Awesome All-Around Good Printer!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This printer is great! The Brother brand is one I am familiar with and would recommend. For its relatively inexpensive price point, this Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J895DW Wireless All-In-One Printer is definitely worth considering for all the many useful features it has to offer. Getting up and running was a piece of cake. Simply follow the directions in the handy Quick Setup Guide. The printer’s easy-to-use digital touch screen display will walk you through the setup procedure. Also worth noting is that a driver installation disk is included with the packing materials and Reference Guide (which I found to be quite helpful and thorough), for setting the printer up to a computer. Generally speaking, these days, more often than not, you have to go online to a company’s website to access the necessary downloads. That is not the case here. Brother has provided the required software. However, what I was most impressed with was how effortlessly it was to use this printer with the app, since I will mainly be using the printer with my mobile devices. The Brother iPrint&Scan App is done really well. I found myself truly enjoying trying out all its features. You can preview a copy before printing, which is quite useful; as well as, check on the machine’s status. Also, if the printer is left on, and you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you are able to operate the printer remotely from a desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet, while away from your home or office. Something else worth mentioning here, is that even if you don’t have a telephone landline, you can still use the mobile fax feature by using your cell phone number. Very handy! The printer’s compact design is comparable to a variety of home office printers of this type. But don’t let its size fool you. This Brother All-In-One Printer performs beautifully. For expediency of printing, there is a 150-sheet capacity paper tray; along with a bypass tray which can handle a variety of sizes and specialty papers, including photo paper. I found the quality of pictures printed with this Brother Printer, to be crisp, clear, and bright. As with other printers that I have owned and used, the printer does make noise during the printing cycle. There is a ‘Quiet Mode’ option, which seems to only slightly slow down how fast the printer prints when not using this. An optional service which may be of benefit to some, most especially those people who use their printer often and will need to purchase ink regularly, is ‘Brother Refresh’ - a feature which detects your usage patterns and will automatically place an order for replacement ink (or toner) to be shipped directly to your home or office. Overall, this Brother Work Smart Series MFC-J895DW Wireless All-In-One Printer is a well-made, solid piece of hardware. Being able to print, copy, scan (and even fax) from a mobile device is really useful, but when simply used as a regular desktop/laptop printer, it performs just as superbly. I highly, highly recommend!

Reliable home printer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a really good device for home office use. I'd give it four & a half stars, if that was an option. It was easy to set up. The enclosed guide gives the steps but some were unnecessary because the printer also guides the user through the setup process, by showing the steps and progress on the touch screen. This screen is also how the printer is used, rather than buttons. This machine can copy, print, and scan, and works as a fax machine if connected to a landline. It connects wirelessly to the home network, WiFi and computers, as well as mobile devices, although connecting to a network is not required. There's an app easily downloaded for mobile devices. The touch screen on the printer took a little getting used to, as it didn't seem as sensitive at first. There is software for the computer that can be downloaded, although when I did it immediately needed updating. This took longer than I expected, but should be a one time process. Printing is quick and the quality is great. As part of the setup you install 4 separate ink cartridges; these can be replaced individually as they run out. The printer tracks this for you, and will let you know when low. There's a replenishment service which will send replacement cartridges to you. With its compact design, it fit on the desk without taking up much space. It holds plenty of paper, and prints two sided as well. I had no problems using this, from my desktop and phone, and would recommend it as a good quality addition to a home or even a small business office. I had certain expectations for this as a Brother product, and was not disappointed.

Good versatile device
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A very good machine overall. The only downside is that it cannot scan two-sided documents, though few in its class can.

excels with none but is competent in all functions
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really haven’t had a Brother brand printer since the dot matrix days (not talking the reboot character), but enough with dating myself. The Brother All in One MFC-J985DW printer is a compact, capable multifunction device. First thing I noticed when unboxing the unit, it is compact, it seems to have a footprint barely bigger than an 8x11 piece of paper. A refreshing change from the Multifunction printers I have been purchasing for the last three generations which are big and have been getting progressively less reliable (from a brand known for making high end cameras). In any case back to the Brother All in One MFC-J985DW, after unboxing I filled the tray cartridge with standard 8x11 paper. It was slightly confusing as the paper goes below another area where photo size paper can be loaded. Then I installed the four “INKvestment high yield ink cartridges,” which seemed small, we’ll see down the road what page counts they yield. Checked prices of new OEM ink online and prices seem reasonable. As for setup, the printer was fairly easy to connect my WiFi network. A Windows 10 PC easily detected the printer connected to my network. My iOS devices were also able to connect via AirPrint (although as I write this the connection via AirPrint seems to have disappeared). Printing was easy, providing decent looking output quickly. Documents are clear, a photo did not look as I expected when printed as a full 8x10, it was more artful looking than photographic. Could be the source resolution of the photo, regardless I do not print many photos at home and frankly would not expect much in this area from the printer. Scanning was straightforward, from the front panel I was able to scan an image directly to my PC where it automatically showed up in the Windows Fax and Scan app. I also setup the scan to a cloud service, in this case my OneDrive, there are also options for DropBox, Google Drive and Evernote. Also there is a simple Automatic Document feeder for scanning one sided pages (ADF capacity 20). I did not get a chance to use this feature. Overall this All in One printer does just about everything you would want to do, all at an acceptable level. It excels in none but is competent in all. Pros: - Small footprint/size - Fairly reasonably priced - Cloud services connectivity Cons: - Print quality is decent, but not the best - No Ethernet connectivity, Wifi only - Ink cartridges seem small, not sure I will get near the page count expected - Small buttons on the front panel are difficult to use with my big paws

Feature rich but long term cost too high for some.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Another all in one in a sea of endless competition. To me, regardless of the price point, manufactures have to make a printer be the top of the top in all categories to separate themselves from the competition. In this case, Brother tries but misses the mark. First, you have to set the proper expectation for the Brother MFC-J895DW, it is an entry level all in one. It is not going to be the fastest, print the best photos or have the lowest cost per print. But what you are going to get is a lot a bang for the buck – NFC, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, scan to, legal size scanning, SD card, clear LCD screen, OCR and various cloud based services. All for about $100, not bad. That is a lot to cram in, plus you get the Brother quality. With that said, let’s look at the key areas – Set up and software – No problems here, up and running in only a few minutes. I connected directly to the printer with my Mac and everything installed without a glitch. Brother has always had solid software and set up. In reference to the software, the Brother ControlCenter for scanning management is excellent, I’ve used various iterations of it for years and I always found it to be simple, intuitive and efficient. Performance - Well, I’m trying to follow my own advice and set the proper expectations. Text prints are crisp and clear. Graphics are decent and photos are average quality. In reference to photos, you should not be buying this printer as a photo printer; there are far better photo printers. For me, printing was slow. It is rated at about 12 pages per minute for text, I observed slower. A lot slower. Keep in mind there are a lot of variables that can affect print speed but it still was a lot slower than my much more expensive Canon. This hold true for copying as well. Conclusion The all important question, should you buy it? For $100, you get a lot for your money. It is a perfectly competent printer that is jammed packed full of features. But alas, it is not for everyone. For me, I would pass. It is just too slow and the cost per print is way too high for anyone that prints several times a week. I did have to look this up , but it looks like monochrome prints are about 6 cents per page and color are 16+ cents. For the most part, that is in line with the competition at this price point but still too high. However, for the same or a bit more money, Brother has “Inkvestment” printers that have a lot lower cost per page. One is the same price right now as the MFC-J895DW but it looks like you give up some features. The other is about $70 more and does everything. But back to the MFC-J895DW, Brother has specifically designed this printer to be feature rich with a target consumer who does not print that much. If that is you, it is well worth the money. If you are someone like me, the MFC-J895DW just costs too much to run and is too slow. If you are like me, pass and look at some of the slightly more expensive Brother AIO printers.
