Great Printer for a Great Price

This printer is a great value. Setting up the wifi was very painless. It could be a little quicker printing but it is still adequate. Toner cartridge lasts for a very long time. Highly recommended!
This printer takes the place of a Canon that (by design) uses color ink cartridges for all prints black and white or color. The Canon even uses ink on every wake up to "auto clean" itself. It would go through cartridges at breakneck speed. Steer clear of Canon!

The only problem that I have is that it failed to communicate wireless with my computer. I gave up in trying to set it up wireless and bought a cable. I now use it wired and it works perfectly. Excellent printer overall.

This is a great printer. You get a lot of bang for your buck. The print quality is fantastic. It is extremely easy to install the printer. I cannot think of a single thing about this printer that is negative. I am so impressed with this printer!!!

Should have stayed with HP Printers

Bought the HL-2170W thinking it would be a great portable wireless printer. However, if you're using a wireless connection to a router, you need access to the router to set up the printer so it only works at home, not at hotels where you connect wirelessly. That's a minor point. The big problem is the toner and drum cartridges $$$. The toner cartridge stops printing after 1000 pages or so. Found a bypass online to get it to continue and got another 1000 pages... what a ripoff letting the user only use half of the toner. Make the cartridge so you can keep printing until the quality fades... plus the drum unit $$$ needs to be replaced separately. Currently I'm fighting with "tricking" the printer into working now and then (at a hotel) until I can get home to Best Buy and get an HP printer to replace it... then in the trash it goes!

Brother product quality

Bought printer at NYC BB store around April 2009. Printer never left any marks on any pages while original temp toner cartridge was used. It lasted until about 2 weeks ago - midOct. Longer than expected. Purchased new cartridge for the Brother HL-2170W laser printer online from Inkjet Superstore. Had to contact Brother about how to get old toner cartridge/existing drum out and install new cartridge and existing drum into printer since company's data wasn't too clear about that activity. That was accomplished during phone chat with Brother customer service today.
Printed out several pages with new toner cartridge installed and four small ink marks appeared on left side of each page. Brother told me I would have to buy a new drum unit for the cartridge to get clean pages again!!!! Cost of small plastic drum: more than $100 or about my same special printer purchase price!!!
I may buy another printer from another company. Had a H-P laser printer before for more than 15 years.
Anybody else had such experience with Brother printers? BB service when I purchased printer was great.

It is an ok printer for the money. Never had any problems setting up on a lead mac machine and using bonjour to let my linux and other mac machines 'see' it. But once I replaced lead computer with windows pc, nothing works network-wise. Even connected direct to router via ethernet, still doesn't work. Good printer, IF, you connect via USB for ONE computer.

LOUD FOREVER

I just bought the updated version of this one, the dark gray HL-2270. I don't mind that the printing itself is loud, but then the machine stays on for about 15 minutes before it goes to sleep. The pre-sleep noise is what it so annoying...it's loud if your within 10 feet of it. Wish I'd bought the Samsung now. Printing quality is good, however.

Don't Buy This Printer

Worked great for a few months, then it constantly started displaying a "clean corona wire" print error. The suggested quick fix does not work. Brother support kept telling me I needed a new toner cartridge. After several more attempts at troubleshooting, it printed a few pages which were perfectly fine. (It did NOT need a new toner cartridge.). It prints a few pages, then the error message pops up again. I have to do their suggested troubleshoot routine about 5-20 times before it starts printing again. Only to have to go through the whole thing again after a few pages print. Incredibly frustrating. Brother will not take the printer back because they say it works just fine after the troubleshooting. I'm going to throw this away and start over with a HP.

Looked good on paper but was extremely difficult to set up. User manual was of no use ....would be a good, reasonably priced printer if set up procedures were easier. Purchase it if you are tech savvy ....stay away or hire someone if you are not.

Very Poor Printer--drinks printer cartridges!
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Would not recommend this printer. It touts about 3000 copies per cartridge when in reality it only produces about 300 (max.) copies per cartridge (even when set on economy mode). You'll spend a fortune in printer cartridges within the first month or two. I don't print that much and this thing has gone through 3 cartridges in the first two months at $45.00 a pop. It won't warn you when it is running low on toner, it will just stop printing in mid job. Then you have to run out and purchase another cartridge.
I have never written a product review but felt it was necessary to warn others about this product. I'm ready to toss this printer out and purchase something else that won't run me broke. It will not be something made by Brother.

BROTHER THE NEW MODELS!

I had Brother Printer from 5 years ago and they were super! The new ones like this are "GARBAGE"! The toner does not last long and unit just plain DIES 5 times sooner then the old style Brother Printers! Only reason I picked up new units is because BROTHER DOES NOT UPDAT DRIVES on the old uniots for Vista or Windows 7! TODAY I AM PUTTING 2 OF THE NEW STYLE PRINTERS IN THE GARABE CANS WHERE IT BELONGS! NEVER WILL I BUY A BROTHER PRINTER AGAIN AS IT IS JUST PLAN "GARBAGE"!
