One of the worst laptops I have ever purchased. I'm not even sure where to begin - first the fans are loud, not just slightly loud but a hairdryer on full blast makes less noise. I've tried to use this laptop in an office environment and it disturbs people to the point of asking if there's anything I can do to fix it. The power brick is giant - its not far off the same size as the laptop. The alien ware application is pretty useless - unless you just want to change the lighting - that's all it really does (no performance tuning). Don't even think about using the sleep functionality - on a brand new install (without applications) the laptop constantly switches itself on every 20 mins, and since the fans are so loud you know its switched itself on. This causes problems if you keep it in a laptop bag since the bag starts to heat up to the point that it becomes painful to remove the laptop without burning yourself. Unless you are going to keep the laptop switched on, and basically act like a desktop system - just don't waste your money and time - I'm only 3 months in using it and I'm already looking for a new laptop to replace it.... hopefully it will function better as a doorstop.

This is my 2nd Dell computer that I bought due to reviews on YouTube. My first Dell was an Inspiron 5000 that my wife uses that I got during Black Friday in 2019. It took me a while to decide on either this Dell G7 15 vs 17" vs a Lenovo Legion 15 or 17". The high resolution OLED 15" Display is what made the difference as I intended to use this laptop to edit and create 4k videos for YouTube. It does not disappoint. Screen is bright and clear, its fast, tech support helpful, and per reviews will hopefully be very durable.

Build quality is great. The keyboard is amazing and it is a great value compared to the other gaming laptops on the market. Could deal without the LEDs on the front, but you can just turn them off. The finish is also a lot more clean than the Alienware versions which is almost the same underneath. The OLED screen is great, just wish it was a higher refresh rate.

The specs make this look like it’s a beast, but it is full of problems, at least in my experience. All I did was install Fortnite and when I tried to play, it was getting terrible FPS. We are talking between 40 and 50 FPS with all settings at medium. Meanwhile the fans are going 100%, the game was lagging bad. So I hooked up and ran only on a dell 144mhz display at 1440 res. Still no good. If the best I can get is 50 FPS avg on medium settings rather I can get that on a MacBook Pro 16” so this is going back and finding something else. Even just watching YouTube videos kept the fans running. No bueno for a laptop that cost this much. I think it’s overspec’d what with not enough thought given to heat management if the fans are required to run full sprint every time you try to do something.

      JabberwockyBaby,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear that your gaming laptop is not fully meeting your needs. Here are some tips to help with your system's overall temperature:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃.

If you'd like to see if you can reduce the fan noise, we'd suggest the following:

      Update the BIOS:

An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2ENlXfz.

It's also important to check the default settings on the game that you are playing on your new computer and make sure that they are setup according to the capabilities of your computer.

We hope these tips help your computer perform better for you.

      Best,
      Bryan

So far ok. Running display through secondary monitor. Primary monitor on laptop randomly shuts off as if going into power saving. No remedy for this even in power settings or with latest driver updates. Known problem for Dell laptops it appears - many similar comments online. Only solution is to close screen and reopen or simply run through a secondary monitor, which was the original plan here anyway, but that makes it far less like a laptop and more like a desktop.

Great specs, just not good enough cooling solution for full throttle factory cpu usage. Intel's 10750 at full tilt will easily thermal throttle(@100C!), and undervolting is BIOS locked. Not great for prolonged gaming out of the box! Very disappointing considering this is marketed towards gaming.

      Hello BrandonT,

Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that your laptop is running a little warmer than you would like. Your feedback is sincerely appreciated. If system thermals are of concern, you can prioritize cooling by opening the Alienware Command Center application that came pre-installed with your device and select the 'Cool' thermal profile. You can view the full article here - https://dell.to/2XAULtU.

Keep in mind that our G7 follows Intel performance design guidelines, which can lead CPU temperatures to reach 100°C to output top in-game performance. We fully warrant the product under these conditions. If you see CPU temperatures rising beyond 100°C on Alienware Command Center, you are more than welcome to contact Dell support for further assistance at 1-800-264-9896.

      Best regards,
      Wendy C. Dell

Best purchase so far has been useful for my everyday necessities, and as always use it for stocks have noticed the screen is very clear battery doesn't last the longest I hope battery holds, long term. I have it plugged in most of the times but I let it use regular battery I also use it with monitor works like a champ.

Bad for me that I had to get a laptop quickly - during a pandemic when everyone is working from home, just after tax free weekend (so back to school shopping had occurred), and there were limited options in stock that fit my needs. Good for me that this beauty was in the store. It's got everything I need and more for work, and play.

It works - but very heavy - I do not use it for games but for my professional work. The battery charger is very heavy and too bulky too. Found after a lot of experimentation that print screen works only when operated with the function button pressed simultaneously - The advantage is one can select and highlight the area that is copied to paste it on paint or word file etc.

The picture quality of the OLED display is amazing. With the 6 core/hyper-threaded CPUs there is plenty of power to run several applications in parallel. I can run our biometrics software which is highly threaded and maintain great compare speeds using both the CPU and GPUs to do the compares. Exactly what I needed.

Oled screen is really nice and awesome. Since the hdmi port is connected to the nvidia gpu, you have an option to connect it to an external monitor if needed. I returned it cuz my kid wanted the Dell g7 17.3 instead. Custom RGB feature is cool. You can custom your KB to multi colors same with the horizontal one.

They did not disclose that it was a display model, and have had the promotional popup from being on display since I bought it. Have received 0 assistance from Geek Squad, Management, or anyone else in getting the screen popup fixed, and had I known it was a store model, I would not have bought it. The graphics would be great if I wasn't seeing DELL, prices, and qr codes all over the screen, and the fans are way too loud- I cannot bring this computer to college classes, it is loud enough to be completely disruptive. The battery also only lasts about 30 minutes from full charge, which feels way too low, even for a gaming laptop. I would have returned it, If I wasn't told when I bought it that I couldn't because it was discounted.

I love this laptop! I was looking for a mid range gaming laptop that wasn’t a hassle to travel with. This fits the bill perfectly. It is paired with a 55” TV at home, the profile is perfect for my space. When I’m traveling it is light weight and easily packable. Great machine for the price. The only downside is that it does run hot, it’s easy to put it on a cooling stand at home but the heat does pose more of an issue when away from home.
