This little scanner is a workhorse and a great illustration of the benefit gained from a stand-alone scanner. I had it out of the box and hooked up on no time. You are advised to first download the appropriate software first, and then attach the scanner to your computer, via USB, which I did. Rediris software is furnished for optical recognition and document management and can also convert the pdf into a Word or Excel document. Cardiris is also offered for business card management. Time will tell if this software will be able to compete with Adobe Acrobat DC for my management needs. I liked what I saw in the documents I opened and converted using Rediris. The one touch operation is so simple. You place the stack of documents you want to scan in the feeder, press the scan button, and boom: As the scan starts, the software opens and shows the progress and when you confirm that the job is finished, the document is saved to the default location you set. I set my default folder as the same folder used for our networked office scanner without issue. No matter which I use, the scanned product is in the same folder. Operation is speedy: up to 40 pages per minute for black and white and 30 pages per minute in color is specified, and I have no reason to argue. Double those figures for the two-sided mode. I have experienced no jams or miscues in the two days I have used the device. The default resolution settings are fine for my use. If I wanted greater detail, I could so specify as the expense of speed. I have never felt the need to do so. Nor have I been constrained by the lack of an ethernet connection on the R40. I am the only one who will be using this scanner, but since I am storing its output on a network drive attached to my computer, anyone else in the office could map a drive on their computer to get to the document, if needed. Small footprint, efficient scanner. No complaints whatsoever. If you think you might need this, you probably do!

So I just received my Canon imageFORMULA R40 Document Scanner a week and ago and have been putting it through its paces. Insdie the box is the scanner, power cord, USB cord, tray attachment, and user documentation. Setup was very easy, simply following the instructions and download and install the software first, and let the software guide you through the rest of the setup process. After installing the software and connecting the scanner via USB to my computer it was ready to scan. My initial 2 scans did not go as planned and started to make me a little skeptical. However, the 3rd scan went fine and everything was back on track. When placing things to be scaned just make sure everything is sitting properly between the document guides to ensure a proper fit. Another great feature of the Canon imageFORMULA R40 scanner is the number of settings that it allows you to adjust and tweak to your liking. One of my favorite features that I've not seen in other scanners I've tested is that the Canon imageFORMULA R40 allows you to scan 2-sided documents in one run through. This is not only amazing but it can same loads of time especially when scanning a number of documents at one time. This scanner is great for anyone looking to scan and keep track of receipts, business cards, and other important data; in addition to scanning and emailing documents when there's no printer available. Perfect addition to any home or work office.

This is exactly what we needed to finally organize old pictures and files instead of having all the pictures in bulky boxes taking up space in the closet. It’s really nice! (Truth is the box with old photos is still in closet unfortunately but at least we now have a backup that doesn’t take any physical space. The scanner is a nice compact size. It is so easy to use with no hassle at all. Initial setup for me on a windows pc was painless and before I knew it files were going to my pc. Speed wise it’s not fast or slow but for me it is just right. I’m more concerned about it working right then getting everything done fast and then finding out it didn’t work correctly. This little canon doesn’t mess up! Really like it a lot! And now everything is properly logged.

Amazing, but where's the network option

First off, do not let the rating push you away from a purchase on this device as it is amazing and works really well. CON...reason for the 4-star is because of the USB only option. In today's world, most everything can easily connect to your network, mainly wireless and then hard-wire, network cable. Having firsthand knowledge there are other companies that specialize in scanners similar to this with a WiFi or network option. Back to the "Amazing", the fact that all you really have to do once setup is press a button "Start" and it scans everything fairly quickly and accurate is great as all-in-ones (printer/fax/scan/copy) (AIO) do not always have duplexing (scan -or- print both sides of documents while omitting blank pages) as a both option without higher costs and maintenance. It's generally one or the other and you sacrifice something. In today's digital age, we need that duplex option as a standard for all scanners...for those of us that still have paper somewhere not turned digital...ie me. REMEMBER TO REMOVE ALL HARDWARE THAT IS NOT PAPER WHEN SCANNING! Software, Canon...easy to use and setup with a simple interface and additional options to change and determine overall scanning. I was able to turn a standard office file cabinet (2-drawer lateral) to fully digital and searchable (OCR) in just under 2-hours time, the delays were to what I put in all caps above...it helps out a lot btw. This is truly something I would recommend as today I seem to do less printing and try to scan anything hardcopy that I can immediately into eformat to always have access to it. Makes it easier, cleaner, and readily accessible (cloud storage, home server). Happy scanning.

The Canon R40 document scanner is a really good sheet scanner. I was previously using a sheet scanner by a different manufacturer, which I thought was the best out there until I begin using this scanner. My previous scanner has a touch screen and is faster, but this one checks the boxes in other areas. I always had issues with the pages being slightly crooked with my previous scanner. The Canon scanner does a much better job of aligning all pages while it’s scanning them. Sometimes the app for my previous scanner would not detect the scanner. The app for the Canon scanner boots up and recognizes the scanner every time with no issues. The app for the Canon works well, but the UI looks and feels a bit dated. I also ran across a few bugs. When you create a custom scan you have the option of editing it and clicking on the trash can icon to delete it. Clicking on the trash can will ask you if you want to delete then you confirm afterwards. After I confirmed for it to delete the custom scan, it never does. I have to go to the Homepage of the app, right click on the custom scan, and then delete. I also was surprised they didn’t show me where the Power Button was located in the Quick Start guide. It also didn’t mention anything about the DFR button. I had to search online to see what the button was for. The paper eject stopper was difficult to open up at first. After several attempts of opening and closing the tray, it begin to loosen up and was a bit easier to open. Overall, it’s a great scanner that does a terrific job of keeping the pages aligned with high quality results.

The ImageFormula R40 is a pretty unexciting scanner and in this case that's a good thing. In practice it's a solid product with acceptable speed and excellent free software. Out of the box setup takes just a few minutes. One thing I liked about the R40 is the power adapter is a proprietary 24V adapter which isn't likely to be inadvertently plugged into other devices (the story for why that's important to me is not pertinent to this review :) ). Another plus is the scanner is packed using mostly cardboard instead of styrofoam so it's easily recyclable. Thankfully the software is a free download from Canon's website and not loaded from a CD, so there were several easy wins right from the start. Scanning speed on single documents through TWAIN were what I would expect from a USB 2.0 product - not horribly slow but noticeably slower on individual documents vs USB 3.0 and network scanners I've used. Multi-page documents were less noticeably slow, so perhaps the limiting factor is the initial response time. Where the R40 really shines is the no fuss OCR capability with the Canon apps. Speed and accuracy were noticeably better than some other scanners I've used - including a model that was much faster for raw scanning speed. The ImageFormula R40 is definitely worth a look if your office layout can accommodate a USB scanner and you want top notch OCR capability at a low cost.

Sometimes hardware surprises you. You go in with expectations that are rarely met by hardware and you become disappointed. I am blown away by this Canon scanner. I followed the install directions to the letter. Before hooking up the scanner to the computer, I downloaded the software and installed it. Then I hooked up the scanner. Moments later this scanner was ready to use. I have an application that is notorious for having issues with being picky with scanners, and even that program responded right away by recognizing the scanner and the document was scanned into a client file. I then checked to see if the document could be used outside of an application and scanned the document without any issues. This scanner is amazingly fast. Once you make sure you have put the document face down and flipped over, there are no problems whatsoever with this scanner. You can scan multiple pages using the sheet feed hopper. I highly recommend this scanner. Seems well built and its a Canon!

The image Formula R40 scanner is easy to set up and even easier to use. I had a chance to use it and send signed lease documents to my new home, as well as scan and secure important documents. Installing the software is a breeze, and once plugged into the computer, you can load it up with multiple documents and have it scan, which it can do duplex scanning without having to reverse the back page and scan. The scanner gets it all in one go! I am going to be wrapping up school and will need a dependable scanner. I have a Canon Pixma printer, but the scanner is entry level, so this is a great addition to my printing and scanning needs. You don’t even need to open the software, the control panel on the front allows you to start the scan immediately. If you need to scan a lot of documents quickly and don’t have a room for a xerox machine, this is something to consider.

The Canon imageFORMULA R40 Office Document Scanner is a great addition to any small or home office. It allows you to reduce clutter and paper waste and digitize all your paper files and receipts. If found this scanner to be exactly the companion my home office needed to clear out numerous files and the need for storage. Everything is backed up to computer files for easy storage. The only complaint I have is that it is not Bluetooth compatible and must used USB to connect to the computer. PROS - Canon name, brand recognition, and quality - Color or B&W scanning - Single sided or Duplex scanning - Fast, multi-page per minute scanning CONS - A bit large and heavy - Does not have wireless connectivity options.

I've been using document scanners for years now and barely have any paper records left. My wife has not. After picking up this device we spent the week digging ourselves out of dusty filing cabinets full of old records. Photos, receipts, tax records, business cards, this scanner took it all in stride and kept digitizing. After we were done, our shredder got one heck of a workout, we donated our old filing cabinets and reclaimed a portion of the basement that hasn't seen light in decades. A win for everyone!

The Canon ImageFormula R40 is a great little scanner. Setup is simple. Go the website named in the setup guide, download the software, unzip the file, and click on the .exe file. Installation took about two minutes. The software tells you when to connect the scanner with the included USB cable and turn it on. The first thing I did was test the automatic sheet feeding feature. I like this about this scanner. You don’t have to start any software. You just turn on the scanner, load your document, and touch the scan button. The scanner detects whether the page or pages are one or two-sided. Once scanned, the software loads, and the scanned pages can then be seen and manipulated. Couldn’t be easier. Like most scanners, there are a variety of settings you can change, like the file type saved as (jpg, pdf, etc.), saved location, resolution, correct skews, and more. If you frequently scan single sheet documents or documents consisting of multiple single sheets, you won’t go wrong with this scanner. Scanning is quick, and its small footprint makes it easy to find a location on your desk.
