Better and cheaper than the Surface Pro 3
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a graphic designer this product gets the job done wonderfully. Since this computer is an all-in-one, it is the perfect piece to edit in the office with, present to a client with, and take on the go while culminating the touch screen capability. Sure it might seem a little bulky while thinking it as a tablet, but with a 1 terabyte hard drive with an i5 processor, no tablet can match this. Besides, the size grows on you while you are editing in Adobe Photoshop. Because of the enormous screen, having 2 programs up at the same time feels normal. If you're not use to Windows 8.1, the "ease of access" touchscreen features may take some time to get use to. Things to keep in mind: - If you are interested in using video editing programs, this is probably not the computer for you. You will want to go with the i7 version of this which you can only get through ordering online through Best Buy and is $200 steeper. -You are also getting quite the deal buying through Best Buy instead of getting it through Dell's main site -This model does not come with the stand. The stand is an additional ~$100 - You will most likely want to buy the carrying case if you are bringing this to clients or potential employers for the sake of professionalism. For those out there who are using this computer for basic features, expect it to last from 5-8 years as long as you treat it well.

Seems a good one so far.....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased for $791 at Best Buy, at this price it was a good deal for me. Key points: --Screen looks nice, I cant say fantastic. --It's fast and has plenty of storage as we expect from every desktop. --It's very slim, lightweight and silent. --Got great Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse with the package. Both operate on Batteries and they don't need a dongle so it saves at least 2 USB ports --It operates for 3 hours on Battery Power --2 things i miss in Keyboard: 1] Don't have Caps lock indicator 2] Don't have Screen Brightness Adjustment option through Keyboard (It has Sound Adjustment option though) --Speakers produces very loud and nice quality sound. -- It has only 2 USB ports which i feel very less for any desktop. --Comes with Windows 8.1 and up-gradable to Windows 10

Fully Functioning Multi Touch Screen
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Touchscreen is fully functional in each and every direction - great asset to this computer. This is super fast computer processor by Intel core i5 at 1.70 - 2.40Ghz - very fast! Sound is great for this size. Lastly sides are padded rubbery. Highly recommended for this size of computer and from its competitors.

NOT Recommended
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This looks like a fun, portable, functional all-in-one computer that is a great compromise between work and play. After over a year of use, I've rated it one star for the following reasons: 1. While light and portable-looking, it certainly is not, unless you have a VERY large backpack or laptop carrying case. (which are difficult or impossible to find in this size) There's no convenient way to safely carry this computer. I had to use the dell factory box to transport it anywhere. Additionally, by holding, carrying, or transporting the computer, you WILL turn it on/off unintentionally via the protruding power button on the right edge of the screen housing. Plan on discovering your computer very hot and the battery being dead every time you transport it. 2. Visions of lounging in your favorite chair, sipping coffee while browsing the internet with this computer are complete fantasies. Attempting to use it ANYWHERE besides a desk/table will end in despair and profanities. The weight of the computer puts all but the hulk incapable of holding it with one hand. If you set it down in your lap( either upright or flat), the expertly placed heat vents blow hot air right into your nether regions, overheating your new computer and your future children. I didn't particularly care for this feature. Set it upright on a tray in your lap, but your nether regions will yet again be assaulted- the computer falls on its screen with even the slightest bump. To enable the upright usage of the computer, Dell graced the XPS 18 with small, fold-out braces on the back that are severely underdeveloped. Think flamingo legs on a buffalo. Your precious new computer will sit perched on these legs. (after a year of routine use, mine have failed multiple times.) 3. The hardware is very mediocre for the price- a concession I made for the (apparent) ease of use and portability. Overall, this computer is simply a thin, "neat-looking" desktop, with virtually none of the portability and convenience of a laptop.

Great computer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are plenty of other detailed technical reviews on here that cover it pretty well. Great touchscreen all in one, very easy to carry around. It runs more smoothly after updating Windows 8.1. Great computer for this price. Highly recommended.

Good tablet/hybrid, known issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Performance was always great. It was zippy, I seldom had to wait for an application to load. About a month ago, I started getting a message "Plugged in, not charging" and now the computer wont turn on at all. After searching the internet, I found out it's a common problem that Dell refuses to admit for this model. Tried all the troubleshoot advice from both Live Dell reps, and from it's support pages - all to no avail. Now I'm stuck with an 18.4-in paperweight.

BestBuy replaced with ASUS, DELL SUCKS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Miserable experience altogether. Bought in February 2015. I am not a heavy user, it gets used a few days out of the week. After a few months started noticing battery wasn't fully charged. Hover cursor over charging indicator and it would read "__% (plugged in, not charging)". Also, sometimes would wake up from sleep and all my previously open programs would be shut down like the system had restarted. Quickly began realizing the unit would not charge and drain down to 0% and restart while unattended. Yes, the unit has a "desktop mode" where if left plugged in it will keep battery from being overcharged and maintain battery charge above 50% but not go to full charge. This situation is different. The unit just doesn't charge, then allows the battery to simply drain completely and will not charge until the system blacks out and reboots. Simply unacceptable. Went online and did a search for "dell plugged in not charging" and found I am not alone. Not just the XPS18 but pretty much any Dell portable product is having this issue, and other users online indicated that after contacting Dell, they send someone out to replace the motherboard but it doesn't fix the issue even after multiple MB replacements. Great. Well, on my unit, this began happening on a regular basis about once a month. I would be using the machine and would have the battery slowly draining with "plugged in, not charging" message, the system would get to the point of 0% charge and instantly black out, no shutdown sequence or anything, it would get so low on battery charge. Only after this happens, will the battery begin charging. Finally contacted Dell about it in June/July. Spent 3 hours one day, probably 2 hours finally getting to someone who seemed knowledgeable, then another hour going through all their troubleshooting over the phone. This person said they were familiar with the issue, submitted a repair ticket, and had parts shipped to a 3rd party repair company, 3 items were supposed to be shipped: a new motherboard (surprise!), a new AC adaptor, and a new internal charging cord (between charge port and battery). The repairman arrived at my house with no prior call ahead (I work 20 minutes away) so I had to rush home, and Dell had only shipped him the AC adaptor and motherboard, they forgot to ship him the internal power cord. The technician performed a bunch of troubleshooting and diagnostics (again), then opened the unit and replaced the motherboard, reassembled, plugged in new AC adaptor and reperformed diagnostics. Of course, the system's on-board diagnostics are indicating systems performing properly, but when on standard home screen, get "plugged in, not charging message." So Dell replaced my motherboard, and it didn't fix the issue. Sounds like 99% of the other cases I read online. The technician said he was getting authorization for a DELL Depot repair and it would take 5-7 days. OK, minor inconvenience, I can go a week without it. Then he said since it's not a laptop but considered a "desktop", it can't be expedited so would take 7-12 business days. Well which story is it, DELL?? I was told Dell would contact me. Technician left and I returned to work after a 2.5-hour long lunch "hour." Talk about inconvenience. When the technician left, I noticed that the outer casing was not snapped back together correctly and the case was distorted. GREAT. Dell contacted me again and then stated that since it is a desktop they don't do depot repairs. I told them I don't care what their system officially classifies this unit as, it's not a conventional desktop, and is a portable computer much like a laptop, just as compact and lightweight, and can be shipped in to Depot for repair. They insisted they could not make this exception, and authorized a 2nd field repair. I brought my computer to my workplace on the designated repair day to avoid the long lunchtime repair again, but nobody contacted me. I heard from the repairman late that afternoon that they would not be able to come today, but the next day. I brought it with me to work the next day, and a different 3rd-party repairman came out equipped with ANOTHER MOTHERBOARD, and the internal power cord. This technician discovered the 1st technician used WAY TOO MUCH thermal paste. Not only that, but discovered the distortion in the outer casing was due to half of the plastic tabs being BROKEN OFF from the 1st repairman not assembling the computer correctly. This 2nd technician was able to somewhat correct this, some of the tabs are still broken but he was able to get things aligned properly and assembled correctly. Diagnostics showed system working correctly, and it actually was working at the time. He asked if I wanted to submit another repair ticket to replace the main casing, I said no, it looks good now and is securely snapped together, a repair like that I will request DELL to perform at the "Depot" since it's not a simple repair. He left after about 3 hours. I contacted Dell and asked that they leave my service request OPEN since the issue is intermittent and might take some time to happen again. Lo and behold, within 2-3 weeks it happened again. System must completely drain to 0%, reboot, then start charging. It did this several times over a week's period. The final straw was when I could not even get it to drain to 0% and begin recharging. The battery drained painfully slowly after 20%, and would stop draining at 5%. If I unplugged the power cord, the system shut down, not enough battery power to run. I could not boot it without being plugged in. If I started it up with the cord connected, it still wouldn't charge, but wouldn't drain either, or run only on battery power. I left it unplugged to finish draining the battery for A WEEK and only then would it start recharging. I responded to my existing request, and received an auto-response my ticket was CLOSED (thanks for that). I submitted a new ticket, providing the previous ticket number for reference, and received an e-mail instantly letting me know that this new service request was CLOSED. I submitted a 3rd ticket with a note referencing both previous numbers, and asked why it was closed instantly. I received a response that "The Service Request #s 917783737 and 917799040 are auto generated cases. No specific agent is owning the case and that is the reason why no one can contact you to provide assistance. I highly recommend that you contact our tech support online at http://support.dell.com or call us at 1-877-456-3355 at your earliest convenience." NOPE. I spent 3 hours on the phone the first time and this is unacceptable. I then got another response from someone higher up, that they have read and understood my situation with my Windows 7 unit (it has Windows 8.1), but would gladly offer me a refurbished unit. WTF? I did not spend $1000 dollars on a REFURBISHED COMPUTER. I went to Best Buy since this is still under a 1-year manufacturer warranty. Since it's outside of a 15-day return window, they can't do anything at this time, recommended I get a 3rd repair done with Dell, and then if the problem persists, having 3 repairs done would qualify it under a certain consumer electronics "lemon law" and Best Buy MAY be able to help me out (no promises). A month went by and I contacted Best Buy again and explained this, and that with the issues I've had with this, the issues online with Dell randomly replacing motherboards and not fixing the issue, I don't want another 3 months to go by, and I get stuck with this unit being out of warranty, I really want an exchange or return. Someone at Best Buy stepped up and made this right. I said I do not want to exchange for an equally inferior DELL product, they allowed me to exchange for comparative ASUS PT2001-10 computer and approx. $200 in store credit for the price difference. Easy exchange. Meanwhile the ASUS works flawlessly so far, at least it can perform such a BASIC TASK as CHARGING THE BATTERY. Avoid this product, or all Dell portable products, until their engineers can find the root cause of this "plugged in, not charging" failure, and fix them correctly.

Stopped Charging
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, the performance is pretty good. I am not a big fan of how reflective the screen is. Its almost impossible to use this outside. My main issue, however, is the charging situation. The power cord stopped charging the computer. I've had the computer for 4 months and this issue should not happen. This seems to be a common problem which people say is a motherboard issue which requires a Dell tech to come out and replace. Not happy with the computer at this point and probably should have gone with my first instinct and purchased a Lenovo.

First and LAST Dell I'll ever buy.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.System got stuck in an endless loop of "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer." the first time it ran Windows update. BestBuy referred me to Microsoft, Microsoft referred me to Dell, and Dell told me they couldn't help me because it was still under warranty at BestBuy. So, maybe it's a great computer and I'm unfairly giving it one star because of poor customer service, but I bought the computer for my 72-year-old mother, and at some point, it's a given that SHE's going to need tech support from somebody. And since nobody was willing to provide any useful support for a brand-new computer, I'm betting that it will be even less likely that I'll get any useful support when it's a year old, so I'm giving this product one star, taking it back and buying her an iMac. And yes, I could go online and look up all the tech bulletins and knowledge base articles myself and fix it myself, but I just paid $1100 for it and shouldn't have to.

Portable yet complete
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One thing I really like is that the screen does not get hot like most other computers I have had (except for Macs). Have had the computer for 3 days and the only problem is that the space bar does not put a space between words - randomly. Will see if there is a fix in control panel.

Hard drive error in less than 6 days
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm headed back to Best Buy hoping they'll replace this epic fail. I love the whole concept. I've been all over the house with it and it's been a joy. I've watched videos, worked from home, and more. It has been challenging adjusting to full touchscreen, but it love it. Hopefully, I'll be able to update once I have a replacement...I'm hoping my problem is just a Fan or hard drive fluke and not common to this device. The speed is awesome. I've got an i7 that it's surpassing in some tasks. The only thing I've found that is horrible is the sound...and again, I'm ok with investing in a small external speaker or headphones.

Waste of Money - Do not buy Dell!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am not the type of person to leave reviews, but my experience with Dell and this laptop has been too negative to not share. I purchased this laptop less than a year ago & it's been consistently freezing and showing the BSOD for several months now. After hours wasted on tech support with them I submitted it to their depot. The hard drive was replaced and the operating system was replaced. I had to pay to back up my files and also lost several expensive programs that I purchased for work. After having the computer back from the depot and reinstalled everything ($1300 spent on reinstallation of programs) within 2 weeks the computer again started freezing. I informed Dell and they said that since the computer was more than 7 days past return the case was closed and I could do a chat with their tech service if needed. Do not waste your money on Dell. I have purchased many computers from them but they have lost my business due to poor customer service and not addressing resolution to a poor functioning computer. Thousands of complaints online about this XPS laptop and Dell does nothing to support. I recommend a Lenovo or a better company with better customer service.

Great balance between size & portability

Piece of junk
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Within a month my screen didn’t work anymore. Thankfully it was within warranty period. After they fixed that about a half year later my battery stopped working. My computer doesn’t even turn on anymore. Absolute waste of money and would not recommend it to anyone. I barely used my computer and repair is not even worth it with the high price they ask to fix the battery issue.
