This movie is great overall. Leaves you in suspense and asking many questions about how things came to be in their world. While a very cliche story, (young adult coming into life, finds out shes unique, different and has to overcome the system of control becoming free willed to do whatever without anyone telling her otherwise), it's still entertaining overall. The main star/actress sometimes seems so confused, at least thats how i saw it in her face. Maybe she just doesn't convince me shes truly into the role and believes she is this character. However overall the movie provides plenty of entertainment, mystery, excitement, thrill, action and I think almost anyone could enjoy it. Expect a cliche love story and it felt forced/awkward. Give it a shot though! Minus my minor complaints that I can mostly see past, i left the theater, and after watching it again on bluray, I feel I can rate it 5 stars simply because it entertained enough to watch it more than once.

Great Exclusive Case & Adventurous Movie Only @ BB

The Best Buy Steel Case Exclusive for the movie was really cool. I wish they would have put some kind of detailed backing of the movie info on it instead of that paper cardboard print that wouldn't stay with the case and had to be thrown away but other than that it was really cool. I love the movie a lot and the story was cool, interesting, & Erie. Some of it was hard to wrap my head around cause it was just hard to believe at times but I already foresaw the characters and direction things were going and was able to lose myself in the story which was awesome. I had hoped the movie was gonna be much longer but now I guess I can't wait for the next film to come out but in the mean time definitely go and pick this movie up and watch it; you will love it... Tried to upload 2 pictures for this review but got the "504 Gateway Time" Error so oh well hope you enjoyed reading my review.

    Divergent: Screenwriting 101!

My wife wanted to watch these films because her kids at work are heavy into them, and she wants to keep up with such things. So of course I picked up the steelbooks, because if I'm gonna get them, the steelbook/digibook/etc collector in me is gonna get them right. The film itself looks and sounds nice enough, but it's certainly not for me. As the film went on I continually, partially just to annoy my wife, would pause before I knew something was about to happen and say what was about to occur, after it would she'd give me a "how'd you know?" look and I'd pause again, only to yell "Screenwriting 101!" That being said, I'm sure fans of the book enjoyed this film. She enjoyed it enough, though admitted she's a bit tired of having to watch all these teenage dystopian future pictures. I would recommend to a friend only if they have kids or are into the books themselves.

I like these dystopia stories and the trend to turn books into movies. I like it because I like these things but it seems a little more flat than other contemporary book-to-movie films. It's a good translation from print to action movie but the characters, Tris in particular is just not as believable as I would like. That said we are stuck with her for the duration because as much as it's less than perfect I wouldn't want a new actress. Maybe I expect too much but the bar has been set high! The advantage is hopefully we will watch her develop as an actress along the way and by the end be very impressed. Have you watched the first Harry Potter in a while? The good story helps cover the ok acting. I'm not saying it's horrible, just lacking. I'm sure it will grow on me. Maybe a new director can bring Tris to life, we will see because I will be watching!

Of course, as in all adaptations, this movie was not a 100% adaptation. But it was pretty good regardless. It has a good mix of thoughtful and action. Synopsis: This story is based on a futuristic Chicago. Society is based into 5 groups called factions. The heroine, Tris is born into one faction but at a Choosing ceremony she chooses another - changing her life course. She has mental capabilities that are considered dangerous - she's a Divergent. Throughout the movie she faces her fears while helping others, losing others. She learns that she is more than what society deems her to be, finds courage she wasn't sure she had and learns the true meaning of life. If you love movies with a strong female lead, this is definitely a movie to see.

This first chapter in the Divergent series turns Shailene Woodley into an action star. A future world of a organized society that separates special human talents to improve the roles of humans in a controlled society. This movie was great enough to create sequals that were worthy. Moral dilemmas , values and individual contributions will be evaluated. Great film. Bought this in the 4K Ultra HDR version . Looked great and the sound field was execellent.

The movie was a good watch despite what I perceived to be some plot deficiencies. It is run of the mill as it is in the current trend of the young female heroine much like Twilight, Huger Games, The Host, & other movies of that ilk but it does work. I thought pic quality on my Samsung 50" 1080P plasma with Samsung 3D BD player was a bit too dull. I think that was the film-maker's intention in most parts but when the movie had scenes that I thought could "pop" it failed to do so. As a direct corollary Hunger Games 1&2 pic quality blows Divergent out of the water. Extras were solid - just enough to enjoy and enhance viewing experience although it looks like Target won out on extras with this release but IMO the steelbook packaging is BB for the win. Wal-Mart is in a distant 3rd on this release.

A Thinking Person's Tale of Dystopia

Divergent is an enjoyable, though cautionary tale of factions in a society previously torn asunder by war and discord. Shailene Woodley stars as Tris, a young woman coming of age and forced to make a ritualistic choice to join the faction that most suits her skills and personality. The twist of this film is revealed in the title, where Tris is unable to pledge herself to just one of the 5 government sanctioned factions. While this movie may appeal more to the younger, Twilight-loving generation, its universal themes of society, family, belonging and governmental oppression speak to all age groups. The director manages to keep the subject matter universal while touching on matters of politics ever present in modern day society. I highly recommend this film. - Chipper F. Xavier, Esq.

Well worth an evening rental! This was a great movie! I think the acting performed by Shailene Woodley (Tris) and Theo James (Four) was superb. The character of Tris helped draw me in to the movie as it was clear that she was battling with human emotions and you couldn't help but feel for her and also root for her. And Four further went through an emotional transformation from being a leader of one of the factions to being Tris' closest ally. He also played a crucial rule at several points in providing help for Tris at times where she faced a threat that would have killed her without other help. Plus there was an unexpected twist (which I won't reveal because I don't want to publish a spoiler) when we found out the motivation as to why Four did what he did.

    Divergent True to Book

Divergent, overall is a great movie. It stayed true to the book for the most part leaving out only minor and insignificant details that aren't necessary for the plot and storyline. Actors selected for the roles fit perfectly with the role and personality. The main characters you end up getting close to through the movie. A few comedies scenes creates a few spots for comic relief. The casing steelbook is amazing! Different from the regular bluray packaging. I for one am a fan of the steelbook series since they usually have unique covers compared to the standard bluray packaging. Looking forward to the sequel and future steelbook packaging for the trilogy

Divergent, the first book in the series by Veronica Roth, lays the groundwork for the Trilogy. We meet the main characters, we find out how this world is set up to work; the parameters. The book begins as Trish and her brother are preparing for the Choosing Ceremony. In the culture it is used to choose which group or faction you will live and work with for the rest of your days. A pretty important decision and one that cannot be changed. The book is a story of this society, functioning in "Old Chicago" (USA) after wars that destroyed the society and what came next. Interesting look at society and those who try to control it.

This movie was a purchase after seeing via Netflix. I enjoyed the plot and found several of the key points on our current society spot on. The movie is not beginning to end action but the action sequences present not only entertain but drive the film. Acoustically the film is impressive with wide dynamics that will sound well on a mid level system. Visually the movie does well. There is lots of subtly in this movie but also enough that is obvious one will not scratch their head. While it is teen friendly (being based on a book series I believe) those under 11 or so would probably be lost in the plot and/or some parents may find some parts not as appropriate.

Awesome Movie! One of my favorites! If you like sequels then this is definitely for you! This is the first of 3 movies that are currently available to watch. The 2 main characters have a awesome chemistry and a building relationship onscreen. It’s romantic in ways for the hopeless romantics, but jammed packed with action for those who favor that type of movie. Great Cast, Love Ashley Judd and Kate Winslet as Suppoorting actors! If anyone has any questions about this film please feel free to ask me! I’ve watched it a million times and still Love it! Definitely a Great Movie!

    A Commentary On Our Society

A movie which reflects a bit of our society. There are five factions. Abnegation, who are selfless, humble and in charge of the government, are wrongfully accused of corruption by the Erudites so that the Erudites can use that as an excuse for controlling the other factions and wiping out the Abnegation faction. If you consider Abnegation to people such as good Christians, and Erudites to be elitests, I think it pretty well sums up what is happening in our society. I would have given the movie 5 stars, but I got the DVD/Blu-ray combination pack and the Blu-ray did not work. The previews on the Blu-ray worked, but not the movie. The DVD worked just fine.

This novel was something new and fresh, and the movie delivers what readers are looking for. Woodley shines as Tris, and her body of work continues to let fans forgive her questionable talent reputation as set by her role in Secret Life of an American Teenager. I have begun to blame her poor performance on that show on the writing and the immaturity of the show's audience. I am a huge fan of her in The Descendants, The Spectacular Now, and The Fault in Our Stars, and I cannot wait to see her grow even more with the popularity she is gaining in major roles. Can't wait for the sequel.

I spent a few extra bucks and picked up the limited edition steel case version- well worth the money. I bought this without ever seeing it in the cinema, but I had heard great things about it from friends and family. I will save the detalied plot analysis for the next reviewer, but overall it was thought-provoking and held my attention throughout the entire length of the movie. The ending was also somewhat of a cliffhanger so it also left me eager to catch the sequel as soon as it comes to theaters. I would strongly recommend this movie to anyone who has liked Hunger Games to any extent- this for me was a more epic & well thought out version of that.

I'm a viewer who isn't familiar with Veronica Roth's Divergent book series so, I fall into the general movie population. On the outside, this looks like another young adult adaptation Hollywood is trying to cash in on. So far, less than a handful have been successful and good films. Despite this story falling into the post apocalyptic world, it does have it's own view of separating from another recent success (The Hunger Games Series). I gave it a try and I like the struggles the main character, Tris, goes through. Obviously, more is indicated in the books, but for some one who hasn't read any of the books, I found the film intriguing.

I had to get this for my child who was doing a compare/contrast between the book(which we got for her Kindle) and the film(which we bought on DVD since it was in the bargain bin). The movie wasn't bad, but it needed a more thorough backstory for it to completely make sense, hence read the book. This hurts some of the point to the secondary plot, which probably drives the series. Definitely a B-grade film. Probably had close to $10Million sunk into it and they did a fantastic job of stretching it without looking cheap. Had to have been shot on either digital video tape or digital media and not "film look" post processing, giving it a very "antisceptic" clean look that most people prefer for TV but not film. The film does merit a second viewing. With an understanding of the basic story and plot lines and no longer distracted by many of the very cool special effects and action sequences(often combined), you can really dig deeper and pick up the not as obvious elements, which while not immensely important, do add to not only an appreciation for the movie itself, but also to a greater understanding of the overall film. They did a decent job making this film stand alone, basically giving you nearly everything you need for enjoying the film. Still this isn't going to win awards. It's below the level of a mainstream film, yet is a step above most indy films. It almost seems like it was adapted from the book for a premium type cable-tv type service as a much hyped feature. This would be a perfect film for SCI-FI and a few other networks like that. Based on the price for the series on BluRay, if the price dropped a bit, I'd probably buy all 3 in the series. Maybe if there was a good priced boxed set would be nice if under $30. I'm saying "not recommending to a friend" only because I think this better appeals to those who read the book. Having the extra information really helps.

I went back and forth whether or not I wanted to watch the movie without reading the book first. As usual, I watched the movie first. Divergent is a great movie, which in turn made me want to start reading the books even more. One of the best things about it is that it's different.. Not a remake, reboot, or the same tired plot that seems to get recycled over and over again. While it's marketed more towards teens, it can definitely hold the attention of a wide variety of age groups. Action, drama, romance, violence... Divergent has a little something for everyone.
