I bought these for my home office. I auditioned the KEF Q350s as well. These were the best for my music preferences. I used 2 pairs of AudioQuest Rocket 11 speaker cables to bi-amp these. Bi-amping made a noticeable difference.
Home office setup:
Yamaha RX-730A receiver
Bluesound Node 2i
B&W 607 S2's
AudioQuest opticals, RCAs, and speaker cables

This review is for the Bowers& Wilkens (B&W) 607 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers. When I got the opportunity to review these speakers, I was very happy because I am a fan of Bowers & Wilkens. I will not, however, give these speakers special treatment or compare them to others. I will review these speakers on their own standing in how they perform listening to the music I like to listen to and watching movies I like to watch.
First impression:
My first impression of the B&W 607 S2 bookshelf speakers is that they are another high-quality speaker from B&W. Even though it is a smaller bookshelf speaker, it has a clean, solid, and attractive build to them. The speaker grills are held in place with magnets. I prefer magnets to post mounts as you are much less likely to damage the grills with magnets. These magnets, however, aren’t as strong as I think they need to be. Sitting on a shelf or desk they will do just fine, but if you move them, the grills might come off. To be safe, just remove the grill covers when moving the speakers.
Quality:
These may be bookshelf speakers, but they are high-quality speakers. The cabinets are solid, and the speaker connections are high-quality strapped binding posts allowing you to bi-amp them if you so choose. While I like the idea of bi-amped speakers, I felt at first that it seems a bit much for bookshelf speakers. But after listening, these B&W’s provide such nice sound that I don’t believe it would be a waste if you were to bi-amp them.
Test Setup:
My current system is a 5.1 with B&W 685 S2 speakers on B&W STAV 24 steel speaker stands and a B&W HTM6 Center speaker. My receiver is a Denon AVR-X1400H and all interconnect and speaker cables are from Tributaries Cables.
For the test, I replaced my front B&W 685 S2 speakers with the 607 S2 speakers and left the others in place. I played movies and listened to a wide variety of music. All movies were streamed with Netflix and Amazon Prime and the music was streamed with Apple Music through an Apple TV device.
Performance:
The test began watching movies. I chose movies that had deep sub-level sounds and punch. I did this because the smaller drivers will have a tougher time with lower frequencies than mids and highs.
I watched The Expendables, Inception, Jurassic World, and The Avengers. The speakers did very well with all three movies. The highs were crisp and clear. The mids were full, tight, and had punch, and the lows varied depending on the source. The lows were clean and never distorted and reproduced the quality they were fed. The only caveat was the speakers required a higher volume level to wake up the lows. Even so, they had excellent sound.
Next, I moved to music. The music test was more extensive because I wanted to see how the speakers performed across a wide range of genres. I started with Philip Glass, Ludovico Einaudi, and Efrem Bergman on the piano. I am not a classical music fan, but I really do like these three artists on the piano. The speakers performed beautifully with these piano pieces. These were piano solos, so there weren’t any additional instruments.
Next, I moved to Randy Newman’s Land of Dreams and Sail Away albums. This was the first time in my review that the speaker really opened up. The quality of sound was amazing across the complete frequency range, and you could really hear the texture in Randy Newman’s voice. There was no need here to raise the volume to get the lower frequencies to fill in.
Following Newman, I listened to Dire Straits’ Love Over Gold. This is one of my favorite albums still to this day. The sound was even better with this recording. The speaker was regularly hitting lows much easier than when watching movies.
Next, I moved on to heavy metal to see how the drivers stood up. I listened to music from Anthrax, AC/DC, Faith No More, The White Stripes, Gideon, Headnoise, Iron Maiden, Suicidal Tendencies, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Nazareth, The Vandals, and Officer Negative. From rock through punk to Metal, these speakers held up and produced great sound.
Lastly, I listened to higher-energy electric music and hip-hop. I chose the B-52’s, Beastie Boys, The Black Eyed Peas, Black Knight, Digital Underground, George Clinton, Killer Mike, HOPP,
LL Cool J, Gorillaz, NF, Tedashi, Trip Lee, The Prodigy, and Sir Mix-a-Lot. In all cases, the speakers sounded great and the sub-level performance was outstanding for a 6.5” driver.
Conclusion:
The B&W 607 S2 Anniversary edition bookshelf speakers produce wonderful sound. The highs are crisp and clear without any hiss. The mids are clean, full, and provides punch without distortion. The lows were clean, tight, and never distorted at higher volume levels. Throughout the entire review, my ears never felt fatigued with these speakers. There was a lot of music coming out of the 6.5” driver. I expect good sound from any speaker produced by Bowers & Wilkens, but these are some of the best sounding bookshelf speakers I have ever heard. These are true audiophile speakers.
The speakers did a better job with music than it did with movies. I think this most likely has to do with the quality of the source. They still sounded good with movies, but they sounded exceptional with music. I highly recommend these speakers.
Final thoughts:
The thing to remember is that these are bookshelf speakers. They are not meant to fill a large room or be primary speakers in a home theater. They work best in a smaller space because there is only so much that a 6.5” driver can do. That being said, I believe these speakers could work in a larger room or media center with the addition of a subwoofer, such as the B&W ASW610. It is really impressive how much music these small speakers produce by themselves.

Yes, I know—the title is obvious to those who are used to higher-end audio equipment. The reality is, there is no comparison between a run-of-the-mill bluetooth speaker and a finely tuned vented speaker like the 607 S2 Anniversary Series speakers from Bowers and Wilkins. And so you may be asking—why bring up bluetooth speakers? After all, the S2 speakers are intended as proper stereo speakers, perhaps in an existing surround-sound environment. But, if you already have a surround sound system, I don’t know that you’d be looking for just two speakers to add. Instead, the S2 could be used as a standalone pair, provided you have the proper equipment to pass the audio through them. Personally, I added these as a pair of stereo speakers on my desk, which provides incredible quality audio during work and play.
This short review assumes you have the equipment required in addition to the speakers…just keep in mind, you will need more than just these speakers to get things working.
We live in a world where music comes either from our car stereos or from a relatively small speaker sitting somewhere in a room, connected by bluetooth. I have countless bluetooth speakers, some good and some not so good. I have a decent soundbar as well that provides a full sound when immersive is required—but it is far from the sound that I found the S2 can pump out. Also, there is something to say for stereo sound, which is something you don’t quite get with a bluetooth speaker.
I have about 20 songs on a playlist that I run through when testing speakers and headphones alike. My standard workflow goes like this: start a song, listen for a bit, move on to the next song. I know these songs well, and have historically found that they are representative of enough styles and genres to provide a decent rounded listening experience. But that workflow changed significantly when I tested the 607 S2 speakers.
For starters—the acoustic refinement that was done in the design of these speakers make for a very immersive experience. They are smaller speakers, so they didn’t look too big on my desk—and the output coming from the two areas on each desk didn’t sound like it was only coming from those areas; instead, the desk itself became a speaker, projecting a wall of sound that didn’t have a single point of origin. As I’ve gotten used to a standard bluetooth speaker, this was a refreshing and enjoyable reminder of how much I love high quality audio.
When I began working through my playlist, I didn’t play a short excerpt and move on. Instead, I sat and I listened. The quality of the sound was so good and so immersive that I was lost in the experience. This hasn’t happened to me in quite some time.
I also learned things about my playlist. I found songs that are redundant in purpose and can therefore be removed. I found other songs that were unremarkable from an audio perspective, and I also found songs that had elements that I had never before heard. That is a testament to these speakers; these are the songs that I know better than all other songs.
It is worth mentioning (although should not be a deterrent) that the bass output of these speakers is not significant. The soundstage in general is phenomenal, but a good subwoofer connected through your receiver will make these speakers go even further. They do a fine job on their own, and they will certainly do the trick for light listening and everyday use, but these speakers are not designed to be supremely bass heavy. Mids and highs are no problem at all, thanks to the tweeters on each unit. Audio is clear, and elements of that audio is separate and audible as unique components of the larger sound.
The speakers look great, too, and the included (and optional) speaker covers are secured magnetically to the front…although I prefer leave them off.
This pair of speakers comes at a price—$700 to be exact. That’s not a small pill to swallow, but they sound incredible and if you’re heavily invested in your audio setup, I think these could be a good addition for you. I love them on my desk as my every day audio output—they look great, sound great, and are sure to last for many years to come.

When I first received these speakers, I was skeptical I was going to be satisfied with the sound of them because of the size. They seem to be on the small side but actually a really good bookshelf size. They would also make a good pair of rear home theater speakers.
The design of these speakers is minimalist. Meaning, a plain look. I like the magnetic removable grills and the screw less speaker mounting. Looking further, there is a bass port at the back and one of the included additions is a pair of foam port plugs that allow you to tone down the bass when using them in a bookshelf location. They are also equipped with two pairs of high quality gold plated binding posts. Why two pair? This is something that typically shows up on higher end speakers and allows each speaker channel to be driven separately by removing the shorting bar between the posts and using two speaker outputs for each speaker instead of just one. These are both really great features to add, especially on a pair of bookshelf speakers. My speakers are black and look nice with the grills removed. The mid-woofers are silver colored and look sharp.
I set these speakers on top of my floor standing speakers about eight inches from the wall and didn't need to use the port plugs and drove them with an Onkyo receiver in direct mode (meaning no other speakers were enabled, just the two B&W's). I listen to a wide variety of music, and I've used these speakers for several days now. When I first began listening to them I thought right away, the bass is on the thin side. The overall sound is clean and well balanced between the highs and lows. Music is not colored in any way and the sound you hear is just very dependent on the way it was originally recorded. This is a huge plus. The benefit of this is, you can listen to them for a long time without tiring out your ears. Hearing the music as it was intended to be heard is something high end speaker designers strive for.
The real magic happened as I turned up the volume on them. It's then that the sound started to really shine. The bass became rich and supported the highs very well without becoming muddy or boomy. Sound pressure levels improved as well. The more I've listened to these speakers the less evident my original claim of thin bass became. They do recommend a break in period for the best sound, and that seems to be an accurate claim.
These are well designed, high end speakers and will be fine on speaker stands or bookshelves. They have no trouble delivering clean sound through all the volume levels that I put them through. As expected, the sound pressure levels drop significantly with lower volume, as does the bass, but the clarity remains. This improves with more use throughout the break in period. This is a fine pair of speakers and I look forward to listening to them for a good long time.
