Niche Market Sound Bar KING! Look No Further!

I will keep this review short and sweet. This is the best sound from a sound bar I have ever heard! For me, there are two main factors when buying something like this. The build quality and the sound quality. The Definitive Technology Studio Advance Sound Bar (DTSA) is the standard for both of these things. I just GUSH every time I get to watch TV now. This sounds way bigger than it is. Everything comes well packaged and protected during shipping in a single box that weighed 54lbs!!!!!. Each component comes in its own "velvet" bag to protect the finishes rather than the plastic films we have grown accustomed to seeing from the consumer electronic market. Unique unboxing experience for sure! From the minimalist design language of the DTSA to the "forever" build quality this possesses, you will NEVER second guess yourself for this purchase. This fits in ANY room and blends in with your decor. When you unpack it, you will know you have quality. The McLaren of the sound bar kingdom! All sound bars will be measured against this for a long time.
The DTSA is a 5.1 channel sound bar model with virtual surround sound tech. This unit features nine discrete transducers and amplifiers with three one-inch aluminum dome tweeters, six three-inch oval drivers, and a separate eight-inch downward firing subwoofer 50W RMS w/ 100W peak. This gets very loud and I have to lower the sub because of HOA rules. In addition, the device offers 4K HDR passthrough, bluetooth, WiFi N, Toslink, and an HDMI ARC port. Finally, the sound bar includes Chromecast-enabled support which integrates well with the rest of my smart home Alexa and Google devices. The sub and drivers in the sound bar are second to none for the size and implementation. I now question if I will ever go back to the true audiophile experience of running wires and mounting speakers at their optimal positions. This gives any nice setup a run for its money. I am amazed at the powerful and accurate sound this produces.
Everything is so simple and intuitive in both design and function. Although, there will be a learning curve identifying what input the sound bar is in, as just individual LEDs light up and there is no screen. The remote is almost too simple and I was expecting some sort of app or something. I am not a fan of the material chosen for the buttons on the remote though. It gives what is like a rubbery "cheap" feel to an otherwise premium device. Fingerprint oils create shiny spots to an otherwise nice matte rubber finish. This rubber material scuffs easily but I do like that nothing can get into the remote from accidental spills or food.
There are three sound profiles optimized for Music, Movies, and Night viewing (which is one of my gripes) and you can only control how pronounced the "center" channel comes through. Initial setup was very surprisingly simple. Something of this level of sound must require an app or something right!? Nope, just plug it in, run it to the ARC HDMI port, and that is all. Sound quality is impeccable. Crisp highs and powerful tight clear bass that fills any room. EQ options are not great since you only get total control over the sound of a "center channel" and bass only. Not that it sounds bad, but I wish I could fine-tune this more. In my eyes, the "treble" is basically your "center" channel. Buying this, you essentially are getting 3 more HDMI ports in addition to what you have on your TV. This is great! Some may not need to "upgrade" to the latest TV because you need just one more HDMI port. All the latest audio profiles are supported.
The Verdict
This is obviously a niche market and if you are looking at it you should just get it. Go to Best Buy and listen to the various speakers and then listen to this. It will sell itself and it is so easy to setup it will make your life easier. For everyone else, this is the ear candy you always wanted in a luxury package. GET IT!

Being new to the Definitive Technology brand I was eager to see how well the 5.1 Channel Soundbar System with 8" Wireless Subwoofer stacked up against my current 15 year old Infiniti 3.1 Tower Speaker/Reciever Setup. Soundbars are sleek and sexy and I get the appeal, so I was eager to see if It could replace my current setup
I have to say that this soundbar was probably the easiest electronic device I've setup in a long time. It took less than 3 minutes to setup, very impressive. And the felt wrapping on the speaker, subwoofer and remote was a nice touch. Probably one of the nicer looking and designed remotes I've seen in a while, although its lacking a bluetooth pair button, which I'll get to later.
The sound quality is top notch on this unit, while it isn't "true" 5.1 it does a great job of encompassing you in the action with the way the speakers deliver the sound. I watched a few movies and played Apex Legends on it and the sound was very impressive. Music sounds great as well. I quickly switched back and forth between my speakers and the soundbar while playing bluetooth music and my wife preferred the soundbar over the towers. I had to agree with her in that department.
The ONE issue I have with this device is that it is not bluetooth phone friendly. I listen to alot of music during the day through spotify and youtube and primarily through bluetooth speakers. Any other bluetooth speaker in my house when I turn it on it immediately pairs with my phone, or if I click on the device in my bluetooth settings it will pair. With this soundbar I have had issues. Every time I want to use the device with my phone I have to physically walk over to the speaker and hit the pair button on the soundbar itself to get the device to connect to my phone. If i turn on the soundbar it doesn't auto connect and if I go to my bluetooth settings it wont pair either. I HAVE to get up and physically touch the button every time when I initially turn it on. And there is also not a bluetooth pair button on the remote itself. Now that may not seem like a big deal, but when a 50 dollar JBL speaker can do it, and every other bluetooth speaker I own can do it, a 1500 dollar Soundbar should be able to do it as well. I shouldn't have to get up out of my chair to connect my device. I do see there is an ability to update firmware with this device so I'm hoping that down the line they fix this issue.
Other than that one issue I really am happy with the soundbar. It has fantastic sound quality and an insane amount of clarity and power and it will be in my family room for years to come.

This is most definitely a 'Premium' Soundbar, from the packaging, to the price point, but that is also reflected in the build quality and the sound quality. Definitive Technology have left nothing on the table with this soundbar.
First off, the design: This is a very sleek and sumptuous soundbar. Its build quality is top notch, from the fit and finish of the case and the grill, to the aluminum endplates that look to be hewn from a solid block of aluminum. Aesthetically, it is very stylish and very pleasing to the eye. The only display are 12 dots that light up, 10 for the volume that represent 1-100 in increments. There's a blue one to denote Bluetooth paring, and also purple to denote night mode.
You get everything in the box you need for set up, including a wall mounting template, magnetic mounts to raise the soundbar on your entertainment unit, everything comes in sleek drawstring bags, enhancing the quality feel. The remote is simple, not extremely ergonomic, but it has a nice soft touch to it. It has all the controls you need, apart from Bluetooth pairing, which I wish was available on the remote.
Setting up the soundbar was a little more complicated than usual. You have to set it up using the Google Home App. That is one reason for the 4 star review. I am not crazy about the Google home automation ecosystem, so having to dig out my old app, and then set up the soundbar was tedious. That coupled with the Google App taking three times to connect to the app before it was recognized, was also frustrating. Finally, once the app had sync'd with the soundbar, things got better. Testing sound samples that were suggested by Google were strong, crisp and very clear with a fantastic amount of bass. The included, powered 8" wireless subwoofer is simply fantastic! It really is the show stealer with this soundbar. It's subtle, but in your face turquoise sub port is a refreshing design cue, mirrored with the marketing pieces that are surrounding the soundbar when you open it. The soundbar paired up instantly with the subwoofer and provided strong, crisp, effective bass, no matter where the subwoofer is placed in the room. It really is a superb subwoofer.
My other reason for the 4 stars and not 4 stars is the Bluetooth pairing. When I want to stream music from my phone to the soundbar,, I have to press the Bluetooth pairing button on the top of the soundbar. It doesn't show up automatically in my Bluetooth selection list in my phone. So there doesn't appear to be a quick way to connect to my phone, unless a setting isn't quite right. And then going through the Google App, I also had an issue with Spotify recognizing the soundbar. I had to force it to recognize it. Not a deal breaker, but an inconvenience.
The sound: This soundbar packs a punch, it has good, strong, crisp vocals from the adjustable center channel, and a good ambient sound from the other speakers. However, I don't get a true 5.1 surround feel from the soundbar. I really want to, and if I stand closer to the soundbar with my head above it, I get a better 5.1 surround sound effect, but sitting on my sofa in our mini media room, it is barely noticeable at all. I had high hopes for the sound, but it just isn't coming from behind me.
I have true 5.1 surround sound set up in my living room, and a dedicated 7.2 surround sound with Dolby Atmos in my main media room, so I know what to expect from surround sound. This soundbar is set up in my son's play/media room and it just isn't as defined as dedicated surround sound set ups.
That being said, it does enhance the sound of shows fantastically, over and above the TV speakers, and also has a far superior sound to other soundbars on the market, and other soundbars I have owned in the past. It really does deliver good sound, but it doesn't blow me away in the surround sound department.
I used DTS-HD Master Audio as my test base and then also a Dolby Atmos sound file, that did sound a lot better, even tho this soundbar is not Dolby Atmos enabled.
Overall, it really does have great sound, but just not the 'blow me away'5.1 surround I was expecting from it.

Sound bar would lockup every few days. Would have to hard reset to reconnect with Google home. Router (Asus GT-AX1100)was 3 feet away and gave it a fixed IP address using both 2.4 and 5 ghz bandwidths. customer support suggested 5ghz. when unit failed all the lights would flash on and then off. checked router and it was still showing soundbar connected with small amounts of data transmitting every so often.
FYI. no Google Home connection no sound! Wife said it had to go even though sound quality was great.
Customer support is useless. they couldn't tell me what all the lights flashing means and I couldn't find anything out online so I couldn't fix myself.
I have LIFX light bulbs, Smarthings with 40+ z-wave devices, 6 cameras, 2 access points, and an NAS and do everything on my own, so I should be able to setup a simple soundboard.
Based on my experience unfortunately the 800 bucks is still to much for the headache.

The Definitive Technology - 5.1 Channel Soundbar System with 8" Wireless Subwoofer is outstanding! It's stylish, well designed, feature rich, and most importantly, it delivers truly amazing sound quality that makes you feel like you're at the cinema.

It only takes minutes to setup the sound bar and subwoofer. The remote control allows you to navigate the menus easily and adjust sound settings on demand. Use your mobile device to setup the chromecast functions and wireless connectivity. It was incredibly fast to setup the system, less than 10 minutes.

This is one amazing soundbar. It comes securely packed in thick styrofoam, nothing out of the ordinary. What was impressive and unseen before, was that the soundbar and subwoofer came in a protective cloth bag; it was a nice change from all the plastic that comes in most electronic packaging. The soundbar and subwoofer are nice, solid and pretty to look at. The soundbar has a very modern look to it and has a little row of lights that indicate the level of the volume. To me, it’s a nice, simple look.
The set up was a bit of a pain. I have set up plenty of sound systems in the past - most of them are a “plug and go”. This one was not. I had some issues with the set up and got a bit frustrated during the process. I did get it set up, but continued to have some issues; although, I will say that the issues I had after the initial set up, I couldn’t determine if the issues were with the soundbar or the tv I was attempting to set it up with.
Once I got it hooked up, it was truly an amazing thing. The sound was superb. Like deafening, superb. The room was shaking that is how powerful that subwoofer is. This is where I ran into a hiccup - when I directly connected it to the TV, it worked for about 1 minute and then cut out. Again, I will reiterate, that I couldn’t confirm that this was an issue with the actual soundbar and not just with the TV I was using.
So I went to casting directly to the soundbar - again, perfect amazing sound, with depths of bass I didn’t know were possible. I tested out several different movies and music genres. For the movies, I did a scene from Avengers: Engame, Gone in 60 Seconds (Eleanor chase scene) and The Matrix (when Neo and Trinity storm the building to save Morpheus - lots of phew phew and tink tink). I will say that if the bass it up too high, the voice to drown out, or if you don’t change the setting from music, night or movie. But either way, the sound was beautifully clear and crisp.
The music test - I sampled several different genres of music to test the clarity of the vocals and the depth of the bass. To give you an idea of what I tested out, I played Slipknot, TuPac, Lil’Nas (because my kids wanted to know why I was shaking the house) Shania Twain and 2Cellos. I will say that I feel like this soundbar was made for music; as good as it sounded during the movie test, it really rocked the house with the music test. I also liked the ability to stream from my phone directly to it - that is a cool feature that I don’t have on my older soundbar.
Overall, I would say that this is a pretty amazing soundbar and I had a lot of fun running the gambit of tests to see what it could really do.

Nice and loud... Doesn't play nice with my TV

1st let me say that this sound bar sounds really good, plays nice and loud, has a respectable frequency response and looks pretty decent. I only gave it 3 stars because I couldn't get it to work correctly with my TV. The HDMI ARC would play sound, but the volume bar would flash across the top of the screen every 5 seconds even though I wasn't hitting the remote. I tried everything for almost 3 hours to get it to work. I replaced HDMI cables, I turned everything off and then back on, unplugged and plugged everything again and again. I tried every setting available to the TV or the sound bar and couldn't make it go away. Finally I resorted to using the optical cable and now it works but I have to use 2 remotes. Another reason I gave it 3 stars is the build quality. The subwoofer surround has large amounts of glue around it, and it is not centered in the basket, the large rolled rubber surround is misshapen and squashed slightly around about 1/4 of the driver. The subwoofer plays nice and loudly even at the factory setting, and the sound bar is well tuned also, I hit the music setting and played with adding more and less sub, and more or less center, and ended up tuning it right back to the factory settings. I placed my subwoofer in the front corner of the room and it is more than enough bass for movie explosions, or bass heavy music. The only gripe I have about the sound quality is a lack of punch to the mid bass, the surround bar drivers are to small to play loud mid bass. The sound is nice and clean even when played moderately loud, very enjoyable when pushed hard, and I didn't experience any listening fatigue even after jamming out for several songs . Overall I like this sound bar, I'm just not sure why I couldn't get it to work correctly... maybe t's my TV, but my old sound bar works perfectly on the same TV. I would recommend this to a friend if they wanted something compact but still capable of getting nice and loud while still sounding clean and un distorted.

Terrible piece of equipment. Definitive used to be a top player...no more. $1300 boat anchor. Definitive has replaced both the bar and the subwoofer and now the replacements don’t work. Now we’re outside of the warranty time limit and can’t get our money back. This thing is an absolute piece of crap, never keeps it sync, and is next to impossible to set up. Never again! If I was able to give a zero star review, I would.

Thought I was buying a high end soundbar. Not so much. I purchased on Black Friday. The sale price seemed good for a def tech product. Brought home and hooked up, and immediately had problems. You have to install google home and sync the soundbar with it to receive updates. Not happy with that. Video quality pass through was just ok. There are no ways of adjusting levels on the soundbar, just the three presets they have programmed. Wish you could actually have more adjustments for the price of the product.

This Definitive Technology sound bar speaks premium! From picking it up to setting it in your entertainment stand.
First thing to note is the sound bar and subwoofer got some heft to them, once you get them unpacked you can see the quality of material on the both of them! Setting up the wireless soundbar and subwoofer was painless, I just had to plug them both in, power on and away I went! The sound bar comes with the template and parts needed to mount to the wall, otherwise you can set it on your entertainment stand. There are a couple magnetic extensions to raise the sound bar off the surface.
The great thing about this soundbar that I did not know going in, is that you have a singles output to your television and 3 HDMI inputs with 4K HDR passthrough! Once you make sure ARC is enabled on your TV settings you can adjust the soundbar volume with your Television remote without any sort of programing. You also have Optical Audio as an option, I did notice a small delay when playing the Xbox through this output, but not through the HDMI passthrough.
You may also set up the sound bar in your google home allowing you to set up this as a device in your smart home system, which works great for streaming music while cleaning.
The sound of this bar is amazing, and the subwoofer gives you tons of bass. The Movie experience has been amazing, a couple movies I plan to pick up that I can't wait to test out such as endgame! I do use this set up much more for gaming and the 5.1 sound helps to create an immersive experience.
Only things to note at this time, I did have one instance of the volume continuously flashing on my screen when I turned my TV on, simply changing the input resolved this issue. Other than that my subwoofer did not connect, a simple power cycle on the sub fixed this. There is a USB port on the back for you to update your soundbars firmware and I am sure they will release updates to fix these small issues.
Definitive Technology spoiled me with this soundbar, when I switch to my other display with my previous soundbar I can notice the difference and the soundbar give you a premium sound experience in your home! One of the best soundbars I have used, would definitely suggest to anyone looking for a premium soundbar!

I have a Studio W in one room and it works great. I bought this one to pass 4K from my PS4. The reaction time for volume control is horrible. It randomly starts my PS4 for no reason, it doesn't work well with my universal remote, and I'm not getting 4K pass through..
If I hadn't already mounted it to the wall, I would be returning it.
I should've gotten the Denon or the Sony.
This soundbar is totally unacceptable.
Disappointed since the previous model Studio W works flawlessly.
