Customers praise the G7 15.6" Gaming Laptop's performance, graphics capabilities, and build quality. Many appreciate its price point and the included solid-state drive, although some find the storage capacity limited. However, the laptop's weight and potential for elevated fan noise during use are frequently cited as drawbacks. Battery life is generally considered acceptable, though opinions vary.

With a 256 Gigabyte SSD this machine has almost zero latency when running games. What it lacks in storage space it makes up for in Processing power. A super fast wireless card enables fast cloud storage making it good for school and business as well. Nvidia GTX 1060 is the best graphics card I've ever owned, rendering smooth buttery textures at high fps.

I do not know a lot about computers, so I compared all the specs and saw this was comparable to the higher end laptops. Purchased for my son and he is so happy with the laptop. He said it does not lag with his online games like his other Dell did. He also said he never knew “the trees moved in Fornite” because the graphics are great.

I bought this laptop for the enhanced video capabilities that were lacking on my current laptop. I love the quick boot-up with the solid state drive, and the back-lit keyboard. Probably not the absolute best for the serious gamer, but I use it for Zwifting on my smart trainer, and the experience is VERY immersive.

Although this laptop has great performance specs for the price, be aware that this laptop as well as many other Dell products are not built for longevity nor reliability; if you need a laptop for work, school, or anything that requires a dependable system, there are many similar alternatives that may better suit your needs. I purchased this laptop around 4 months ago, and for the first few months everything went smoothly. Unfortunately, a few days ago the laptop stopped recognizing the AC adapter and prevented the battery from being charged. Although an AC adapter failing after only 4 months is not favorable, this happens quite frequently with many laptops and as such I was not too concerned. I decided to simply order a new adapter and continue using the laptop as I have done in the past. Yet, when I powered on the laptop with the faulty AC adapter plugged in, I was confronted with a warning that, due to the adapter being unrecognized, the CPU performance will be adjusted to compensate for the lack of power. After loading into Windows, the computer was throttled to the point where even moving the mouse across the screen would result in skipping frames and temporary freezing. I am a software developer and engineering student, and as such I use my computer heavily for work and school. I had to take off of work and spend the day transferring files to an old computer as the CPU throttling is so intense that I cannot even test my own code. At this point, I called Dell support to see what could be done, and they walked me through system diagnostics and bios updates which did not fix the problem, so they decided to send in a repair order, concluding that it must be a problem with the DC port in the laptop itself. Frustrated with their diagnosis that my laptop hardware was failing after only 4 months, I decided to visit a friend who had a similar 180 watt Dell AC adapter to be sure it was indeed the laptop that was causing the issue and not the DC port. As soon as I plugged it in, the laptop charged normally as the throttling disappeared. I immediately ordered a replacement AC adapter on Amazon and am currently waiting for it to arrive. Yet, had I listened to Dell support and sent in my laptop, I would have been without my laptop for up to 14 days (as it seems all of their repair centers aren’t in the US) to determine that all I needed was a simple AC adapter. I did some research on the issue as well, and there are many, many posts all over the internet describing an identical issue with Dell chargers shorting out, and some describe sending in their laptops (as per Dell technical support’s recommendations) to have the motherboard replaced, only for the issue to return due to the adapters failing again. Many users even stated that they have gone through 5-6 adapters in only 1-2 years, and for those who aren’t on warranty? Dell will not provide them for you, and they cost anywhere between $40-$60 each, and generic adapters of the same wattage and size will not work as Dell is one of the only companies to implement a detection method in the DC port that will throttle your computer if the adapter is not recognized as their own. In conclusion, I’d have to agree with the final remarks of most users who have described similar issues with Dell products: I would look elsewhere if reliability is important to you. And for $1000, I think it should be.

my old laptop was slow. I bought tis dell laptop quite a few months ago and have loved it. I don't carry it around, so if you do...its quite heavy. its powerful and that's what I was looking for. the weight never mattered to me since I also have an Ipad that serves the on the go purpose.

I bought an open-box model, but it came in very clean. My only complaint is the screen came with full or smudges, nothing terrible and it all came off easily. Overall very happy with the performance, but it does get hot quick.

Overall good laptop - issues on memory upgrade

Bought a G7 i7 8Gb 256SSD unit. Positive: - overall quality, well built + tough chassis - breezing fast CPU+GPU - well balanced cooling system (performance + silent + low temps) - has all the ports one could need - easy access to upgrade (just 1 screw) Downside so far: - 2 x 4Gb is a joke and/or warehouse sale. You pay less to buy the laptop but much more to upgrade, because you'll have to buy 2 x 8Gb and only Dell memory modules (Hynix) are compatible. It should be 1 x 8Gb. - incompatibility with most used memory modules (search the web for "dell G7 memory issues") - cheap and slow 256Gb m.2 stock SSD (Toshiba ksg60zm, slower than ordinary non m.2 SATA SSDs) - some power throttling (coolers are OK but not enough for Intel 8750H max turbo TDP, so I just opted for disabling it) - touchpad (OK for gesture + tapping, too stiff + noisy for clicking) Meh: - some thermal throttling (undervolting -0.150V solves it) - display OK (mine is an LG unit, clear and bright enough for me when using maxing brightness indoors, some say it has poor color coverage, though) - good keyboard layout, but keys are bit shallow and mushy - Max 4h battery (I knew it... but why not keeping the old 76Wh?) - no fingerprint reader - sound is OK, but not great - slow SD card reader (20-25 Mb/s even with 100Mb/s cards) G7 is a really good entry-level gaming laptop, but DELL must understand that gamers like to upgrade memory by themselves using the most renown memory modules, not just with DELL parts (they are rather more expensive). With price dropping it's even more bang for the buck. Now, I'd rather buy the 16Gb model.

If you need a gaming computer or a machine that can handle rendering this'll meet or exceed the base level requirements. I've used it to do renderings and game. Absolutely full of bloat so you'll spend some time uninstalling. If you buy this base model you can add another SSD or an HDD of whatever size you want and potentially upgrade the RAM (up to 32 even) I bought this knowing that it was a Max Q 1060 and that it'd take a little hit on performance because the price was right. The marketing is super deceptive though so don't be fooled into thinking you're getting a real 1060. The fans blow at even the slightest overload which I'm fine with. it really isn't that loud. If you want an ultra quiet laptop you're gonna have to spend more. I got mine open box which cut the price and it was on sale at the time - wait for the deals.

The g7 offers great value with NVIDIA 1060 graphics, and a 8th gen i7. Storage is slight, but easily upgradeable - I got a 2tb SSHD for less than $85 and installation was a snap. One slight downside - corners are non rounded, and can be a pain.

I purchased this laptop for gaming specifically but also to use for other common tasks. This laptop is able to play AAA gaming titles with ease at medium to high graphics settings. This laptop is an absolute workhorse for the price and performs better than expected. Handles multitasking with ease and is able to handle simple everyday tasks without the slightest problem. The laptop does a fairly decent job at cooling as well, at very power hungry gaming sessions the GPU will remain at an average 64-69 degrees Celsius. I am very happy with this product and look forward to exploring all other possibilities it can handle. I do recommend purchasing a laptop cooling pad as well, this is just a smart decision to help keep down internal temperatures with maximum performance and extend the life of internal electronics.

I purchased this laptop to replace my Optiplex 990 which has been a reliable desktop, but at 8 years old, is time to retire. I had three laptops to choose frome at Best Buy - the Acer Nitro 5, an Inspiron 17" 2 in 1, and this G7. Looking at the Nitro 5, I was severely disappointed in how cheap and flimsy it felt. The price was very attractive, but I'm not a fan of plastic body laptops. The Inspiron was the size and form factor I wanted, but the MX250 Graphics card, I really have not found alot of information about, so couldn't make a very educated decision. Otherwise, I would have walked out the door with this machine. Then I saw the G7. I played around with the keyboard and checked out the specs. I could live with the 8GB of RAM, which would last long enough to boot the machine to make sure I didn't get a DOA. Then out with the 2x 4GB sticks and in with 2x 16GB sticks. I have a GTX 1050TI with 4GB or RAM in my Optiplex and it has served me quite well. So, I knew the GTX 1060 would be a good choice with its 6GB of GDDR5 RAM. Sold. While the 256GB SSD is undersized, it, too, will be replaced with a 1TB NVME SSD along with a second 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD in the 2.5" HDD bay. The more I looked over this machine, the more and more I liked it. Well, there was one thing I didn't like and it may seem nit-picky, but it was the only thing that stopped me from giving this laptop a 5 star rating. This, of course, has to do with the inclusion of Thunderbolt on the laptop. I have a Dell Docking Station that would have worked fine with the 17" Inspiron, but does not work as intended with the G7. It will let you connect the computer to a Thunderbolt Docking Station, but will not charge nor start the computer from the docking station power port. In fact, when you boot the system, you are greeted by a warning stating that you have connected the docking station to a port that will not charge the device. This means you will be required to plug in the included 180W power brick in addition to using the Docking Station, which will power your keyboard, mouse, devices, and monitor. The other drawback is the position of the Thunderbolt port means you have to find a creative solution to using it. Not Cool, Dell. Not Cool! I would have really liked to see the thunderbolt port placed on the left side of the computer, even if it meant losing one of the other USB ports. And I would have definitely preferred to have the ability to charge from the Thunderbolt port as with the Precision and Latitude series machines. Lastly, I would have like the option to power on the device from the docking station, rather than having to open the lid and reach back to push the Power button. BUT! If you don't intend to use a docking station, and simply play as a laptop, I had a very hard time finding problems with this machine. For best Results, pair with a Wireless Corsair Gaming Mouse connected to Bluetooth! PROS: i7 8750H 8th Gen 6-core Processor, GTX 1060 w/ 6GB, 15" 1080P screen, Ethernet, 4x USB 3, and 1x Thunderbolt port CONS: Thunderbolt port is on the right side of the laptop, does not support charging from a dock, does not allow power from he dock.

This is a wonderful little gaming machine. It's not going to win any outright graphics shootouts, but it provides tremendous value for the money. Some of the shipping configurations do vary, from what I've read online. Mine, for instance, had 2 sticks of RAM, meaning I'll have to spend more when upgrading, and my SSD was a slower SATA 3 based m.2, but it's still pretty quick. I also had to do a warranty claim for the battery, as it dropped to 70% capacity (battery health) within ~30 charge cycles. Dell was super helpful with the warranty claim, though, and sent me a new (refurb) battery right away (letting me replace and send back the old one). Overall, a really good experience from Dell.

I bought this machine for multi-purpose, video editing, photo editing and of course gaming. In comparison to an older i7, this machine dances circles around it. The processor and video card make a huge difference when doing video editing(Premiere). Video games are fantastic as well. There are too many Pros to list. The only cons are: Lack of Ram Lack of SSD Space That being said those are easy upgrades. For the sale price you'll find it hard to find a better machine. Although my main reason for the purchase was video/photo editing, Mac fell off my list when I was looking at the processors that they have. The processor in this machine, is found in a $2200 Mac. Don't get me wrong, the Mac's are nice, just not that nice.

I bought this laptop after a lot of research for an entry level gaming computer that I could use for a work, surfing and gaming. I did purchase this unit as an open box geek certified unit that was flawless when I received it an included everything you would typically receive with a brand new unit. It looks and performs as new at a dramatically reduced price. At $800.00 for these specs, it was an absolute steal. This thing is very fast, runs cool and plays games smoothly. For the price, performance and upgrade ability of this laptop, I feel it is a great value for what you get. It has more than exceeded my expectations.
