Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin with Tom Baker [DVD] is the Doctor Who favorite we grew up seeing. It's great to be able to see these shows from way back, great viewing!

The previous story "Hand of Fear" saw the exit of Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) as the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) is summoned to his home planet Gallifrey. The Deadly Assassin is the first time we see The Doctor flying solo with no companion(s). The very next story "The Face of Evil" introduced new companion Leela. A classic story that at the time was criticized for being to violent. This story also brings back the Doctor's arch nemesis The Master(who looks a little worn down). Not a good story to start as a new viewer as you may find yourself a bit lost due to continuity but a classic nevertheless.

If you've seen the Manchurian Candidate, you've seen this and know the story. The Doctor is framed for the murder of the president of Gallifrey. The way that the Doctor proves that he didn't do it is really creative. Not to mention that we get to see a great makeup/mask job for the main bad guy...which I won't spoil for those that haven't seen it.

The Doctor saves the humans from robots who have their prime directive over-ridden. Sound familiar.

Enjoy the Tom Baker years and this is the first time we see Leela. Great story, but found out that this is a DVD+R copy and not an original. I feel that I have been ripped off by the later releases of the Doctor Who stories that are copies, they should have mentioned this in the descriptions or reduced the prices. So if you don't like copies, don't buy this. That is why I give it just one star.

For some reason, this episode has a special place in my Doctor Who memories. Maybe it's the geological-based alien, the crystaline costume, the moving severed hand like an old 50's horror movie. So much to choose from. Be sure to take time to view the extras and listen to the commentary track on this one. A lot of fun.
For historical Doctor Who significance, this was the last classic series appearace for Sarah Jane that was not a special.

Following up The Deadly Assassin and the realization that this Doctor doesn't necessarily need a companion, we are introduced to Leela who is in many ways his exact opposite. This is a brilliantly written story following a classic science theme of brain versus brawn and how they complement one another.

Tom Baker, Leela, and Killer Robots what else could you want.Good period piece 70.s costumes. Acting is passable. If you're a Doctor Who Fan this is one of the best of the old series. Even if you're not a Doctor Fan. This holds up well outside the context of the series. Well worth a rainy night's viewing.

This story introduces new companion Leela - a savage on an alien world - and the Doctor discovers he's made a dreadful mistake out of arrogance. One of the cleverest scripts in the series.

This story is one of the best of Tom Baker's time as the Doctor. Buy it now if you love Classic Who ! The Deadly Assassin is very similar to The Manchurian Candidate (not the remake)
