolve. The second is the speed of the process. I would gladly pay more money for the primary unit if they would be faster. Right now they keep updating the OS and making it more bloated. The only other item I would add that using Tivo remotely is a 50/50 proposition. When it works, it is amazing. However, there are a couple of caveats. Only works in WIFI mode and each time the boxes software gets updated, you have to register your phone. As I travel a great deal, only when I get to the hotel do I realize my Tivo won't work remotely and I HAVE TOO go back home to register. It can't be done outside of your home network.

Best DVR for anyone still with cable

I've been a Tivo user from the beginning. I love the interface. I bought a new one for my condo that still has cable included in the HOA, so there is no reason to "cut the cord" here. The Spectrum cable box & DVR are horrifying, so off I went to Best Buy in Melbourne to buy this unit. My only gripe is Tivo wouldn't let me transfer one of my older unused lifetime subscriptions, but that is not a comment on the unit. It handles 4k, it has an incredible Netflix interface, WAY better than my Tivo Roamio! I'm not sure why people complain about the "new Tivo UI", I find it mostly superior. It's way faster than my Roamio, too. All in all a great product.... IF you still use cable,

I really like Mt Tivo Bolt. I was able to cut out two Tivo boxes when I added minis to this. The only problem is "handshake" on start up.

We had an older version and this TIVO is definitely better. It was hard to transfer recordings from the old one to the new. They do not make this process easy. Once this was done I like the new one better except for the new interface which has large pictures instead of a list of recordings and is harder to use. With all that said, overall it works well and we are getting used to it.

If it wasn't for the need of a cable card, I would have given it at least one more star. Caveat Emptor - You won't get "On Demand" on this box, but you can download Showtime and HBO's app if you subscribe to the premium channels. With this box, you will need to pay Tivo their annual subscription fee.

A lot of people won’t believe that it’s worth it with paying a subscription for service, but if you ever try it, you won’t go back! No other boxes come close. And if you have cable, you don’t have to rent their DVR boxes, so really, it’s not more expensive. And if you buy the antenna only box, the service is half the price.
