Customers are impressed with the AVR-X4700H's sound quality, ease of use, and setup process. Many appreciate its powerful performance across multiple channels and the inclusion of Dolby Atmos. While some found the price high and noted that the unit can get warm during use, the positive feedback on features and sound quality outweighs these concerns. The receiver's extensive features and capabilities are also frequently praised.

Paired this with my two new bowers and Wilkins 700 series and kicks hard. Love the amount of channels and will be hooking up a smaller sound system for the kids.

Strong performer in the Denon product line that delivers clean sound across 9 channels. Love this product and would make the same purchase again.

So far, so good. Setup was reasonably easy, considering options available. Ran Audyssey and it sounds great. Now, I need to get a new UHD TV with HDR for full experience.

Great AVR -flexible but complex

An excellent AVR. This is my third Denon AVR and as usual it has great sound and flexibility. Also, as before, it is very complex and Denon no longer supplies a printed manual, which is very unfortunate. Notable changes from prior AVR: all speaker connections are in a row along the back bottom, which is a good change making hookup easier; some legacy input jacks are missing (S-video, component video) or reduced (digital audio). However, the increased number of HDMI inputs is helpful so I was able to eliminate a HDMI switcher device. Just be aware that along with amazing flexibility comes complexity. Not for novices.

Although I'm very experienced with receivers, as this is one of my hobbies, this is the most complex receiver I have ever used. When I initially connected it to my television's ARC, there was absolutely no sound, no matter what I did, and what inputs or settings I changed. So, I had no other alternative but to call customer service at Denon. Luckily, the lady was knowledgeable and it took us at least an hour to set this thing up, and change the speaker configurations, as well as speaker designations, as different modes work with different positions. Furthermore, this expensive receiver did not sound good. I had to call back and spent another 20+ minutes to adjust the sound with another representative. Now, the front and the center speakers sound very decent. The problem is the surround sound and the rear speakers, that sounds very tiny although, the rear speakers have 15 in woofers. That's not all!
There's even a bigger problem, as there is no electric plug for the subwoofer in the back of the receiver, so each time I have to turn the subwoofer on manually, as well as turn it off. My old Denon receiver had the plug which turned the subwoofer on and off automatically. I paid more money for less functionality! I will attempt to contact Denon and again, see if they can do something with the sound of the rear speakers. If not, we will have no other alternative but to return it back to Best Buy. Also I'm still on the fence with the lack of AC plug for the subwoofer, as after after watching television and just listening to music, I forgot to turn off the subwoofer several times. I do not want to burn out my beautiful powered subwoofer. For $2,100 that I paid for this half baked receiver, Denon company could have installed the AC electric outlet in the back of their receiver! This turned out to be an engineering disaster! I would have never bought this thing if I knew of this discrepancy! Very sad that Denon has declined so much, as I used to love their products.

Its a premium reciever for sure, but it still carries a lot of value and bang for your buck. If you want to "buy once, cry once" this is the recuever for you. You can start at a stereo set up, and go all the way up to 7.2.4, or your own 11 channel set up. It has about every sound technology including atmos and auro 3d. Of course you wont find better calibration software than audysey. Build quality is jigh for a denon. It has a silky smooth frint plate that glides down for controls. The remote itself is intuitive.
Only one 8k input though :(

Picked this up on a great sale. If you aren't looking for some of the newest upgrades (4 sub outs, dirac upgradability) then this AVR is a great pickup.

Basic features and sound quality are very good. On-screen setup works fine for me, including Audyssey config. Has all the features I'd expect from a modern AVR.
That said, I have two complaints, both of which *significantly* detract from the usefulness and quality of the unit.
The first issue is that when listening to audio in three different zones, when one or more zones is playing Bluetooth audio inputs, changing the volume in any zone changes the volume in all zones. For example, if you're listening to Bluetooth in zones 2 and 3, and then someone decides to watch TV in zone 1, as soon as they adjust the volume for zone 1, the volume in zones 2 and 3 are changed. I tried to get advice from Denon on the problem, but Denon customer support was useless.
The other major problem is that the AVR app for Android that Denon provides does not work very well. It's incredibly slow even when it works, and often it loses track of the receiver altogether, requiring the app to be force-quit and restarted. It's also missing useful features like the ability to pair a Bluetooth input device through the app. You can switch to Bluetooth input, but only for a device that's already paired. One particularly annoying glitch is that the app uses a background service that creates a notification banner on the phone whenever the app is running. This doesn't impede any functionality at all, but it sure is pointless and bothersome.
