Lizzy Caplan. Cant say Im on the JJ bandwagon as I think he blew it pretty hard with Super 8. But whatever the guy makes super watchable movies if not forgettable ones. I did enjoy this one though and toss it in every now and again. Heck I bought it again on Bluray just to see it on the projector. Fun easy popcorn movie to just space out with and enjoy the chaos. Oh yeah and Its got Lizzy Caplan.

I'm not a big fan of the hand held shaky cam effect in movies but I did enjoy this one. It has suspense, jump scares and the Cloverfield monster was ugly as ever

When this film first came out, they tried to closely guard the big reveal secret of the movie & so I'll not disclose it here. Basically it's a story of a horrible disaster that occurs as a young man attends a surprise going away party to celebrate landing a new dream job in another country. His best friends have a camcorder to catch it all but when the unimaginable happens, the rest of the film is about trying to survive. The ENTIRE film is shot POV style from this single camera & we are treated to images of a bittersweet love story, goofy friends plotting a party, the horror that is designated as Cloverfield, & the resultant scramble to live & love. The special effects are excellent, the idea is wonderful (& a much better than The Blair Witch Project), & at times sadly poignant as you realize the happiest moments are being recorded over to "document" this incredible event. If I have ANY complaint it's the jerkiness of the hand-held camera throughout, but you can become used to it soon enough & it DOES add to the realistic depiction of the event. I love showing this film to friends who've never seen it & tell them nothing in advance (I won't even let them see the liner notes on the back of the case). They're surprised (& pleased) every time. An old-fashioned idea done well for the 21st century audience.

    Great Blu-Ray, average movie...

The extra star is for the quality of the Blu-Ray/4K; the movie is good, but not anything special. The Blair Witch-meets-Godzilla monster movie concept is neat, but the characters are rather bland. They’re sexy because the creators need them to be, and...what else? Oh yeah, T.J. Miller can be funny sometimes, toting the camera around.

I watched this movie when it came out and was probably not paying too much attention...you know, my ADHD acts up every...oh look, a nickel! Anywhozles, my girlfriend kept asking about the Cloverfield 2 movie, and she had not yet seen the first one! She lived under a rock for many years before she met the awesome, old me. We watched this together and it was pretty darn swell when you pay attention, a lot scarier than I thought it was. My girlfriend was Scoobie-Doing it the whole movie, (biting her nails typewriter style). It's a great movie to have in your collection. One of the handheld video-camera style movies that actually works! Go buy it..I paid like 6 bucks...not too shabby!

    Cloverfield brings back the fear

Many contemporary kaiju movies focused too heavily on the monsters rather than the protagonists or the human characters. In doing so, they lost the fear and terror that such gigantic and destructive beings would naturally evoke. While the secondary plotline is forgettable and the human characters are rather flat, Cloverfield successfully refocuses itself on the humans and allows the viewer to experience the terror of a giant monster attack from the perspective of the individual on the ground. Warning- those with a tendency towards motion sickness might want to use caution. The camera work is deliberately jarring.

Seems like "Cloverfield" split audiences when it first released, but it hit at a time where the Internet and social media marketing wasn't established yet. As such, this movie was very mysterious when it debuted and people either seemed to love it or hate it. But to its credit, it was one of the early found footage movies that still holds up and provided its audience mystery and discovery at the same time. In a time where we can know every detail and every secret of a movie before we go in, "Cloverfield" took full advantage of its format and delivered an exciting movie of a kind we hadn't seen too much of before. Go back and watch, it holds up incredibly and is a lot of fun.

I have really enjoyed watching streaming versions of this film, so I was glad to be able to get a 4K copy. Good quality video and sound. A few dark scenes are a little heavy on film grain, but most of the scenes looked good. While I've enjoyed watching this multiple times, I only watched the sequel once, and didn't like it, so I declined to buy the combo / 2-movie package.

Let me be honest this was an impulse buy for me. Didn't have it in my collection, so I figured "what the heck I'll add it." Where did this movie come from? It is fantastically scary and funny too. Not only did it give the little ones bad dreams, The 8 - 10 year olds couldn't (wouldn't) fall asleep. I thought I was getting a deal because it was on sale. Had I known the reaction it would get; I would have paid retail. If you like to jump out of your skin (or just watch other jump out of theirs) you have to see this. It was 'Such a DEAL" till I watched it. Then the Deal was even better. Enjoy this with someone you love or just want have hanging on too YOU for one hour and 20 minutes. :o)

I never saw Cloverfield when came out, after seeing the sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane I wanted to see the original. I was disappointed in the original, but to be honest I'm not a fan of shaky camera movies and this one the camera is rockin' all the time. There just wasn't enough to the story and it got slow and predictable for me. So it's an okay monster movie, guess I was expecting a lot more.

The build-up of suspense is great in this movie. I wouldn't call it, "scary," in the overall sense, but there are a few moments that might make you jump out of your seat a little. There's also a good balance of humor. Not so much that it detracts from the general tone of the film, just enough to break up the tension here & there, like a good roller coaster ride.

This uses the "found footage" style of filming where one of the charaters has the video going for the event. I'm not usually a fan of that style of filmaking, but it worked well enough here. Overall not a bad movie for the genre. Had some very good moments in it and it will probably spur some of that good post-movie conversation, "what if that happened tonight?"
