Picked these up as Open Box items after doing some research and listening to them in the Magnolia sound room. Definitely produces both the quantity and quality of sound needed to fill my small (14×14) living room and disturb the neighbors. The bass is absolutely incredible!

These are amazing speakers. The bass in them is perfect if you don't want anything to boomy. I payed $310 for each of them which I thought was a steal! The highs are great and the clarity you get is super!

I have had these speakers for ALMOST a month and so far so good. I returned an SC2000 that I intended to pair with my SM350s. Unfortunately the pairing didn't go nearly as well as one would hope. You can choose to read my review of the SC2000 if you wish, but my 2 main issues with it was that it had no phase control to truely sync it with a pair of bookshelf speakers and also that it had very localized bass being that it was coming from a 7 1/2 inch cone. So, with that said, on to my review for the bp8040s.
I am very pleased with how these speakers are coming to life after usage. I am actually quite shocked with how well the tiny 3 1/2 inch drivers do for their midrange clarity. The crossovers match perfectly with one another, shockingly. What I mean by this is the blending from the lower end of the tweeter to the higher end of the 3 1/2 mid and the lower end of the 3 1/2 mid to the 8 inch woofer. This allows for incredible volume and a full, but even, spectrum of sound while maintaining great clarity throughout.
The woofers coupled with the radiator do a very good job of providing powerful, tight, and accurate bass - everything you would look for. My ear does, though, hear a lot of PUNCH and not a lot of RUMBLE from these speakers as mentioned by another customer. It's true. They hit very hard - but they start to drown much higher than 25hz, although they do produce the sound....it's just not as impactful as the punchy spectrum. It's to be expected from an 8 inch cone, though. But I will personally still be looking for a dedicated woofer down the road, although many wouldn't see the need.
The only other cons I have from this pair is that the company has done away with using a left and right matched pair with this line and have made the same speaker used for both the left and right. To better explain - this means your woofer faces the left side for both the right and left speaker. I was told they did this because it's EASIER FOR THE COMPANY! If a right speaker was returned without the left, it offset their stock and it was such a sad time for the multimillion dollar company- blah blah blah. For shame. So, because it's easier for the company, your right speaker has a leftward facing subwoofer, which is sadly, AWAY! from the wall. This obviously makes no sense. Because of this I have to fine tune the bass for the right speaker to compensate for sound not bouncing off of any walls...utterly crazy concept. It's turned up almost two times as much as the left just to compensate!
My other con - not as serious because it DOES come with rubber feet - but the carpet spikes are close to useless, at least mine were. The spike and the nut that surrounds the spike are independent of each other. After usage, they started to become loose from the bass. This caused a HORRIBLE buzzing sound from the spikes which took DAYS to localize by me. I was happy to find that it was just the spikes, though - being that it would be an easy fix.... But nonetheless, an obvious design flaw if it causes a horrendous buzz when certain bass tones are made.
At any rate, enough with the rant but I believe everyone should know the CONS of ANYTHING that others have found in a review. But, the speakers are well worth it. They provide great quality for movies and music alike. They pair well with my sm350s in the rear. And they give good quality stereo sound when necessary. All is well. I'm pleasantly surprised and will continue cranking them.
Thanks for the read!

A peerless speaker

I have owned many types and brands of speakers in the last forty years, and none of them had the performance offered by these. The airiness and spaciousness of the sound is truly remarkable. You will hear demon trumpets and wizard trombones. They are not inexpensive, but you will never need to buy another speaker, and nothing in my experience matches them. By the way, I noticed another reviewer's comment about the difficulty of installing the screws for the stabilizer feet. I solved that problem by overboring the pilot holes slightly.

I hooked up 2 Def Tech BP-8040ST's, 2 Def Tech ProMonitor 800 in the rear and a Def Tech ProCenter 1000 to my Onkyo TX-NR808 . The sound is amazing, these speakers are a great value for the price. I love the fact they have the built-in powered sub woofers as well, no need for a separate sub that I really don't have room for anyway. Great idea Def Tech! I honestly couldn't be happier with the performance of these speakers.

These speakers cannot be beat at the discontinued sale price. Nothing at a similar price point even comes close. The bipolar design does actually hit you with a wall of sound, it's not just marketing schtick. The built-in subs are icing on the cake, especially if you don't already have a dedicated one. The mids & highs are super defined and precise. Having 2 subs in the room produces plenty of tight & clean & loud bass. My only criticism is that they don't go as low a good quality dedicated sub. These bottom out at about 30Hz, where a good HT sub should get down to at least 20Hz if not 16Hz. So there is still reason for a dedicated sub if that is your thing. After I got these speakers, they made my existing center (Mirage FRx) and cheap Onkyo surround speakers sound flat, so I went back out and got the matching C-8040HD center and SR-8040BP surrounds, all at the discounted sale price. Couldn't be happier with this setup.

I really did not know anything about definitive technology speakers i liked
the way they looked but after purchasing them i am glad i did, first when i got them home they are really impressive looking and the install was very easy i thought i needed a y cable and two sub cords.but the way the speakers are designed when you connect the speaker wires it will pick up
the signal from that for your subs.these are awesome speakers.buy them
as soon as you can.

i bought these speakers and used them for about 6 days. i notice its a good speaker for a medium sized room at low levels. i notice the highs from the tweeters are clear and full of color. i notice the midrage speakers sound great too , they could sound a little fuller but that may be due to my poineer elite recievers settings. i feel the woofers are sensitive, the dial in the back is sensitive, the lows are not overly full and low but if you look at the specs the speaker is rated to 25hz. the bass radiators work perfecly. the only problem i have with these speakers overall , is the bass at higher levels sounds great , but wether high levels or low levels of volume, the bass seems to be a bit punchy. alot of punch for the bass more so then the actuall smooth blends of bass . but dont get me wrong the radiators do a great job at attempting to fill the bass , in my opinion its just not enough wether in a suround sound setting , which does do a great job, or in a music setting which , seems to need more in that field. so i upgraded to the bp8060st and it cured the problem.also as a note i play online games and the blasts and explosions sound very punchy also. simply noted these very fine speakers produce an excessive amount of punch, so when i play games i turn the bass all the way down to the minnimum setting.

My son has five BP-8080ST speakers plus matching center channel, I was very impressed with the clarity and quality of his system, I wanted a more reasonable system with a similar sound within my budget. These speakers are great sounding with clean deep bass. The price and value are excellent especially since a separate subwoofer is not needed.

I am really impressed by the sound quality and really prefer the built in subs to having the extra piece of furniture in the room. I am very aware of the compromises that this means for speaker location, but with modern room correction built into receivers today, I believe the sound quality and balance is excellent.

I have popped in movie after movie since buying these speakers and I'm still floored by the sound. The bipolar technology, with each speaker having forward and rearward facing mid/treble, makes for an incredible movie watching experience. I thought the bipolar design would muddy the distinct channels of digital surround. Instead, it seems like I'm surrounded by sound like I should be, with each speaker accurately positioning the sound effects around me. On the low end, each tower has a built-in 300W amp, 8" sub in a sealed chamber with 2 additional bass radiators. There is far more bass than I can use in my apartment. On the rare occasion I do turn up the boom dial, the bass is still just as clean and effortless and it takes on the most demanding soundtracks with ease.
If you like music, set these in 2-channel mode on your receiver and you'll be quite pleased. The sound is different than what you'll hear from a traditional speaker though so it may not be right for everyone's taste. I do think most people that hear these will love them.
I had considered the 8060 model but there just wasn't a big difference in the sound...at least in the demo room I visited. I actually preferred the sound of these 8040's after a 2nd visit to the store. In fact I preferred these speakers over other brands that were much much more expensive.
I also have the DefTech 8060 center channel (built-in 8" powered sub) and 8040BP bipolar surrounds (free with the towers and center channel). This combo together was a HUGE upgrade over the polk speakers i had loved before. Now I actually prefer watching movies at home instead of the theater.

these are expensive for a reason. highs and mids are crisp and bass is deep and punchy. physically I find these extremely attractive. I came from a pair of vintage Polk towers that took up 3 times the real estate but yet couldn't compete with the sound quality. my recommendation is sell your old speakers and upgrade to any of definitives new bp 8000 series. highest recommendation possible
