An entry level drone missing important features

A completely honest review from a professional part 107 licensed drone pilot. DJI is an awesome company. I have had the pleasure of using their products since the Phantom 2 came out years ago. Since then, I have used many of their consumer drones (as well as other companies drones) for my real estate photography business. Needless to say, I always come back to DJI, since I truly believe they are currently (and really always have been) the best on the market for my personal needs.
Ranging from very small, to very large, and everything in-between, DJI seems to have every range of drone covered for beginners up to professionals. That said, I am not sure why this was released. Was it that they wanted to make a drone more accessible for first time pilots? That is really the only thing I can think of. And if that’s truly the case, first time pilots need a little more.
While I can certainly understand the reasoning behind having a more affordable lightweight drone for entry level pilots, there are still things that make me scratch my head with this one. Let's start with obstacle avoidance. It seems to me that a drone aimed at beginners would greatly benefit from obstacle avoidance. With this drone, OA has been removed I’m guessing to save money for the consumer and again, make this drone more affordable. As a long time drone pilot, I remember back to when I first started flying and having OA was a necessity for me as I learned literally on-the-fly. This removal alone makes me recommend stepping up to a Mini 3 Pro for any new pilot.
Other reasons to pay a little extra for the Mini 3 Pro version are not quite as important for beginners, but there are enough reasons overall that again, I don’t see a need for the Mini 3 (non Pro) version. Features like shooting in 4K60fps, the ability to shoot in a flat color profile (for grading and dynamic range), focus tracking, and Master Shots, to name a few, are all missing with the standard Mini 3. I do realize that the latter points may be unnecessary to some beginners, but trust me, once you get a feel for flying and creating, you will wish you had the extra features the Mini 3 Pro provides.
All of that said, the quality of the camera and how it performs is the single most important feature of any aerial camera in my opinion. The DJI Mini 3 will satisfy most people with its image quality for both photo and video outings. The photos can be shot in RAW (DNG format) and are easily manipulated in external editing software (see my RAW vs edited industrial smokestack images). The video clips are good for a starter drone and if you are in a decently lit area, you should be able to get some great shots. Even low light shots will benefit from having a fixed f/1.7 aperture lens and dual native ISO at 100 and 800. The camera is good enough to make some great memories, but if you want to use this for professional work, purchase the Pro version, or even go for the Mavic Air 2S, or further up the DJI chain! All that said, this makes a great second / backup drone that is tiny and won’t take much room in a bag or case.
Lastly, DJI is great at implementing safety features for their drones, including regular updates to it’s fly safe database, as well as mapping your flights, and find my drone if you accidentally crash. But again, arguably the most important safety feature for beginners is missing in obstacle avoidance. This is ultimately why I highly recommend spending a little extra for the Mini 3 Pro. Obstacle avoidance is a must for inexperienced pilots.
PROS:
Excellent size and weight, perfect for travel or taking pretty much anywhere
The controller with the built in screen is a huge bonus and looks sharp
Very fast setup to take off with the built in screen controller
Having three batteries will get you a ton of footage
DJI is known for stable software and controller to craft connection
The camera shoots in both landscape and portrait orientation (for social media)
CONS:
No obstacle avoidance
In order to keep the weight down, the drone feels very thin
Missing 4K60
Missing Master Shots / Focus Tracking
Missing D-Cine color profile

The DJI Mini 3 is a drone that offers an impressive set of features in a compact and portable design. Its 4K camera captures high-quality video and photos with great detail, and the three-axis gimbal ensures stability and smooth footage.
The drone also has a range of up to 10 kilometers and can fly for up to 31 minutes on a single charge. In addition, it has obstacle avoidance sensors and can fly in windy conditions.
Overall, the DJI Mini 3 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-quality drone that is easy to use and transport. It's perfect for amateur photographers and videographers who want to capture stunning aerial footage without breaking the bank.
However,something to consider is this
comparison of the DJI Mini 3 and DJI Mini 3 Pro.
The DJI Mini 3 Pro comes with a few upgrades over the standard Mini 3. Firstly, the Mini 3 Pro has a slightly better camera with a 1/2.3-inch sensor and a higher bitrate for video recording. It can also shoot RAW photos, which is a feature that the Mini 3 lacks.
Another significant difference is the Mini 3 Pro's enhanced connectivity options. It supports OcuSync 2.0, which provides a more stable and reliable connection between the drone and the remote controller, allowing for longer-range flights. The Mini 3, on the other hand, uses Wi-Fi connectivity, which can be less reliable in certain environments.
In terms of flight performance, both drones have similar flight times and maximum speeds. However, the Mini 3 Pro has a slightly better wind resistance rating, which means it can handle stronger winds.
Ultimately, the choice between the DJI Mini 3 and DJI Mini 3 Pro depends on your specific needs and budget. If you're a casual user who doesn't need the extra features of the Pro version, the Mini 3 is a great choice. However, if you're a more serious photographer or videographer who needs the improved camera and connectivity options, the Mini 3 Pro may be worth the extra investment.

Fantastic Drone for beginners with many features

I have had many drones over the years, from the simplest to the most sophisticated with zoom lenses, etc.
The DJI Mini 3 is a very capable small compact and lightweight drone, aimed at the beginner market.
The interesting thing about the DJI mini three is it has many features that you would expect to find on some of the most advanced drones, including 4K video (albeit at at 30 FPS) and the trick shots that we have grown to know and love from DJI, including the dronie, the boomerang, etc.
If you are new to the drone world, any drone that is 250 g or more needs to be registered with the FAA, less than 250 g and the drone does not have to be registered. The DJI Mini 3 with the regular capacity battery comes in at 249g which leaves it under the 250g threshold, and therefore does not need to be registered with the FAA.
The DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo RC comes with the drone, three batteries, battery charging station, remote control with beautiful LCD screen and extra propellers, in case of damage, along with a very small Phillips head screwdriver, as these blades are changed by removing the screw that fastens them to the motor. With the utilization of the DJI RC there is no need for you to use your cell phone as a screen for drone operation which is a great feature and one of the main reasons why you should consider this kit.
Once I took the drone, the batteries, battery, charger, and DJI RC, out of the box. I put the batteries and controller on the charger. They both charged rather quickly, and I was ready to fly.
As with almost all electronics, I immediately had to update to the latest firmware, and once that was done, I was good to go.
The DJI Mini 3 grabbed enough satellites in my area to get a GPS signal, which enables it to record the home point where you are taking off and so it can land easily and accurately once done with your flying session.
I took off and started taking pictures and video. Video looks great but again as mentioned earlier the 4K is only at 30 frames per second, you can get 60 frames per second at 2.7 K however and photos look great, however photos are only 12 megapixels which limits image quality somewhat.
Of note was the flying time which is advertised at 38 minutes, I experienced around 29 minutes flying time but when I was flying for this review, it was somewhat windy so that will limit your flying time as the drone continues to fight the wind to keep position.
While the DJI Mini 3 is billed as a drone for beginners, a major feature it lacks, when compared to more advanced drones, are collision avoidance sensors. There are two sensors on the bottom to help assist in landing, but there is no forward, side or rear collision avoidance sensors on this drone. Therefore, keeping the DJI mini three within eye line is more important and or making sure you are not backing up while flying or flying to the side without understanding your surroundings, as you will crash.
With the three batteries in the included carrying case, you have the ability for some long flying sessions which is what having a drone is all about.
As mentioned earlier I have had, and have a number of more advanced drones than the DJI mini three however, this drone is very quickly becoming my favorite as it is small and compact, and I envision myself taking it everywhere with me.
I would not hesitate to get this drone.

I have taken many pictures and captured a lot of video throughout the years while using many different devices. However, the DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo RC takes things to new heights. <pun intended> Let me first start out by saying that I have not owned a drone until this one, but I have always thought about it. With that being said, I am glad I waited because this is amazing.
The DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo RC comes with the drone, the remote control, 3 batteries, cables for charging both, screwdriver, and extra propellers. All of this is contained inside a carrying case as well. Once out of the box, everything is pretty smooth to set up. The controller and the drone are already paired together so that helps. I will say that things are a tad confusing because the setup screens on the remote control’s screen talk about adding your phone to give you a screen. I couldn’t find one version or option of the setup that didn’t reference it either. I could be missing it, but that’s a huge miss on DJI’s part because that screen on the controller is HUGE!!!
From what I have read, and gathered from other drone owners I know, the screen is a great perk. I can say that I agree with them so far. Using it for take off, landing, and capturing content is so nice. The screen is vibrant and responds well to touch when needed. Since I am still learning to fly a drone, I’ll take all of the tips and tools that are present on screen. Taking it a step further, most gamers will be accustomed to using the various button placements to capture video or take pictures. Adding the spinning dials for panning and zooming takes a bit to adjust to, but it’s not too difficult.
As it pertains to flying the DJI Mini 3, I found it very easy after consuming several videos in DJI’s library. Like I said before, the screen is a huge asset here too. Obviously, the one button touch for takeoff and landing help a ton. The joysticks are very responsive and the flight is very smooth on all levels. I was easily able to fly around an open field gracefully while changing altitude. To go along with that, the rotation and side-to-side movements were slick as well. During this time, I was able to capture a few pictures as well as a video. Everything is very crisp and the quality of everything is terrific. I certainly look forward to using it more when things warm up.
With it being super windy and cold over these last few weeks in the Chicagoland area, I didn’t want to push it too much and risk losing or damaging the drone. However, you can believe that it will be used when things warm up. I can already envision the great pictures and videos that will come out of our lake visits as well as the other adventures we will take. All in all, the DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo RC is going to be tons of fun and a wonderful addition to capture the memories wherever we are. I highly recommend it for recreational enjoyment and I can totally see it being a worthwhile business investment for those that could use it too.

Better than I expected. Perfectly does what is advertised and really is easy to use. Just remember that the controls act as if you are 'in the cockpit' of the drone so when it faces you, controls seem reversed; but, it doesn't take long to learn this. If in doubt, simply release controls and it hovers 'in spot'. Great video and completely worthwhile. Having 3 batteries makes this even more useful!

The mini 3 pro is better than My old Air 2. It is small, light weight and is actually pretty good in the wind. Tried it out with 20Mph winds with 30Mph gusts and it didn't get blown away. The camera is high quality with the 1/1.3" Sensor. It makes Long hyperlapses with the larger batteries i bought (25 seconds)! The RC controller is quality too. I have been using it with the Air 2S.

This is my first drone. I have put in about 10hrs of flight time and it has performed well. I use it for a little 21st century cowboying, to check my cattle, when they move to my bottom pasture. It grabs their attention when I hover above them, yet it does not spook them. It does a great job for surveillance of the Ponderosa.

I love this drone overall the DJI mini 3 fly more combo is an excellent bargain for the price and they do honor the warranty which is totally worth getting but when mine stopped working they were willing to do the warranty exchange except for they couldn’t because they are all out of stock so im without a drone until they come in from the vendor and they can give me no time frame on when that will be ….i hope its not super long because i would love to be flying again ….im giving 5 stars for the drone overall but i really wish they could have them available or at least give us an idea of how long the wait could possibly be and also the pro upgrade is literally double the price ….i wish it was more affordable because i could greatly benefit from the obstacle avoidance feature specially since theres the mini 4 and mini 4 pro out now but theyre sold out too
