If you had wings....
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drone is a first of it's class for me, being one that has to be registered with the FAA and one that you get a view via goggles, as well as first drone for me with this type of controller. To sum it up in one line - it's like you as a person are taking flight. The controller is like using a joystick in a flight simulator, except there is no base for it. It simply reads your motions and the drone responds. Having logged many hours in PC flight sims, this type of control came very naturally to me - MUCH easier than the "two stick" controllers, which had a bit of a learning curve. This just feels natural to me! You'll notice that the display in the goggles is spectacularly clear and high res - it's not just the goggles, it's anything recorded by the camera in the drone. It's unbelievably crisp! The dynamic contrast between brights and darks and between colors is amazing and the recorded motion is smooth. It really is like you're a bird and you're seeing what the bird sees. The Avata is a little noisy... Saying that is like standing next to a jet engine and saying it's a little noisy... It's downright LOUD, but what it lacks in stealth it more than makes up for with fun and enjoyment. I strongly recommend for beginners to fly this in a controlled space. I myself came in to work after-hours when nobody else was here and flew it indoors in the gym on campus just to get the feel for everything and not have to worry about losing the drone or crashing into anything other than walls. I went through 5 charges in one evening - I was able to get roughly 17-18 minutes of flight time at that point. Recommendations - find a spare battery or two or three, you're going to want them! Also, some snap-on protective bumper rings, just in case you do crash (The drone is extremely sturdy, but I always like to play it safe).

So much fun!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always loved my DJI mavic for its ability to take amazing footage and float through the air at perspectives I've never seen before so I figured I'd really like the Avata, but wow I had no idea what an fpv drone could do and just how much fun they could be. The drone itself is incredibly small and light weight. It feels sturdy and the built in propeller gaurds have already saved me a few times. This thing is made to go fast and can take a little beating along the way. The battery life is ok. 18 minutes of flight time. Definitely less than my bigger drone but I guess this might be on par with other fpv drones. The goggle V2 are really cool and such a fun way to pilot a drone. The quality is not quite as good as some of the vr googles you may have tried, but they are easily enough to get going and provide a completely different way of experiencing flight. It really is the coolest way to pilot a drone. The motion controller is interesting, I'm not sure if I love it or not. It's somewhat difficult to get the hang of and for so.e reason I feel like I'd have more control with a traditional controller. Though I'm not sure how much of that has to do with what I expect the drone to be able to maneuver vs what is actually possible. Overall it's a great package to get into the world of fpv without needing to build your own drone. It flys really well and is able to get really cool fpv shots along the way.

Fun and easy!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drone is a great all-in-one package! If you've been looking for a first-person drone experience, this one is a perfect entry. The experience is very immersive and the controls are extremely intuitive. The version 2 motion controller is significantly better than the last one. This one comes with a joystick and a function that lets you go backwards with the drone which comes in handy when first learning how to control it. I felt comfortable with only using the motion controller and did not need additional controllers. The goggles are comfortable to wear and they come with adjustable lenses. If you're like me and use glasses, this is an awesome feature! Of course, if your prescription is strong, then the adjustable levels might not be enough but you can get custom lenses with your prescription that will fit the goggles. The setup was straightforward and only took about 30 minutes all-in-all. Build quality is top-tier. The drone is compact and the blades are protected well so it fits in most of my backpacks with zero issues. Camera quality is great in well-lit scenarios so you can get amazing aerial shots. The software does a great job of making video look fluid and effortless. Night-time quality is not there, but I usually stick to daytime flying anyway. I recommend this drone if you're looking to have a fun and easy experience!

Great way to try a new perspective
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This kit is an updated version of the DJI Avata Pro-View Combo; it comes with the latest DJI RC Motion 2 controller, upgraded from the DJI Motion Controller (DJI is rather inconsistent with product naming). The included Avata drone and Goggles 2 are basically unchanged since their debut about a year ago. DJI also currently offers a "little sibling" Explorer Combo that just swaps out the Goggles 2 for Goggles Integra. (The older Fly Smart Combo, which now seems to be out of production, included older generations of both the motion controller and goggles.) All this is to say that with the Pro-View Combo you're getting DJI's latest, top-spec equipment in one package. I'll talk about my impressions with each component first, and then some overall thoughts. First off, the Avata drone itself. DJI has packed the tech from their older FPV Drone into a new and smaller form factor. (But it still is not under the 250g FAA limit here in the U.S. and must be flown with Remote ID active.) This means it has a lot of the flight stabilization features you might be familiar with from other DJI camera drones like the Mavic, but with slightly more dynamic performance and even the option to enable full manual control to perform aerobatics with. (Note, however, that you'll need to purchase the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 for this - the included RC Motion 2 only works in the Normal and Sport stabilized modes.) The Avata is a "cinewhoop" style drone; as the name implies, this style of drone has found a place in doing film work with drones. Avata didn't disappoint me there - it captures great onboard video using the same camera that is used for the FPV transmission. Accompanying the Avata in this bundle is DJI's highest-end goggles, the Goggles 2. (Not to be confused with the previous generation of DJI's FPV goggles, which is known as the "FPV Goggles v2." Yes, DJI's naming is confusing. In any case, if you get this combo, you'll have the top-of-the-line set.) They are top-notch quality, with a compact, lightweight design and large, gorgeous internal screens that really immerse you in the picture. If you're an eyeglass wearer, you won't be able to wear them with the goggles, but the goggles feature a convenient built-in diopter adjustment mechanism to simulate your lens prescription. (If that's not enough, you can get custom lenses as well.) Power is provided by an included external battery pack that has excellent battery life in my experience, and charges via USB C. Unfortunately, I found the Goggles 2 to be a extraordinarily uncomfortable fit for my face until I purchased an aftermarket foam pad. But that alternate padding worked wonderfully, and now the Goggles 2 feel quite good. The last component that rounds this bundle out is the DJI RC Motion 2 controller, and it's definitely a compelling reason to consider this combo. Instead of getting a gamepad-style controller with two sticks to control the drone, the RC Motion 2 is a cross between a joystick and Nintendo Wii nunchuck controller. You tilt your hand to "aim" a circular target that appears on the live video feed, and pull a trigger to make the drone fly towards that target. The Motion 2 controller also lets you "push" the trigger to fly backwards, away from your target. Once you get familiar with the basics of controlling the drone this way, you can enable the head-tracking feature of the Goggles 2. When you do this, the Avata can also adjust its orientation and camera angle to follow your head movements without changing the drone's course. This lets you "look around" while you're flying. Besides the sheer fun and immersion of this set-up, the head tracking opens up some possibilities for video shots like keeping a point of interest in view as you fly past it. This control system is very beginner-friendly and approachable. As I mentioned above, the Avata does require registration with the FAA because it is over 250g with the battery installed, and therefore it must also be flown with the Remote ID system active. (There are other FAA requirements for flying that differ depending on whether you are flying purely recreationally, or for commercial purposes. IF you are not familiar with these requirements for responsible drone flight, I would encourage you to research them.) In order for the Remote ID system to work, you will need to tether your phone to the the Goggles 2 at all times while flying, so that the goggles can use the GPS coordinates from your phone. The phone tethering is a bit of a hassle, since you'll have both the battery power cable and USB C cable to the phone dangling from your goggles. (If you don't like the sound of this, look for DJI's Goggles Integra; those goggles come with an integrated GPC receiver so that you do not need to tether your phone, and also an integrated battery pack.) Over the last year, DJI has brought support for the Goggles 2 and RC Motion 2 to many of their camera drones, going back to the Mavic 3. If you already own another recent DJI drone, there's a good chance you might be able to use the goggles and controller included in this combo with your other drone as well. That is a really nice benefit to this combo that I wanted to note, because the added versatility helps justify the purchase price. I said in my headline that this combo is a great way to try a different perspective, and I think that's true in a few ways. Obviously, first-person perspective is the big one. Personally, I think it's an amazing experience to feel like you're flying. This kit is especially great for someone that has flown a DJI Air or Mavic and wants to get into first-person perspective drone flight, and the Avata is a fun little drone. The Pro-View Combo is even more compelling if you have a recent DJI drone that you can use it with in addition to the Avata. The other perspective this combo grants is one of control using hand movements with the RC Motion 2, almost like the movements you would use to fly a real airplane. Even if you don't have experience with a DJI drone, this style of control is approachable and intuitive. Even if you're someone that has experience with FPV, you can have a fun and relaxing experience cruising around with the still experience a different perspective on controlling the drone with the RC Motion 2 in this combo.

Great FPV Drone, Needs a few tweaks
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I started years ago with a cheap drone and moved to the Mavic Air 2, then the Mini 3 Pro. Since becoming proficient with those, I've wanted to try a FPV drone. The Avata is great for what I'm looking for. Setup is easy, just download the DJI Fly app and follow the instructions. You will have three things to charge before the first use. The drone battery, the controller and the goggles (which have a separate battery pack with a cable). After flying drones with a standard controller (both using my phone and a controller with its own screen), getting setup to fly the Avata can be a little daunting. There is a lot that you have to have to fly. Between the drone, goggles and their dongle battery pack, your phone which is connected to the goggles with another cable, and the controller, it's a lot. If you're not at home and have a table or something to place everything on, you almost need a fishing vest to have enough pockets to hold everything. With that said, it's awesome to fly. With the goggles, you're fully immersed in the flight. All you see is what the drone sees. It's incredible. This is the perfect drone if you want to get action videos of someone biking on a trail, chasing a boat, or something like that. The controller is very intuitive to use. You simply squeeze the trigger to move forward and twist your wrist to turn. It couldn't be easier. To move upwards, you simply twist your wrist back toward you and you'll see an up arrow in the sky. Squeeze the trigger and you're moving vertically. The same works for descending. My first flight was great. I was just taking it slow, getting used to the controller and the goggles. I just flew around the yard and got comfortable enough to fly around the base of a tree and around my shed. I started slowly picking up speed. All of your information is on the screen in the goggles, from altitude to speed. I realized that I wasn't going all that fast, but with the goggles it seemed much faster. On my second flight I was more comfortable and started flying slowly through trees avoiding branches. I continued to do this for the duration of the battery (about 15 minutes). The Avata is quite small and can maneuver through tight spaces. Being an FPV drone, the only sensors for obstacle avoidance are downward. It's not like a standard DJI drone that has forward, rearward sensors. There is an emergency stop button on the controller and once pressed, the Avata will stop extremely quickly and hover. This is great if you're heading towards something quickly and don't have any options to avoid it. You can also let off of the "throttle" and it will stop quickly. My third flight is when things got strange. The Avata has the ability to recover itself. If you hit an obstacle it will attempt to right itself and then hover. What I still haven't figured out is what happened on my third flight. My goal was to fly upwards to 200' AGL and then practice flying fast and maneuvering. This way I would be well above the trees (roughly 75' tall for the tallest one). With absolutely zero wind, I took off, made a circle around my yard about 5' off the ground, went to the center of the yard where there are no trees and initiated a climb. Since my goal was to get to 200', I was watching the altitude. As soon as I reached 153', the Avata flipped over, recovered itself, then flipped over and over. While trying to recover itself, it was moving laterally. It made it over the trees and then crashed to the ground through them. Thankfully, the branches helped lessen the fall. I was able to find it and noticed that a propeller had broken off. It was never found. It does come with two spare propellers. There was a lot of debris (chewed up leaves, pine needles, etc.) caked on the drone. I cleaned it, replaced the propeller and it flies fine. I have no idea what happened or why, but it does make me question flying it the way I want to. I want to be able to fly quickly in and out of obstacles (trees, etc.). However, after this incident I'm not sure I want to fly it above 10' since this seems like it could happen at any time. I understand on the standard controllers the shutdown/propeller stop motion (both joysticks down and inward), but this controller doesn't do that. I haven't had a chance to reach out to DJI on this incident yet, however, everyone that I've talked to have said that their customer service is great. Hopefully they can check the log of the flight and find out what happened. Overall, it's a great drone and opens up a lot of possibilities of what you can do for videos. However, I'm hesitant to recommend it because of what happened on that flight. It would be a lot to deal with (all of the cables, phone, goggles, etc.) for a beginner. It would be nice if it came with a case. I will be picking up a foam lined case to make it easier to transport. At this price point, I think it should come with one.

Durable and almost great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the most durable and well built DJI drone, range is great, goggles are great, motion controller is a miss. Need the regular controller for more fun. Turtle mode doesn't work in high grass.
