Customers are saying

Customers are positive about the graphics and performance of the G7 15.6" Gaming Laptop, with many praising its ability to run high-intensity games smoothly. However, customers are negative about the heat generated by the laptop, noting that it gets hot quickly even during basic tasks, and some experiencing thermal issues. The fan noise is also a point of concern for some users. Overall, the positive aspects of gaming performance are offset by significant concerns regarding heat and fan noise.

I love the 300hz screen for gaming and my kids love the RGB keyboard and front. Got an unbeatable price on a certified open-box. It does get very hot and I've considered a laptop chiller but when viewing the actual temperature with speccy it's no where near maxed on, just has a hot spot just above the middle of the function keys.

I was shopping for a low-end to mid-range gaming laptop that would be reasonably portable. Right now I'll be using it primarily for gaming (at home), but I wanted something that I could take overseas for school in the near future, and to use it for work as well if necessary. I probably won't need to bring it to class (I have a Surface Go for that), but could end up taking it out with me now and then depending on what I'm doing. 15.6" is the absolute maximum size that I figured would fit comfortably in my backpack, so I was looking at anything at that size or smaller. After browsing a bunch of new RTX 3060-based laptops and not quite being happy with the deals, I started looking at the previous generation hardware. I spotted what seemed like a too-good-to-be-true open box deal on this - less than a grand! When it showed up, the packaging job wasn't exactly confidence-inspiring, but I was pleasantly surprised. The laptop was in great condition, no damage, and spotless after a quick wipedown. Build quality is excellent. Dell is usually pretty good about that these days, and this is no exception. A little heavier in the hand than a typical laptop, but the extra weight is not really noticeable in my backpack. Surprisingly slim for the hardware it is packing. It seems far less bulky IRL than it looks in the pictures. It actually fits quite well in my backpack. They certainly didn't cut any corners on the display; colors are bright and well-defined. I would have been happy with much less than the 300 Hz refresh rate (and most games won't come close to hitting that without an eGPU), but it sure is smooth. The bezels are nice and slim on three sides. Overall it's so much nicer than my Acer monitor on my desk that I don't even want to plug it in! Keyboard is fine, but not quite as nice to type on as my Dell Latitude work machine; however, the touchpad is nicer than any PC laptop I can recall. Almost too nice, given that people would likely be using an external mouse when gaming, but a nice perk nonetheless for everyday browsing and/or work tasks. There are two important things that really made the deal that you usually won't see with brand new gaming laptops around the $1000 price point - a Thunderbolt 3 port and a 6-core i7 processor. Most of the new 11th-gen/RTX3060 machines I was initially looking at for several hundred dollars more came with a quad core CPU. Anything new at this price point (and of course any AMD system) was not packing a TB port either. With this, I can hook up a lot more high-speed storage if I need it, or an eGPU in the future when the 2060 ages out of viability. Also somewhat less important, but nice, was the inclusion of a dedicated DisplayPort 1.4 port so I can plug in a Rift S. This machine apparently had some thermal throttling issues when it was released, but Dell has fixed them with BIOS and driver updates, and I haven't seen any performance issues in my testing. Don't get me wrong, it does get pretty hot at high load. The cooling system is loud, but I'll be using an over-ear headset for gaming most of the time anyway. I'm actually mildly impressed with the performance of the RTX 2060 in this setup. I saw a solid 70-80 FPS in Warzone with the GeForce Experience optimized settings, and pushed up to around 90 with DLSS on Balanced. No Man's Sky was around 60. Overwatch goes anywhere from 120 to 200+ depending on the action. The GFN presets almost all come out at High/Ultra, so of course there are gains to be had by tweaking things down or picking a lower quality preset level if desired. All in all, I have to say that my expectations were exceeded. I wouldn't be so impressed with it at full price, but if you spot an open box or refurb deal, don't hesitate! I was worried that I would regret not buying the newest stuff, even with it being $500+ more, but now that I have this model in-hand and have taken it for a spin, I feel good about the decision and plan to hang on to it.

Great laptop with good specs. I use for gaming and home office tasks. Fan does get a little loud but works well. Top center of laptop does get a little hot when playing intense graphic type games. Screen is a little wobbly due to the way it is attached. Webcam is not the best at 720p. But otherwise this laptop is very good and serves our purposes.

      Hello Jeremy,

Thank you for your feedback and review. We apologize for the issues you have with fan noise, screen, camera quality, and overheating of your laptop. We really do appreciate your feedback and will use it to help improve our current and future products. We would recommend checking to ensure that the latest BIOS is installed on your system. There was a BIOS update for this series released in the middle of April and you can download the update here - https://dell.to/3tAQ4PI. We hope this helps with any fan noise and overheating issues that you are experiencing.

      Best regards,
      Wendy C.

My initial impression after running some intense games is that this is a great laptop. The keys feel nice, the size and weight are good, and it runs high-intensity games well. The only downsides I would say are that the fans get quite loud and the laptop gets very, very hot rather quickly. Overall if you can manage to keep it cool with some additional assistance from external fans or a cooling pad it should be good for a while.

Great experience thus far. Laptop is fast, responsive, and handles my work and play use well. The only complaint is that the fan gets loud on occasion even when not taxing the machine but that is expected when gaming but not when doing something like writing a review on Best Buy and that being the only thing you are doing at the time.

I really wanted this laptop. I got it for such a great deal on sale. This is the i7-10750h with 16gb ram and 512 gb ssd. The gou is the 2060. Not a max q. But the thing just keeps dumping fps everytime I get into a game. Cant even fet into a game without it dropping. Dont really know what is going on. Did everything Dell suggested with the bios update and even played around with the settings but sure enough everytime I have to shutdown and turn on again it just dumps fps. You know when cars have issues especially with even 5% of their specific product in a certain line, they do recalls or offer buybacks to make the consumers happy and do the right thing. With expensives electronics that dont work correctly and if its got to do something with the mfg settings, they should offer some sort of reprise. I just dont understand how Dell. Could let this laptop and its series put into retail stores knowing that there is no permanent fix. Its just a money grab. I called tech support and they wanted another $99 to get expert tech support on the phone to further inspect. This laptop is only a week old. And I am not obliging to the extra fee for further assistance. So if this issue isnt solved by doing all the necessary steps Dell has suggested, I am unfortunately going to have to bring this back. Such a waste of a “good looking” product. I cant recommend this to anyone even if you are tech savvy. I gave the Dell g7 7500 model with the 300hz panel. Thing looks incredible but it just doesnt work. The 1 star is for Dell. Not for Bestbuy. You cant expect Geek squad to fix something that the mfg cant solve.

      Gigabyte,

Thanks for your review and we're very sorry to hear about the experience that you've had with your new G7 laptop so far. We understand that you have tried updating the BIOS on your computer but we would recommend trying to download this version to see if it helps - https://dell.to/3CWDKOj.

If you continue to experience problems with your system freezes we'd recommend the following:

      1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
      2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
      a) Start the computer.
      b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
      c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
      d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
      e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete step 3 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
      3. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tW5m33.

      Best,

The Dell G7 surprises you when it comes on with the fancy flashing lights that really gets you into the mood of gaming. The speed and effectiveness of this i7 really provides non-stop pleasure as it can handle a ton of data/graphics for any game you choose to play. The only drawback about these devices is they are extremely heavy.
