"Collateral" came out in a great year for Jamie Foxx. I believe that he also did "Ray" based on the life of Ray Charles that year. Cruise's character, Vincent, hires an innocent cab driver, Max (played by Foxx), to drive him for a whole night for a large sum of money. After reluctantly agreeing to the deal, Max realizes at first stop that Vincent is a hit man and he plans to kill someone at each stop. This is my kind of movie, in that it creates and grows in tension as the story unfolds. There is also a great philosophical aspect to the film as Max and Vincent talk about Max's life and Vincent's work. The movie has action, suspense and philosophical undertones, leading to an exciting conclusion. Highly recommended.

I bought this having not seen it because a group of 4k collectors that tend to promote films I also enjoy kept mentioning it with praise. At the same time, they do note some of the limitations of it visually. For me the excellent mix of story, performance, direction, and tone make this a masterful film and like with most 4ks it's probably the best it will ever look at your home. (Though I have not seen the bluray of this.)

One of Mann's last great films (IMO)

With classics like HEAT, MANHUNTER, THIEF & LAST OF THE MOHICANS in his catalogue, it is somewhat dismaying that Michael Mann seems to be slipping in the last 10 years or so. One of the first big-name Hollywood directors to champion digital photography over film (alongside David Fincher), Mann seems to have allowed his sense of visual aesthetics to dwindle into amateurish TV-grade production levels since this, his first digital feature. MIAMI VICE was fun, but looked like doody at many points & I couldn't bring myself to watch PUBLIC ENEMIES because it looked like garbage. But I digress; COLLATERAL was/is fantastic! Tom Cruise is a new riff on his usual maniacal self & Jamie Foxx is excellent up against said mania. The disc is cheap & chock full of extras. And the storyline is kind of a further exploration of concepts in HEAT, concerning the communication and closeness of the good & bad guys...

A paid professional killer ends up in the back seat of a cab driven by an ordinary man. The chemistry between Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx is exceptional. Two actors at the top of their game. The storyline develops and gets your attention immediately. An ordinary guy has to do extraordinary things to save innocent lives. The 4K UHD is pretty crisp and and the surround sound will immerse you in the action. Interesting to see Tom in the villain role.

A Stunning Release of a Stunning Film

Rather than focus on the film, I'll focus on the disc. That said, the film itself if solid and well worth owning. Michael Mann's movie is solid. The cast is great. The script it phenomenal.
As for the disc, it's quite a treat. The film looks stunning. The film, which was shot with digital camera in part, looks great. Given the fact that this is an older film, there's a grain to it when the digital camera is in use. Honestly, it's a phenomenal transfer.
The extras are ports from the original DVD and are a bit light, but Mann's commentary is worth a listen.

Along with Heat and The Insider, Collateral takes you on a thrilling journey as things unravel. The star of this film is Los Angeles, the unique retrospect on several key areas of the city, and most importantly, the audio design. No one does shootouts like Michael Mann and this, along with Heat and Blackhat showcase power of sound design.

Tom Cruise shines through the darkness that is his character. He plays a hitman, a vagabond delivery service of crime and punishment while Jamie Foxx is his driver. He forces Jamie's character into a deal where he helps him (Tom) complete his jobs and he'll get a HUGE some of money... at what cost? Deception, Paranoia, Religion, and Philosophy wrapped in the basic human condition of how much can one guy take and is what you want/need really worth it?

A good film gets an ok 4K release. I can’t say that you should upgrade if you own the blu ray already but it is worth the purchase if you don’t already own it. One of Tom Cruises better films, but Jamie Fox’s performance really sells the film. Great audio on the 4K but the picture is maybe one step up from the blu ray presentation. I say grab it if you don’t have it and can find it for less than $20
