Light Shines on the Darkest Hour

This is a dramatization of a true story concerning Winston Churchill's first month in office as prime minister and what it took for him to accomplish the saving of thousands of his troops stranded on a beach in France as Hitler's army invaded that country. Political intrigue at its best. Should be watched with Dunkirk (2017) for full effect.

Like most I didn't know that much about Winston Churchill. This outing gives a look into that short period of time just before WC was selected to be the PM and the Blitz. This is a very period correct piece and looked brilliant - Gary Oldman was without a doubt brilliant as well. For that reason alone, this flick should be in your collection!!!

Gary Oldman gave an outstanding performance. (He was hardly recognizable.) The other stars did not disappoint. This movie was wonderfully produced and offered a clear perspective into the tough situation and perilous waters that Winston Churchill was forced to bravely navigate in WWII. I watched the film again last night.

Very interesting historical drama about how Winston Churchill became PM at the start of WWII. Gary Oldman - who is virtually unrecognizable - plays Churchill and does an amazing job! Well worth seeing just for Oldman's performance, if not the great behind-the-scenes story. He definitely deserved the Oscar he was awarded.

The movie is of course 5-stars but so is the UHD. I was blown away by the HDR color on my Sony TV. Its much better than the Blu-ray. I am mad that the studio waited just a couple of months to make people buy the Blu-ray then releasee the UHD but if you have the money or can sell the Blu-ray it's worth the upgrade!!!!

This has a similar feel to Daniel Day Lewis' Lincoln. It takes a sampling of a time early on in Churchill's run as PM during WW2. Minimal action, high on drama with brief cuts to WW2 action to move the story along. Very interesting for those who are not well versed on what Churchill did for the Allies during WW@.

NOTHING less than awe-inspiring in what is now so much almost a forgotten story EXCEPT for all those who sacrificed from the "Last Great Generation", & as it all went down, amazing how a small country with Churchill running the motions made such an against-all-odds move & was NEVER (!) going to give UP!

I saw this movie in theaters and had to have it. It is an excellent movie that gives surprising insight into what it was like for Churchill when he was made Prime Minister during WWII. The Blu-Ray I purchased played the movie beautifully. I highly recommend this movie and the Blu-Ray medium.

I saw Darkest Hour in a theater when it was released and loved it. And it's just as good the second time around in the comfort of my own home. Gary Oldman deliver's a great performance in this fascinating character study as Winston Churchill. It would make a perfect double feature along with Dunkirk!

This is Gary Oldman? He deserved the Oscar, for sure. And this examination of a crucial point in history is outstanding. For details of the 4K transfer, check out the review at blu-ray.com. Those people know a lot more about technical stuff than I do, but the Dolby Atmos soundtrack is great.

An excellent story about Winston Churchill's rise to prime minister and how important that was to WWII. All of the acting was wonderful and characters developed well. The historical period was well represented. I thoroughly enjoyed the quality of the picture and wished it had continued on.

IMB reviewers would give you much better insight as to the historical accuracy of this movie, especially with Hollywood liberties. I found it to be very good! Excellent performances by the cast and just an all around great story about was was happening in England and their approach to WW2.

As a history nerd this movie was wonderful. I could see and feel the nerves and fear that Churchill was going through. The fact that he was not liked at all and was set up as a fall guy, and still he persevered with getting the troops off the beaches of France and lead England through the war.

By far one of the best historically accurate movies I’ve seen in a long time. The acting is so phenomenal that when you put it together with the make up, you completely forget it’s Gary Oldman and actually believe it’s Winston Churchill. If you are looking for great acting, look no further.

Incredible film and quite tense at times seeing The UK in a really scary time in History as the German war machine ravages it’s way through Europe. But Gary Oldman wow just how talented and incredible is he as Churchill!?

This is not my typical type of movie yet I enjoyed it thoroughly. It maintained my interest throughout. It's scary to think what the world may have been like had not Winston Churchill taken the bull by the horns in Great Britain.

The movie is a great period piece and very well acted. The set here comes with a Blu-Ray, DVD, and a digital copy for downloading to Movies Anywhere. Bonus features include the usual "making of" as well as a piece on Gary Oldman's preparation for the film.

One of the best actors of our time, Gary Oldman, brings Winston Churchill to life in a film that would make a great double feature with Dunkirk. Oldman's Academy Award was long overdue and much deserved. And the cinematography in this film is great, too!

I purchased "Darkest Hour [Blu-ray/DVD] [2017]" because I enjoy WWII genre films. The movie does a wonderful job depicting the challenges that England faced during WWII and how they dealt with them. The acting and cinematography were outstanding.

This is an excellent film detailing the life of Winston Churchill just before America would enter World War II. There are many dark moments in the film which look just fine in 4K— no black crush. Excellent.
