Not to be Confused with Memories of Murder...

I purchased Confessions of Murder wanted a dark and gritty thriller in the style of Silence of the lambs, Se7en and Memories of Murder. Watching a film with specific expectations is generally a poor idea and I relearned that after viewing this genre mash up from South Korea. The opening scene set me up for satisfaction with a tense and beautifully filmed chase in the rain as a detective pursues a serial killer. The killer escapes and after the statue of limitations on his crimes expires, he writes a book detailing his crimes and it's met with extreme praise, turning the murderer into a celebrity and sending the detective into a furious rage. One of the killers victims was never found and the emergence of the killer is a chance for the detective to find the last body and earn some sort of redemption. Meanwhile, the victim's families band together to kill the murderer resulting in a bit of slapstick humor and over the top Die Hard style action as the detective intervenes a saves the killer for his own purposes. This mess culminates with a silly plot twist and a few extra revelations are thrown into the mix, presumably to intended to be some tour de force conclusion by the films writers and director but instead is reeks of desperation. After seeing so many great Korean films Confessions of Murder was a huge disappointment.

This movie is....interesting. It's definitely not as straight forward as it would appear from the description.
