The Cobra Drive HD is simple, easy-to-use dash camera. It doesn’t require a lot of setup. It comes with a power cable to plug into your car’s accessory port, as well as a syncing cable (that can also power the camera). The best part for me was that it comes with a mini-SD card IN THE BOX! I cannot express how awesome I think that is. It truly is workable straight out of the box.
The camera, once installed, will turn on when you start the car and begin recording automatically. You can also activate an Emergency Record feature if needed, otherwise it will continue to record until you stop the vehicle. It will take a few minutes to register that you have stopped moving and will shut down on its own.
Cobra suggests that you download their iRadar app. I downloaded it and easily linked it up with my phone. However, I did not see any advantages to have the app running while I’m using my camera. It may work better with a radar detector, but with the camera alone, I don’t see the benefit. It would have been nice to have a way to transfer a video to my phone in case I needed to, but I didn’t see a way to do that.
There is also software that you can use to view your videos on the computer. It acts as a basic editing suite. I wanted to use it just for playback, but I was not able to do so.
The video records in three-minute long files. I was able to transfer the files to my computer just by using Windows Explorer. The video quality is very good.
I think for a first-time user this is a great choice. It’s simple to set up, usable right out of the box, a trusted name in car electronics, and works as expected.

The Cobra drive HD camera is a compact, full featured dash cam that takes very clear day and night time videos. The resolution can be set from 720p to 1296p to make the most use of available memory card space. The camera will overwrite the oldest footage once the card is full in order to maintain the newest recordings. This model also includes the iradar service which notifies you about police activity and stationary radar ahead of your rout. If you are looking for a high quality dash cam for your vehicle, I think this camera makes a good choice. The reason I gave the camera 4 stars is 2 fold. First, I hardwired the camera to an always on fuse with an aftermarket hardwire kit (maybe the cobra kit would fix the issue). When i start the truck, the camera goes into shutdown and will turn itself off. I have to manually turn the camera on each time I start my vehicle. The second issue I have may be related to my specific camera (hopefully). When my camera is in park mode and wakes from park is will often wake to a white screen. When I review the video footage, it is also solid white making it completely unusable. I have to turn the camera off and power back on in order to correct the problem. So I am unable to use the park mode feature on this camera because of this issue. I have contacted cobra, but they have not offered any solution to this problem. Other than the turning off at startup and the white screen on my particular camera, it has all the features you would want, very good video quality and a decent price. This camera is also available with a second rearview camera which I do not have.
I really think my issues may be specific to my particular camera so I still highly recommend this camera with the iradar device to anyone looking for a nice compact dash cam for your vehicle.

Recording bad drivers is fun!

I never knew how much fun it would be to record and share videos of the idiots I encounter on the road on a daily basis!! This is my first dash cam and I love it! Setup and installation of the app are very easy. I was worried about how long the adhesive to fasten the cam to the dash would last being that I live on the sun in Florida, but I have had no problems and Cobra advertises that the cam is resistant to extreme heat.
Using the cam is easy. Just turn it on and make sure it pairs to your smartphone or you will lose the iRadar functionality. Don't let the term iRadar confuse you. This does not have a radar. By being connected to iRadar, you are are connected to the iRadar cloud of drivers who provide info for you to benefit from if there is a speed trap or traffic cams ahead. I don't really speed so it's not super important to me.
What is important to me is the fun that I have showing my wife and friends how bad people drive and the peace of mind knowing that if I got into an accident, I have the footage to back me up if I am not at fault. For retrieving videos, I use my laptop and the Drive HD player that you can download. Using your cam with the bluetooth connection to your phone, your speed and location are embedded into the video. You can see this data with Drive HD.
All in all, I found this dash cam easy and fun to use. 5 stars!

1. Like the length of the cable. Which allows hidden install.
2. Use the power for switched 12v so you can have it turn on when you start your vehicle up.
Has different modes of recording 1296p is the wierd one.
3. It tracks pretty good at night. Not perfect by any means but still viewable.
4. Emergency recording mode is pretty cool also. Touch the button and records automatically.
5. The audio is pretty good but the mic can be over powered sound sometimes.
6. Could not get the app to work to download to the phone. To the pc is best way that worked for me.
7. Has a few features like lane keeping notification and others that if you want to use are awesome.

This dash cam works great - it was easy to setup and it's easy to use. It automatically starts recording and retrieving the recordings is really easy. When combined with the iOS app, you get all the information you need, right at your fingertips. The only thing missing is a rear dash cam, but isn't part of this item.

I got this dash cam to just record my daily commute to record for my son who will start driving soon on what not to do when he gets in a car. Setup was straight forward and linking the camera with the Android app was one of the easiest things I've ever done. I installed and opened the app and next thing I knew it detected the camera.
The extra "novelty" features of lane drift and collision warning are just that novelty. I'm sure over time, with some firmware revisions it might get great and I'm sure if I played with camera position I might reduce the false alarms, but for now it isn't there and just adds a distraction beep.
That said the camera works great. It ties in with the iRadar app to pop up speed trap warning etc. I didn't get to see that work, since luckily the back roads I take daily are fairly empty.
Overall I'm happy with the camera recording my drive, not only to show my kids what it is like on the road, but I do like there is a recording in case of an accident or dangerous driving. If you need a dash cam and want a few extra bells and whistles, this is a good choice. Setup is easy and using it was straight forward.

The Drive HD camera works really well as a day time dash cam. It's easy to use and does exactly what you would expect, it take continuous looping video while you're driving. It will automatically start recording as soon as it powers on. The video is pretty good quality, though the quality at night really degrades. Because it doesn't have a light or night vision, it's almost impossible to see anything. But, if you drive mostly during the day, you'll be pretty pleased with the quality.
Other Features::
The Drive HD also has some "smart" features that aren't as impressive. The box says it has the ability to detect lane departure and collision detection, though I don't think it works. I have been using this for a few days now and have yet to get a lane departure warning, even when trying to trigger it. I have tried to hit anything so can't speak to the collision detection but, I wouldn't put money on it.
The camera also has a "sentry mode" to keep watch oer your car while it's parked. Not really sure how useful this feature is, given that if someone really wanted to mess with your car, they would just take the very noticeable camera glued to your windshield. I get that it may be a deterrent but, it just seems like another thing for someone to steal from your car.
The iRadar app::
In short, there is no reason to use this app. The app itself is a map and speedometer that supposedly features community driven alerts like speed trap monitoring and accidents but, I don't think anyone is actually posting to the app because, I have yet to see an alert. You get a one year subscription to the app with the Drive HD but, after that you have to pay a subscription and to be honest, I'm not really sure what you get from this app that you can't get from a free navigation app.
The map on the app doesn't feature navigation so there really isn't a need to keep it up if you need navigation and the speedometer really doesn't do anything either. Overall, the iRadar app is a hard pass.
Conclusion::
If you're looking for a dash cam, this one work but, don't buy it for any of the other features because, they just don't work.

If you frequent the highways or have to drive often, this is the one you're looking for. If you drive for Uber or Lyft, I suggest getting the other version with the rear facing camera. The radar works fine as expected with Cobra. The design itself is sleek and has a bit of an oem look which I always like. It's not intruding like the other dashcams and it is user friendly.

This is my first experience with using a dash cam. As a part-time package delivery person, I realized it is important to document my driving to have proof of any incidents that may occur. I was overwhelmed at first since I never set up a dash cam before, but I eventually figured it out through the quick set-up guide and found an online manual from Cobra. At first, I used the cigarette lighter in my car but it kept the camera always running even after turning the car off. I soon switched to a USB port and now the camera only turns on when I get in the car and then turns off automatically when I get out. This is so convenient that it basically runs on its own and constantly records with no interaction needed. The footage can also be viewed/edited on a PC or put into the Drive HD video editor to monitor your whole driving path and other stats. I highly recommend this for peace of mind and safety while out on the road.
