Another win for the Dell XPS line

This is not my first Dell XPS series laptop, so I am well aware of the product line and the various compenant variations that are available. Being a previous xOS follower before getting a Dell XPS, I am nothing short of impressed with the product line. So when I got to try the Dell XPS 15 15.6" FHD+ Laptop - Intel Evo i7 - Intel Evo Design - Intel Arc A370M I was excited to see what it had to offer. So, out of the box what are my first impressions? Well first it is very thin and light. At a hair over 4 pounds, the computer is pretty light. It easily fits into a backpack our a sleeve carrier if that is your preference. It appears very high end and attractive based on the combination of metal and plastic used. In particular I like the inside being black instead of white like my old XPS model. I say this because the lighted keyboard tends to show up better with the darker keyboard. At least for me it seemed that way after using both. I there are USB-C and thunderbolt ports, as well as an adapter that comes with it to give you USB-A and HDMI options. There is no DVD/CD drive, but good luck finding a computer that has one these days. I like the size of the touchpad, but I found it to be a bit over sensitive. Maybe that is something I can adjust, I will play around with it a little more and see. The keyboard is great. The response of the keys is very satisfying and the backlighting is superior to my old XPS with this back keys. No complaints with the keyboard what so ever. It has a nice wide and ample layout. The screen is LED and the resolution is spectacular. It is 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA), which for reference I really don’t know what to compare it to. That said, it is very vivid and sharp. The screen size is 15.4” which is perfect. The one thing I would have liked to have on this computer would have been a touch screen. Its is a simple luxury I have gotten used to. I would have liked to have it on this computer as well, however it is not a deal breaker by any means. As far as performance, this computer is loaded. It boasts the Intel 13th Generation Core i7 Evo processor. As the brain of you computer, it is on the high end of the quality and performance scale. Multitasking is not an issues with this CPU. The computer has 512GB of SSD memory, which is both quality and more than enough for what I need it for. Plus there is 16GB of RAM to handle whatever game you want to play or other demanding applications. On the flip side, the Intel Arc A370M graphics card is not as high end as the other components and for that it almost seems out of place. It was strange to see a good amount of RAM, with a solid CPU, and then a low to medium end graphics card. I am going to play some games and see how it balances out. Maybe I am over thinking it, but it just seemed out of place for me. One thing that you don’t really think about with a laptop is the sound quality of the speakers. I just typically accept what it has and move on. But these little speakers really put out some sound and they sound pretty good! Like better that I expected, and I was very pleased. As expected, this computer runs on the windows 11 platform. Which of course is the latest and greatest right now. And in my opinion a slight upgrade to 10. So what is the verdict? It is a great laptop. Size is perfect, its ultra portable and does not feel fragile. It is packed with high end components and supported with ample memory and RAM. This is a great laptop for a student, a working professional or anyone in between. I highly recommend it and any of the Dell XPS line for that matter. They make a competitive product at a very reasonable price for what you are getting.

The configuration I'm reviewing is the Dell XPS 15 machine with a 15.6 inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) display, an Intel Evo Core i7 13700H CPU (14 cores, 5.00 GHz Turbo), 16GB 4800MHz DDR5 RAM, Intel Arc A370M GPU (4GB GDDR6), a 512GB M.2 NVMe drive, and Windows 11 Home. It comes with a 130 watt Type-C power adapter, which is always nice to see, and an interesting USB-C to USB-A (USB 3.0) + HDMI 2.0 adapter for converting one of the onboard Type-C ports to a Type-A port and an HDMI port. Very nice that this comes in the box instead of Dell forcing you to spend more money on an additional dongle. I wish more manufacturers would do this as a standard practice. IO-wise you get one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort, A 3.5mm headphone / microphone combo jack, a full-size SD card slot, and 2 more USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (Thunderbolt) ports. All of these specs make for a VERY nice experience and I am very happy with how the machine performs for the most part (uninstalling McAfee helped a lot). It's build quality is absolutely top notch which is always very important to me. I would expect a bit more out of the 6 cell 86Wh battery than I'm getting considering this is a non-OLED FHD+ display, but it's not a deal-breaker for me. I wanted this configuration SPECIFICALLY because of the Intel Arc GPU. Intel obviously has a lot of catching up to do in the discrete GPU space and they've already done a lot with driver updates along the way to provide some encouraging results. That said Arc is not without issues and if you don't want to deal with anything that might arise due to a "new kid on the block" graphics card I suggest you opt for one of the NVIDIA 40 Series options. The one thing that doesn't quite make sense to me is the pricing. There are machines out there with 1440P or even 2160P OLED displays that are comparably priced. Some even come with a 1TB storage drive instead of (what I consider to be a bare minimum these days) 512GB. To be fair, I'm pretty sure the overall build quality and user experience won't be XPS 15-tier, but saving money is more important for many people. To that end, right now (08/21/2023) this exact same machine is $200 less ($1299) directly from Dell so If you are planning to buy from BestBuy make sure to request a price match. All in all this is a very nice machine and I will gladly use it for probably a good long while.

Unboxing the Dell XPS 15, you'll find the laptop itself, a 130w charger, a USB-C to USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 adapter, and some documentation. The USB-C splitter is very useful as the laptop itself only includes 3 USB-C ports (two of which are Thunderbolt), an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The XPS 15 has a premium feeling build quality and a sleek design. The screen hinge feels very solid with very little wobble, though the hinge doesn't go back very far even for a non-2-in-1 laptop, so it's important to be mindful of that. Opening up the laptop, the screen itself fills up as much space as it can as the bezels are very thin. The keyboard is made of smooth and premium feeling plastic. The keys themselves have almost no wobble and feel nice to type on. The touchpad feels very nice and is very large, with the downside that it may get in the way when trying to type. The laptop includes a fingerprint and face scanner for Windows Hello integration, both of which work as intended. The onboard speakers are decent. When listening to music, I noticed a slight warble sound at very specific frequencies, as well as very complex songs with lots of different elements sounding somewhat mashed together. However, the speakers work very well when watching TV or movies as they're clear and offer just enough bass to make the experience enjoyable, as well as plenty of volume. The laptop's camera is mediocre, having a very fuzzy look even for 720p. The laptop's performance is very promising. The screen offers plenty of brightness, vibrant colors, and good contrast, allowing for images to have a crisp and pleasing look. Furthermore, the screen resolution is 1920x1200 (16:10) leaving more room for multitasking. App loading is quick and multitasking is very possible. The laptop is very capable of light gaming, with promising performance in games like Minecraft (~150-200fps at fancy graphics), Roblox (~60-120fps at max graphics, depending on the game), and Rocket League (~100fps at max graphics). Despite the screen's satisfactory performance in general usage, however, it's not made for gaming, as it's slightly choppy and there seems to be a very slight ghosting effect. If you're not a hardcore gamer, you shouldn't worry about noticing or being annoyed by this as it still works great. Even while gaming, the fans are very quiet and won't be distracting. Battery life during general usage, such as working on word documents or streaming TV was very acceptable, allowing for about 8-12 hours of general activities on a single charge. Gaming will bring that number down to around 3-6 hours depending on how demanding the game is. One thing to keep in mind is installing updates and drivers upon receiving the laptop. I had several issues such as Windows Update AND Dell SupportAssist failing to install certain updates. Since I got the laptop, I've had graphics driver issues where every few hours the screen would begin glitching and flickering for a couple of minutes and would return to normal. I tried resetting the laptop to a factory image, but the issues still returned. This could be a factory Windows system image issue, or it could be a user error. Still, something to keep in mind. Excluding the speaker and camera performance and (possible) update and driver issues, the Dell XPS 15 works great and is very capable. Overall, this laptop will serve you very well.

Good Laptop That Gets the Job Done

This is a good laptop. I have not seen or experienced any problems with it. The laptop is silver on the outside and black on the inside (the keyboard side); I prefer the black inside to the white inside. Has your typical keys and no number pad. Keys are regular size and can be backlit. You can push the power button to turn it on (or if you have to do a hard off) and set your fingerprint to be able to finger print power on. You also can set a pin as well as use your eyes. Speakers sit atop the keyboard on each side. This should be a standard. I always thought speakers on the bottom was senseless. The power cord/block is black and the usb c connector that plugs into the laptop is a bit tight in the port. I always have to pull harder to get it out or push harder to get it in. What is that about? Also, I hate that it does not have a regular usb port in it. Instead, it has an adaptor for a regular usb port and hdmi port. Again, what is that about? I know we are in the age of usb c and I am all about it, but there should still be some regular usbs included, as this is still used. Easy setup… nothing different than the typical setup now… with Windows; although it seems a little quicker… which is a good thing. You can have it pickup your OneDrive from your other registered Microsoft office computer so that all your documents automatically come through. Again, so much easier! And it powers on quickly. The screen is a nice size and is bright enough. Colors, whites and blacks are all good. Does what it’s supposed to do with Office apps, Zoom, internet, videos, music. Everything works well and as it should. I do not get lag or stutter. The mousepad is huge and I am not a fan of this because the underside of my wrists touch it and makes the cursor (or whatever I’m doing) go where I did not ask it to go… regularly. This is very annoying. With all that said, I would recommend the laptop. It is a good laptop that can be setup and started with ease, and gets the job done. Peace.

    Great laptop except the trackpad

This is a wonderful laptop - thin and light yet very performance oriented. As I tested this, I was impressed by the speed of video editing in software that I added after setup. I found the performance to be several minutes quicker in producing a 4k video of about 15 minutes than the computer this replaced - itself was two years older. The screen is extremely vivid though this model does not have touch ability. This has Windows 11 Home (which to me works just fine and have never understood the need for a home user to have pro). I found the updates to be fewer than most newer systems. Set up was within half an hour as I also used my Office 365 account to do some of the basic setup with apps moved over and general configuration settings imported over from how I like things. I've owned Dells in the past and this is a fine mobile platform that is powerful. I have not had the chance to run this on battery only, however. The one glaring issue I have found with is the trackpad seems finicky or overly sensitive. I was constantly getting things on screen I didn't want and rarely was able to do basic things with ease. While this is problematic if you are using it as a laptop, it can be cured with a mouse and that can just be brought along. I just don't think it is as good as other laptops I've owned. I heartily recommend this if you want a quality laptop with metal in the construction that is well laid out and upgradeable - I have added a second NVME drive already and after the tests with video and system setup, I upgraded to 64 gigs of DDR 5 ram and this is quite the performer for the price. If you want something portable that can do video work without taxing it, this is a good choice. It also handles basic graphics work with ease.

It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for a Windows computer, so I was excited to see how far along PCs have come both in hardware and software. The Dell XPS has an established name in the computer industry that’s as well known as a certain fruit company’s MacBook Pro moniker and it’s synonymous with being a premium and top of the line consumer option, ideally designed for creators and creativity in a similar sense. The packaging is superb and the build quality of this laptop is impeccable from the moment you pick it up and open it up. The XPS has a really nice weighted henge that moves very glides smoothly when you open and close it and also prevents the screen from wobbling while you type, like some laptops with lower quality henges. Spec-wise, it’s an interesting compromise in hardware. Great processor - literally a step down from the highest Intel Core i9 offering - yet still offering more than enough speed and performance for the average consumer or even creatives. The Intel Arc is a huge step up over the Intel Iris offered on other Dell models, boosting graphics performance by over 50%. 16GB of RAM is the minimum that I would purchase a Windows computer with, due to the higher memory resource usage by the operating system. Anything less than that and you’re really making a short term purchase that’s likely going to need to be upgraded in a couple of year due to performance degradation. Storage is okay at 512GB. I’d say 512GB is middle-of-the-road for premium PC’s though (with 256GB SSD being expected as a minimum). What was a little disappointing? It started with the screen. While I can appreciate a matte display - which is less likely to show glare and reflection, the screen is essentially 1080p/Full HD. Some people will claim that at 1920 x 1200 this laptop’s resolution is better than 1080p, and technically this is true, but the reality is the screen is a 16:10 aspect ratio so it’s actually the same quality, but the panel itself is taller (top to bottom) than 1080p. It’s kind of like when you go to the movies and before the movie starts, the curtain over the screen shifts slightly to show more screen up and down but the side to side stays the same. It would’ve been nice to see Dell put a OLED on this and/or a higher resolution (UHD/4k resolution) to really make photos and videos really pop and make text richer, especially since it’s catering to creatives. This model is also not touchscreen which seems like an odd omission seeing how much Microsoft and most of their PC partners/OEMs push touchscreen as an advantage of a PC over say a fruit competitor’s products. For work, I do a fair amount of web meetings (usually thru Zoom and WebEx) so I was curious to see what the web cam, mic and speaker systems were like. The 720p webcam (less than 1MP) was surprisingly bad. It looked washed out and murky almost like there was something maybe obstructing the camera. It was not as sharp as the devices I usually attend web meetings on for sure. And this could be something to consider if you’re using it for school and you may be attending classes virtually. The speakers were okay, but the audio sounded really flat and thin. The speakers are louder than expected, but there’s not a lot of bass response and ultimately the speakers leave you wanting a fuller, more robust sound. Wrapping up: port-wise this laptop includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, SD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack and 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports on the opposite side of the laptop. Dell is generous enough to include a USB-A/HDMI dongle, which was an appreciated addition. Included wireless connectivity is the aging Wi-Fi 6, instead of the newer Wi-Fi 6E standard. Battery life was between 10-12 hours, depending on usage, which for most is easily a full work or school day. Weight is under 4.5 pounds, but heavier than I’m used to, so it was a slight adjustment. Heat was minimal and often not noticeable. All in all, I’d say the laptop is good (3.5/5 so I’m rounding up to 4), but there were definitely some interesting compromises that keep it from being great.

The overall feel of this laptop is solid - there's a good responsiveness to the keypresses. The touchpad takes a while to get used to - I'd personally use an external mouse instead. The initial setup was quick and easy. Dell didn't put any bloatware on, but the typical Microsoft stuff is there (I have no interest in MS Teams, and yet I can't seem to stop it from running!). I tried playing a graphically intensive 3D game, and even before launching it, I found that the bottom of the laptop got very hot. Playing the game only made it hotter - you'll want to be sure you're using it on a desk or laptop tray to protect yourself. It did handle the 3D game perfectly (better than a desktop I use as my daily gamer), but this activity completely ran through the battery quick - I probably had about 45 minutes of life of a fully charged battery when playing a 3D game. Otherwise, the battery life was decent - I could get through a full day of work without having to charge (word processing, spreadsheets, and web browsing). I believe the 15" screen (with a native resolution of 1900x1200) is the perfect compromise between not being able to see well on the screen and portability. With that said, the laptop seems a bit heavy for what it is. Perhaps that's because I'm used to a Macbook Air - but it's something to consider if you're going to travel with it. It will likely just fit on a typical airplane tray. If you're considering this laptop as an upgrade for an existing one - just note that it only has USB C ports, so you'll need a converter for your USB A devices. I used a USB C based "hub" that has 2 USB A ports, an HDMI port, SD card readers, and an audio jack (mostly because I already had it). I found it interesting that it has a full size SD card reader slot, but given the use of OneDrive and Google Drive, I don't think I'll ever find a use for it. One nice touch is the charging light that appears on the side while it's charging (which goes out once it's done). In summary, this is a decent laptop, especially if you can get it for a good price. If comparable laptops are lighter or have longer battery life when gaming, I'd go that direction instead.

I have used this laptop now for a bit and really am enjoying it. It is plenty fast and the screen is pretty to look at. I will get my gripes out of the way because I think this is probably one of if not the best laptop available today. I did not think the keyboard brightness was consistent from key to key to key. It was not terrible but definitely noticeable. I also thought that depending on how high the screen brightness is turned up there could be some glare on the top row of keys. I also thought the sound left something to be desired but compared to other laptops it was probably in the top tear. I liked how fast the laptop was and it was super easy to setup. The construction was top of the line and by far the best of breed. The model I have is the Intel A370 graphics but other that gaming or CUDA programming was plenty and no noticeable delays. The ports are super fast and well placed. I liked that it was built well and felt like it when I was using it. It was nice that it came with the power adapter and an external USB C adapter allowing both USB A and HDMI to connect with no issues or perceived delays. If anything I am excited to install upgrades and make this my long term laptop. My recent gaming laptop had actually died and this comes at a time when I had a need for a useful laptop. I highly recommend this laptop with any video card configuration. Did I mention this laptop is extremely easy to upgrade.

Great laptop! Very happy so far! Installation and download times are very, very quick. The graphics for video games and movies are absolutely incredible! I can run my games with the graphics turned all the way up without any issues or lag. I was also surprised with how great the speakers and sound have been! The battery life on the laptop is amazing as well and also charges very quickly. There have not been any issues with buffering, loading, nor installing any videos or video games. I've been really amazed with how great the graphics have been running. Everything comes in crystal clear even with the graphics turned all the way up. The keyboard is very small, but that is always expected with laptops and works perfectly for me because i don't like using bigger keyboards. The keyboard and mouse are also very easy to use. The mouse can be very touchy, so that does take some getting used to but overall, the laptop has been running perfect! The only downside is that the laptop does not have a touch screen.

The 2023 Dell XPS 15 surprised the heck out of me given its price and my recent ho-hum experience with Dell laptops. This is the second Core i7-13700H laptop in my home and first with an Intel Arc GPU. My first impressions of the XPS 15 started off really high with the excellent packaging design. The XPS packaging is a big step up from even a premium gaming laptop I have of theirs from a few years ago. The laptop is in a smaller box made of premium cardboard that is all black, which is in side a larger box that is shaped quite a bit differently than your typical laptop box. Inside the box was the XPS 15 laptop, a 130W USB-C charger (without PPS, though) and a cool little dongle that adapts a USB-C port into USB-A + HDMI. This dongle is tiny; the flat ~2 inch USB-C cable is integrated into it and folds away cleanly - it's definitely travel ready. The design of the XPS 15 is exceptionally compact. For a 15" laptop, this is barely larger than a 14" corporate laptop thanks to the incredibly thin bezels around the display. The keyboard does not have a 10 key, but to me that's excusable given the incredibly small size of this machine. The display is a 16:10 1200p display that gets "bright enough" for business use but has some backlight bleed in dark screens and doesn't support HDR. Personally I think 1200p is "just fine" on a midrange laptop and suits the pricepoint very well. Performance-wise, I am almost blown-away by the XPS 15. The Arc A370M GPU is decent enough for eSports gaming and maybe even some AAA titles at reduced settings. I have played a few games of Overwatch 2 using the built-in GPU and I was able to get console-esque FPS at native res and medium settings. What really impressed me with the XPS 15 was the CPU performance and thermal design. Dell has managed to configure this laptop to hit the full 115W TDP in Turbo PL2 without having fans that scream like absolute banshees. Benchmark and gaming performance was consistently 15% higher than my other 13700H laptop. A great feature of many of the new 13th gen laptops has been the inclusion of ThunderBolt 4 ports and the XPS 15 is no exception. I connected an eGPU dock to the XPS 15 easily and enjoyed near-desktop PC level performance. In OW2, my desktop (5.1ghz all core 10600K + 7900 XT) stays pegged at 240fps at 1440p, and the XPS 15 was consistently hovering around 200 FPS with the 7900 XT in the eGPU dock. That's really kinda crazy to me given the losses you expect from an eGPU. This setup (with a 6800 XT) will be a second gaming machine in our house and I'm thrilled that the XPS 15 can meet that need instead of building an entire desktop rig for light use. In previous reviews I've knocked Dell for having a ton of bloatware. While the XPS 15 does have McAfee and some Dell software preinstalled, it was super easy to remove (unlike the appx version of McAfee they've had on some laptops I've used). Also, the MyDell app was surprisingly functional for controlling the thermal/power settings. I'll give them a pass here. Two thumbs way up for this Dell XPS 15. It is a great device that is a great compromise between a powerful desktop replacement and compact road warrior, without feeling 'compromised.' Highly recommended.

Dell continues to lead the way in laptop performance and design. I was looking for a laptop that I could push with some video production and casual gaming here and there. The 13th gen i7-13700h processer helps this start up super quickly, and I loved that I was able to push it on video software and it handled 4k files like a champ. I also game on a desktop computer, but I enjoy when I can run some games on a laptop because it provides me with some entertainment on the go in case I have some time to chill at the hotel. This laptop was able to games such as FIFA 23 Forza Horizon 5 without a problem. I tried other games like Halo Infinite and F1 23 and it struggle a bit more. That said, with the Intel Arc370m worked flawlessly in moving my 4k files in Adobe Premier Pro, and similarly, editing pictures in Lightroom was a breeze. Here is a quick snapshot of my review based on the features and design quality. 500-nit Display 4/5 This is more of an entry level display for this model, and so being realistic, this will not compare to a 2k or 4k display, but it does a great job at this budget. Intel Evo 5/5 First time I own an Intel Evo design laptop, and it’s beautiful. This does not feel cheap at all. Sleek, sturdy, and feels good on the hand. Carbon-like on the inside and keyboard and metal-like in the outside. Memory and Storage – 5/5 The 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD is plenty of room and speed for me. I have external hard drives where I keep my video and photo files, and so having this amount of space is enough as I am working on the videos. Now as far as games, don’t expect to download more than 2-3 games because you will use your space quickly. I only left FIFA 23 installed. Intel Arc A370m GPU – 5/5 I read a little bit about Intel GPUs and hadn’t heard to many positive things, but this mostly came from gamers who are expecting to only use this as a gaming GPU. If that is your situation, then perhaps the Intel GPU is not for you. For me, I wanted a balance GPU within my budget, and to my surprise, it’s able to flawlessly run the video game I play the most so this is a win-win for me. Design and Quality – 5/5 Beautiful and sleek. It’s been hard for me to find a PC laptop that feels good from the moment you pick it up, but this is a nice and sleek design. Love it! Overall, I recommend it to those prioritizing some video and photo editing over gaming. If all you want this laptop for is to play games, there are other options out there, but if you want a balanced computer at a good budget, this is it!

The Dell XPS is a sweet laptop for creators and productivity. It's got a sleek and stylish design, a durable chassis, and a bunch of features that make it a great choice for everyday use. The XPS comes with a bunch of configurations, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. This particular review is for the lower-middle-class model, which has a Core i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a non-touchscreen display. Even though it's got lower-end specs, the XPS 9530 still performs well. It can handle basic tasks like web browsing and document editing with ease, and it can even handle more demanding tasks like video editing and gaming. The battery life is also good, lasting for about 8 hours on a single charge. The XPS has a few drawbacks. The screen isn't as bright as some other laptops, and the keyboard isn't backlit. But these are minor flaws that are outweighed by the laptop's many strengths. Overall, the Dell XPS is a great laptop for creators and productivity. It's well-made, has a long battery life, and performs well. If you're looking for a premium laptop that can do it all, the XPS 9530 is a great option. - The chassis is made of CNC-machined aluminum and carbon fiber, which makes it very durable. - The ports are well-placed and easy to reach. - The keyboard is backlit and has a good tactile feel. - The speakers are loud and clear. - The trackpad is large and responsive. - The webcam is not great, but it is good enough for video calls. Overall, I'm very impressed with the Dell XPS 9530. It's a great laptop for creators and productivity, and it's well-worth the price.
