Customers find value in the Cube's affordability, ease of use, and compatibility with both Android and Apple devices. Many appreciate its VR capabilities and the augmented reality experiences it offers, although some note that many apps are not free. The Cube's sensitivity to light is also a recurring concern for some users.

Reasonably priced and fun
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, yes the Cube will work without the Merge VR headset, but that is kind like buying a new car without tires. You can look through your phone and see the Cube, and even build a mindcraft style world, but with the VR headset it is twice as nice! It is way more interactive and fun for sure. I have been asked if it will work with other devices like Amazon tablets, and I don’t know because I have not tried it. It works well with IOS, and I am not sure about android since I don’t have anything android in the house. It cites the fact that you can "hold a holographic object in the palm of your hand," and that is very accurate. It is really intuitive and the directions are easy to follow to get you started. After that, it is really fun to try the different VR, AR and mixed reality options for the different games and apps. Tons of re-playability. The price point is really good for this item. $15, come on. You will waste that much on coffee this week! This is really a product for kids in the "tween" range, but I have to say I enjoyed it as well. There are a ton of free apps and games, more than I thought there would be. If you really want to get the full experience, add a Merge VR headset for about $60 and it takes things to the next level. I find the combination to be better than my PlayStation VR, with no cords to trip over either. Definitely a good buy and I recommend it to anyone.

Buy it! You won't be disappointed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Full Disclosure: I am a Best Buy Tech Insider Network member. I received the Merge Cube for review purposes. Below is my fair and honest review. I have not been compensated. Let me start with - BUY THE MERGE CUBE!! you wont' be disappointed. Ok, more details. What's in the box. The Merge Cube, a redemption code for activating the Merge Cube App. The Merge Cube is a hard foam cube. It looks somewhat between the all-spark from Transformers and something from the future. It's black/dark gray with silver markings all over it. The silver markings are actually anchor points for the Merge Augmented Reality (AR) app. This brings me to the important part. To use this you need an phone. I used this with my iPhone, but Android is also supported. Once you have the app, give it permission to use your camera, the Merge Cube is amazing. Holding the cube in front of you, via your phone, it turns into something amazing. There's a virtual body app, a fireplace, you can use it as a controller for some of the games in the app - all of which are fun, cool and simply amazing. The AMAZING part is as you rotate/move the cube in your hand, you can see another side of the object - so turn it when looking at the human body, and you can look at the back of the body. With the fire game/app, you see smoke drift away, but you can also hold the fire upside down and look underneath the fire. Playing with the Merge Cube you see so much potential for the future of AR and VR. I would not hesitate to buy this again or gift it to a friend. Side note: The Merge Cube is ideally paired with the Merge VR headset. This lets you have a much better experience. You can use the Merge Cube and associated apps without a VR headset. So if you want to start light, you could - which is why I give this a Buy Now recommendation. In fact, I have already had more than a few friends decide to buy this after just one use. You can't get a better recommendation than that!

Great AR/VR experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Merge Cube is the first device/object I've used that uses some form of Augmented Reality (AR) via so-called "holograms". The cube is not that big, around 3-inches in each side and has some geometric patterns on it. The cube is soft to touch, but not squishy - made from some foam-like material. Merge cube can be used with almost all smartphones (Android or iOS) which is a great benefit. Furthermore, the experience can be enhanced with the Merge VR Googles. I've tried a bunch of apps from the Merge Miniverse, and there are a lot of varieties of apps there. Overall, the experience is quite nice. The movement of the cube is nicely detected by my OnePlus 5 Android smartphone (though if you move the cube too quickly, there's some lag, which I think is acceptable). The plastic tray of the packaging plays a dual role of being smartphone holder too, but I found the angle to be a bit awkward. Another thing is that though this is definitely an entry-level AR/VR item, there's a lack of general instruction material provided with it. It just tells me to go to a Merge VR website and expects me to learn by just using apps. This is not a big hindrance, but compared to some other systems which have very thought out tutorials (like Google Cardboard), this makes the Merge Cube learning curve a tad more tedious. Overall, this is a great beginners AR/VR system, especially when used together with the Merge VR Googles. The low price makes it a great gift for kids in the forthcoming holiday season. I'll definitely encourage anyone to try it out if you're interested in AR/VR systems.

Interesting
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Received the cube with the merge VR goggles. I was intrigued with what this interesting box might do. I had never tried VR anything. Opened the package and found this small little black and silver cube. Read the minimal instructions and downloaded an app. With the help of my iPhone 7plus and the app, next thing I know, instead of holding the black box, I’m holding a tiny castle in my hand and shooting fireworks from the castle. There was also a kitten and a block of cheese. I’m an older consumer, but this might be fun with the more tech oriented younger generations. Looking forward to sharing it with my 11 year old grandson. I think there are games to be played with it, but confess that I haven’t searched them out. I will leave that job to him. You must use a smartphone with it and I’m pretty particular about not letting kids use my phone as a toy. Hopefully, but Not sure if it works with an iPod. I found it to be mildly interesting and for the price I nice little gadget to give as a potential “stocking stuffer” for the youngest techies.

Awesome Little AR Toy
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a really cool little toy. At this point there's a limited selection of apps that will work with it, but the ones that are available are a lot of fun to use. The cube itself is just a piece of foam with special markings on it for compatible apps to track it. It's made to work with the Merge VR headset, but it seems like just about any VR headset that has a front cutout for the phone camera would work with it. You do have to register it with an activation code for some reason before you can use it - I suspect it's to prevent counterfeiting. Once you're in a compatible app you just hold the cube up to your phone's camera and it starts tracking. On my iPhone 7 the tracking was pretty impressive - I had to shake it up pretty good to get the apps to lose track of it. I tried Snake Attack and AnatomyAR+ and both worked very well. Snake Attack is like a 3D version of Snake and the Anatomy app turns the cube into a little guy that lets you examine different organs in the body. Unfortunately a good portion of the apps available for this do cost money, but the price of the Cube itself is low enough to make up for it. Not having done a lot of AR stuff before I have to say the experience of using these apps and playing these games was pretty surreal - I quickly forgot that I was just holding a foam cube and was pretty drawn in to what was being shown through the phone camera. Hopefully Merge will come out with more apps that support the Cube, but as it stands right now it's still a fun little toy that's well worth the price you pay - especially if you've already got a VR headset.

Oh yeah! Affordable Augmented reality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Merge HoloCube and Goggles from are awesome! Merge Virtual Reality has created an augmented reality (AR) power duo that allows you to hold and interact with holographic objects. The MergeCube is a 2 inches square foam cube with weird patterns on each face. Looking like some alien artifact from a Marvel movie! Using VR glasses either Merges own or another cardboard viewer you load up the Merge things or other merge cube app on your smartphone and place them in the goggles, the cube is then replaced with a holographic image. When looking at the Cube it is replaced by a 3D hologram allowing the user to rotate the it or even pull it closer to look at details. When playing a game you move the cube for example to fly a spaceship. I felt this control was much more natural than a joystick. The future games and interactive applications are only limited by the developers imagination. I could imagine these being used in interactive TV or movies as well. I do recommend having a newer phone for the more graphics intensive applications. I was able to get my Nexus 6p to fit in the MergeVR goggles but had to stretch it a bit (it is made of a flexible foam..very comfortable) regular phones should fit with no problems. There are Android and IOS apps available. This is a great interactive device the first affordable consumer application for augmented reality. I recommend it for all kids and any gamer looking for a different experience.

Fun for the family
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a pretty fun tool for use with VR googles. Applications that are written for this will turn this simple cube into many different 3D objects when viewing through the VR Googles. Such as the human heart, or skull. You can turn the cube in your hand and see all the identified parts. Fun way to learn. You can also use it as the object of a game; like flying a plane through a game. The apps I found are pretty simple at this point, but fun experience.

Full of unrealized potential
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received the Merge Cube with my Merge VR Goggles and wasn't sure what it was, at first. It didn't take long to realize that it is full of potential. When viewed with a VR capable phone, it 'becomes' something other than a cube, and you get to choose what that is. It works with, or without, the VR headset, but having headset frees up both hands to manipulate the cube. Once you key your phone to the cube, you can choose from several apps to determine what the cube becomes. One will make it appear as if you're holding a brain in your hands, another is like a simpler, 3D version of Minecraft. The Merge Cube is full of potential, but apps are still pretty limited. Overall, I'd say wait for more content before getting on board.

Exciting product
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This works really well with the Merge VR headset. All that is needed to be done is bring the Cube (which kind of resembles a Piece of Eden from Assassin's Creed) up into the camera's view before its patterned code transforms the spongey device into, well, pretty much anything. While using the Cube with the headset, it flattens the environment and essentially tricks our mind into thinking we are holding different kinds of digital objects. Cons: There are not many free apps availabe in the market currently to enjoy the full usage of the cube. Lot of apps are expensive. Overall, a very intuitive product. This need to go through several levels of development/ improvement. Hoping to see them soon.

A gadget. A fun gadget.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Merge Cube is a VR box that you can place on a flat surface or hold in your hand. Now, what's a VR box, you might reasonably ask. It's simply a plastic cube that allows you to project VR worlds using your smartphone, tablet, or, preferably, a pair of VR goggles. I considered taking video of it as seen through my iPad to post here, but it really wasn't fair to the Cube. While you could see the images that are projected, they look like projected images. With goggles, it is an entirely different experience. Instead I'm going to ask that you use your imagination on it. Imagine that you're holding a small city in your hand, a city that looks like one of those architecture models showing you what the new senior living community will look like. Now imagine the blocky cars and trucks are driving themselves around the streets, including over the edge of the cube onto the next side. Imagine holding a box of cartoonish fireworks in your hand, fireworks that would do Wile E. Coyote proud. Now imagine touching the controls on your goggles and having the fireworks shoot off in your living room. And so on. The only downside is the cube is very sensitive to light sources. If you hold it at the wrong angle, which will sometimes happen when you're turning it to see what's on the next face of the cube, it will revert to looking like a plastic cube for a fraction of a second - just enough time to break the illusion. And this is the only reason I gave it four instead of five stars. So, a gadget, a conversation starter, a fun thing to pick up and play with. In this context, it's probably worth the low price. As something you'll think every day, "Wow, I'm glad I have this," not so much. Think of it as a complex, digital snowglobe. And if that's what you're looking for, it's more fun than plastic flakes.

great stocking stuffer for kids!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Merge Cube VR, will work not only with the Merge VR googles, but also with any google cardboard device out there. Essentially, it is once you view it thru various apps available on iOS and Android, including iPad tablets, it changes that cube into a 3D tracked object on screen, replacing the real cube with another shape. There are quite a few games and apps available, and while fun, they are mostly aimed towards children. There is defintley a wow factor here, and I am excited for where this augmented reality will take us down the line. You can literally rotate another 3D object around, hold it closer to your VR googles or your tablet camera, it is pretty amazing. The apps I played with also showed you the actual video feed from the camera lens, so when you have your replaced 3D object, it makes it really fun to see this other augmented reality object in it’s place, which you can rotate and spin around, etc.. while the video is still there. You can see your hand manipulating the object in real time. Some apps allow you to record the video as you are messing with it. Very cool. Some apps will also fake a shadow if the cube is on a surface. In one instance, I played with a firework crate (in place of the cube), and set the fireworks off, and you can follow it around. Tilt your head and follow the launched fire works. Very cool! For the money this a great stocking stuffer for kids!

A great companion for the Merge VR Goggles
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Merge Cube allows users of the Merge VR Goggles to interact with games and other applications that support the Merge Cube. The Merge Cube works like a big cubed barcode. Once a Merge Augmented Reality application recognizes the Merge Cube from your rear facing camera, you can then use the Merge Cube to interact with the AR app you're in. It's really cool to be able to manipulate a real life object and have that reflect in the application you are using in AR. Just keep in mind that in order to get the best results out of the Merge Cube, make sure you are using it with the Merge VR Goggles and applications that support the Merge Cube. The Merge Cube by itself will not do anything other than act like a light paperweight.

Needed for the complete hands on VR experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I think this is a pretty cool add on for the VR experience but should already come included when you purchase a VR goggle. It is made of a firm foam product and is pretty much a big dice with AR scan codes on the sides to interact with apps on the Verge VR gogggles. It allows you to immerse yourself in the VR world with hands on interaction. Takes some getting used to as you have to keep your hands and or the cube in direct line of sight with the goggles or you lose connection with the app you are using. Worth getting if you want a full VR experience.
