(Synopsis) Go ahead spend an additional $400 or more for a Radar Detector. You will still get false alarms. Even the GPS equipped units false at door openers and intrusion alarms, until the location is flagged. What good is that feature on a route you haven’t traveled before? This RAD 450 reliably provides all the warning and information you need at far less cost. It gives clear alerts at a distance great enough to avoid problems. I may not be consciously speeding but just in case I want to know where they are so I can go even slower (read on to longer version if you’re interested in why). (Long Version)This is a very well designed and great performing Radar Detector. My last detectors were a famous and expensive brand. One quit working after few years and the other, a battery operated unit began to give way too many false alarms both radar and laser, even when passing cell towers. The beauty of the RAD 450 is that while not totally immune to false alarms (and neither are the $600 plus competitor units) the way it handles and displays alerts makes all the difference. I have been driving with a Radar Detector for decades. No, I don’t use it to purposely speed. Yes I do use it to learn where speed traps are set up. Way back in the ‘70s I received a ticket from what was obviously a crooked speed trap. Unless Radar can see through a field of trees and a long Cadillac Limo they had no real idea of the speed of the New ’73 VW Squareback Demo that was a perk from my job. I came upon the limo stopped in the middle of the road and the cops just pulled me over too. Having dealer plates I did not have a registration so I got a ticket for that too. I pleaded guilty to the no registration and not guilty to the speeding by mail. I then received a notice that the registration summons was dropped but I had to pay a fine for speeding. I went to court and the judge said I couldn’t win and to pay the fine which would be more if I contested it. So goes the local Revenue Enhancement Program. I began watching for possible traps and a few years later I bought a Fuzzbuster which looked like a small toaster sitting on the dash of another Demo, this time a nice New ’78 Chevy Nova 2DR V8. To test it I drove an abrupt 55 to 30 mph speed trap area at night. The X band (the only one used then) went off as I approached the speed zone. Meanwhile I noticed headlights bearing down fast so I pulled over and let him fly by. Sure enough down and up a hill and around a curve about a mile from where the Fuzzbuster went off the guy was pulled over. Lesson for today, never drive without your Cobra and get it at Best Buy for best price and service.

    Cobra RAD-450 Vs. Passport 9500ix

If you don't want the story just scroll all the way down. If you want to read the experience, continue. For 2 years I had an old XRS-9370 cobra that became outdated and started picking up every sensor from stores, to Audi, BMW, and GM vehicles. It got annoying with false alarms. So I decided to go with a Passport 9500ix. Out of the box it was a very good radar and would pick up at long distances which is good, but again it would pick up Cadillac and Mercedes Benz vehicles. Not as severe as my old radar, but I decided to hold onto it. Now 5 days after the purchase the right side of the lights on the display went dim. I decided to return it. Oddly enough, I read about the RAD-450 Cobra but never saw one in inventory at any best buy. But this day. I returned the escort and there was only one RAD450 that none of the members even knew about. It was just there and it was the only one they had got. So I decided to give it a try. Quick review: I'm blown away by the performance of this radar. It does NOT pick up any type of collision system from any GM which has been a pain for both escort and cobra owners. As for distance in picking up police, it doesn't have an extreme long distance reach but does have maybe about a mile reach which comes in handy. As far as quality, it seems very well put together and it does exactly what it says with the IVT filter for In-Vehicle-Technology. 1 false alarm in 3 days. I had 8 false alarms with the escort in 5 days. Worth the money!!!

    Replaced a $300 Escort X80 with this

I had a Cobra that bricked itself and sat non stop from power on until power off at an annoying laser detection warning. I tossed it, and put back an older Cobra Vendetta, but was tired of the false alarms that one got. So I purchased the $300 Escort X80 and was nothing but disappointed, both in the app that's an annoying money grab with four or five "no thanks" prompts I have to click past to avoid upgrading to the paid premium junk before it would even link up, and then things it should do like be able to let me mark something as a false positive, it failed to do. The detector itself, a new model, had all the same failures my older Cobra models had with some of the stores I pass on the way to work. My car has the radar avoidance features as well as blind spot monitoring, so the Escort even went off as soon as I started my car in the garage, I assume it was receiving radar signals. I'd also get it to start warning me as I backed into the garage when I would park. VERY annoying for something over $300 so I returned it, and tried this. So far, not a single false positive in the normal places I've *always* had them with every other detector. It also doesn't go off when I'm in my garage, either coming home or leaving. So far each time it's gone off, I've been able to see the police car somewhere ahead as I eventually passed it. Volume is annoyingly loud if you set it so, necessary if you have windows open and lots of wind noise, or loud music. Easy to read display as well. Not sure how it will do longer term, but so far in the short time I've had it, it's proven far better than any other one I've had simply by ignoring all the spots my old ones used to go off...

Top Detector At Any Price Point

This detector is in many ways the perfect detector. Here's why. It does not have the range of the $600 detectors but essentially this is a plus - because it has fewer false signals, while it still detects police radar in time to slow down. It also covers all bands including Laser, K, Ka. It also has VG2 and Spectre signals - although I don't really see the point of Spectre and VG2 - just turn your detector off in Virginia and Wash DC. I have found it works fine and police are usually on Ka in my area. All K hits are auto-door openers so far. It does seem to light up more indicators when it is really police radar - great. In summary it works fine and ironically due to lower range than best detectors it may be better as I said above - but you choose. Lastly it says it has filtering for the new BLIS and other car avoidance systems - but can't fully attest to that. I did see it not detect (or filtered out properly) a Mercedes which had the BLIS or other collision avoidance systems as I saw the Mercedes light up in it's side view mirrors. However on American cars with BLIS it did sound off so this area is muddy which seems to be true of all detectors per my research. In the future I expect the best detectors will filter out the BLIS radar signal but will have an indicator of some sort so you know it thinks it saw BLIS. I'd buy this one for now till the best ones really get better.

After reading favorable reviews, I bought this Cobra to replace a BEL I had used for years, it finally quit on me. It does a very nice job overall. Most police in my neck of the woods use KA band, it doesn't have super long detection range on KA, but, its enough, at least a half a mile to a mile, depending on terrain. The OLED display is good for this price range, very visible and it won't wash out, even in direct sunlight. The "knight rider" scrolling line and screen saver are nice touches, too. Also nice- the alert volume automatically lowers substantially after 3-4 seconds of full volume alerts, nice if you get a pesky K band false, once in awhile it will still pick up K band falses from vehicles with blind spot monitoring or building alarm systems, traffic signals, etc, but not very often and its got online updates for K band falses, which I haven't tried yet. If you want a good basic detector that doesn't cost 500.00, this is a good one.

I've been commuting 65 miles each way to work for about 8 months and bought this little gem way at the beginning. It has saved me at least every week, sometimes nightly. I turned off the K band and the X band because law enforcement only uses the Ka band and Lasers (I've only encountered 1, they seem to use those on the service roads). and it really helps with false alerts. Ka=cop period. I usually get by first beep when they're about 1/4 mile out and just watch it, by 3 bars you really need to be at the speed limit and on alert, 5 bars you should see something. If the bars rise quickly they can be coming from the other side or just over a hill. Anyways, I have not yet gotten a ticket and I regularly fly at 80-85. Go for it, this product is money.

This was my second attempt. My first detector I tried to get kept going off in my garage due to my car's radar for proximity and such. It was annoying, going past a car with blind spot detection would set it off too. This one doesn't have the same issues. Works well. There's a lot of spots my other detectors would go off from some store's radar for the doors, but this only goes off at one of them. Every other alert it gives is genuine. The only downside is the window mount - it's horrible and doesn't last. Keeps falling off if it gets too hot or too cold, so I replaced it with a better third party one. For the price can't beat this.

Great device for the price!!! I bought a radar detector for $5.00 at a garage sale and it was exactly the same kind! That radar detector was the BEST purchase of ANY electronic device for me in my entire life!! I did not know if it was even in good working condition, but for $5.00..... Anyway fast forward about 5 1/2 years later it finally gave out... so that is why I did buy the radar detector from my Best Buy in okc.... Your company was the only place that carried the same one & had it in store for purchase!! So, Thanks again

I have a love-hate relationship with this Cobra Detector. It works absolutely fantastic when it wants to. Sometimes it will read a cop from as far as half-mile away. Occasionally, it doesn't work at all when you know good and well that a cop is using his radar. There is lots of false readings when driving the interstate which gives you more anxiety than if there really were a cop nearby. All in all, it has definitely saved me from several tickets, but really would recommend looking into pricier alternatives if you think that you must have a detector.

I had a previous Cobra that lasted for many years, however, it finally gave out. Therefore, I knew I had to get another Cobra radar detector due to the great experience with the previous one. I'm so glad I bought this new Cobra RAD450 as we had a business engagement in Dallas in early June and this Cobra Radar and Laser Detector worked perfectly. It informed of radar activity up to about two miles and even behing small hills. It also works very well in traffic zones. I recommend it very highly as it's very reasonably priced.

Ive had this for about 2 weeks and its worked the way it should...sometimes. It won't pick up the much less powerful solar sign radar even if it's head on, Im assuming they're too low powered. It has signaled me about 3/4 of a mile when there's an oncoming police officer with KA band so range is ok, enough for me to slow down. False signals are very minimal with this unit, I like that. I usually have it on Medium sensitivity and it seems to filter out those unwanted signals. I will await for the Uniden R1 to go back on sale for $179 then I'll be switching out as I have read that the R1 has better range.

When I first received the RAD450 I thought it was great because it wasn't going off at every store in town and only went off at Wal-Mart if you were right in front of the door. Then when I saw a cop in the median, it didn't go off until I was about 40 yards from him. No time to slow down. There was plenty of traffic ahead that he was checking. To make sure I called a buddy of mine that is a police officer. He set up about a half mile away and on a straight road with no obstruction and had his radar on the whole time. Again, never picked him up until I was right on him. Had the settings on high also. Not sure if this one was defective or not but it was returned. I've had better detectors at 40 dollars.

This Cobra saved me several tickets as I was driving across the country. However in one state, Ohio, it did not give me a warning at all and I did get a ticket. Several other reviews had mentioned that it goes off sometimes when there aren’t police around. I found that to be true but it wasn’t particularly annoying. I didn’t have a problem with the volume, I could hear it. Even with music playing in the car. I didn’t have a problem being able to see it even in broad daylight. So overall I’m glad I bought it. It saved me several tickets. But I did get one ticket. You make your own decision.

I previously owned one cheaper radar detector but it was more of a "new-car detector" that beeps every time in observance of cars that sends out radar for various purposes. I researched online and found that this one comes with IVT-filter that would filter those false positives, and it works! --it has a much less number of false positives. I think it is also one of the most affordable radar detectors with IVT filters -- others can cost $500+. Overall, it is a 5-star radar detector based on its price.

I just bought this, as I do a lot of traveling by car and I wanted to make sure I am aware of where the radar guns are at. I do not speed or I rarely do (and never over 5 mph), but for those few times my speed is a little over, I want to get alerted to a nearby speed trap. I took this out for the first time and it worked great. It gave me plenty of warning and while it does give some false alarms, it does not give a lot of them. The price is so much better than a lot of the others on the shelves, so that is another pro. Glad I bought it.

Works much better than my older Cobra model, with fewer "false alarms" and quicker "real alerts". Nothing too fancy here, just a simple black and white screen with beeps and Voice Alert. This model advertises giving fewer "false alarms" for electronics in other vehicles, and I think it lives up to that claim. As with any radar detector, it can't be 100% perfect. But so far this one is performing great.

I give this product three out of five stars . Overall the product does it’s job however it does pick up false signals driving by a bank or a grocery store that has a security system . A little annoying at times but yet keeps you on your toes. I think I’ll use this temporarily into I can afford the more expensive up to date technology systems. I did a review on this cobra and it really does get bad reviews . However it was in my budget and I needed something for those just in case moments.

I am very pleased with this Cobra! I didn't want to spend a ton, but felt that I needed some protection as I traveled 12 hours to WV. Totally happy that I remain ticket free! Lol This is actually the 2nd one I bought, as my son talked me out of the 1st one. I have no complaints and feel that I get an adequate warning, and would give this a 5 star rating. In fact, I see that the price match is $109, so, I am going to purchase one more for my other son.

I was in my Best Buy store reading reviews online about this radar detector and decided to buy it, well it was trash. You will pass the cop before it alerts you. I took it back the next day and got the escort x80 and so far I love it, it does exactly what I want it to. So don’t waste your money on this just go on and spend a little more and get a better one.

I tried this out thinking it would be good because of the reviews. The price seems reasonable, but the radar itself has a lot of false alerts and late alerts, sometimes not even alerting at all. I tested it against my friend’s escort x70 and it didn’t pick up much of what the x70 was alerting to. For the price I paid, the radar is not worth it. I returned mine. Spend the extra money for a radar that will work. Using a radar is all about trust, and I would not trust this one.
