If you're a fan of The Shining, I dont understand how you can not enjoy this movie! Its arguably, Just as good, maybe even better but for different reasons. The 4k transfer is fantastic and to my surprise, this did include a digital copy as well even though it does not say it does!

I'm a huge The Shining fan. Like I've probably seen it around 200 times huge. I knew I was going to love Doctor Sleep from what I read about it and was not disappointed. It's one of those movies that could've been 10 hours long and it wouldn't get old. Haven't watched the Director's cut yet so I will let you know. Picture and sound are excellent. Get this movie!

This turned out better than expected. The first 30 minutes or so, I wasn’t sure. It winded up being really, really good. Great story and Rebecca Ferguson was awesome as Rose the Hat!

This Dr. Sleep steelbook set is a great set, you get two dvds, plus a digital copy. The movie is ok. Being a fan of The Shining, I was a little disappointed. It was good, but too long. I found myself losing interest about halfway through, but regained interest towards the end. Still, it's worth a watch. The acting was good, and they did a great job casting actors who look like the actors from the original movie.

This movie is SOOOOOOO much better than it has any right to be and is a high point for Mike Flanagan who is always worthwhile. The director's cut is by far the better film with about 30 minutes of character development and extra color. It's probably my favorite movie of the last 5 years and I can't recommend it enough. Warner's released it at the wrong time with the wrong advertising and it's criminal. My only caveat is that this is also available on 4k UHD- but the preferred director's cut is only available on blu-ray for both sets. I promise if you like this movie you'll be all in on the director's cut. The UHD does offer a digital code for 4k UHD of the director's cut, but I find even on my 4k set-up, a quality 1080p disc still compares well to a 4k stream. So, ymmv, as to whether the 4k digital is worth the extra cost.

One of the better film adaptations of a King novel

The ever-beautiful Rebecca Ferguson and a favorite from the Fargo series, Zahn McClarnon team up to bring us some somewhat scary, but more so eerie/creepy moments in this adaptation of King's Doctor Sleep. For the most part, and with the help of Ewan McGregor who plays an alcoholic, grown-up version of The Shining's Danny Torrence, they pull it off. While Doctor Sleep is a rather drawn-out and, mostly, slowish-moving film, it still has enough to it, to not lose one's attention. The story-line is solid and engaging, although those unfamiliar with the book and looking for outright horror and gore, will find little satisfaction. There are a couple of scenes which can be construed as "horrific", but in my opinion, Doctor Sleep is not really a "horror flick" by definition. To me, it is more like an intense drama about good vs evil, with a couple of well-done 'end-of-life' scenes thrown in. :) What I most enjoyed about it, is that in this day and age where practically every story ever has already been made into a movie, this one's plot was just a bit off the beaten path and came across as slightly new and original in its approach, while still pretty seamlessly tying it in to the well-known classic: The Shining. If I had to add one con, it would be a somewhat minor one, in that, at times, the girl who plays Abra (Kyliegh Curran), who also possesses 'the shining', and who can communicate with Danny, delivers her lines in almost a stone-like manner, and at other times as if she is rapidly reading. It occurred one too many times, and I found that it took me out of the movie for just a bit. While good, the scenes leading up to the ending are a bit predictable, and the 'showdown' (remember, good vs. evil) leaves a little to be desired. For the most part, however, I can live with it, seeing as Rebecca Ferguson saves it by just being in it, and King and the creators do their best to come full circle. In short, like the entire film itself, it is satisfying-enough to where one can feel as if watching it, was time well spent.

This film has a creepiness factor that is not found in most current offerings. I saw this film when it was at the theater and even with morons to the right of me on their smart phone and another idiot getting a phone call in the row in front me, this film still gave me a most enjoyable creepout that I haven't experienced since Silence of the Lambs. All performances are brilliant and the recreation of the Overlook in disrepair was spot on. Many things to look for in almost every scene from start to finish. Old favorites from The Shining are here. The eerie but beautiful Wendy Carlos score is also here. The "feel" of the first film as well as Stanley Kubric's film style are also here. This blu ray has atmos sound (excellent), great video quality and lots of extras. See if you recognize who plays Jack Torrance without help from the credits or extras...I was floored! Great film. Oh, my days of going to the theater are way over. Shame on all of you who ruin any film (or any performance) with your addiction to the evil electronic zombifiers known as Smart? phones!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Fitting Sequel to Both the Novel and Film

How does one craft a forty year-later sequel to what is widely considered one of if not the greatest horror film of all time that is also based on a sequel novel by an author that didn't appreciate the aforementioned film adaptation? In other words, how does one approach making a film based on a book that is the sequel to the original source material as well as being a sequel to the film adaptation that the author of both novels didn't care for? Tricky, right? Complicated? Complex? Beyond difficult? Sure, it's all of these things and while I've not read any Stephen King in some time (we're talking probably high school) and wasn't aware the master of horror had penned a sequel to The Shining in 2013 it seems inevitable still that this is where we are six years later with the one hundred and fifty-two minute Doctor Sleep. In the same amount of time since King's follow-up was released, writer/director Mike Flanagan burst onto the scene with a feature length adaptation of his short film, Oculus, that paved the way for him to become Netflix's go-to guy for original horror content as the filmmaker not only produced original films for the streaming service like Before I Wake and Hush, but also got his feet wet with another King adaptation in 2017's Gerald's Game then going on to oversee the wildly successful TV series, The Haunting of Hill House, that premiered to rave reviews last year. This is all to say that Flanagan has developed a style all his own and more importantly-a penchant for gauging the type of scares and imagery to best represent the horrors of a given story-meaning he's able to grasp the characters and their circumstances in a way where the scares aren't for the sake of the genre, but are in fact appropriate and even further, indicative, of the type of narrative being disclosed. Flanagan does this through soft, but illuminating character moments in which he latches onto certain aspects of an individual bound to serve a significant role in the story he's telling and then track the arc of said character trait through the more genre-specific events that naturally tend to enlighten the character to this side of themselves they may have either not previously considered or wanted to face in ways that are emotionally compelling and thematically resonant. Thus is the case with adult Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) in Doctor Sleep as Flanagan's now distinctive approach blends with the style of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film and the tone of King's writing to create a well-rounded, expertly balanced yet equally effective journey that is both everything fans of the original film might have hoped for as much as it is wholly its own endeavor; a bridge between who we were meant to be, who we become and the resilience necessary to counteract the detrimental and absolve one's self of their past in order to continue to shine.

Tina M 5d ago Omg! I rated this 5⭐️/5⭐️ for a few reasons! First, it's a sequel and I'm always disappointed in sequels. A little or a lot, but I can count on some small voice that says, "juuust not as good as the first...'THAT DID NOT happen, at all. I'm a paranormal believer, and from what I see on ‘Dead Files' on Travel channel w/ physical medium @AmyAllen on Twitter and retired NYPD Det. as her partner, ‘doctor sleep' stayed in the realm of truth. A cocaine & steroids truth, but it's a movie! And a great one! The acting was superb! The story was epic, (I mean Stephen King knows how to write a great story)! I was on the EDGE OF SEAT...entirely! There was a great father, daughter feel to Abra and Dan (Danny) and her shine was awesome! I would say this is 100% a Must See unless you're nuts and didn't like ‘TheShining'! I almost said it's better than, but cmon...not possible, am I right??! I am! It did add more understanding of ‘TheShining', too! That was an unexpected, and a totally welcomed surprise! If you're NOT an open minded fan of the paranormal, yet we're a fan of ‘The Shining' it's easy to tell you're with the same character, and as the movie draws nearer the end, it's a walk thru the true and terrifying past of the Overlook Hotel!!! Small twist-ish type ending, but it truly ended the only way I saw fit!!!

If you like Mike Flanagan's work (Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, etc.) and liked Kubrick"s film adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining (1980) then you may like this film. But if you never saw THE SHINING before, you may be scratching your head watching this film. I strongly recommend watching Kubrick's classic film first! I really liked Kubrick's film (sorry, Mr. King) because it's one those films that will stick with you long after you have watched it. It was the source of many nightmares for me since 1980, but I digress... Full disclosure, Doctor Sleep is one of the few books written by King that I haven't read yet. So I can't say which is better. I usually prefer the book to the film, but the film is pretty good IMO. Definitely a film for fans of The Shining (book and film)! Creepy at times but rather entertaining. Two disc set includes both the theatrical and director's cuts of the film. Plus a few BTS features.

This review is for the 4K/Blu-ray version of the doctor sleep film. In all fairness my opinion is based upon the directors cut. My only complaint about this release is that the 4K is the “theatrical release” (which by the way I have not watched this version yet) and the Blu-ray is the directors cut. Had I been more observant I simply would’ve bought the Blu-ray for the directors cut. The film follows the logical progression of young Danny Torrance from the original Shining novel and film. I viewed the “directors cut” and I must say I was thoroughly impressed with the directing, the acting and the overall presentation of the story. I cannot recommend this film more strongly to fans of Stephen King. I cannot recommend this film more strongly to fans of Stephen King. Being one myself I was thoroughly impressed with the entire presentation. The only thing that does bother me is I’m certain if they release a directors cut on 4K I’ll have to buy this again. Highly recommended film.
