While not my favorite Deftones album, this continues to deliver their signature hard style. Can easily listen start to finish.

Deftones were kind of heading in an odd direction after "White Pony", in my opinion. I found their self-titled CD to be typical, but mediocre at best, almost like they just weren't trying as hard -- and "Saturday Night Wrist" kind of had me losing interest in them (with the exception of Cherry Waves -- great song). After Chi's accident, I wasn't sure what was going to become of the band, but they managed to pull together and create an album that has me interested again.
This album, to describe it... would be very down-tuned guitar (for guitar players, the low string sounds to be as low as an "A" on some songs, maybe "B" on some others), simple riffs that focus on groove; it kind of reaches back to kind of an "Around The Fur" type feel, though not quite... it has its own unique sound. It feels like a lot of the songs sound the same at first, as the guitar work isn't intricate at all (and doesn't need to be). The more you listen and acclimate to them, though, the more distinct the tracks become.
The highlight tracks in my opinion are "Diamond Eyes", "Beauty School", "Rocket Skates" and "Risk". The other songs seem to stand out less, but the more you listen to them, as mentioned, they grow on you instead of seeming to just be "filler" tracks that sound mostly the same.
Overall, a very good effort; a very good album, and definitely worth getting, especially if you were into "Around The Fur", and felt the last album was kind of "off" or "too experimental". They're back to the old formula and sound, the one that I believe worked and gained them their wide fan base. It was a smart move, and this album reflects that.
Hopefully the CD goes on sale with a lower price at release, because the posted price is a bit steep and that sadly drops my rating -- but that is no reflection of the quality of the album. Either way, I'm definitely picking this one up. If I had to personally rate it on my own scale, I would give it a 7-8 on a scale of 10.

This album shows that the Deftones did not miss a step with all of the tragedy that the band has suffered over the last couple of years (with their bass player Chi Cheng being in a semi-conscious state due to an automobile accident). This album though is a generally solid Deftones album. All of the tracks are new music, as they have placed the Eros songs on backburner until Chi can recover and play with the band again. This is a great album to add to your music collection.

Solid, Moody, Back-to-Basics Effort

This is an excellent comeback effort from the Deftones, after the tragic loss of their bass player, Chi Cheng. All the songs are well crafted. They all have that deep, atmospheric and desperate tone that the Deftones are known for. But, the songs are not negative --- they all seem to have a fight or zest for life theme to them. Overall, a great effort and well worth checking out.
