An upgrade from the Filtrete Radio Thermostat

I used the Filtrete Radio Thermostat for a few years and was quite happy with it. After reading some reviews about the ecobee3, I decided to buy the HomeLink version and see if it was as good as the reviews suggested. Installation took 25 minutes, including tidying up the existing wiring (which were way too long). Luckily I'd attached the "C" wire to my furnace when I installed the Filtrete. Wiring was not a problem at all. I'm thinking of having it control my whole house humidifier, although I may need to use the included power extender kit to add the extra wire needed. I think that it's a great product - with abundant tweaks and options (such as running the furnace fan for a set amount of time every hour). The iOS app. (as of July 30, 2015) has a small bug - forgetting login credentials, but it's pretty decent. I think that I'm going to spring for 2 more remote sensors, but at almost $80 for the pair - they are pretty expensive.

Very Pleased After a Few Weeks

I've only had it installed for a few weeks now so I can't speak to the longer term satisfaction or savings. I did just get my electric bill for the past month and it was down about 12-15% over last year even though this year has been hotter (AZ so we are talking $40+ difference). I have two of these installed as I have a split system. Installation: Pretty Easy. I didn't have a c-wire hooked up on my existing 20 year old honeywell "programmable" thermostat so I had to pull the side panel off of the air handler. I had one but it just wasn't hooked up on the thermostat end so I was fortunate. Killed all the power to the AC and went to work. Had to cut and strip the wires as they slide in instead of wrap around like the old ones. Install was a snap after that. I will admit to watching youtube videos. One thing that did trip me up was that I was trying to put the small backing that the thermostat is attached to on the bigger backing. I guess a better read of the instructions was in order but I figured it out (dumb move on my part but you will probably laugh if you are installing yours after reading this realizing what I did). Set up: Turned the power on and SUCCESS I have lights. Basic set up was pretty easy, I used my iPhone to set up where I could though the screen is good as well. I don't know what I did but the home kit part is still wacked out, not working, but it is on my network and I'm not all automated out so don't care to mess with it right now. It takes a bit to program a day, not much, but probably took my 6-8 minutes for the first one with a bit of a learning curve. You can copy days to other days which sped things up. Use: I like it a lot. I have it programmed where my old unit wasn't as it was such a pain to figure out the push-push-push of the buttons to get anything in. The ecobees look good on the wall and kind of work as a nightlight as they light up when I walk by (you can adjust the brightness I believe). I use the app from time to time if my schedule changes and I'm headed home to make sure it is cooled off. I have one thermostat that was totally misplaced when the house was built as it picks up the temp from the other side of the house so it was always a battle to even them out. The remote sensor has been a great help with that and also my son's room that always seemed to be a bit warmer. The remote sensor is what swung me to ecobee and it has been worth it. Overall a great experience so far. Easy to install, easy to set up, and so far working as I expected. Waiting for my first report to see what I can do to save more but very pleased even without that.

The Ecobee 3 Is a terrific thermostat. Installation was a breeze, other than during setup when the unit asked whether the a/b reversing valve energizes during heating or cooling mode. The software is simple and user friendly. I'm not sure how much energy I will save with the upgrade, but I expect it to be substantial considering my old thermostat wasn't even programmable. Additionally, my thermostat receives direct sunlight in the summer, so the additional sensor allows me to regulate my temperature away from the thermostat. I have not hooked it up to Homekit, but I don't expect any issues.

The Ecobee was relatively easy to install and set up. Having the additional sensors in other rooms minimizes the temperature extremes our previous thermostat created. Very easy to switch to away mode from your iPhone to save on energy when you are not home.

This replaced a programmable thermostat I installed many years ago. It was slightly more difficult as my old one used a battery, this uses low voltage. It took longer to reach their help desk than it took for the person to tell me how to hook it up. Less than a minute. Probably took half an hour to install. Like being able to control things from my phone or just to check in for the status. Wish I had this months ago. The house was always too hot when we came home from our cabin. It would take hours to make things comfortable again. Now I change it before I come home and come home to a comfortable house. Liked it so much I went back and bought another two pack of sensors.

I installed the Ecobee3 myself, which was a little nerve -wracking, as my heating system required that I open up my furnace and handle some wiring, but it was actually quite easy. The thermostat works well. I can easily set it to automatically heat or cool my home based on a preferred temperature range. I can also set as many home, away, or sleep cycles as I want, any way I want. One amazing setting is the Ecobee3's ability to sense if you're home or away and adjust accordingly. It works very well.

    Better than Nest

I've started to get into the whole connected home thing and decided to which out my old digital thermostat. I of course looked at Nest as it was the only thing I have ever really heard of in the Smart Thermostat area. As I did my research to decide what was out there and what were the Pros and Cons with the Nest. I kept seeing this Ecobee popping up with really good user reviews. As I researched it more, I found it actually takes care of one of the most annoying things in a mid sized house, one or more rooms being to hot or cold even though the thermostat thinks the temp is correct. With the Ecobee having those remote sensors, every room the sensors are in is taken care of when your temp is set. The Nest like many other thermostats can only read the temp in the room/hallway it is in.

I've had both Insteon and Nest thermostats and the Ecobee beats them both. Having remote sensors in every room makes the Ecobee so much start than the competition. It will average out the temp throughout your home and use that as the temp used to decide if heating or cooling is required. The remote sensors also detect motion so you can configure the Ecobee to only take the average of rooms you are occupying. This can significantly cut down on energy use. You can control it while away from home. It doesn't get trigger by pets. The customization of temperatures is simple. There's even a web interface if you forget your phone.

Remote Sensors give this the edge!

I looked very seriously at the Nest, but what sold me on the ecobee3 for my home were the remote sensors. I have radiant heat broken into three zones, but the AC unit only runs off of one thermostat. That one thermostat was replaced by the ecobee3. Since it runs the AC, it had to be placed close to the boarder of two heating zones, which caused both zones to influence the thermostat. Not good, so the remote sensors allow the temp to be taken further in that zone. The other sensors work well when in the cooling season and placed in south facing rooms that tend to run warmer. I've ended up with a better cooling and heating system because of the remote sensor feature. Excellent product with a great user interface. Couldn't recommend it more!

The instructional videos made it easy to assemble out of the box. I was eyeing this product for a good month before deciding on the ecobee3 versus the third generation Nest. The clinchers for me were the multiple room sensors and Siri enabled voice control.

In all honesty, I went into Best Buy to purchase a Nest. I did a little researching and listened to a couple of guys that work with me, and made the determination that my dive into home automation would include a couple of Nest thermostats. Well, I ran across the Ecobee 3 just by browsing - glad I did. Not saying the Nest isn't good, but where Ecobee 3 excels is in the added sensor(s) for greater floor coverage. With it, you receive one remote sensor which you wirelessly connect to the thermostat and place in the location of your choice. That gives you the thermostat location and a remote location working together to gauge the climate. The sensors actually contain 3 sensors - temperature, humidity, motion. These 3 are also present in the base unit. You can add additional sensors to include other locations or rooms in your climate calculation. I added 2 additional sensors for my upstairs unit because the climate is just tricky up there, while my downstairs is more open. Ecobee 3 takes an average of all the sensors to determine the true climate of the floor/house. It also has modes like follow me - the motion sensors are used to know which rooms are occupied, hence which to include in testing for climate. Awesome! This also is used when the unit is set to auto for mode selection. When the house is still, the mode will switch to sleep - lower/higher temps depending on the season. When there is activity detected, the mode switches to home. Ecobee also has a great web interface allowing you to manage your home climate from the cloud. They have a very well documented API allowing integration with other home automation systems - Wink, Vera, Smart Things, etc. Because of the sensor capability alone, this is well worth it. Also, makes me wonder why the Nest isn't cheaper.

This is one of the best purchases I have made in a while, and it solved three key things I wanted to work better. First, I wanted to be able to adjust the temperature remotely for those times when I forgot before leaving the house. Second, I wanted to have an option that automatically went between heat and cool. And third, I wanted something to help keep the temperature comfortable to occupied rooms as my floors and rooms unfortunately vary by up to 5 degrees normally. This met all three! Installation required a little bit of knowledge making sure you kept the connections straight, but their directions and web site have excellent details- although I would recommend doing the walkthrough on the mobile app as it asks which wires you have and tailors the directions. I have a multi-stage heat pump. It auto-detected what wires were connected, asked a few questions (one of which I had to guess as far as whether energized on a line was heat versus cool, but the default turned out to be correct) and then set itself up. The ecobee3 works well. It senses what rooms are occupied (I bought 2 extra sensors to cover the primary areas) and tailors the conditions to target the average temperature for occupied areas. It automatically switches from heat to cool, and their web site maintains a history showing runtimes next to the outside temperature. It also has integration with Amazon Echo/Dot/Alexa. That integration is a little odd when it is in auto heat/cool mode as it relays back the average temperature rather than the specific heat or cool set points, but otherwise it basically works and I expect the integration will improve.

I waited patiently, for a long time, for the right Smart Thermostat. The earliest ones were not able to control Heat Pumps. More recently, Heat Pump control features have been added to numerous Manufacture’s Thermostat lineups. I chose the ecobee3 because; I received a $100 rebate from my local power company, it was a Black Friday Sale and I received two extra Remote Sensors at no additional cost, it is Canadian made, it had Apple HomeKit connectivity, it had Remote Sensors, and the list goes on. Installation, setup, and operation was and is simple and straightforward. I recommend this product.

    Goodbye Nest, Hello ecobee3!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Unlike the Nest, it proudly displays the current temperature! What a concept! Imagine looking over at your thermostat and the big number is the temp it is set to maintain. Nope. I know that number. What I want to is the current temp, thank you ecobee. It also has a multitude of adjustments that you just might need or just enjoy tweaking to perfection. My cooling tends to short cycle. No problem here, unlike Nest. There are 2 ways to fix my problem with ecobee 3. And, that's just one example. Or, just set up a schedule from the comfort of your computer or smartphone & leave the rest alone. No manual setting every change all day every day for a week or 10 days for the thermostat to "learn" your likings. Add the little remote sensors and you really have a great setup that will just hum along and keep you comfortable and efficient. Plus, I like the attitude of the company! After my purchase of which I thought was the thermostat with the best compliment of features & usability, I found that the company goes to great lengths to stay in touch with and get ongoing feedback from customers. For interesting customers (I am one) I find the creative, innovative interactions available with the company fun, challenging and thought-provoking. It's a like a bonus to feel like I am a valued member of the team that can result in valuable improvements of the product I already bought--as a cell phone can have features added to it without buying a new phone. Their approach gets me thinking. And, there is the product. It looks great, acts great (does what it says it will do). You can set it and forget it or you can get it to do all sorts of things to keep you comfortable and save money, automated and manual at your command--if that's your thing. You can even take advantage of the unique ability to take into consideration temperature readings in multiple rooms of the house and concentrate on keeping the room you are in the temperature you want. [Nest must be sorry they didn't think of that.] I initially bought the package with just 1 remote--didn't know there was the option to buy a package deal with 3 remotes, so ended up buying 2 more remotes. Very pleased the way it keeps my heating an cooling under control as I want it and I can easily make a quick change from my smart phone--like heat the house up (or cool it down) when I'm on the way home so it's comfy when I get there or bump it up or down a notch without getting up from the sofa. Cool stuff for those inclined, but very automated for those inclined for set it and forget it or a couple with a gadget oriented husband and couldn't care less wife (or vice versa, of course!). And, with the support of this interesting and interested company, who knows what interesting and helpful update they may send to your bee, just like your phone. Or, don't worry about it and just let it hum along, saving your $$ on your utility bill.

After installing a new Trane HVAC dual system, I compared the top smart thermostats to replace the standard programmable Trane unit. I wanted a thermostat I could not only program a schedule and fully control my system properly, but I could access remotely and include a few smart features such as auto away and smart home integration (preferably homekit). This is the only one I found that checks all the boxes. I knew the ecobee included a remote sensor and that I could add more. Neat, but I did not expect to really utilize that feature with a smaller home. With a 9 month old, I planned to place the sensor in his room and expected the ecobee to average with the control unit reading. However, I found this more useful than I first imagined. For programming/scheduling, you create different setting groups such as Day, Away, Sleep, etc. and then schedule them for the days/times you want. You are able to set which sensors you want you used in each of these groups. So for Sleep, I use only the sensor in the baby's room. For Daytime, I use the average of both. The sensor also includes occupancy detection so you can have it "follow" you around the house if your house is large enough. It can also switch to Away when it detects no one at the thermostat or a sensor for some time. In summary, the ecobee3 is everything I hoped for and a little more.

The thermostat was packaged nicely with easy to follow instructions. Installation was very simple and the setup is very user friendly. The thermostat can work through wi-fi from anywhere and extremely handy when your in bed and don't want to go downstairs to change the settings. I also purchased remote sensors since I have two floors with only one zone. The heat or air stays on longer and evens the temperature more between the floors. Excellent product. Thanks Eco-bee
