Not At All Worth The Price

I really, really wanted to love this laptop. It has a gorgeous screen, with a 15.6" panel in the body of a 14" laptop. It's great for travel, it weighs less than most 15.6" laptops, the battery life is wonderful, the keyboard is excellent, it has an elevated look & feel, and it's backed by great warranty options. Unfortunately, Dell has failed to remediate 3 huge issues with this laptop over the previous generation, and in a $3,000 device, it leaves a sour taste. I would only ever recommend this if it was somewhere around $1,500. Even then, there are higher performing options that are smaller and lighter. 1) The webcam resolution/image quality is TERRIBLE in good lighting, and unusable in medium to low light. It's embarrassing on a business call. Dell's reasoning is that the top bezel is so skinny that they can't fit anything but the .9MP camera sensor in there - but if you look at any modern flagship phone, you will see front-facing camera sensors that are the same size or smaller, and yet provide a quality image. This is not excusable on a $3,000 laptop. 2) The much-lauded NVIDIA RTX 4070 discrete graphics of this laptop have been hardware LIMITED to 50W. The 4070 mobile GPU is a 100W GPU, and without half of its normal power, only performs about half as well as would be expected of any other laptop with a 4070. The benchmarked graphics performance is actually closer in line to an RTX 2060. More on that below. This has been well documented in multiple reviews, and again, is unacceptable in a $3,000 laptop. 3) The charging requirements and lack of 3rd party chargers is really short-sighted for an 'executive' laptop that Dell is marketing towards people who travel and need performance. This is because Dell is using proprietary charging over USB-C. This laptop does not conform to Power Delivery (PD) 3.1 via USB-C, which uses 5amps across different voltages,. The charger instead pushes power via a 6.67amp current. Literally no mass-produced USB-C chargers provide for this current - they are all limited to 5amps. Anyway, because of this shortcoming, Dell cannot provide enough wattage to sufficiently power both the CPU & NVIDIA GPU under high load. So, this ties back into why the GPU is hardware limited to 50W. There is another problem in that if you are not using the massive Dell 130W charger, and instead want to use a 3rd party 150W USB-C charger, the laptop will not receive enough power to compensate for high load and will slowly drain the battery even though it is plugged in to a 150W charger. This all goes back to the fact that the laptop does not conform to PD 3.1. So, you are stuck lugging the huge charger around. If Dell is going to require us to use an OEM charger, then why even use USB-C in the first place?? Why not use a DC barrel connection that provides for higher watts, so that they can allow the RTX 4070 to run at it's full 100W??? There is literally no point to this laptop having USB-C charging, and it only gets in the way of its performance.

This computer has been great for my wife’s and I college needs… It has great resolution, the touchscreen is a nice touch, the keyboard isn’t to sticky, and the interface is easy to get used as we are both Mac users. That being said, the reasons to why this isn’t a 4.5 or 5 stars is due to the battery. The laptop maybe lasts for 3 hours with 3-4 tabs open on a browser and listening to music. I feel that a computer of this price should last just a bit longer. Just make sure you have your charger at all times

I bought this laptop as an open-box item just before the Black Friday sales. I'd been looking for a powerhouse laptop with a discrete GPU to be the base of my mobile creativity and productivity workflow for the next couple years. Having done a lot of research, I came down to this laptop and the Samsung GalaxyBook Ultra. Due to availability, I went with the Dell. I've had zero complaints! The biggest weaknesses that the reviews mentioned were its thermal performance and battery life. Neither is a major issue for me due to my typical usage style - keeping the laptop docked and connected to a dual monitor setup with an external keyboard and mouse. During the times I take this laptop out in the wild (to a neighborhood coffee shop), battery life has been pretty decent so I don't have to keep it tethered to a power outlet. I realize it's only been a month, so I will keep an eye out for anything else that comes up and revisit this review if anything does. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy this beast of a laptop.

Upgraded from a surface book 3. This screen is thin, crisp and fast. The computer feels solid for how light it is and the screen is probably it's best feature. I was unaware that USB A has been phased out but it came with a little adapter for keyboard/mice combos that still work with the old USB... Great purchase, especially when it was on sale.

I was on the market for a new laptop and after weeks of searching, I found this laptop. The RAM, memory, and speed is off the hook!!! Best Buy really looked out on this one. The laptop is so quiet as it runs, but it packs so much speed and memory.

I expected to be impressed by this laptop (given that my last one was purchased almost 8 years ago), but the speed and display still exceeded my expectations. This is a great option if you want something that's both portable for work/grad school and able to play resource-intense video games

If you need a laptop that is thin, light, and FAST, this an excellent choice. It's Dell's premium XPS line, and this one has the high end specs. Most people don't need this, but if you need stupid fast CPU and GPU in a laptop form factor, this is a great machine.

(I’ll note that bestbuy has the listing wrong, the photograph for the product shows i7 EVO despite the headline of the device stating its an i9 EVO when in fact its not even an i9 EVO. Its just an i9 13900H.) bought this to replace a 2021 Spectre x360 that was already getting long in the tooth even after a reimage, this machine has been a delight to use and cant seem to even hickup no matter how many chrome tabs i throw at it. Smooth as silk and a absolutely beautiful OLED screen.

    NEVER BUY OPEN BOX

Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

After two months of purchasing this allegedly "excellent" open-box, I started facing dozens of blue screens and forced restarts a day. Best Buy apparently wanted to offload a faulty or damaged unit without letting anyone know about the issues it was facing. Best Buy's customer service treated me like absolute garbage concerning the shipping process, so I wrote off ever getting any help from them once the computer started showing frequent issues conveniently just outside of the 30-day refund window. The only warranty they provided is Dell "Premium Support" which has dragged me around for the last 6 months on wild goose chase distractions and gaslighting--enough so that the local repairman who was sent out for a second time took enough pity on me to explain to me that this particular model seems to have had a batch shipped out with bad motherboards and he sees it all the time. He instructed me to take a picture of some specs and relay this to the Dell support carousel. Then he said if I was lucky enough for them to not dodge having the motherboard replaced or "finding no problems" when I ship it off for repairs, I should still probably sell it. But it seems like pretty shady practice for Dell Premium Support to be designed to be nearly impossible to obtain a working computer or replacement before my "warranty" period runs out. I wouldn't recommend Best Buy open box to anyone because this unit is proof that they will absolutely sell you a broken "top-of-the-line" computer and attach no responsibility except for another company's customer service that is designed to be a time-waste. They will call you multiple times and have to take remote control of your (broken, constantly blue-screening) computer, and then they will absolutely gaslight you and pretend like they restarted the computer when it actually just crashed again. Or they will try to blame a crash on a browser that the both of you just watched the technician uninstall and so therefore couldn't be the culprit. And they will string you along while they type your computer's symptoms into a search engine and read about the same things you have probably already searched. And you'll have to do this at least a dozen times before they actually start making any real effort. At this point they will stall any way they can, including requiring you to select a two-hour period to receive their call, which they always conveniently miss by an hour. And this is the only way to progress, even if you provide pictures of blue screens and minidump files, until you have to ask for the situation to be escalated almost a dozen times. At which point they will keep telling you for months that the "escalation team" is fully aware and remediation is always one step away, until you go over-9000 Karen. Just don't buy open box because it is probably slimmer odds of getting anything "excellent" than you're hoping And apparently you shouldn't buy Dell unless you get the 3rd tier support--yes, apparently "Premium Support" is the middle tier. I shudder to think what the base level is like because this has been one of the most stressful and mentally taxing experiences I've ever had. It shouldn't be hard for Dell--or more justifiably Best Buy--to send out a replica or even an upgrade when you are providing a constant stream of evidence of blue screens. It's ridiculous that I paid nearly 2K for a machine and I have had to endure 6 months of gaslighting and stalling, which seems designed to run out the clock and take no accountability for the manufacturing fault or damage incurred when Best Buy "opened the box"--I'm sure there's no way this computer wasn't sitting around as a floor model until it started blue screening and couldn't keep up appearances anymore. Every time they tweak the system settings, every time they blame a browser, or a certain program, or drivers, or a BIOS update, is a cover for the real aim--kicking the can down the road a couple of days or weeks. I'm lucky enough to not be drastically affected by this immediately, but imagine if you needed this computer for your livelihood and it was blue screening dozens of times a day. Would you think it would be acceptable to spend 6 months being put on hold while your career goes down the drain?
