It is a decent android tablet. Does the job if you are casually browsing, watching youtube videos, and do some non- cpu/gpu intensive gaming. Given the price, one of the better choices out there. Battery life is good, with occasional use, goes 2-3 days without charging. Well built, cameras are good. My daughter loves it, my son, though, thinks it is slower than his Asus [MemoPad 7]. Apps open up slower than Asus, but when using the app, I don't see apparent difference.

The Dell Venue 8 3840 has a nice, clean design and a good hi-res display. It works excellently for me as a reader because in horizontal mode I can get the print size up to where it is easy for me to see, even on a standard web page. The Dell wireless charging cradle, which I ordered separately, charges the tablet right through the portfolio case. I've also ordered the Dell Cast dongle, but haven't received it yet. If possible I will add that to this review later.
One of the reasons I chose the Dell is because it supposedly runs a "native" install of Android 4.2.2 Kit Kat. But in whatever way this may be true, it doesn't behave the same as 4.2.2 Kit Kat on my Moto-G Google phone. On the Moto-G, Kit Kat runs flawlessly and seamlessly, never getting overloaded in memory. I can have any number of apps and pages open at once, and the phone can quickly switch between them without a glitch. On the Venue 8 however, it seems that Dell has "customized" the Android installation, and my experience is that whenever a manufacturer does that it becomes some degree of a compromise. For whatever reason, the Venue 8 is not nearly as smooth as the Moto-G, although both have 1G system memory.
For example, The Venue 8's Google Android OS does not play well with the Google Chrome browser - if you can imagine that. Whatever has been modified makes Chrome glitchy and apt to freeze. I had to abandon it in favor of Firefox. The Dell also didn't like the app EverNote, which I think came pre-installed. Once I uninstalled it things suddenly got much better. Still, I have to be careful how many apps I leave open at once, or the tablet will begin to overload and slow down. Sometimes I'll need to reboot to clear it. I never have this problem on the Moto-G, even though it's also busy running the phone apps in the background.
This is my first tablet, and it would be interesting to get my hands on a Google Nexus, just to see how that behaves comparatively. But the Dell is good for what I use it for. Even the single speaker sound is good quality, and HD video plays seamlessly. So my complaints are minor ones, and generally I think the Dell was a good choice. If the Dell Cast works as advertised, this could be even more fun. And then we'll see what happens when Google/Dell bumps the OS up to Android 5.0...

Decent screen resolution for a budget tablet but the 1GB ram hinders the speed and often overwhelms it. If its to watch movies or youtube videos then you should be fine. Otherwise invest in a better tablet. The kids have the previous version 3830 that has the 2GB ram making it a better choice despite a lower resolution screeen.

I bought this tablet from an extremely knowledgeable associate at the Bradenton Florida location. He spent a lot of time with me going over the processors and features of all the tablets in my price range. I had just broken my prized nexus 7 2nd gen and was looking for something similar. The screen on this tablet is great and bright. The tablet is light and easy to handle. The micro SD card slot is a great feature which makes storage upgradeable for cheap! I was super excited to use it but quickly realized it could not handle more than one or two open tabs on chrome with a few other programs running. It bogged down fast and froze for 45 seconds plus several times. I repeated the same tasks after resetting the tablet and ended up with the same freezes and lag. I returned it. Clearly the lack of sufficient RAM combined with the relatively weak processor makes this tablet fall into the performance range of tablets under $100. The screen sells the tablet, but don't be fooled. I bought the Asus MeMO pad 7 ME572C FOR $162 AND IT ROCKS!!!!

This Dell Venue 8 has 1GB memory, unlike it's predecessor, which had 2. The difference is staggering-- what was an incredibly smooth experience has become a jumpy, laggy one. the Ven8-1999 (the prior model) was very impressive. A little cost savings (perhaps because of an improved screen) went a long way to making this a mediocre Android experience.

Great price for a mid-range tablet from Dell. Works well with great color, camera and size. I was very please when I purchased it as a gift for my family. Had to no problems with it. It was fast to open, great internet connection. Impress for the price.

Beautiful display. Good sound. But it is the most laggiest device ever. Any time you are using the browser. Regardless of browser it will freeze for minutes at a time. Doesn't help it runs 80 to 90% memory usage after a fresh reboot and killing as many unused apps as you can.
As a ebook reader it's fine. As a video player. It is fine. As a tablet. It is worse then the 59 dollars digiland tablet.

wish there was 3.5 stars. I bought this tablet for my mom so she could play casino type games, to check email and of course, Facebook. the discounted price was a big factor. it's a decent unit for her purpose. not comparable to my Galaxy S but also not $600. the unit met her needs. she told me that she really liked it even though she got knocked off wifi a few times and we had to restart it a couple more times. definitely worth the price ...

This Tablet is an excellent choice for me because it's easy to operate, it has a webcam, 16 GB, a high resolution, very light to carry, has a lot of features, good price and it's a Dell product which means it's a reputable company than any other brands. So if anyone planning to buy a Tablet, get this one and you'll be satisfied.

I like this tablet for the good photos it takes and the clear focused display. Does it make videos? I have no idea! There is little in the way of descriptions or instructions included. I wish it were Windows 8. Why does Dell make Windows 8 laptops, but Android tablets? I am so used to Windows 8! Too much old mail "coughed" up from months before I purchased this tablet!

This Dell tablet is my first Dell purchase and I really enjoy using it. It has good touch and very handy for the size. The sound quality is good as well. I like playing videos and reading on this device. I am planning to buy one more for my brother :)

I use primarily to read my daily newspaper and also books on Kindle app. Plus some light web browsing. Occasional stalls or freezes, which may be app-related. Pretty good battery life. Price had been dropping; ended up paying about $80 after adjustment, which is what Dell was getting for refurbs. Good value.

I really wanted to love this Tablet. Great picture, great sound, many great feature. Regularly freezes and Chrome doesn't work at all. Found a post on Amazon that listed all the bloat ware that needs to be disabled. It worked, now works better. However at 20 days the charging port tilted sideways inside the tablet. At 31 days I tried to exchange at Best Buy. After consulting their computer it was determined that it had to go back to Dell. After 40 minutes on the phone with Dell it was determined I had to mail it in to Dell at my expense! So at 30 days I am without my device, out shipping and handling!

I had high hopes for this tablet. Great display and price but evidently the 1 gig of ram is inadequate. There are frequent issues with the web browsers locking up. The screen flickers at times when apps are in use. I am guessing that the HD display over taxes the available ram. I have other tablets with lower definition displays and 1 gig that does not have these issues. I have read that others have had the same problems so my unit's issues are not rare. I am returning mine.

I really wanted to love this tablet. When I first turned it on I was amazed by the screen and overall build quality. However, the 1GB of memory severely handicaps this device and makes it almost unusable.

It is not the fastest tablet on the market, but for an 8" screen with it's resolution it is a great deal. The screen looks great and the battery life is pretty decent. I would recommend this to friends.
